FRANOPP: Framework for analysis and optimization problems user's guide

Framework for analysis and optimization problems (FRANOPP) is a software aid for the study and solution of design (optimization) problems which provides the driving program and plotting capability for a user generated programming system. In addition to FRANOPP, the programming system also contains the optimization code CONMIN, and two user supplied codes, one for analysis and one for output. With FRANOPP the user is provided with five options for studying a design problem. Three of the options utilize the plot capability and present an indepth study of the design problem. The study can be focused on a history of the optimization process or on the interaction of variables within the design problem.

Combining analysis with optimization at Langley Research Center. An evolutionary process

The evolutionary process of combining analysis and optimization codes was traced with a view toward providing insight into the long term goal of developing the methodology for an integrated, multidisciplinary software system for the concurrent analysis and optimization of aerospace structures. It was traced along the lines of strength sizing, concurrent strength and flutter sizing, and general optimization to define a near-term goal for combining analysis and optimization codes. Development of a modular software system combining general-purpose, state-of-the-art, production-level analysis computer programs for structures, aerodynamics, and aeroelasticity with a state-of-the-art optimization program is required. Incorporation of a modular and flexible structural optimization software system into a state-of-the-art finite element analysis computer program will facilitate this effort. This effort results in the software system used that is controlled with a special-purpose language, communicates with a data management system, and is easily modified for adding new programs and capabilities. A 337 degree-of-freedom finite element model is used in verifying the accuracy of this system.

Aviary: An Open-Source Multidisciplinary Design, Analysis, and Optimization Tool for Modeling Aircraft With Analytic Gradients

Demands on aircraft design methods in recent years have begun to require increasingly higher amounts of coupling between disciplines and have also begun to require optimization in order to satisfy competing objectives involving large numbers of parameters that define unconventional configurations. These expanding requirements have amplified a need for new and improved aircraft design, analysis, and optimization codes that are capable of performing coupled design exploiting analytic gradients where possible. Aviary is a multidisciplinary design optimization and analysis framework which allows for tightly coupled simultaneous aircraft and subsystem design using analytic gradients. Aviary has employed the methods of two legacy aircraft analysis tools to provide native analytically differentiated calculations for five different disciplines, and it also has the ability to couple in external discipline analysis tools, whether or not those tools can provide analytic gradients. Preliminary examples and modeling efforts have shown Aviary’s ability to effectively model novel concepts and explore large and non-intuitive design spaces. Finally, a multi-level user interface in Aviary creates an easy entry point for users with any level of multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization experience.

Aviary: An Open-Source Multidisciplinary Design, Analysis, and Optimization Tool for Modeling Aircraft with Analytic Gradients

In recent years demands on aircraft design methods have begun to require higher degrees of coupling between disciplines and optimization in order to satisfy competing objectives involving large numbers of design parameters that define unconventional configurations. These expanding requirements have amplified a need for new and improved aircraft design, analysis, and optimization codes that are capable of performing coupled design and exploiting analytic gradients to perform gradient-based optimization where possible. To address this need, a new multidisciplinary design optimization and analysis tool called Aviary is presented. This tool, built on OpenMDAO, allows for tightly coupled, simultaneous aircraft and subsystem design using analytic gradients. Aviary includes methods from two NASA developed legacy aircraft analysis tools and provides native analytically differentiated calculations for five different disciplines (weights and sizing, aerodynamics, geometry, propulsion, and mission analysis), while also allowing external discipline analysis tools to be coupled, regardless of whether those tools can provide analytic gradients. Verification and preliminary examples and modeling efforts show Aviary’s ability to effectively model novel concepts and explore large and non-intuitive design spaces. Additionally, a multi-level user interface in Aviary creates an easy entry point for users with any level of multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization experience.

Multidisciplinary Design, Analysis, and Optimization Tool Development Using a Genetic Algorithm

Multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization using a genetic algorithm is being developed at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Dryden Flight Research Center (Edwards, California) to automate analysis and design process by leveraging existing tools to enable true multidisciplinary optimization in the preliminary design stage of subsonic, transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic aircraft. This is a promising technology, but faces many challenges in large-scale, real-world application. This report describes current approaches, recent results, and challenges for multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization as demonstrated by experience with the Ikhana fire pod design.!

Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimal Design: As Easy as it Sounds?

The viewgraph presentation examines optimal design for precision, large aperture structures. Discussion focuses on aspects of design optimization, code architecture and current capabilities, and planned activities and collaborative area suggestions. The discussion of design optimization examines design sensitivity analysis; practical considerations; and new analytical environments including finite element-based capability for high-fidelity multidisciplinary analysis, design sensitivity, and optimization. The discussion of code architecture and current capabilities includes basic thermal and structural elements, nonlinear heat transfer solutions and process, and optical modes generation.

Second-Order-Potential Analysis and Optimization

Optimum camber designed for supersonic and hypersonic vehicles. Second Order Potential Analysis and Optimization (SOPA) package set of computer programs used to predict aerodynamic characteristics and design optimum camber for both supersonic and hypersonic vehicles. Analysis program incorporates second-order-potential, small-disturbance theory for analysis of wing/body configurations. Optimization program uses analysis results to generate optimum camber, twist, or flap deflections by minimizing zero suction drag. SOPA written in FORTRAN V for batch execution.

Computer implementation of analysis and optimization procedures for control-structure interaction problems

Implementation aspects of control-structure interaction analysis and optimization by the staggered use of single-discipline analysis modules are discussed. The single-discipline modules include structural analysis, controller synthesis and optimization. The software modularity is maintained by employing a partitioned control-structure interaction analysis procedure, thus avoiding the need for embedding the single-discipline modules into a monolithic program. A software testbed has been constructed as a stand-alone analysis and optimization program and tested for its versatility and software modularity by applying it to the dynamic analysis and preliminary design of a prototype Earth Pointing Satellite. Experience with the in-core testbed program so far demonstrates that the testbed is efficient, preserves software modularity, and enables the analyst to choose a different set of algorithms, control strategies and design parameters via user software interfaces. Thus, the present software architecture is recommended for adoption by control-structure interaction analysts as a preliminary analysis and design tool.

A boundary element approach to optimization of active noise control sources on three-dimensional structures

This paper presents the theoretical development of an approach to active noise control (ANC) applicable to three-dimensional radiators. The active noise control technique, termed ANC Optimization Analysis, is based on minimizing the total radiated power by adding secondary acoustic sources on the primary noise source. ANC Optimization Analysis determines the optimum magnitude and phase at which to drive the secondary control sources in order to achieve the best possible reduction in the total radiated power from the noise source/control source combination. For example, ANC Optimization Analysis predicts a 20 dB reduction in the total power radiated from a sphere of radius at a dimensionless wavenumber ka of 0.125, for a single control source representing 2.5 percent of the total area of the sphere. ANC Optimization Analysis is based on a boundary element formulation of the Helmholtz Integral Equation, and thus, the optimization analysis applies to a single frequency, while multiple frequencies can be treated through repeated analyses.

Optimization and analysis of gas turbine engine blades

A gas turbine engine blade design is optimized using STAEBL. To validate the STAEBL analysis, the optimized blade design is analyzed using MARC, MHOST and BEST3D. The results show good agreement between STAEBL, MARC, and MHOST. The conclusion is that STAEBL can be used to optimize an engine blade design.

STOP Analysis and Optimization of a Very-Low-Distortion Space Instrument: HST WFC3 Case Study

New generation optical instruments with very demanding stability requirements are being proposed and developed for space applications. STOP (Structural-Thermal-Optical Performance) analysis and optimization is crucial in meeting the very tight distortion budgets of these instruments. This presentation outlines STOP analysis and optimization approach in the context of WFC3 (Wide-Field Camera 3), which is a radial instrument designed to replace the Wide-Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). WFC3 houses two separate channels, UVIS and IR, and will have greater throughput and sensitivity than WFPC2. WFC3 line-of-sight alignment budget for the UVIS and IR channels are as small as 10 and 20 milli-arcsec, respectively. Its optical bench is the most critical subsystem effecting the optical stability of WFC3 hence our effort concentrates on the design and analysis of the bench and its interfaces. Structural analysis has accompanied the mechanical design of the bench since the initial concept study. A high fidelity structural Finite Element Model (FEM) of the bench has been developed and used for minimizing its thermally induced distortions as well as sizing it to meet the stiffness and strength requirements of a Shuttle launch. The bench is a composite honeycomb panel box structure with a very low planar Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) of approximately 0.1 ppm/C. Optic components are mounted to super-INVAR inserts bonded into the panels. The bench is kinematically supported on three HST latches via interface struts, which are tailored to exhibit negative CTE to cancel out the thermal motions of the latches. The interface struts also incorporate flexure elements to minimize the mechanical distortions coming into the bench from its enclosure. Bench FEM is coupled with the enclosure FEM to quantify these effects. Short term or on-orbit STOP analysis includes distortion due to the temperature variations of the bench, the struts, and the enclosure. Long term or ground-to-orbit STOP analysis includes distortional effects of gravity release, desorption, and assembly in addition to the ground-to-orbit temperature variations. A rigorous testing program has been implemented for verifying the material properties and the analysis predictions. STOP analysis results demonstrate that both the short-term and the long-term alignment budgets will be met. Presentation will cover design and analysis details that are critical to a successful implementation of the STOP analysis and optimization process.

Combining analysis with optimization at Langley Research Center - An evolutionary process

Analytical and computational advances, at Langely Research Center (La RC), contributing to the evolution of computer programs combining analysis and optimization are presented, namely, strength sizing, concurrent strength and flutter sizing, and general optimization. Current work on a software system which executes the analysis and optimization in a sequential rather than concurrent mode is then described, as a step toward the long-term goal at La RC of developing the methodology for such systems. The software system is designated Enginering Analysis Language (EAL)/Programming Structural Synthesis System (PR)SSS), and work is being done on the incorporation of PROSSS into EAL. EAL language can perform most FORTRAN operations, including testing, branching, and looping, and its data base system can easily be accessed by any processor using FORTRAN callable utility subroutines. Some numerical results showing the accuracy of EAL/PROSSS are given.
