Overview of the Geoanalytical Economic Evaluation of Saline Storage (GEESS) System

This report provides an overview on the Geoanalytical Economic Evaluation of Saline Storage (GEESS) system which characterized 57 geologic saline formations targeted for geologic carbon storage across the lower-48 U.S. states using publicly available resources. The GEESS system consists of high spatial resolution datasets (up to 5 km grid spacing) that provide key geologic parameters (e.g., depth, thickness, permeability), and estimates of CO 2 plume size and CO 2 first-year break-even price that were determined by exercising GEESS data through the FECM/NETL CO 2 Saline Storage Cost Model (CO2_S_COM). The GEESS geodatabase is available on NETL’s EDX at GEESS Geodatabase.

Overview on Current Activities of Conduction-Cooled SRF Accelerators and their Applications

When Nb3Sn was reintroduced to the SRF community as an alternative to pure niobium, one key motivation has been to reduce the cryogenic requirements of new and existing accelerators by shifting from 2 K to 4 K operation. Meanwhile, a variety of implementations beyond research machines are being explored. The combination of Nb3Sn with conventional cryocoolers, enabling cryogen-free operation, has paved the way for the development of compact, standalone systems suitable for applications far beyond research, such as enhancing the durability of synthetics via crosslinking or sterilizing food and medical equipment, as well as environmental cleanup when it comes to decontaminating liquid and solid waste material. So, while fundamental R&D continues to refine Nb3Sn resonators, exploring improvements such as replacing the niobium substrate with copper, parallel research efforts are investigating how the increased beam power provided by SRF could expand the commercial use of electron beams. This presentation aims to deliver a comprehensive overview of ongoing research efforts to harness the benefits of SRF through Nb3Sn and conduction cooling.

An Overview of the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database–Thermophysical, Version 4.0 (MSTDB-TP V.4.0)

A central repository of thermophysical and thermochemical properties of molten salt compositions of relevance to molten salt reactors (MSRs) is vital in supporting the broad community of MSR developers, who are at various stages of developing and deploying their reactor designs. In general, these MSR designs differ significantly from developer to developer (e.g., with respect to the hardness of the neutron spectra, level of fissile loading, target multicomponent temperatures and power levels, and moderating capabilities). Therefore, the fuel and coolant salts being considered vary greatly: they may be chlorides or fluorides, they utilize different actinides at different ratios, and the cations in the melt are selected based on perceived advantages and disadvantages. Considering the general need for thermal properties, and the vastness of the array of potential candidate salt mixtures, the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database (MSTDB) was initiated in 2018 with the goal of providing thermophysical and thermochemical characterization of key molten salt compounds and mixtures across their temperature and compositional domains. The MSTDB is thus divided into the thermophysical arm (MSTDB-TP) and the thermochemical arm (MSTDB-TC). The MSTDB is an effort funded by the Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program, and the MSR Campaign. This report provides an overview of the MSTDB-TP v4.0 in terms of the data contained within, the state of the tools used to access the data, the availability of predictive models that leverage the raw data in the database, the preliminary status of developmental efforts that are currently underway, and an account of future goals for MSTDB-TP. The primary goal for the update from MSTDB-TP v.3.1 to v4.0 was the incorporation of surface tension data into the database; this property is important for thermal hydraulics modeling and species transport in other tools that have been developed under the NEAMS program. A breakdown of the surface tension data that have been added into MSTDB-TP v4.0 is provided herein, and the manner in which the quality of the data has been assessed is also documented. For MSTDB-TP v4.0, newly published thermophysical property data—primarily from collaborative experimental efforts under the MSR Campaign—have been incorporated into the database, and the resulting expansion is documented here. Because of the size to which MSTDB-TP has grown, the raw data format has now been recast into JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format for easier connection with the MSTDB-TP application programming interface (API). Saline; the pre-existing comma-separated value (CSV) format has been deprecated but is still maintained, accessible, and up to date. As a final effort in packaging the MSTDB-TP v4.0 update, the graphical user interface (GUI) for MSTDB has been updated to allow full accessibility to the density and viscosity predictive models, which are based on Redlich-Kister expansions of MSTDB-TP raw data. Some other major aspects of this report, in terms of preliminary and future work, include: (1) documentation of the formalism and preliminary testing of a kinetic theory model that may act as a predictive model for thermal conductivity; (2) documentation of the candidate predictive models that may be considered in the future for surface tension, making use of the surface tension data now in MSTDB-TP v4.0; (3) a preliminary account of a data collection process that will enable the filling of additional gaps within MSTDB-TP, namely with data which have been collected computationally (e.g., through ab initio molecular dynamics).

IMPACT-01 Assembly Overview [Slides]

The Irradiated Material Properties Accelerated Characterization Test (IMPACT) series of experiments will irradiate three metallic fuel alloy specimens with embedded thermal conductivity probes in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). Metallic fuel alloys have long been under investigation for use in advanced reactors on account of their high thermal conductivity. Metallic fuel undergoes dramatic microstructural changes early in life due to fission gas swelling until ~2-3 at% burnup when pores interconnect, thus allowing fission gas to escape into the fuel pin plenum and swelling effectively ceases. The evolution of metallic fuel thermal conductivity during this early phase has never been successfully measured in situ. This experiment will be designed to use advances in measurement sciences to characterize how thermal transport properties evolve while in reactor. The IMPACT experiment consists of three metallic fuel rodlets with thermal conductivity probes axially centered within the fuel specimen. This presentation is an overview of the IMPACT-01 assembly process with a focus MFC fuel fabrication and experiment assembly steps.

An Overview of Electric Vehicle Load Modeling Strategies for Grid Integration Studies

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has emerged as a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, which has motivated the implementation of public policies to promote their use in several countries. However, the high adoption of EVs poses challenges for the electricity sector, as it would imply an increase in energy demand and possible impacts on the power quality (PQ) of the power grid. Therefore, it is important to conduct EV integration studies in the power grid to determine the amount that can be incorporated without causing problems and identify the areas of the power sector that will require reinforcements. Accurate EV load patterns are required for this type of study that, through mathematical modeling, reflect both the dynamic behavior and the factors that influence the decision to recharge EVs. This article aims to present an overview of EVs, examine the different factors considered in the literature for modeling EV load patterns, and review modeling methods. EV load modeling methods are classified into deterministic, statistical, and machine learning. The article shows that each modeling method has its advantages, disadvantages, and data requirements, ranging from simple load modeling to more accurate models requiring large datasets.
