Emergent pair density wave order across a Lifshitz transition

We numerically investigate the telltale signs of pair-density-wave order (PDW) in the Kondo-Heisenberg chain by focusing on the momentum resolved spectrum in different parameter regimes. Density matrix renormalization group calculations reveal that this phase is characterized by a dispersion with two minima and four Fermi points, indicating the emergence of an effective next-nearest-neighbor hopping that arises as a second-order effect to avoid magnetic frustration. The pairs appear in the spectrum as in-gap bound states with weight concentrated in the hole pockets. The low-energy physics can be understood by means of a generalized t−J model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping. Our results offer a guide for searching for experimental signatures, and for other models that can realize PDW physics.

Enhanced Pair-Density-Wave Vertices in a Bilayer Hubbard Model at Half Filling

Motivated by the pair-density-wave (PDW) state found in the one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg chain, we report on a determinant quantum Monte Carlo study of pair fields for a two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard layer coupled to an itinerant, noninteracting layer with one electron per site. In a specific range of interlayer hopping, the pairing vertex associated with PDW order becomes more attractive than that for uniform d-wave pairing, although both remain subdominant to the leading antiferromagnetic correlations at half filling. In conclusion, our result sheds light on where one potentially may find a PDW state in such a model.

Precursor of pair-density wave in doping Kitaev spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice

Abstract We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction J K , which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the t - J K model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has a dominant quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. In the pairing channel, the even-parity superconducting correlation is dominant with d -wave-like symmetry, which oscillates in sign as a function of separation with a period equal to that of the spin-density wave and two times the charge-density wave. Although these correlations fall rapidly (possibly exponentially) at long distances, this is never-the-less the example where a pair-density wave is the leading instability in the pairing channel on the honeycomb lattice.

Experimental evidence that zinc impurities pin pair-density-wave order in La 2-x Ba x CuO 4

Both Zn doping and c-axis magnetic fields have been observed to increase the spin stripe order in La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 with x close to 1/8. For x = 0.095, the applied magnetic field also causes superconducting layers to decouple, presumably by favoring pair-density-wave order that consequently frustrates interlayer Josephson coupling. Here we show that introducing 1% Zn also leads to an initial onset of two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity, followed by 3D superconductivity at lower temperatures, even in zero field. Overall, we infer that the Zn pins pair-density-wave order locally, establishing the generality of such behavior.

Singlet, triplet, and pair density wave superconductivity in the doped triangular-lattice moiré system

Recent experimental progress has established the twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) as a highly tunable platform for studying many-body physics. Particularly, the homobilayer TMDs under displacement field are believed to be described by a generalized triangular-lattice Hubbard model with a spin-dependent hopping phase θ. To explore the effects of θ on the system, we perform density matrix renormalization group calculations for the relevant triangular lattice t-J model. By changing θ at small hole doping, we obtain a region of quasi-long-range superconducting order coexisting with charge and spin density wave within 0 < θ < π/3. The superconductivity is composed of a dominant spin singlet d-wave and a subdominant triplet p-wave pairing. Intriguingly, the S z = ±1 triplet pairing components feature pair-density waves. In addition, we find a region of triplet superconductivity coexisting with charge-density wave and ferromagnetism within π/3 < θ < 2π/3, which is related to the former phase at smaller θ by a combined operation of spin-flip and gauge transformation. Furthermore, our findings provide insights and directions for experimental search for exotic superconductivity in twisted TMD systems.

Emergence of the Chern Supermetal and Pair-Density Wave through Higher-Order Van Hove Singularities in the Haldane-Hubbard Model

While advances in electronic band theory have brought to light new topological systems, understanding the interplay of band topology and electronic interactions remains a frontier question. In this work, we predict new interacting electronic orders emerging near higher-order Van Hove singularities present in the Chern bands of the Haldane model. We classify the nature of such singularities and employ unbiased renormalization group methods that unveil a complex landscape of electronic orders, which include ferromagnetism, density waves, and superconductivity. Importantly, we show that repulsive interactions can stabilize the long-sought pair-density-wave state and an exotic Chern supermetal, which is a new class of non-Fermi liquid with anomalous quantum Hall response. Further, this framework opens a new path to explore unconventional electronic phases in two-dimensional chiral bands through the interplay of band topology and higher-order Van Hove singularities.

Competing pair density wave and uniform 𝑑-wave superconductivity in phase-separated 214 cuprates at the 1/8 anomaly

Compelling evidence exists for electronic phase separation in cuprate high-𝑇𝑐 superconductors, emerging near 1/8 hole doping. At these dopings and low temperatures, intertwined charge and spin stripes coexist with more uniformly doped regions in the two-dimensional (2D) copper-oxide planes. Each region is capable of developing superconducting pairing, either as a pair density wave (PDW) within the stripes or as a uniform 𝑑-wave condensate (𝑑-SC) in the more homogeneous regions. Using neutron scattering on single crystals of La1.875−𝑦⁢Nd𝑦⁢Sr0.125⁢CuO4, we demonstrate that the onset temperatures for spin stripe order (𝑇𝑁) and superconductivity (𝑇𝑐) merge as the average ordered moment vanishes in LSCO (𝑦=0), whereas Nd doping stabilizes static stripe order and suppresses 𝑇𝑐. Because the spin stripes possess the same in-plane periodicity (8⁢𝑎) as the PDW and establish the framework within which the PDW resides, the stabilization of spin stripe order enhances PDW correlations. Thus, the competition between 𝑑-wave pairing in the uniform regions and PDW pairing in the stripe-ordered regions can be controlled by the Nd concentration in La1.875−𝑦⁢Nd𝑦⁢Sr0.125⁢CuO4, allowing the superconducting 𝑇𝑐 to vary by nearly an order of magnitude at a fixed 1/8-hole doping.

Gapless spin liquid and pair density wave of the Hubbard model on three-leg triangular cylinders

We study the ground state properties of the Hubbard model on three-leg triangular cylinders using large-scale density-matrix renormalization group simulations. At half-filling, we identify an intermediate gapless spin liquid phase, which has one gapless spin mode and algebraic spin–spin correlations but exponential decay scalar chiral–chiral correlations, between a metallic phase at weak coupling and Mott insulating dimer phase at strong interaction. Upon light doping the gapless spin liquid, the system exhibits power-law charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations but short-range single-particle, spin–spin, and chiral–chiral correlations. Similar to CDW correlations, the superconducting correlations also decay in power-law but oscillate in sign as a function of distance, which is consistent with the striped pair-density wave. When further doping the gapless spin liquid phase or doping the dimer order phase, another phase takes over, which has similar CDW correlations but all other correlations decay exponentially.

Charge transfer excitations, pair density waves, and superconductivity in moiré materials

Transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers are a new class of tunable moiré systems attracting interest as quantum simulators of strongly interacting electrons in two dimensions. In particular, recent theory predicts that the correlated insulator observed in WSe 2 /WS 2 at half filling is a charge-transfer insulator similar to cuprates and, upon further hole doping, exhibits a transfer of charge from anionlike to cationlike orbitals at different locations in the moiré unit cell. In this work, we demonstrate that in this doped charge-transfer insulator, tightly bound charge-2$\textit{e}$ excitations can form to lower the total electrostatic repulsion. This composite excitation, which we dub a trimer, consists of a pair of holes bound to a charge-transfer exciton. When the bandwidth of doped holes is small, trimers crystallize into insulating pair density waves at a sequence of commensurate doping levels. Further, when the bandwidth becomes comparable to the pair binding energy, itinerant holes and charge-2$\textit{e}$ trimers interact resonantly, leading to unconventional superconductivity similar to superfluidity in an ultracold Fermi gas near Feshbach resonance. Our theory is broadly applicable to strongly interacting charge-transfer insulators, such as WSe 2 /WS 2 or TMD homobilayers under an applied electric field.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional t 1 - t 2 - J model: Ferromagnetism, triplet pairing, and charge and pair density waves

Here, we present a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of an extended t-J model with hopping to the first and second neighbors -- the one dimensional t 1 -t 2 -J model. The full phase diagram as a function of the density n and exchange strength J, for both positive and negative values of t 2 , is obtained. For t 2 = -0.5 we observe that, in the strongly interacting region, Nagaoka Ferromagnetism (FM) is accompanied by a triplet pair density wave (PDW) upon doping. As the spin exchange J increases, a charge density wave (CDW) phase emerges and then gives way to singlet superconductivity (SC). This phase behaves as a singlet PDW with vanishing spacial average of the order parameter and a spin gap. When t 2 = 0.5, the physics is basically reminiscent of the conventional t-J model, undergoing a transition from a metallic to a SC phase as a function of J.

Detection of a pair density wave state in UTe2

Abstract Spin-triplet topological superconductors should exhibit many unprecedented electronic properties, including fractionalized electronic states relevant to quantum information processing. Although UTe 2 may embody such bulk topological superconductivity 1–11 , its superconductive order parameter Δ( k ) remains unknown 12 . Many diverse forms for Δ( k ) are physically possible 12 in such heavy fermion materials 13 . Moreover, intertwined 14,15 density waves of spin (SDW), charge (CDW) and pair (PDW) may interpose, with the latter exhibiting spatially modulating 14,15 superconductive order parameter Δ( r ), electron-pair density 16–19 and pairing energy gap 17,20–23 . Hence, the newly discovered CDW state 24 in UTe 2 motivates the prospect that a PDW state may exist in this material 24,25 . To search for it, we visualize the pairing energy gap with μeV-scale energy resolution using superconductive scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) tips 26–31 . We detect three PDWs, each with peak-to-peak gap modulations of around 10 μeV and at incommensurate wavevectors P i =1,2,3 that are indistinguishable from the wavevectors Q i =1,2,3 of the prevenient 24 CDW. Concurrent visualization of the UTe 2 superconductive PDWs and the non-superconductive CDWs shows that every P i : Q i pair exhibits a relative spatial phase δϕ ≈ π. From these observations, and given UTe 2 as a spin-triplet superconductor 12 , this PDW state should be a spin-triplet PDW 24,25 . Although such states do exist 32 in superfluid 3 He, for superconductors, they are unprecedented.

Little-Parks like oscillations in lightly doped cuprate superconductors

Understanding the rich and competing electronic orders in cuprate superconductors may provide important insight into the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. Here, by measuring Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x in the extremely underdoped regime, we obtain evidence for a distinct type of ordering, which manifests itself as resistance oscillations at low magnetic fields (≤10 T) and at temperatures around the superconducting transition. By tuning the doping level p continuously, we reveal that these low-field oscillations occur only when p < 0.1. The oscillation amplitude increases with decreasing >p but the oscillation period stays almost constant. We show that these low-field oscillations can be well described by assuming a periodic superconducting structure with a mesh size of about 50 nm. Such a charge order, which is distinctly different from the well-established charge density wave and pair density wave, seems to be an unexpected piece of the puzzle on the correlated physics in cuprates.

Topological Doping and Superconductivity in Cuprates: An Experimental Perspective

Hole doping into a correlated antiferromagnet leads to topological stripe correlations, involving charge stripes that separate antiferromagnetic spin stripes of opposite phases. The topological spin stripe order causes the spin degrees of freedom within the charge stripes to feel a geometric frustration with their environment. In the case of cuprates, where the charge stripes have the character of a hole-doped two-leg spin ladder, with corresponding pairing correlations, anti-phase Josephson coupling across the spin stripes can lead to a pair-density-wave order in which the broken translation symmetry of the superconducting wave function is accommodated by pairs with finite momentum. This scenario is now experimentally verified by recently reported measurements on La2−xBaxCuO4 with x=1/8. While pair-density-wave order is not common as a cuprate ground state, it provides a basis for understanding the uniform d-wave order that is more typical in superconducting cuprates.

Unconventional Superconductivity Mediated by Exciton Density Wave Fluctuations

Synthetic platforms afford an unparalleled degree of controllability in realizing strongly correlated phases of matter. In this Letter, we study the possibility of electrically tunable exciton-mediated superconductivity arising in charge-imbalanced bilayer semiconductors. Focusing on the case of a bilayer semiconductor heterostructure, we identify the gating conditions required to achieve exciton density wave order within a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. We analyze the role of the coupling of excitonic fluctuations to the fermionic charge carriers to find that the Goldstone mode of the density wave order can mediate attractive interactions leading to superconductivity. Furthermore, when the system is close to the density wave ordering, the interactions mediated by low-energy exciton modes can support an interlayer pair-density wave superconductor of anisotropic character. We discuss experimental signatures associated with these phenomena.
