Emission of sound from turbulence convected by a parallel flow in the presence of solid boundaries

A theoretical description is given of the sound emitted from an arbitrary point in a parallel or nearly parallel turbulent shear flow confined to a region near solid boundaries. The analysis begins with Lighthill's formulation of aerodynamic noise and assumes that the turbulence is axisymmetric. Specific results are obtained for the sound emitted from an arbitrary point in a turbulent flow within a semi-infinite, open-ended duct.

Energy distribution functions of kilovolt ions parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field of a modified Penning discharge

The distribution function of ion energy parallel to the magnetic field of a modified Penning discharge has been measured with a retarding potential energy analyzer. These ions escaped through one of the throats of the magnetic mirror geometry. Simultaneous measurements of the ion energy distribution function perpendicular to the magnetic field have been made with a charge exchange neutral detector. The ion energy distribution functions are approximately Maxwellian, and the parallel and perpendicular kinetic temperatures are equal within experimental error. These results suggest that turbulent processes previously observed in this discharge Maxwellianize the velocity distribution along a radius in velocity space and cause an isotropic energy distribution. When the distributions depart from Maxwellian, they are enhanced above the Maxwellian tail.

Afterburner Performance of Circular V-Gutters and a Sector of Parallel V-Gutters for a Range of Inlet Temperatures to 1255 K (1800 F)

Combustion tests of two V-gutter types were conducted in a 19.25-in. diameter duct using vitiated air. Fuel spraybars were mounted in line with the V-gutters. Combustor length was set by flame-quench water sprays which were part of a calorimeter for measuring combustion efficiency. Although the levels of performance of the parallel and circular array afterburners were different, the trends with geometry variations were consistent. Therefore, parallel arrays can be used for evaluating V-gutter geometry effects on combustion performance. For both arrays, the highest inlet temperature produced combustion efficiencies near 100 percent. A 5-in. spraybar - to - V-gutter spacing gave higher efficiency and better lean blowout performance than a spacing twice as large. Gutter durability was good.

Interaction between parallel cracks in layered composites

The plane strain problem of a multi-layered composite with parallel cracks is considered. The main objective is to study the interaction between parallel and collinear cracks. The problem is formulated in terms of a set of simultaneous singular integral equations which are solved numerically. The effect of material properties on the interaction between cracks is also demonstrated.

An efficient parallel algorithm for the solution of a tridiagonal linear system of equations.

Tridiagonal linear systems of equations can be solved on conventional serial machines in a time proportional to N, where N is the number of equations. The conventional algorithms do not lend themselves directly to parallel computation on computers of the Illiac IV class, in the sense that they appear to be inherently serial. An efficient parallel algorithm is presented in which computation time grows as log(sub-2) N. The algorithm is based on recursive doubling solutions of linear recurrence relations, and can be used to solve recurrence relations of all orders.

The parallel diffusion of cosmic rays in a random magnetic field.

Within the quasi-linear approximation, the existence of the parallel diffusion coefficient for cosmic rays in a random magnetic field (homogeneous, isotropic), despite the slow decay of the interaction between particles and random field, is demonstrated. As an example, the results of a numerical calculation of the parallel diffusion coefficient for a Gaussian random-field correlation function are presented. The numerical results are corroborated by asymptotic analysis and are compared to those of other theories.

A note on parallel and pipeline computation of fast unitary transforms

The parallel and pipeline organization of fast unitary transform algorithms such as the Fast Fourier Transform are discussed. The efficiency is pointed out of a combined parallel-pipeline processor of a transform such as the Haar transform in which 2 to the n minus 1 power hardware butterflies generate a transform of order 2 to the n power every computation cycle.

The question of the possibility of using Associative Computer Devices (ACD) for parallel adaptive discretization of multichannel telemetry information

The method of parallel adaptive discretization of data is considered the most promising and allows the effective compression algorithms to be used for high information-capacity radio telemetry systems. An associative computer device (ACD), i.e., parallel computers based on associative memory units (AMU), are recommended for realization of this method. A detailed discussion of the problems of application of AMU is followed by description of a particular ACD and its recommended use.

Supersonic Mixing and Combustion in Parallel Injection Flow Fields

Adequate prediction techniques for supersonic, mixing, reacting flows are of great importance in the design and performance analysis of supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) engines. Analytical programs for parallel injection flow fields with chemical reaction and turbulent mixing are now available for both single and multiple-jet flows. The application of these analyses to simple flow geometries is discussed, and comparisons also are made with data on the more complex case of multiple-jet, reacting flows. A review is given of Langley investigations of parallel injection flow fields. Among these are single-jet studies of nonreacting, turbulent mixing (H2 in air and H2 in N2), and of reacting turbulent mixing (H2 in air) with both single and multiple jets. Implications of the results of the studies for scramjet fuel injector design are discussed.

A parallel Jacobson-Oksman optimization algorithm

A gradient-dependent optimization technique which exploits the vector-streaming or parallel-computing capabilities of some modern computers is presented. The algorithm, derived by assuming that the function to be minimized is homogeneous, is a modification of the Jacobson-Oksman serial minimization method. In addition to describing the algorithm, conditions insuring the convergence of the iterates of the algorithm and the results of numerical experiments on a group of sample test functions are presented. The results of these experiments indicate that this algorithm will solve optimization problems in less computing time than conventional serial methods on machines having vector-streaming or parallel-computing capabilities.

Parallel and pipeline computation of fast unitary transforms

The letter discusses the parallel and pipeline organization of fast-unitary-transform algorithms such as the fast Fourier transform, and points out the efficiency of a combined parallel-pipeline processor of a transform such as the Haar transform, in which (2 to the n-th power) -1 hardware 'butterflies' generate a transform of order 2 to the n-th power every computation cycle.

Relationships among classes of self-oscillating transistor parallel inverters

It recently has been shown in the literature that many dc-to-square-wave parallel inverters which are widely used in power-conditioning applications can be grouped into one of two families. Each family is characterized by an equivalent RLC network. Based on this approach, a classification procedure is presented for self-oscillating parallel inverters which makes evident natural relationships which exist between various inverter configurations. By utilizing concepts from the basic theory of negative resistance oscillators and the principle of duality as applied to nonlinear networks, a chain of relationships is established which enables a methodical transfer of knowledge gained about one family of inverters to any of the other families in the classification array.

Observations of large parallel electric fields in the auroral ionosphere

Rocket borne measurements employing a double probe technique were used to gather evidence for the existence of electric fields in the auroral ionosphere having components parallel to the magnetic field direction. An analysis of possible experimental errors leads to the conclusion that no known uncertainties can account for the roughly 10 mV/m parallel electric fields that are observed.

Series-parallel method of direct solar array regulation

A 40 watt experimental solar array was directly regulated by shorting out appropriate combinations of series and parallel segments of a solar array. Regulation switches were employed to control the array at various set-point voltages between 25 and 40 volts. Regulation to within + or - 0.5 volt was obtained over a range of solar array temperatures and illumination levels as an active load was varied from open circuit to maximum available power. A fourfold reduction in regulation switch power dissipation was achieved with series-parallel regulation as compared to the usual series-only switching for direct solar array regulation.

Codes for a priority queue on a parallel data bus

Some codes for arbitration of priorities among subsystem computers or peripheral device controllers connected to a parallel data bus are described. At arbitration time, several subsystems present wire-OR, parallel code words to the bus, and the central computer can identify the subsystem of highest priority and determine which of two or more transmission services the subsystem requires. A mathematical discussion of the optimality of the codes with regard to the number of subsystems that may participate in the scheme for a given number of wires is presented along with the number of services that each subsystem may request.
