The Nuclei Of Atoms In The Third Period Of The Periodic Table Of Elements (Monograph No.3)

Nuclei are shown for the elements sodium, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, chlorine, and argon. Individual nucleons are not identified as protons or neutrons. Nucleons are illustrated using a sphere schematic of the wave functions of singular, linear, and tetrahedral nucleon arrangements. Nucleon arrangements in protium, deuteron, triton, helion, and alpha are shown as building blocks in the nuclei of elements in the third period of the periodic table of elements.

RR Lyrae Mid-infrared Period–Luminosity–Metallicity and Period–Wesenheit–Metallicity Relations Based on Gaia DR3 Parallaxes

We present new empirical infrared period–luminosity–metallicity (PLZ) and period–Wesenheit–metallicity (PWZ) relations for RR Lyae based on the latest Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) parallaxes. The relations are provided in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) W1 and W2 bands, as well as in the W(W1, V - W1) and W(W2, V - W2) Wesenheit magnitudes. The relations are calibrated using a very large sample of Galactic halo field RR Lyrae stars with homogeneous spectroscopic [Fe/H] abundances (over 1000 stars in the W1 band), covering a broad range of metallicities (-2.5 ≲ [Fe/H] ≲ 0.0). We test the performance of our PLZ and PWZ relations by determining the distance moduli of both galactic and extragalactic stellar associations: the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy in the Local Group (finding ${\bar{\mu }}_{0}=19.47\pm 0.06$ ), the Galactic globular clusters M4 (${\bar{\mu }}_{0}=11.16\pm 0.05$ ), and the Reticulum globular cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud (${\bar{\mu }}_{0}=18.23\pm 0.06$ ). The distance moduli determined through all our relations are internally self-consistent (within ≲0.05 mag) but are systematically smaller (by ~2–3σ) than previous literature measurements taken from a variety of methods/anchors. However, a comparison with similar recent RR Lyrae empirical relations anchored with EDR3 likewise shows, to varying extents, a systematically smaller distance modulus for PLZ/PWZ RR Lyrae relations.

A photometric and spectroscopic comparison of the cataclysmic variables on the 2 sides of the period gap and at a specific orbital period

New and previously existing photometric colors and spectroscopic H and He line strengths are used to compare CV disk systems below the period gap (P=80-130 min) with those directly above (P=190-240 min). Significant differences are found in the mean U-B, V-J colors and in the H-beta equivalent widths on the two sides of the gap. A detailed comparison from UV-IR of 3 high inclination novalike systems with periods near 3.3 hr (PG1012-029, PG1030 + 590 and V1315 Aql) shows similar continuum distributions (and implied mass accretion rates) but large differences in high excitation lines (He III 640 A and 4686 A; C IV 1550 A).

Synchronization-induced period gaps and ultra-short periods in magnetic cataclysmic binaries

The effects of synchronization on the dynamical evolution of magnetic cataclysmic binaries are investigated theoretically by means of numerical simulations. The results are presented graphically and characterized in detail. It is found that these binary systems can be brought out of contact, producing a period gap. It is inferred that DQ Her stars can evolve into AM Her stars, and that binaries with hydrogen-rich companions can have periods shorter than the conventional limit of 72 h.

A new method for the detection of a periodic signal of unknown shape and period

A method was developed for the detection and measurement of a periodic signal with unknown characteristics in a data set where the existence of such signal was not known. The method detects a signal by using Bayesian probability theory to compare a constant model for the signal to members of a class of models with periodic structure. The method was applied to simulated data generated with both stepwise and sinusoidal light curves, demonstrating that such signals can be sensitively detected and the signal frequency and its shape can be accurately estimated.

Optimizing observing sequence design for periodic and non-periodic phenomena : a Bayesian approach

In this paper we report on our progress on addressing these issues. We have developed an approximate expression for the uniformity of phase coverage that can be used when scheduling to assess candidate sample times. We describe the results obtained using this estimator, and compare them with detailed simulations. We describe our progress and plans for integrating optimizing criteria for both periodic and non-periodic observations into a single observation sequence.

Toward 1% single-photon anharmonicity with periodically poled lithium niobate microring resonators

The absence of the single-photon nonlinearity has been a major roadblock in developing quantum photonic circuits at optical frequencies. In this paper, we demonstrate a periodically poled thin film lithium niobate microring resonator (PPLNMR) that reaches 5,000,000%/W second-harmonic conversion efficiency—almost 20-fold enhancement over the state-of-the-art—by accessing its largest χ <#comment/> ( 2 ) tensor component d 33 via quasi-phase matching. The corresponding single-photon coupling rate g / 2 π <#comment/> is estimated to be 1.2 MHz, which is an important milestone as it approaches the dissipation rate κ <#comment/> / 2 π <#comment/> of best-available lithium niobate microresonators developed in the community. Using a figure of merit defined as g / κ <#comment/> , our device reaches a single-photon nonlinear anharmonicity approaching 1%. We show that, by further scaling of the device, it is possible to improve the single-photon anharmonicity to a regime where photon blockade effect can be manifested.

Identifying Periodic Variable Stars and Eclipsing Binary Systems with Long-term Las Cumbres Observatory Photometric Monitoring of ZTF J0139+5245

We present the results of our search for variable stars using the long-term Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) monitoring of white dwarf ZTF J0139+5245 with the two 1.0 m telescope nodes located at McDonald Observatory using the Sinistro imaging instrument. In this search, we find 38 variable sources, of which 27 are newly discovered or newly classified (71%) based on comparisons with previously published catalogs, thereby increasing the number of detections in the field of view under consideration by a factor of ≈2.5. We find that the improved photometric precision per exposure due to longer exposure time for LCO images combined with the greater time sampling of LCO photometry enables us to increase the total number of detections in this field of view. Each LCO image covers a field of view of 26' × 26' and observes a region close to the Galactic plane (b = -9.°4) abundant in stars with an average stellar density of ≈8 arcmin{sup -2}. We perform aperture photometry and Fourier analysis on over 2000 stars across 1560 LCO images spanning 537 days to find 28 candidate BY Draconis variables, three candidate eclipsing binaries of type EA, and seven candidate eclipsing binaries of type EW. In assigning preliminary classifications to our detections, we demonstrate the applicability of the Gaia color–magnitude diagram as a powerful classification tool for variable-star studies.

Pattern formation on free surfaces via plastic buckling and periodic folding

Spontaneous formation of surface patterns such as folds and creases is widely observed in engineered systems, such as thin films and machined surfaces, as well as in natural systems such as floral petals and leaves. A recognized route for their formation is via surface elastic instabilities. Here we demonstrate an alternate route for their formation —plastic buckling and folding—that occurs when ductile materials are subject to large-strain (>1) deformation. Using in situ imaging of simple-shear deformation of polypropylene, we delineate the mechanics underlying formation of folds and the resulting surface morphology. Here, the fold pattern shows a single wavelength that scales linearly with the size of the plastic zone. An analytical model predicts onset of the plastic buckling instability and characteristics of the folds. Besides obvious applications for controllably generating surface features over large areas, our results suggest a contributing mechanism for origin of surface roughness in solids.
