Degradation and crosslinking of perfluoroalkyl polyethers under X-ray irradiation in ultrahigh vacuum

Degradation of three types of commercially available perfluoroalkyl polyethers (PFPE)-Demnum S200, Fomblin Z25, and Krytox 16256-by X-ray irradiation was studied by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and a mass spectrometer under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. The carbons in the polymers were characterized by chemical shifts of Cls binding energies. Gaseous products containing COF2 and low-molecular-weight fluorocarbons were formed. From Fomblin Z25, which has acetal linkages (-OCF2O-), a large quantity of COF2 gas was evolved. Liquid products became tacky after a long irradiation time, and some did not dissolve in Freon. High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed that molecular weight distribution became broader and that higher molecular weight polymers were formed from Demnum and Krytox. We concluded from these results that degradation and cross-linking took place simultaneously. Demnum crosslinked more easily than the other fluids. The time dependence of both XPS spectra of Cls and mass spectra showed that C-O-bonded carbons in PFPE'S were removed faster than other carbons. There was no substrate effect on the degradation reaction because the first-order rate constants calculated from the change of gaseous products were similar when stainless steel (440C) and gold-coated surfaces were used. Metal fluorides were formed on stainless steel during the reaction. A mechanism for the degradation of PFPE'S is discussed on the basis of their molecular structures.

Tribological reactions of perfluoroalkyl polyether oils with stainless steel under ultrahigh vacuum conditions at room temperature

The reaction between three types of commercial perfluoroalkyl polyether (PFPE) oils and stainless steel 440C was investigated experimentally during sliding under ultrahigh vacuum conditions at room temperature. It is found that the tribological reaction of PFPE is mainly affected by the activity of the mechanically formed fresh surfaces of metals rather than the heat generated at the sliding contacts. The fluorides formed on the wear track act as a boundary layer, reducing the friction coefficient.

Wear of Spur Gears Having a Dithering Motion and Lubricated with a Perfluorinated Polyether Grease

Gear contact surface wear is one of the important failure modes for gear systems. Dedicated experiments are required to enable precise evaluations of gear wear for a particular application. The application of interest for this study required evaluation of wear of gears lubricated with a grade 2 perfluorinated polyether grease and having a dithering (rotation reversal) motion. Experiments were conducted using spur gears made from AISI 9310 steel. Wear was measured using a profilometer at test intervals encompassing 10,000 to 80,000 cycles of dithering motion. The test load level was 1.1 GPa maximum Hertz contact stress at the pitch-line. The trend of total wear as a function of test cycles was linear, and the wear depth rate was approximately 1.2 nm maximum wear depth per gear dithering cycle. The observed wear rate was about 600 times greater than the wear rate for the same gears operated at high speed and lubricated with oil.

Ion-imbibed membranes based on proton conducting aromatic polyether type copolymers and their application in redox flow batteries

The present invention relates to a class of polymer ion imbibed membranes for electrolyte flow batteries. The membranes are a conducting aromatic polyether type copolymer bearing nitrogen heterocycles groups, especially pyridine type. While the membranes can be used in acid, basic, and neutral electrolytes, the nitrogen heterocycles in the membrane interact with acid in the electrolyte to form a proton transport network, so as to keep the proton transport performance of the membrane. The membrane has excellent mechanical stability and thermostability as well as tunable porosity.

Boric acid removal with polyol-functionalized polyether membranes

Poor selectivity of conventional desalination membranes for boron often necessitates multi-stage treatment trains to achieve desired boron removal for end uses such as irrigation. One approach to membrane design for improved single-pass boric acid removal is via incorporation of chelating ligands that selectively sorb boron. In this study, membranes based on epoxy-amine cross-linked poly(glycidyl glycidyl ether) (PGGE) were synthesized and functionalized with N-methyl-d-glucamine (NMDG), a polyol known to interact selectively with boron. PGGE and PGGE-NMDG membranes exhibited boron sorption isotherms that were well-described by dual mode isotherms. PGGE-NMDG sorbed 2.5 mmol B/g dry polymer from a neutral aqueous solution containing 100 mmol B/L, which was almost three times the adsorption density of a commercial boron selective resin, Amberlite IRA743. Further, the membranes were regenerated in acid without a significant loss of boron sorption capacity over four cycles. Interactions between boron and NMDG and PGGE sites (e.g., epoxides) impacted boron diffusion in both membranes. The use of ligand functionalized membranes to capture target solutes such as boron requires high loading of interacting sites to maximize uptake capacity. Establishing fundamental structure/property rules for boron selectivity could lead to new material designs with improved boron separation properties for water purification.

Achieving High Permittivity Paraelectric Behavior in Mesogen-Free Sulfonylated Chiral Polyethers with Smectic C Liquid Crystalline Self-Assembly

Ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) with a high spontaneous polarization (P s ) are of great interest for the fabrication of advanced electronic devices. However, conventional ferroelectric LCPs typically exhibit low spontaneous polarization, only around 1 mC/m 2 . To increase the orientational polarization for ferroelectric LCPs, in this work, we designed mesogen-free comb-shaped LCPs based on isotactic polyepichlorohydrin, which contained highly dipolar sulfonyl groups (dipole moment of 4.5 Debye) in the side chains. The goal was to increase dipole density and induce ferroelectric switching. In this new series of mesogen-free LCPs, the sulfonyl groups were first moved away from the main chain to mitigate strong dipole–dipole interactions. Second, methyl-branched alkyl side chains were implemented to decrease the crystallizability and induce the Smectic C (SmC) self-assembly. Intriguingly, these SmC samples, for the first time, exhibited typical paraelectric behavior (i.e., slim S-shaped single hysteresis loops) with a high dielectric constant in the range of 20–30. Finally, learning from the knowledge obtained from this study, we will be able to design new mesogen-free LCPs with tailor-made dipole–dipole interactions and realize ferroelectricity.

Conductivities of the ionic complexes of two cyclic polyethers

The conductivities of the solid potassium thiocyanate complex of both dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 and dibenzo-18-crown-6 were measured at 300K (27 C). Saturated aqueous potassium thiocyanate and graphite were used as ion-transporting and ion-blocking electrodes, respectively. The ionic conductivity predominated for both samples, but it was many orders of magnitude smaller than the value previously reported. The ionic conductivity of the dicyclohexyl complex (the better conductor) was 0.000003 ohm/cm. Crown complexes, in general, do not appear promising as potassium ion solid electrolytes contrary to claims in the patent literature.

Synthesis of perfluorinated polyethers

A series of highly fluorinated acetylenes was prepared and their cyclization reactions were studied. A series of perfluoropolytriazines with -CF2I pendent groups were prepared. These materials can be cured thermally or photochemically to an elastomeric gum. Perfluoropolytriazines with -CN pendent groups were prepared. These materials can be crosslinked by reaction with terephthalonitrile oxide.

Gas transport characteristics of supramolecular networks of metal-coordinated highly branched Poly(ethylene oxide)

Model systems are developed and investigated to better understand the effect of polyether-metal ion interactions on gas separation characteristics. These systems help answer current questions raised by the substantial body of research on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) dispersed in polyethers to improve gas separation performance, where favorable interactions between the metal centers and polyethers are preferred to improve interfacial compatibility. Specifically, we investigate CO 2 /gas transport properties of supramolecular networks comprising cross-linked poly(ethylene oxide) (XLPEO) and dissociable salts, including LiClO 4 , Ni(BF 4 ) 2 , and Cu(BF 4 ) 2 . Increasing the salt content increases the glass transition temperature (T g ) and generally decreases gas diffusivity and permeability, which can be successfully described using a T g -integrated free volume model with an expression similar to the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher (VTF) equation. Surprisingly, low loadings of LiClO 4 and Cu(BF 4 ) 2 (2 mass% or less) can increase gas permeability by 30%–70% without affecting the CO 2 /gas selectivity. This increase correlates with polyether-metal ion dynamics as measured by dielectric spectroscopy. Understanding how interaction-mediated dynamics affect gas transport will be instrumental to designing MOF-based mixed matrix materials for gas separations.

Condition assessment of cable insulation materials in advanced reactor environments

While existing cable insulation materials are sufficient for use in the current reactor fleet, environmental conditions inside some advanced reactors, such as small modular reactors, will be substantially harsher. The work herein was conducted to assess the performance and overall survivability of several high-temperature, radiation resistant insulation polymers in a simulated small modular reactor environment. The materials evaluated under this research include polyether ether ketone, polyimide, and silicone rubber. These polymers were subjected to 1000 h of environmental stress exposure under two different conditions: 1) high temperature (i.e., 250 °C) in atmospheric pressure and 2) high temperature in a low-pressure vacuum (i.e., less than 2 psia). During the environmental exposure process, each insulation was periodically tested using several materials characterization techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, oxidation induction time, and oxidation induction temperature. The objective of this testing was to assess and monitor changes that occurred in the thermal and chemical properties of the materials during the environmental exposures. The overall survivability of each insulation was assessed based on these property changes. The results of this research revealed that the polyimide and polyether ether ketone insulations had significantly better thermal and chemical stability than the silicone rubber during both the high-temperature atmospheric and vacuum exposures. Both polyimide and polyether ether ketone experienced minimal reductions in their chemical and thermal properties over the course of 1000 h in the simulated environments. Finally, based on this research, polyimide and polyether ether ketone show promise as potential base materials for small modular reactor cable insulation.
