Multivariate prognosis of battery advanced state of health via transformers

De-risking energy storage investments necessary to meet CO 2 reduction targets requires a deep understanding of the connections between battery health, design, and use. The historical definition of the battery state of health (SOH) as the percentage of current versus initial capacity is inadequate for this purpose, motivating an expanded SOH consisting of an interrelated set of descriptors including capacity, energy, ionic and electronic impedances, open-circuit voltages, and microstructure metrics. In this work, we introduce deep transformer networks for the simultaneous prognosis of 28 battery SOH descriptors using two cycling datasets representing six lithium-ion cathode chemistries, multiple electrolyte/anode compositions, and different charge-discharge scenarios. The accuracy of these predictions for battery life (with an unprecedented mean absolute error of 19 cycles in predicting end of life for a lithium-iron-phosphate fast-charging dataset) illustrates the promise of deep learning toward providing enhanced understanding and control of battery health.

PDRG1 predicts a poor prognosis and facilitates the proliferation and metastasis of colorectal cancer

Highlights: • PDRG1 is overexpressed in colorectal cancer tissues and is associated with poor prognosis of colorectal cancer patients. • PDRG1 regulates the proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle progression and metastasis of colorectal cancer cells. • PDRG1 promotes the proliferation, migration and invasion of colorectal cancer via p21-mediated cell cycle progression. The incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasing yearly and CRC patients are becoming younger in global. Evidences have revealed the carcinogenic effect of p53 and DNA damage-regulated gene 1 (PDRG1) in several types of tumors. However, its biological function is yet to be investigated in CRC. This study aimed to unveil the prooncogenic role of PDRG1 in CRC.

Data-driven distillation and precision prognosis in traumatic brain injury with interpretable machine learning

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects how the brain functions in the short and long term. Resulting patient outcomes across physical, cognitive, and psychological domains are complex and often difficult to predict. Major challenges to developing personalized treatment for TBI include distilling large quantities of complex data and increasing the precision with which patient outcome prediction (prognoses) can be rendered. We developed and applied interpretable machine learning methods to TBI patient data. We show that complex data describing TBI patients' intake characteristics and outcome phenotypes can be distilled to smaller sets of clinically interpretable latent factors. We demonstrate that 19 clusters of TBI outcomes can be predicted from intake data, a ~ 6× improvement in precision over clinical standards. Finally, we show that 36% of the outcome variance across patients can be predicted. These results demonstrate the importance of interpretable machine learning applied to deeply characterized patients for data-driven distillation and precision prognosis.

Mixture Model Framework for Traumatic Brain Injury Prognosis Using Heterogeneous Clinical and Outcome Data

Prognoses of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) outcomes are neither easily nor accurately determined from clinical indicators. This is due in part to the heterogeneity of damage inflicted to the brain, ultimately resulting in diverse and complex outcomes. Using a data-driven approach on many distinct data elements may be necessary to describe this large set of outcomes and thereby robustly depict the nuanced differences among TBI patients’ recovery. In this work, we develop a method for modeling large heterogeneous data types relevant to TBI. Our approach is geared toward the probabilistic representation of mixed continuous and discrete variables with missing values. The model is trained on a dataset encompassing a variety of data types, including demographics, blood-based biomarkers, and imaging findings. In addition, it includes a set of clinical outcome assessments at 3, 6, and 12 months post-injury. The model is used to stratify patients into distinct groups in an unsupervised learning setting. We use the model to infer outcomes using input data, and show that the collection of input data reduces uncertainty of outcomes over a baseline approach. In addition, we quantify the performance of a likelihood scoring technique that can be used to self-evaluate the extrapolation risk of prognosis on unseen patients.

The loss or absence of minimal residual disease of <0·1% at any time after two cycles of consolidation chemotherapy in CBFB–MYH11 ‐positive acute myeloid leukaemia indicates poor prognosis

Summary No consensus has been reached on the relationship between CBFB‐MYH11 copies and prognosis. Of 1525 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients, 58 with CBFB‐MYH11‐positive AML (16/58 patients with c‐kit mutation) were retrospectively analyzed with a median follow‐up duration of 29.8 (range: 4.8–74.4) months. Of these, 25/58 (43.1%) patients underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo‐HSCT), 10 of whom had the c‐kit mutation. Of the 33 patients who did not undergo allo‐HSCT, recurrence in patients with CBFB‐MYH11/ABL level >0.1% at any time after two consolidation cycles was significantly higher than in patients with CBFB‐MYH11/ABL level <0.1% (61.9% vs. 0%, P = 0.001); further, the 3‐year relapse‐free survival (RFS; 31.4% vs. 100%, P = 0.004) and event‐free survival (EFS; 33.1% vs. 100%, P = 0.004) were significantly decreased in patients with CBFB‐MYH11/ABL level >0.1% at any time after two consolidation cycles. The 3‐year RFS and EFS rates were lower in patients who did not receive allo‐HSCT than in those who did (31.4% vs 84.6%, P = 0.000; 31.4% vs. 80.8%, P = 0.001). CBFB‐MYH11‐positive AML patients with CBFB‐MYH11/ABL level >0.1% at any time after two cycles of consolidation had poor prognoses, and allo‐HSCT could improve their survival.

Dynamic Bayesian Networks for Fault Prognosis

A dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN)-based fault prognosis framework is proposed in this study to predict the future fault probabilities of gradual faults. The proposed framework utilizes the trend in prediction error generated from data driven forecasting models to estimate the future fault beliefs. The accuracy and scalability of the proposed method is evaluated using the data from a Modelica-based virtual testbed. Overall, the developed framework demonstrates good potential in estimating future fault probabilities of gradual faults.

Comparative assessment of prognosis of the stop stimulus and trapezoidal rotation programs

For prognosis of the diagnostic possibilities of the stop stimulus and trapezoidal rotation programs with respect to the nystagmus response, 24 healthy young persons with normal auditory and vestibular analysers were studied experimentally. The trapezoidal program more accurately reflects the function and tone balance of the vestibular system than the stop stimulus program and causes the subject no unpleasant sensations during the study. Some optimum couples, acceleration and armchair rotation rate, necessary for effective deviation of the cupuloendolymphatic system were determined. The maximum angular velocity of the slow nystagmus component was more informative than nystagmus duration. The trapezoidal program is recommended for otoneurological practice and the maximum angular velocity of the slow nystagmus component as the basic index.

A Feasibility Study for Perioperative Ventricular Tachycardia Prognosis and Detection and Noise Detection Using a Neural Network and Predictive Linear Operators

To locate the accessory pathway(s) in preexicitation syndromes, epicardial and endocardial ventricular mapping is performed during anterograde ventricular activation via accessory pathway(s) from data originally received in signal form. As the number of channels increases, it is pertinent that more automated detection of coherent/incoherent signals is achieved as well as the prediction and prognosis of ventricular tachywardia (VT). Today's computers and computer program algorithms are not good in simple perceptual tasks such as recognizing a pattern or identifying a sound. This discrepancy, among other things, has been a major motivating factor in developing brain-based, massively parallel computing architectures. Neural net paradigms have proven to be effective at pattern recognition tasks. In signal processing, the picking of coherent/incoherent signals represents a pattern recognition task for computer systems. The picking of signals representing the onset ot VT also represents such a computer task. We attacked this problem by defining four signal attributes for each potential first maximal arrival peak and one signal attribute over the entire signal as input to a back propagation neural network. One attribute was the predicted amplitude value after the maximum amplitude over a data window. Then, by using a set of known (user selected) coherent/incoherent signals, and signals representing the onset of VT, we trained the back propagation network to recognize coherent/incoherent signals, and signals indicating the onset of VT. Since our output scheme involves a true or false decision, and since the output unit computes values between 0 and 1, we used a Fuzzy Arithmetic approach to classify data as coherent/incoherent signals. Furthermore, a Mean-Square Error Analysis was used to determine system stability. The neural net based picking coherent/incoherent signal system achieved high accuracy on picking coherent/incoherent signals on different patients. The system also achieved a high accuracy of picking signals which represent the onset of VT, that is, VT immediately followed these signals. A special binary representation of the input and output data allowed the neural network to train very rapidly as compared to another standard decimal or normalized representations of the data.

Diagnosis and Prognosis of Weapon Systems

The Prognostics Framework is a set of software tools with an open architecture that affords a capability to integrate various prognostic software mechanisms and to provide information for operational and battlefield decision-making and logistical planning pertaining to weapon systems. The Prognostics NASA Tech Briefs, February 2005 17 Framework is also a system-level health -management software system that (1) receives data from performance- monitoring and built-in-test sensors and from other prognostic software and (2) processes the received data to derive a diagnosis and a prognosis for a weapon system. This software relates the diagnostic and prognostic information to the overall health of the system, to the ability of the system to perform specific missions, and to needed maintenance actions and maintenance resources. In the development of the Prognostics Framework, effort was focused primarily on extending previously developed model-based diagnostic-reasoning software to add prognostic reasoning capabilities, including capabilities to perform statistical analyses and to utilize information pertaining to deterioration of parts, failure modes, time sensitivity of measured values, mission criticality, historical data, and trends in measurement data. As thus extended, the software offers an overall health-monitoring capability.

Development and validation of a next-generation sequencing-based multigene assay to predict the prognosis of estrogen receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer

Purpose: Multigene assays provide useful prognostic information regarding hormone receptor (HR)-positive breast cancer. Next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based platforms have numerous advantages including reproducibility and adaptability in local laboratories. Here we aimed to develop and validate an NGS-based multigene assay to predict the distant recurrence risk. Experimental Design: In total, 179 genes including 30 reference genes highly correlated with the 21-gene recurrence score (RS) algorithm were selected from public databases. Targeted RNA-sequencing was performed using 250 and 93 archived breast cancer samples with a known RS in the training and verification sets, respectively, to develop the algorithm and NGS–Prognostic Score (NGS-PS). The assay was validated in 413 independent samples with long-term follow-up data on distant metastasis. Results: In the verification set, the NGS-PS and 21-gene RS displayed 91.4% concurrence (85/93 samples). In the validation cohort of 413 samples, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve plotted using NGS-PS values classified for distant recurrence was 0.76. The best NGS-PS cut-off value predicting distant metastasis was 20. Furthermore, 269 and 144 patients were classified as low- and high-risk patients in accordance with the cut-off. Five- and 10-year estimates of distant metastasis–free survival (DMFS) for low- versus high-risk groups were 97.0% versus 77.8% and 93.2% versus 64.4%, respectively. The age-related HR for distant recurrence without chemotherapy was 9.73 (95% CI, 3.59–26.40) and 3.19 (95% CI, 1.40–7.29) for patients aged ≤50 and >50 years, respectively. Conclusions: The newly developed and validated NGS-based multigene assay can predict the distant recurrence risk in ER-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer.

Prognosis of Wind Turbine Gearbox Bearing Failures Using SCADA and Modeled Data

Predictive maintenance and condition monitoring systems for wind turbines have seen increased adoption to minimize downtime, reducing operation and maintenance costs. On today’s wind power plants, the integrated supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system provides low- frequency operational data that can be leveraged to quantify a wind turbine’s health. The aim of this study is to utilize machine-learning techniques to predict axial cracking failures in wind turbine gearbox bearings up to 1 month ahead of time. The failures are assumed to have occurred when the investigated bearing was replaced. While current SCADA systems show the overall condition of a wind turbine, often they do not allow for the investigation of specific gearbox bearings’ health. To enrich bearing fault signatures, additional data are computed through physics-based models using gearbox design information. Based on SCADA data, modeled data, and bearing failure log data from an actual wind plant, the performances of different machine-learning models on unseen data are then evaluated using industry-standard metrics such as precision, recall, and F1 score. Results show the overall system performance enhancement in predicting bearing failure when modeled data are included with SCADA data. The reduction in terms of false alarms is about 50%, and improvement in terms of precision and F1 score is about 33% and 12% respectively, based on the best modeling case in this study.
