Extended performance solar electric propulsion thrust system study. Volume 1: Executive summary

Several thrust system design concepts were evaluated and compared using the specifications of the most advanced 30 cm engineering model thruster as the technology base. The extensions in thruster performance required for the Halley's comet mission were defined and alternative thrust system concepts were designed. Confirmation testing and analysis of thruster and power-processing components were performed, and the feasibility of satisfying extended performance requirements was verified. A baseline design was selected from the alternatives considered, and the design analysis and documentation were refined. A program development plan was formulated that outlines the work structure considered necessary for developing, qualifying, and fabricating the flight hardware for the baseline thrust system within the time frame of a project to rendezvous with Halley's comet. An assessment was made of the costs and risks associated with a baseline thrust system as provided to the mission project under this plan. Critical procurements and interfaces were identified and defined. Results are presented.

An interactive computer approach to performing resource analysis for a multi-resource/multi-project problem

New planning techniques and supporting computer tools are needed for the optimization of resources and costs for space transportation and payload systems. Heavy emphasis on cost effective utilization of resources has caused NASA program planners to look at the impact of various independent variables that affect procurement buying. A description is presented of a category of resource planning which deals with Spacelab inventory procurement analysis. Spacelab is a joint payload project between NASA and the European Space Agency and will be flown aboard the Space Shuttle starting in 1980. In order to respond rapidly to the various procurement planning exercises, a system was built that could perform resource analysis in a quick and efficient manner. This system is known as the Interactive Resource Utilization Program (IRUP). Attention is given to aspects of problem definition, an IRUP system description, questions of data base entry, the approach used for project scheduling, and problems of resource allocation.

Evaluation program for secondary spacecraft cells: Initial evaluation tests of General Electric Company 12.0 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium spacecraft cells for the international ultraviolet explorer

An evaluation test program was conducted to insure that all cells put into the life cycle program are of high quality by the screening of cells found to have electrolyte leakage, internal shorts, low capacity, or inability of any cell to recover its open-circuit voltage above 1.150 volts during the internal short test. The 20 cells were manufactured for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The cells are from a lot of 175 cells procured for the International Ultraviolet Explorer project. Due to a change in requirements, the project selected to use 6.0 ampere-hour cells. Therefore, the remaining cells of this lot have been placed in storage at GSFC for use on a future GSFC project. All the cells are rated at 12.0 ampere-hours and contain double ceramic seals. Test limits specify those values in which a cell is to be terminated from a particular charge or discharge. Requirements are referred to as normally expected values based on past performance of aerospace nickel cadmium cells with demonstrated life characteristics.

Reliable Ignition of LOX-LCH4 Propellants

No cryogenic Reaction Control System (RCS) has ever flown in space. Cryogenic propellants are baselined by HLS and CLPS partners and are the key use case for future ISRU manufactured propellants. A reliable LOX/LCH 4 RCS is an enabling technology for human Lunar and Mars exploration. In previous thermal vacuum (<275 F, <10 torr) testing at NASA GRC Plum Brook, the team uncovered anomalous LOX/LCH4 engine ignition phenomena where flame kernels quenched at these ultra cold hardware temperatures, leading to many pulses where the engines would not light. In 2022, the project was able to recreate the no light condition with an upgraded Frost-Mint test stand at JSC. This project implemented test stand improvements and procured propellants and follow on engine components for a hot fire campaign beginning in November 2024 which will attempt to ignite the RCS engine at ultra cold vacuum conditions by modifying the engine mixture ratio. New modeling techniques were implemented to account for past no lights and are an enabling method to make lunar surface go no go predictions based on hardware conditions. This was enabled by significant improvements to the Frost Mint system, which reduced moisture build up and leaks, increased propellant availability, leading to more attempts at thermal vacuum hot-fires.

A study of microstructural characteristics of Ni-based superalloys at high temperatures

The microstructural characteristics of the Ni-based superalloy MAR-M246(Hf) which is used in manufacturing the components of the Space Shuttle's main engine have been studied. These superalloys need optimal heat treatment to get the best results. To find the optimum heat treatment the technique of differential thermal analysis and the optical photomicrographs are being planned to be utilized. In the first phase, the existing experimental equipment like cutting, grinding/polishing machines and metallurgical microscope have been set up to cut/polish and take the photomicrographs. In the beginning of this year an order was placed for the Leitz Mettalux-3 microscope with a hot stage for in-situ observation of the superalloy samples. The hot stage was tested for the first time, alloying the thermocouple with the Tantulum heating element and has not been installed finally by the supplier. A Perkin Elmer Differential Thermal Analyzer (DTA 1700) was procured in the first year of the project. Samples of MAR-M246(Hf), MAR-M247, Waspaloy, Udimet-41, CMSX-2 and CMSX-3 (polycrystalline and single crystals) have been studied using differential thermal analyzer.

Evaluation of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Electronics for Extreme Cold Environments

Deep space and Icy Moon missions (Titan, Enceladus, Ceres, Europa, & Ganymede) will need qualified extreme environment capable components for electronic systems located in extremities of their rovers and spacecraft. Commercial off the shelf (COTS) components would be advantageous to use for some aspects of such projects, given that they are easier to procure and offer a broad range of functionalities. Furthermore, theoretical and experimental data suggest that many COTS parts are capable of operation, and not just storage, at temperatures well beyond the manufacturer specified temperature limits. To help address the challenges presented at near cryogenic temperatures, a COTS selection knowledge base is being developed to estimate the performance of COTS components within cold environments. The knowledge base captures queries from a range of information sources such as cold functionality test results for part types and families, theoretical and experimental literature reviews and key findings are summarized here. In addition, a selection of components are planned to be examined for their performance to near cryogenic temperatures to generate a methodology for identification and verification of the COTS candidates. As the qualification of COTS parts for extreme environments can be very costly, this knowledge base can serve to reduce qualification time and cost by pre-selecting and limiting candidates.
