Anomaly detection in PV systems using constrained low-rank and sparse decomposition

PV (photovoltaic) systems, also known as solar panel systems, play an essential role in the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and the promotion of renewable energy. Through the conversion of sunlight into usable energy, electricity is generated without emitting greenhouse gases and producing pollutants. Notwithstanding the evolutionary significance of PV systems, the occurrence of defects and anomalies in PV systems may result in diminished power output, consequently impeding the efficiency of the systems and potentially resulting in hazards in certain circumstances. Therefore, early detection of faults and anomalies in PV systems is imperative to guarantee the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the systems. In this article, we develop a signal decomposition for the purpose of anomaly detection in PV systems. The proposed methodology is grounded on the concept of low-rank and sparse decomposition, with consideration given to the signs of the decomposed low-rank and sparse components, as well as the smooth variations within and between periods in the mean signals. Through the implementation of Monte Carlo simulations, we showcase the efficacy of our proposed methodology in identifying anomalies of varying durations and magnitudes in PV systems. A case study is employed to validate the proposed methodology in detecting anomalies in real PV systems.

Measuring Irradiance for Bifacial PV Systems

The advent of bifacial PV systems drives new requirements for irradiance measurement at PV projects for monitoring and assessment purposes. While there are several approaches, there is still no uniform guidance for what irradiance parameters to measure and for the optimal selection and placement of irradiance sensors at bifacial arrays. Standards are emerging to address these topics but are not yet available. In this paper we review approaches to bifacial irradiance monitoring which are being discussed in the research literature and pursued in early systems, to provide a preliminary guide and framework for developers planning bifacial projects.

Application of Manufacturing Quality Management Principles to PV System Installations

To help SETO/DOE achieve its goals, the IBTS team proposed a project addressing system reliability by improving installation standards and quality management. The proposed approach was designed to help achieve measurable reductions in installation defect density and improvements in the performance of PV systems by optimizing design and installation of residential and commercial PV systems. This approach addressed the soft costs associated with installations and quality management. The project demonstrated improved system reliability and reduced PV system installation costs. The software developed improved operations, decreased risk, and increased the overall value of PV systems across their lifecycle. The project used several data collection methods, including extensive industry surveys, face-to-face high-level interviews at industry conferences, stakeholder teleconferences, and in-depth interviews conducted by IBTS staff. Results from the research found the industry needs a uniform assessment method for national providers to be more efficient; the software should support both code officials and installers; most industry stakeholders would find value in a centralized software system that allows them to collect, report, and review information on in-process and completed solar installations; and mobile solutions that bridge existing knowledge gaps with inspectors and integrate with existing methodologies (such as permitting software) are of great value. The software solution developed is web-based, allowing for national access, and is built on a Google Firebase platform that can handle significant users and data. It can be used onsite or remotely, allowing for code compliance to continue despite ongoing pandemic related delays or shutdowns for local economies. The information provided by the software tool allows users to uniformly assess a system for compliance and use that aggregated data to identify training topics or create internal process designed to improving issues and reducing occurrence. This solution has multiple benefits in managing quality at time of use and promoting an increase in future safety and quality through education. Perhaps most importantly, this software increases public safety by ensuring compliance of installed systems and allows for local AHJs to remotely engage specialized and qualified solar specific expertise for oversite of the installation in their jurisdictions. Data analysis provides the quality feedback loop identifying the root cause of failure and drives installation practices to improve through training and education, resulting in systems with higher performance, greater reliability, and reduced operations and maintenance costs. With the successful completion of this project, the industry can expect reduced soft costs and increased performance and safety and will ultimately benefit from longer performing systems that cost less to operate.

Modeling, testing, and mitigation of electromagnetic pulse on PV systems

Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) poses a significant threat to the normal operation of power systems, especially with the increasing penetration of renewable energy. Without adequate protection, EMP can severely damage equipment or result in circuit breakdowns or short circuits. Solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities are particularly susceptible to EMP since PV systems are outdoors and exposed to EMP radiation. To assess and mitigate this threat, this paper summarizes various models and tests used to study the effects of EMP on PV systems, assesses the nature of the threat, and identifies measures to mitigate it. The paper provides a comprehensive review by categorizing analytical methods based on their pros and cons, introducing and describing EMP-related events, and providing a taxonomy of analytical methods for studying EMP. This paper compares the processes of modeling, testing, and mitigating EMP at both the component and system levels of PV systems. Furthermore, it also presents a case study that reveals the vulnerability of solar inverters to EMP using the pulse current injection method. Finally, the paper discusses some of the remaining challenges that should be considered in future solar PV system design and deployment.

PV System Availability from Commercial and Utility-Scale Systems [Slides]

In the PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative, we partner with photovoltaic (PV) fleet owners to collect time-series PV production data, and publish aggregated, anonymized results. An assessment of system availability is conducted on 1128 systems which passed our data quality checks, and include cumulative energy meter data. Overall inverter availability is low in the first 6 months of system performance before reaching steady-state by the end of the first year. System-level aggregated data shows a median (P50) system availability of 0.99, and a lower P90 value of 0.95. A dependence on system size is also identified, with worse inverter availability results for larger PV systems. Potential causes of this effect are under investigation.

The Numerical Computation of Clear-Sky Transmittance and Reflectance of Solar Radiation for the Modeling of PV System Performance

Modeling of photovoltaics (PV) system performance requires numerical computation of plane-of-array (POA) irradiances that are influenced by atmospheric absorption and scattering. Clear-sky transmittance and reflectance of diffuse irradiance are essential for the understanding of solar radiation related to multiple reflection between land surface and clouds. This study analytically solves the radiative transfer equation for clear-sky conditions and numerically computes the transmittance and reflectance of diffuse irradiance as functions of the optical thickness of the atmosphere. The computation will be implemented in all-sky radiative transfer models to improve their computational efficiency.

Detection of Cyber Attacks in Grid-tied PV Systems Using Dynamic Watermarking

This paper presents of an active detection scheme for detecting cyber attacks on sensors controlling a grid-tied PV systems. Several cyber vulnerabilities in Grid tied PV Systems are discussed. The defense mechanism introduces a private (secret) watermarking signal into the control inputs of the grid-tied inverter system. This will enable the detection of any malicious manipulation of sensor measurements. Based on the measured data, two statistical tests are conducted to identify anomalies in the system using the presence of the watermarking signal. It shown that when a sensor data is compromised and/or replaced by a pre-recorded healthy signal, both test 1 and 2 exhibit high values indicating a possible malicious activity. The robustness of the proposed algorithm is tested and validated with several attack scenarios on a grid tied PV system. Select results from an experimental setup are discussed.

An Active Detection Scheme for Sensor Spoofing in Grid-tied PV Systems

In this paper an active detection scheme for sensor spoofing (manipulated externally via a cyber attack) in grid-tied PV systems is discussed. The core of the proposed active detection scheme is to introduce a private (secret) watermarking signal into the control inputs of the DC-DC converter and DC-AC inverter stages to detect any malicious spoofing (manipulation) of voltage/current sensor measurements controlling both the DC-DC converter maximum power point tracking (MPPT) stage and the DC-AC inverter of the grid-tied PV system. Several types of possible spoofing mechanisms (attack models) are discussed. The proposed sensor spoofing attack detector system consists of injecting a small magnitude of digital watermarking signal (DWS) and conduct three statistical watermark tests on the reported sensor measurements to determine if a) the proposed system is healthy and operating as expected b) if sensor signals were spoofed (manipulated) externally or c) if a particular sensor is malfunctioning due to a faulty hardware. It is shown via extensive simulations that the proposed DWS approach is robust in detecting malicious external manipulation of sensors controlling the grid tied PV system. A testing platform is currently under development and the experimental results will be discussed in the conference presentation.

Introducing the Baseline Performance Reference (BPR) for Irradiance in PV System Applications

Photovoltaic (PV) reference cells, modules, and arrays respond in a complex manner to the many variables that define their operating environment. PV reference cells for irradiance measurement have similarities but also differences to operational PV modules. For this reason, a more neutral and a well-defined generic PV reference cell is needed, whose characteristics are close enough to most operational PV devices to make stable performance indicators possible but whose characteristics are not necessarily identical to any of them. This poster describes a new well-defined reference quantity for outdoor PV measurements, called the baseline performance reference (BPR).
