Identification of Presolar Grains in Quick Look Samples of Asteroid Bennu Returned By the OSIRIS-REx Mission

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft returned regolith sample from the B-type asteroid Bennu on September 24, 2023. The first samples to be analyzed, termed the Quick Look samples, are comprised of material collected from the avionics deck of the OSIRIS-REx sample canister. Initial mineralogical analysis of the Quick Look sample revealed a diversity of components, including hydrated and anhydrous silicates, sulfides, magnetite, phosphates, and abundant organic matter. Each constituent has their own origin and history, and their study can inform us of the history of Bennu and its parent asteroid. The analysis plan for asteroid Bennu samples is guided by hypotheses that address specific periods of Bennu’s history, from the pre-accretionary epoch to the OSIRIS-REx epoch. The pre-accretionary epoch studies aim to characterize materials that predate the formation of the solar system. One hypothesis that falls under this epoch is that Bennu contains presolar materials derived from diverse sources. These presolar materials include stardust grains that condensed from the outflows of evolved stars or the ejecta of novae and supernovae (SN), as well as organic matter that formed in the interstellar medium. Here we report the identification of C-rich presolar stardust grains in the Bennu Quick Look sample. Isotopically anomalous organic matter in this sample is reported in.

Initial Fermi orbital descriptors for FLOSIC calculations: The quick-FOD method

Fermi orbital descriptors (FODs) play a key role in Fermi-Löwdin orbital self-interaction correction (FLOSIC) calculations used to remove self-interaction from approximate density functionals. Optimal FODs are obtained by minimizing the self-interaction-corrected total energy, and, in this process, identifying initial sets of FODs becomes crucial. Here we propose, implement and test a novel method for automatically initializing FODs, quick-FOD, based on the minimization of an empirical energy expression that involves a Coulomb-like FOD-electron density attraction, an FOD-FOD short-range repulsion, and an exchange-like FOD-density repulsion. Quick-FOD successfully reproduces FOD arrangements in qualitatively good agreement with Lewis theory and with full-fledged FLOSIC calculations.

Less-Than-Lethal Quick Deploy Inflatable Hall/Door Barrier: VISTA Feasibility Study

Physical protection of public buildings has long been a concern of police and security services where a balance of facility security and personnel safety is vital. Due to the nature of public spaces, the use of permanently installed and deploy-on-demand physical barrier systems must be safe for the legitimate occupants and visitors of that space. Such systems must seek to mitigate the personal and organizational consequences of unintentionally seriously injuring or killing an innocent bystander by slamming a heavy, rigid, and quick-deploying barrier into place. Consideration and implementation of less-than-lethal technologies is necessary to reduce risk to visitors and building personnel. One potential barrier solution is a fast-acting, high-strength, composite airbag barrier system for doorways and hallways to quickly deploy a less-than-lethal barrier at entry points as well as isolate intruders who have already gained access. This system is envisioned to be stored within an architecturally attractive selectively frangible shell that could be permanently installed at a facility or installed in remote or temporary locations as dictated by risk. The system would be designed to be activated remotely (hardwired or wireless) from a Central Alarm Station (CAS) or other secure location.

An evaluation of a quick release fluid coupling having identical mating halves

A new quick disconnect fluid coupling features identical halves that provide male/female mating. Advantages are reduction of inventory and renewal of defective seals without installing new ones. Two designs were evaluated: A hermaphroditic connector (coupling half converts from one sex to another), and a nonconvertible coupling using a face or but type coupling- to-coupling seal. The hermaphroditic coupling was found superior. Advantages are (1) fewer seals used, reducing leakage, and (2) defective seals quickly replaced by simply converting both halves from one sex to another. Seals are standard O-rings and protected against contamination. The contributing factors to a low manufacturing cost are the shutoff valve and latching method.

Preliminary engineering study: Quick opening valve MSFC high Reynolds number wind tunnel

FluiDyne Engineering Corporation has conducted a preliminary engineering study of a quick-opening valve for the MSFC High Reynolds Number Wind Tunnel under NASA Contract NAS8-35056. The subject valve is intended to replace the Mylar diaphragm system as the flow initiation device for the tunnel. Only valves capable of opening within 0.05 sec. and providing a minimum of 11.4 square feet of flow area were considered. Also, the study focused on valves which combined the quick-opening and tight shutoff features in a single unit. A ring sleeve valve concept was chosen for refinement and pricing. Sealing for tight shutoff, ring sleeve closure release and sleeve actuation were considered. The resulting cost estimate includes the valve and requisite modifications to the facility to accommodate the valve as well as the associated design and development work.

Relief Valve Opens And Closes Quickly

Relief valve opens quickly to relieve excess pressure and closes quickly when pressure drops slightly below relief pressure. O-ring exposes one or more ports under high pressure, releasing excess pressurized fluid. Adjusting screw used to change compression on Belleville-spring washers and to set pressure at which valve opens. Designed for use aboard Space Shuttle to vent pressurized hydrazine to vacuum, valve concept useful in industrial applications where rapid opening, rapid closing, or low susceptibility to blockage by vented fluid required.

Quick actuating closure and handling system

A quick activating closure and handling system, which utilizes conical sections for locking, was developed to allow quick access to the combustor internal components of the 8 ft High Temperature Tunnel. These critical components include the existing methane spraybar, a transpiration cooled nozzle and the new liquid oxygen (LOX) injection system housed within the combustor. A substantial cost savings will be realized once the mechanism is installed since it will substantially reduce the access time and increase the time available for conducting wind tunnel tests. A need exists for more frequent inspections when the wind tunnel operates at the more severe conditions generated by using LOX in the combustor. A loads analysis and a structural (finite element) analysis were conducted to verify that the new closure system is compatible with the existing pressure shell. In addition, strain gages were placed on the pressure vessel to verify how the pressure shell reacts to transient pressure loads. A scale model of the new closure system was built to verify the operation of the conical sections in the locking mechanisms.

A quick accurate model of nozzle backflow

Backflow from nozzles is a major source of contamination on spacecraft. If the craft contains any exposed high voltages, the neutral density produced by the nozzles in the vicinity of the craft needs to be known in order to assess the possibility of Paschen breakdown or the probability of sheath ionization around a region of the craft that collects electrons for the plasma. A model for backflow has been developed for incorporation into the Environment-Power System Analysis Tool (EPSAT) which quickly estimates both the magnitude of the backflow and the species makeup of the flow. By combining the backflow model with the Simons (1972) model for continuum flow it is possible to quickly estimate the density of each species from a nozzle at any position in space. The model requires only a few physical parameters of the nozzle and the gas as inputs and is therefore ideal for engineering applications.

Quick application/release nut with engagement indicator (commercial application of an innovative nut design)

This is an assembly which permits a fastener to be inserted or removed from either side with an indicator of fastener engagement. The nut has a plurality of segments, preferably at least three segments, which are internally threaded, spring loaded apart by an internal spring, and has detents on opposite sides which force the nut segments into operative engagement with a threaded member when pushed in and release the segments for quick insertion or removal of the fastener when moved out. When the nut is installed, end pressure on the detents presses the nut segments into operative engagement with a threaded member where continued rotation locks the structure together with the detents depressed to indicate positive locking engagement of the nut. On removal, counterclockwise rotation relieves the endwise pressure on the detents, permitting internal springs to force the detents outward, allowing the nut segments to move outward and separate to permit quick removal of the fastener.

Quick application/release nut with engagement indicator

A composite nut is shown which permits a fastener to be inserted or removed from either side with an indicator of fastener engagement. The nut has a plurality of segments, preferably at least three segments, which are internally threaded, spring loaded apart by an internal spring, and has detents on opposite sides which force the nut segments into operative engagements with a threaded member when pushed in and release the segments for quick insertion or removal of the nut when moved out. When the nut is installed, end pressure on one of the detents presses the nut segments into operative engagement with a threaded member where continued rotation locks the structure together with the detents depressed to indicate positive locking engagement of the nut. On removal, counterclockwise rotation of the nut relieves the endwise pressure on the detents, permitting internal springs to force the detents outward and allowing the nut segments to move outward and separate to permit quick removal of the fastener.
