Radar image registration and rectification

Two techniques for radar image registration and rectification are presented. In the registration method, a general 2-D polynomial transform is defined to accomplish the geometric mapping from one image into the other. The degree and coefficients of the polynomial are obtained using an a priori found tiepoint data set. In the second part of the paper, a rectification procedure is developed that models the distortion present in the radar image in terms of the radar sensor's platform parameters and the topographic variations of the imaged scene. This model, the ephemeris data and the digital topographic data are then used in rectifying the radar image. The two techniques are then used in registering and rectifying two examples of radar imagery. Each method is discussed as to its benefits, shortcomings and registration accuracy.

Digital image transformation and rectification of spacecraft and radar images

The application of digital processing techniques to spacecraft television pictures and radar images is discussed. The use of digital rectification to produce contour maps from spacecraft pictures is described; images with azimuth and elevation angles are converted into point-perspective frame pictures. The digital correction of the slant angle of radar images to ground scale is examined. The development of orthophoto and stereoscopic shaded relief maps from digital terrain and digital image data is analyzed. Digital image transformations and rectifications are utilized on Viking Orbiter and Lander pictures of Mars.

Automated rectification and geocoding of SAR imagery

An automated post-processing system has been developed for rectification and geocoding of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) imagery. The system uses as input a raw uncorrected image from the operational SAR correlator, and produces as a standard output a rectified and geocoded product. The accurate geolocation of SAR image pixels is provided by a spatial transformation model which maps the slant range-azimuth SAR image pixels into their location on a prespecified map grid. This model predicts the geodetic location of each pixel by utilizing: the sensor platform position; a geoid model; the parameters of the data collection system and the processing parameters used in the SAR correlator. Based on their geodetic locations, the pixels are mapped by using the desired cartographic projection equations. This rectification and geocoding technique has been tested with Seasat and SIR-B images. The test results demonstrate absolute location uncertainty of less than 50 m and relative distortion (scale factor and skew) of less than 0.1 percent relative to local variations from the assumed geoid.

Wave rectification in plasma sheaths surrounding electric field antennas

Combined measurements of Langmuir or broadband whistler wave intensity and lower-frequency electric field waveforms, all at 10-microsecond time resolution, were made on several recent sounding rockets in the auroral ionosphere. It is found that Langmuir and whistler waves are partically rectified in the plasma sheaths surrounding the payload and the spheres used as antennas. This sheath rectification occurs whenever the high frequency (HF) potential across the sheath becomes of the same order as the electron temperature or higher, for wave frequencies near or above the ion plasma frequency. This rectification can introduce false low-frequency waves into measurements of electric field spectra when strong high-frequency waves are present. Second harmonic signals are also generated, although at much lower levels. The effect occurs in many different plasma conditions, primarily producing false waves at frequencies that are low enough for the antenna coupling to the plasma to be resistive.

Solid-State Ionic Rectification in Perovskite Nanowire Heterostructures

Halide perovskites have attracted increasing research attention with regard to their potential for optoelectronic applications. Because of its low activation energy, ion migration is implicated in the long-term stability and many unusual transport behaviors of halide perovskite devices. However, direct observation and precise control of the ionic transport in halide perovskite crystals remain challenging. Here, we have designed an axial CsPbBr 3 -CsPbCl 3 nanowire heterostructure, in which electric-field-induced halide ion migration was clearly visualized and quantified. We demonstrated that halide ion migration is dependent on the applied electric field and exhibits ionic rectification in this solid-state system, which is due to the nonuniform distribution of the ionic vacancies in the nanowire that results from a competition between electrical screening and their creation/destruction at the electrodes' interfaces. Furthermore, the asymmetric heterostructure characteristics add an additional knob to control the ion movement in the design of advanced ionic circuits with halide perovskites as building blocks.

Suppressing Molecular Charging, Nanochemistry, and Optical Rectification in the Tip-Enhanced Raman Geometry

Classical vs quantum plasmons are operative in tapping vs contact mode tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) and lead to distinct observables. Under otherwise identical experimental conditions, we illustrate the concept through tapping and contact mode TERS mapping of chemically functionalized silver nanocubes. Whereas molecular charging, chemical transformations, and optical rectification are prominent observables in contact mode TERS, the same effects are suppressed using tapping mode feedback. In effect, this work demonstrates that nanoscale physical and chemical processes can be accessed/suppressed on-demand in the TERS geometry. Further, the advantages of tapping mode TERS are otherwise highlighted with the latter in mind.

Electron Spin Polarization and Rectification Driven by Chiral Perylene Diimide-Based Nanodonuts

The chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect allows thin-film layers of chiral conjugated molecules to function as spin filters at ambient temperature. Through solvent-modulated dropcasting of chiral l- and d-perylene diimide (PDI) monomeric building blocks, two types of aggregate morphologies, nanofibers and nanodonuts, may be realized. Spin-diode behavior is evidenced in the nanodonut structures. Stacked PDI units, which form the conjugated core of these nanostructures, dominate the nanodonut–Au electrode contact; in contrast, the AFM tip contacts largely the high-resistance solubilizing alkyl chains of the chiral monomers that form these nanodonuts. Current–voltage responses of the nanodonuts, measured by magnetic conductive AFM (mC-AFM), demonstrate substantial spin polarizations as well as spin current rectification ratios (>10) that exceed the magnitudes of those determined to date for other chiral nanoscale systems. Furthermore, these results underscore the potential for chiral nanostructures, featuring asymmetric molecular junctions, to enable CISS-based nanoscale spin current rectifiers.

Three-dimensional reconstruction of THz near-fields from a LiNbO3 optical rectification source

Terahertz (THz) generation by optical rectification in LiNbO3 (LN) is a widely used technique for generating intense THz radiation. The spatiotemporal characterization of THz pulses from these sources is currently limited to far-field methods. While simulations of tilted pulse front THz generation have been published, little work has been done to measure the near-field properties of the THz source. A better understanding of the THz near-field properties will improve optimization of THz generation efficiency, transport, and coupling. We demonstrate a technique for quantitative spatiotemporal characterization of single-cycle strong-field THz pulses with 2-D near-field electro-optic imaging. We have reconstructed the full temporal 3D THz near-field and shown how the phase front can be tailored by controlling the incident pump pulse.

Digital image processing for the rectification of television camera distortions.

All television systems introduce distortions into the imagery they record which influence the results of quantitative photometric and geometric measurements. Digital computer techniques provide a powerful approach to the calibration and rectification of these systematic effects. Nonlinear as well as linear problems can be attacked with flexibility and precision. Methods which have been developed and applied for the removal of structured system noises and the correction of photometric, geometric, and resolution distortions in vidicon systems are briefly described. Examples are given of results derived primarily from the Mariner Mars 1969 television experiment.
