Tools for induction brazing of stainless steel tubing and fittings
Report contains descriptions of twenty-five tools and tooling advancements developed for industrial and small machine shop adaptation.
Report evaluates commercially-available expert-system-building tools in terms of structures, representations of knowledge, inference mechanisms, interfaces with developers and end users, and capabilities of performing such functions as diagnosis and design. Software tools commercialized derivatives of artificial-intelligence systems developed by researchers at universities and research organizations. Reducing time to develop expert system by order of magnitude compared to that required with such traditional artificial development languages as LISP. Table lists 20 such tools, rating attributes as strong, fair, programmable by user, or having no capability in various criteria.

We present R2U2 (Realizable, Responsive, Unobtrusive Unit), a hardware- supported tool and framework for the continuous monitoring of safetycritical and embedded cyber-physical systems. With the widespread advent of autonomous systems such as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), satellites, rovers, and cars, real-time, on-board decision making requires unobtrusive monitoring of properties for safety, performance, security, and system health. R2U2 models combine past-time and future-time Metric Temporal Logic, “mission time” Linear Temporal Logic, probabilistic reasoning with Bayesian Networks, and modelbased prognostics. The R2U2 monitoring engine can be instantiated as a hardware solution, running on an FPGA, or as a software component. The FPGA realization enables R2U2 to monitor complex cyber-physical systems without any overhead or instrumentation of the flight software. In this tool exhibition report, we present R2U2 and demonstrate applications on system runtime monitoring, diagnostics, software health management, and security monitoring for a UAS. Our tool demonstration uses a hardware-based processor-in-the-loop “iron-bird” configuration.
The Integrated Medical Model (IMM) was designed to forecast relative changes for a specified set of crew health and mission success risk metrics by using a probabilistic (stochastic process) model based on historical data, cohort data, and subject matter expert opinion. A probabilistic approach is taken since exact (deterministic) results would not appropriately reflect the uncertainty in the IMM inputs. Once the IMM was conceptualized, a plan was needed to rigorously assess input information, framework and code, and output results of the IMM, and ensure that end user requests and requirements were considered during all stages of model development and implementation. METHODS: In 2008, the IMM team developed a comprehensive verification and validation (VV) plan, which specified internal and external review criteria encompassing 1) verification of data and IMM structure to ensure proper implementation of the IMM, 2) several validation techniques to confirm that the simulation capability of the IMM appropriately represents occurrences and consequences of medical conditions during space missions, and 3) credibility processes to develop user confidence in the information derived from the IMM. When the NASA-STD-7009 (7009) was published, the IMM team updated their verification, validation, and credibility (VVC) project plan to meet 7009 requirements and include 7009 tools in reporting VVC status of the IMM. RESULTS: IMM VVC updates are compiled recurrently and include 7009 Compliance and Credibility matrices, IMM VV Plan status, and a synopsis of any changes or updates to the IMM during the reporting period. Reporting tools have evolved over the lifetime of the IMM project to better communicate VVC status. This has included refining original 7009 methodology with augmentation from the NASA-STD-7009 Guidance Document. End user requests and requirements are being satisfied as evidenced by ISS Program acceptance of IMM risk forecasts, transition to an operational model and simulation tool, and completion of service requests from a broad end user consortium including Operations, Science and Technology Planning, and Exploration Planning. CONCLUSIONS: The VVC approach established by the IMM project of combining the IMM VV Plan with 7009 requirements is comprehensive and includes the involvement of end users at every stage in IMM evolution. Methods and techniques used to quantify the VVC status of the IMM have not only received approval from the local NASA community but have also garnered recognition by other federal agencies seeking to develop similar guidelines in the medical modeling community.
The Soil Moisture Active/Passive satellite microwave radiometer has been providing measurements of L-band thermal emission from Earth for more than 2 years. SMAP retrieves surface soil moisture from its brightness temperature measurements, and continues to provide science products to the user community. Even though the SMAP radiometer operates in a protected band, its measurements are still corrupted by Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) caused by illegal in-band transmissions or out-of-band emissions. The SMAP radiometer was designed to include special hardware to enable RFI detection and filtering using multiple detection algorithms. Given the good overall performance of SMAP algorithms to detect RFI sources, an automatic tool to report source properties automatically was developed and is now operational. This paper provides a preliminary analysis of the outputs of this reporting tool with a particular focus on the evolution of the RFI environment observed by SMAP during its period of operations.
Tools are now available that enable measurement electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from active electronics in an item. This radiation may be intended WIFI or cellular network links, for example or unintended such as the switching noise generated by DC-to-DC converters. It would be extremely valuable to have the capability to discriminate between the low-voltage DC-to-DC converters or other digital noise prevalent in most modern electronics, versus the high-voltage DC-to-DC converters used in utility firesets. Previous work performed under a Sandia Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project on Charge State Detection using a deep neural network has been continued in this effort. A state-of-the-art supervised machine learning algorithm has not only been extended to discriminate between low and high voltage converters but has been validated in determining a converters make and model.

As part of the Cyclotron Road program, Laminera Inc. worked towards development of atomic layer deposition process customizations and tool modifications to produce synthetic metal films at commercial scale and improve the film quality. Today's state-of-the-art in atomic layer deposited synthetic metal technology is only possible at a research-scale because current tools have practical limitations for scaling industrially and generating high conductivity films. Ultrathin, conformal synthetic metal films have many possible applications such as high surface area nanoporous electrodes for supercapacitors and water desalination devices; protective electrode coatings for electrochemical devices; seed layers for semiconductor device fabrication; or metallic component stabilizing coatings that enable enhanced storage density in next generation hard disk drives. The best synthetic metal conductive and plasmonic properties have been demonstrated using sputtering, which relies on high temperature sputtering with substrate dependent and directional growth limiting usage. This work explored refining process and tool modifications to create ultrathin, conformal, synthetic metal films that can be deposited with high quality over complex three-dimensional surfaces.

NASA's Earth Science Applications Directorate evaluated the potential of NASA remote sensing data and modeling products to enhance the General NOAA Oil Modeling Environment (GNOME) decision support tool. NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R) Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Response Division is interested in enhancing GNOME with near-realtime (NRT) NASA remote sensing products on oceanic winds and ocean circulation. The NASA SeaWinds sea surface wind and Jason-1 sea surface height NRT products have potential, as do sea surface temperature and reflectance products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and sea surface reflectance products from Landsat and the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer. HAZMAT is also interested in the Advanced Circulation model and the Ocean General Circulation Model. Certain issues must be considered, including lack of data continuity, marginal data redundancy, and data formatting problems. Spatial resolution is an issue for near-shore GNOME applications. Additional work will be needed to incorporate NASA inputs into GNOME, including verification and validation of data products, algorithms, models, and NRT data.
The Microsoft Hololens is capable of bi-directional communication between units. This allows many users to share a common visual experience and is the primary capability of interest due to the collaborative scenarios it may enable. One scenario pursued in the Automated Aiming Tool project is shown in figure 1 which conceptualizes the reciprocal workflow between remote team members wearing these devices. In this scenario, the down-range team member leverages the depth-scanning capability of the Hololens to scan and texture map the environment and any objects of interest. This data and any associated metadata are then packaged and transmitted to remote team members where it is then unpackaged and visualized. The remote team member can then insert computer generated imagery – a type of “virtual indicator” – within the visualized environment and that object is then rendered in the field of view of the down-range operator in real time. These virtual objects can be indicators for the placement of instrumentation, items of interest, areas from which data has been collected, etc. Pursuant to the above scenario, the primary objective has been to assess the feasibility of its implementation with current v1 hardware. Certain limitations were found to limit the degree to which the above scenario can currently be implemented. However, the future potential of this approach is clear for revolutionizing the speed and precision of multi-object registration at a single site, instrumentation placement and orientation (aiming), and for full-scene communication and coordination among two or more sites.
This research effort was commissioned to examine factors related to loss of containment due to fire within a glovebox (GB). Tests consisted of multiple trials with varying initial conditions. Global agricultral intelligence is a key element of decision support eithin the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Estimeates of production and yield issued by the USDA for both foreign and domestic agriculture are primary sources of information for policy and management decision making. The USDA monitors the major global agricultural commodities through the Production Estimates and Crop Assessment Division (PECAD) of its Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). Specifically, PECAD iintelligence focuses on global agricultural production and on conditions that affect food security. In conjunction with the USDA, NASA is evaluating the potential for products from NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) missions to add value to PECAD's decision support tools. NASA is usig a systems engineering approach to evaluate the potential enhancement of PECAD's decision support system (DSS)-first by understanding the components of the system and its input requirements, then by recommending NASA products that may be integrated as system inputs to improve the accuracy, quality, or efficiency of the DSS output. This report documents the evaluation phase of the systems engineering process and includes an examination of the system architecture, operations, and input requirements, as well as an initial assessment of specific ESE measurement systems and products that should be considered for their potential to enhance the PECAD DSS.
