Comparative study of bolometric and non-bolometric switching elements for microwave phase shifters

The performance of semiconductor and high critical temperature superconductor switches is compared as they are used in delay-line-type microwave and millimeter-wave phase shifters. Such factors as their ratios of the off-to-on resistances, parasitic reactances, power consumption, speed, input-to-output isolation, ease of fabrication, and physical dimensions are compared. Owing to their almost infinite off-to-on resistance ratio and excellent input-to-output isolation, bolometric superconducting switches appear to be quite suitable for use in microwave phase shifters; their only drawbacks are their speed and size. The SUPERFET, a novel device whose operation is based on the electric field effect in high critical temperature ceramic superconductors is also discussed. Preliminary results indicate that the SUPERFET is fast and that it can be scaled; therefore, it can be fabricated with dimensions comparable to semiconductor field-effect transistors.

Room Temperature Thin Film Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 Ku-Band Coupled MicrostripPhase Shifters: Effects of Film Thickness, Doping, Annealing and Substrate Choice

We report on measurements taken on over twenty Ku-band coupled microstrip phase shifters (CMPS) using thin ferroelectric films of Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3. This CMPS design is a recent innovation designed to take advantage of the high tunability and tolerate the high dielectric constant of ferroelectric films at Ku- and K-band frequencies. These devices are envisioned as a component in low-cost steerable beam phased area antennas, Comparisons are made between devices with differing film thickness, annealed vs unannealed, Mn-doped vs. undoped, and also substrates of LaAlO3 and MgO. A comparison between the CMPS structure and a CPW phase shifter was also made oil the same ferroelectric film.

Slow-Wave Phase Shifters, Based on Thin Ferroelectric Films, for Reflectarray Antennas

We have developed relatively broadband K- and Ka-band phase shifters using synthetic (slow-wave) transmission lines employing coupled microstripline "varactors". The tunable coupled microstripline circuits are based on laser ablated BaSrTiO films on lanthanum aluminate substrates. A model and design criteria for these novel circuits will be presented, along with measured performance including anomalous phase delay characteristics. The critical role of phase shifter loss and transient response in reflectarray antennas will be emphasized.

Implementation of a Frenkel exciton-based controlled phase shifter

Frenkel excitons are of interest for ultrafast switching applications due to the femtosecond timescale at which coherent exciton transfer between chromophores takes place. The Frenkel Hamiltonian, which governs the dynamics of Frenkel excitons, belongs to a class of Hamiltonians that enable universal quantum computation. It is thus of interest to determine how a complete set of exciton-based gates for quantum computing could be constructed as aggregates of chromophores. Here, we demonstrate that a controlled phase shifter can be constructed as a pair of exciton transmission lines that employ two types of chromophores and that are cross coupled by a two-exciton interaction. This element facilitates the construction of controlled basis-change gates, thereby enabling the implementation of a complete set of exciton-based gates for universal quantum computation.

Integrated microwave acousto-optic frequency shifter on thin-film lithium niobate

Electrically driven acousto-optic devices that provide beam deflection and optical frequency shifting have broad applications from pulse synthesis to heterodyne detection. Commercially available acousto-optic modulators are based on bulk materials and consume Watts of radio frequency power. Here, we demonstrate an integrated 3-GHz acousto-optic frequency shifter on thin-film lithium niobate, featuring a carrier suppression over 30 dB. Further, we demonstrate a gigahertz-spaced optical frequency comb featuring more than 200 lines over a 0.6-THz optical bandwidth by recirculating the light in an active frequency shifting loop. Our integrated acousto-optic platform leads to the development of on-chip optical routing, isolation, and microwave signal processing.

Efficient and compact thermo-optic phase shifter in silicon-rich silicon nitride

The design, fabrication, and characterization of low-loss ultra-compact bends in high-index (${n} = {3.1}$ at $\lambda = {1550}\;{\rm nm}$) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRN) were demonstrated and utilized to realize efficient, small footprint thermo-optic phase shifter. Compact bends were structured into a folded waveguide geometry to form a rectangular spiral within an area of ${65} \times {65}\;\unicode{x00B5}{{\rm m}^2}$, having a total active waveguide length of 1.2 mm. The device featured a phase-shifting efficiency of $8\;{\rm mW}/\pi$ and a 3 dB switching bandwidth of 15 KHz. Here, we propose SRN as a promising thermo-optic platform that combines the properties of silicon and stoichiometric silicon nitride.

Continuously variable voltage-controlled phase shifter

Phase shifter circuit adjusts the phase relationship between a locally generated reference frequency and a received RF signal applied to a phase-coherent detector. It is small enough to be integrated into a receiver subassembly and operates on command from remote control panels.

Pulsed Phase Shifter Improves Doppler Radar

Ability of microwave Doppler radar to measure velocity of slow moving nearby target is enhanced by pulsed 90 degrees phase shifter in radar transmission line between circulator and antenna. Because of phase shifting, Doppler frequency is detected as modulation on carrier instead of baseband signal. Carrier is amplified and filtered before demodulation, resulting in strong, clean demodulated Doppler for measurement and display.

Gas scintillation drift chambers with wave shifter read-out for hard X-ray astronomy

A major improvement in hard X-ray and gamma ray astrophysics could be provided by high pressure xenon time projection chambers where gas scintillation is used both for the measurement of the time of interaction and for the detection of the extracted electrons. This allows three dimensional imaging of naturally complex events (photoelectric interaction with escape photon, Compton scatter, and pair production). A novel read-out system based on wave shifter fibers, which is well suited to the high pressures and large areas required of a hard X-ray telescope is proposed. Expected performances are computed, potential problems are outlined, and the experimental effort to solve these problems are described.
