Highly Flexible Dielectric Films from Solution Processable Covalent Organic Frameworks**

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are known to be a promising class of materials for a wide range of applications, yet their poor solution processability limits their utility in many areas. Here we report a pore engineering method using hydrophilic side chains to improve the processability of hydrazone and β-ketoenamine-linked COFs and the production of flexible, crystalline films. Further, mechanical measurements of the free-standing COF films of COF-PEO-3 (hydrazone-linked) and TFP-PEO-3 (β-ketoenamine-linked), revealed a Young's modulus of 391.7 MPa and 1034.7 MPa, respectively. The solubility and excellent mechanical properties enabled the use of these COFs in dielectric devices. Specifically, the TFP-PEO-3 film-based dielectric capacitors display simultaneously high dielectric constant and breakdown strength, resulting in a discharged energy density of 11.22 J cm -3 . This work offers a general approach for producing solution processable COFs and mechanically flexible COF-based films, which hold great potential for use in energy storage and flexible electronics applications.

Understanding slurry formulations to guide solution-processing of solid electrolytes

Scalable processing of thin solid electrolytes is crucial for engineering solid-state batteries with practical energy densities. To leverage existing battery production infrastructure, pathways for solution processing of solid electrolyte films must be investigated. Here, roll-to-roll compatible film preparation of aluminum-doped lithium lanthanum zirconate oxide was studied. Four slurry configurations accounting for different solvent properties and solid loadings were evaluated to investigate the ternary interactions within the dispersions. Rheological and coating stability analyses were carried out on the processed slurries. The analysis and characterization indicated that improved component interactions within the ethanol/toluene system result in homogenized distribution of the particles, binder, and plasticizer, and enable the extraction of free-standing thin films with thicknesses of 20 μm and large area (>15 in. 2 ). The drawbacks and opportunities of several protocols for high temperature sintering of the dried green films were investigated. This study highlights the importance of engineering dispersions during the development of processing protocols for solid electrolytes and provides guidelines for the best practices that can be leveraged for solution processing–based fabrications for a wide range of solid electrolyte materials.

Efficient tandem solar cells with solution-processed perovskite on textured crystalline silicon

Stacking solar cells with decreasing band gaps to form tandems presents the possibility of overcoming the single-junction Shockley-Queisser limit in photovoltaics. The rapid development of solution-processed perovskites has brought perovskite single-junction efficiencies >20%. However, this process has yet to enable monolithic integration with industry-relevant textured crystalline silicon solar cells. We report tandems that combine solution-processed micrometer-thick perovskite top cells with fully textured silicon heterojunction bottom cells. To overcome the charge-collection challenges in micrometer-thick perovskites, we enhanced threefold the depletion width at the bases of silicon pyramids. Moreover, by anchoring a self-limiting passivant (1-butanethiol) on the perovskite surfaces, we enhanced the diffusion length and further suppressed phase segregation. These combined enhancements enabled an independently certified power conversion efficiency of 25.7% for perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells. These devices exhibited negligible performance loss after a 400-hour thermal stability test at 85°C and also after 400 hours under maximum power point tracking at 40°C.

Solution-Processable Polymer Donor-Small Molecule Acceptor Bulk Heterojunction Organocatalysts for Enhancing CO 2 -to-CO Photoconversion

Metal-free organic semiconductors have emerged as a kind of promising star material in photocatalysis. However, their photocatalytic efficacy is impeded by the great recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, we demonstrate the devising of solution-processable organic semiconductor bulk heterojunction (BHJ) systems with varying ratios by using BP3DT and PC 61 BM as the donor (D) and acceptor (A) candidates, respectively, for enhanced selective CO production from CO 2 photoreduction. The prepared BP3DT/PC 61 BM BHJs are solution-processed on both glass substrates (GS) and molecular sieves (MS) via a drop-casting technique to form an active thin film and porous photocatalysts to catalyze CO production. All BP3DT/PC 61 BM BHJs efficiently produce CO as the primary product in the existence of trace-level TEA/H 2 O (0.5 mL). Our results show that the photocatalytic efficiency depended on the D/A w% ratios and its nanoscale phase separation morphology within the BHJ, contributing to the promotion of exciton dissociation. Additionally, the BHJ undergoes an ostensible morphological transition from large-scale phase-separation to a fine mixed homogeneous nanoscale by varying the BP3DT/PC 61 BM blend ratio from 30/70 w% to 70/30 w%, which increases the interfacial area and shortens the distance of the exciton to the D/A surface, and promotes charge carrier separation, corroborated by photo-optical and photoelectrochemical experimental results. Accordingly, the resulting BP3DT/PC 61 BM BHJ@MS with a D/A ratio of 70/30 w% achieves a CO yield of 819 μmol·g cat -1 h -1 , surpassing those of pure PC 61 BM (126 μmol·g cat -1 h -1 ) and BP3DT (72 μmol·g cat -1 h -1 ) by 6.5- to 11.3-fold and also exceeding that of metal-free linear conjugated polymer-based organocatalysts reported to date. Specifically, this is the first work to develop an organic-semiconductor-based BHJ photocatalyst, which may offer a nascent way to design more efficient organocatalysts for CO 2 reduction.

Solution–Processable Thermally Crosslinked Organic Radical Polymer Battery Cathodes

Organic radical polymers are promising cathode materials for next-generation batteries because of their rapid charge transfer and high cycling stability. However, these organic polymer electrodes gradually dissolve in the electrolyte, resulting in capacity fade. Several crosslinking methods have been developed to improve the performance of these electrodes, but they are either not compatible with carbon additives or compromise the solution processability of the electrodes. A one-step post-synthetic, carbon-compatible crosslinking method was developed to effectively crosslink an organic polymer electrode and allow for easy solution processing. The highest electrode capacity of 104 mAh g –1 (vs. a theoretical capacity of 111 mAh g –1 ) is achieved by introducing 1 mol % of the crosslinker, whereas the highest capacity retention (99.6 %) is obtained with 3 mol % crosslinker. In addition, mass transfer was observed in situ by using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. Furthermore, these results may guide future electrode design toward fast-charging and high-capacity organic electrodes.

Manipulation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in conjugated pseudoladder polymer for semiconductivity and solution-processability

The conformational coplanarity and local rigidity of π-conjugated backbones are critical for the semiconducting performance of organic electronic materials. The conformational coplanarity and local rigidity of π-conjugated backbones are critical for the semiconducting performance of organic electronic materials. While fusing the aromatic system into a ladder-type structure effectively enhances these properties, it also often results in poor solution processability and hence limits their transition to device application. To address this challenge, an intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded pseudoladder polymer (HPLP) system based on alternating hydrogen bond donating benzobisimidazole (BBI) and hydrogen bond accepting benzodifuran (BDF) units, is designed and synthesized. A Boc-protected precursor of HPLP allows for feasible solution processing of the polymer into thin films. Subsequently, in situ thermal Boc-deprotection generates the HPLP polymer, in which intramolecular hydrogen bonds form between each pair of neighboring repeating units, inducing coplanarity and rigidity throughout the entire backbone. This process is accompanied by a significant red-shift of the absorption spectrum, reduced bandgap, and enhanced rigidity, as confirmed by NMR, UV-Vis, and density functional theory analyses. HPLP films exhibit a three-order-of-magnitude enhancement in charge carrier mobility compared to the Boc-protected precursor and demonstrate excellent solvent resistance in organic thin-film transistors.

Highly Emissive Semi-Ladder-Type Copolymers, Aggregation State, and Solution-Processed Organic Light-Emitting Transistor

An organic light-emitting transistor (OLET) integrates the logic function of a field-effect transistor (FET) with electroluminescence of a light-emitting diode (LED) into a single device. This has the potential to play an important role in smart displays, electrically pumped organic laser, and other flexible electronic devices. For achieving high-performance solution-processed OLET, three semiladder copolymers—TPTI-CC, TPTI-C, and TPTI-F—were developed in this study. It was found that variation in the chemical structure lead to significant differences in energy level, emission color, and intermolecular aggregation. High photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) was obtained in these three polymers. Solution-processed trilayered OLET devices were fabricated, which exhibited strong electroluminescence, balanced charge mobility, and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.8%.

Optoelectronic and material properties of solution-processed Earth-abundant Cu 2 BaSn(S, Se) 4 films for solar cell applications

Copper barium thioselenostannate, Cu 2 BaSnS 4-x Se x (CBTSSe), absorbers employ low-toxicity and abundant metals while offering low-cost manufacturing options, controllable stoichiometry and band gap tunability (from 2 eV at x = 0 to 1.55 eV at x = 3). CBTSSe can therefore be considered a prospective candidate for maintaining or improving upon the advantages of already commercialized Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 (CIGSSe) and CdTe absorbers. Here, we focus on solution-deposited stoichiometric CBTSSe films with band gap of 1.59 eV (x ≈ 3) and explore the fundamental film properties. Temperature- and excitation-dependent photoluminescence studies reveal a dominant defect emission at ~1.5 eV and a second deep defect feature at 1.15 eV. From time-resolved terahertz measurements, we find a charge carrier (electron and hole sum) mobility of ~140 cm 2 /Vs—i.e., comparable to values in CIGSSe or Cu 2 ZnSnS 4-x Se x (CZTSSe)—as well as a two-component minority carrier lifetime. A longer-lived lifetime component (~2 ns) arises from bulk recombination. However, strong recombination at the (bare) surface leads to a ~50 ps lifetime, inferior to state-of-the-art CIGSSe or CZTSSe absorbers. This recombination issue may worsen for CBTSSe/CdS interfaces, due to a cliff-like band alignment with 0.6 eV band offset, as revealed by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. A low number of charge carriers within the absorber further contributes to a high series resistance. Employing these films, we also report the highest performance achieved from solution-processed trigonal CBTSSe thin-film photovoltaic devices, with open circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, fill factor and efficiency of 470 mV, 14.3 mA/cm 2 , 43.6% and 2.9%, respectively. The physical measurements provided on the stoichiometric solution-processed CBTSSe absorber further point to critical areas for future improvement of CBTSSe and related photovoltaic cells in the quest for higher efficiency devices based on earth abundant metals.

Solution-processable copper(I) iodide-based inorganic-organic hybrid semiconductors composed of both coordinate and ionic bonds

Three new one-dimensional (1D) All-In-One (AIO) type CuI-based hybrid semiconductors with both dative and ionic bonds between the inorganic and organic components have been successfully designed and synthesized by using the ligands containing both cationic center and coordination available sites. Structural analysis confirms that all compounds share the same formula of Cu 4 I 6 (L) 2 (L = ligand) and are composed of 1D-Cu 4 I 6 2- anionic chains that coordinate to cationic ligands. Additionally, these materials demonstrate high stability towards heat and moisture and excellent solution processability due to their unique bonding nature. They emit low energy light ranging from green to orange color (530-590 nm). The origin and mechanism of their emissions were studied by both experimental and theoretical methods. More importantly, all compounds can be easily fabricated into films by solution process, a desired but rare feature for most of CuI-based hybrids built of extended networks.

Experimental and theoretical evidence for hydrogen doping in polymer solution-processed indium gallium oxide

The field-effect electron mobility of aqueous solution-processed indium gallium oxide (IGO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) is significantly enhanced by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) addition to the precursor solution, a >70-fold increase to 7.9 cm 2 /Vs. To understand the origin of this remarkable phenomenon, microstructure, electronic structure, and charge transport of IGO:PVA film are investigated by a battery of experimental and theoretical techniques, including In K-edge and Ga K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS); resonant soft X-ray scattering (R-SoXS); ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS); Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy; time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS); composition-/processing-dependent TFT properties; high-resolution solid-state 1 H, 71 Ga, and 115 In NMR spectroscopy; and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) analysis with ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) liquid-quench simulations. The 71 Ga{ 1 H} rotational-echo double-resonance (REDOR) NMR and other data indicate that PVA achieves optimal H doping with a Ga···H distance of ~3.4 Å and conversion from six- to four-coordinate Ga, which together suppress deep trap defect localization. This reduces metal-oxide polyhedral distortion, thereby increasing the electron mobility. Finally, hydroxyl polymer doping thus offers a pathway for efficient H doping in green solvent-processed metal oxide films and the promise of high-performance, ultra-stable metal oxide semiconductor electronics with simple binary compositions.

Autonomous platform for solution processing of electronic polymers

The manipulation of electronic polymers’ solid-state properties through processing is crucial in electronics and energy research. Yet, efficiently processing electronic polymer solutions into thin films with specific properties remains a formidable challenge. We introduce Polybot, an artificial intelligence (AI) driven automated material laboratory designed to autonomously explore processing pathways for achieving high-conductivity, low-defect electronic polymers films. Leveraging importance-guided Bayesian optimization, Polybot efficiently navigates a complex 7-dimensional processing space. In particular, the automated workflow and algorithms effectively explore the search space, mitigate biases, employ statistical methods to ensure data repeatability, and concurrently optimize multiple objectives with precision. The experimental campaign yields scale-up fabrication recipes, producing transparent conductive thin films with averaged conductivity exceeding 4500 S/cm. Feature importance analysis and morphological characterizations reveal key design factors. This work signifies a significant step towards transforming the manufacturing of electronic polymers, highlighting the potential of AI-driven automation in material science.

Irradiated light water reactor (LWR) fuel contains material which is insoluble in nitric acid, and process solutions are unstable with respect to precipitation of compounds insoluble in nitric acid. Accordingly, solids will be encountered during fuel reprocessing, and operations must be conducted in a way to minimize formation of additional solids and to prevent their interference with reprocessing operations.

Epitaxially Grown Single-Crystalline SrTiO 3 Membranes Using a Solution-Processed, Amorphous SrCa 2 Al 2 O 6 Sacrificial Layer

Water-soluble sacrificial layers based on epitaxially-grown, single crystalline (Ca, Sr, Ba) 3 Al 2 O 6 layer are widely used for creating free-standing perovskite oxide membranes. However, obtaining these sacrificial layers with intricate stoichiometry remains a challenge, especially for molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). In this study, we demonstrate the hybrid MBE growth of epitaxial, single crystalline SrTiO 3 films using a solution processed, amorphous SrCa 2 Al 2 O 6 sacrificial layer onto SrTiO 3 (001) substrates. Prior to the growth, the oxygen plasma exposure was used to first create the crystalline SrCa 2 Al 2 O 6 layer with well-defined surface crystallinity. Utilizing reflection high energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy, we observe an atomic layer-by-layer growth of epitaxial, single crystalline SrTiO 3 film on the SrCa 2 Al 2 O 6 layer with atomically smooth surfaces. The SrCa 2 Al 2 O6 layer was subsequently dissolved in de-ionized water to create free-standing SrTiO3 membranes that were transferred onto a metal-coated Si wafer. Membranes created with Sr-deficiency revealed ferroelectric-like behavior measured using piezo force microscopy whereas stoichiometric films remained paraelectric-like. Furthermore, these findings underscore the viability of using ex-situ deposited amorphous SrCa2Al2O6 for epitaxial, single crystalline growth, as well as the importance of point defects in determining the ferroic properties in membranes.

A Solution-Processable High-Modulus Crystalline Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Practical Lithium Metal Batteries

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) has been identified as a key challenge for Li metal anodes. The brittle and inhomogeneous native SEI generated by parasitic reactions between Li and liquid electrolytes can devastate battery performance; therefore, artificial SEIs (ASEIs) have been proposed as an effective strategy to replace native SEIs. Herein, as a collaboration between academia and industrial R&D teams, a multifunctional (crystalline, high modulus, and robust, Li + ion conductive, electrolyte-blocking, and solution processable) ASEI material, LiAl-FBD (where “FBD” refers to 2,2,3,3-tetra-fluoro-1,4-butanediol), for improving Li metal battery performance is designed and synthesized. The LiAl-FBD crystal structure consists of Al 3+ ions bridged by FBD 2– ligands to form anion clusters while Li + ions are loosely bound at the periphery, enabling an Li + ion conductivity of 9.4 × 10 –6 S cm –1 . Further, the fluorinated, short ligands endow LiAl-FBD with electrolyte phobicity and high modulus. The ASEI is found to prevent side reactions and extend the cycle life of Li metal electrodes. Specifically, pairing LiAl-FBD coated 50 μm thick Li with industrial 3.5 mAh cm –2 NMC811 cathode and 2.8 μL mAh –1 lean elec-trolyte, the Li metal full cells show superior cycle life compared to bare ones, achieving 250 cycles at 1 mA cm –2 .

n-Type doping of a solution processed p-type semiconductor using isoelectronic surface dopants for homojunction fabrication

The p-n junction is one of the fundamental requirements for a practical semiconductor-based electronic device. Designing a heterojunction comprising of dissimilar p-type and n-type semiconductors calls for careful energy level considerations, both when selecting the semiconductor materials as well as the metal contacts. A homojunction based on a single semiconductor simplifies this task, as energy levels of the p-type and n-type materials are already fairly similar, allowing for easier selection of contacts. Traditionally, homojunctions rely on doping of a bulk semiconductor to achieve p- and n-type transport through controlled addition of aliovalent dopants via energy-intensive processes such as ion implantation or thermal annealing. Exact control of doping in nanocrystalline semiconductors is significantly more challenging, due to self-purification effects. However, owing to their large surface areas, surface moieties can be utilized to both dope the nanostructures as well as tune their energy levels. Here, we present a facile technique based on an isoelectronic surface dopant in order to achieve p- and n-type materials based on the same semiconductor. We show that thin p-type colloidal Bi 2 Te 3 nanowires can be switched to n-type through surface functionalization, thus increasing the availability of new nanocrystalline solution-processable p-n homojunctions.
