Ground state properties of solid and liquid spin-aligned atomic hydrogen

Calculations of the ground state energy in the solid phase were performed with the aid of a variational approach. The Morse potential form of the atomic triple potential computed by Kolos and Wolniewicz (1965) was employed for the calculations. The ground state energies of both the liquid and solid phases of spin-aligned atomic hydrogen around the volume of the transition are presented in a graph.

Stabilization of He2(A(sup 3)Sigma(sub u)(+)) molecules in liquid helium by optical pumping for vacuum UV laser

A technique is disclosed for achieving large populations of metastable spin-aligned He2(a 3 Sigma u +) molecules in superfluid helium to obtain lasing in the vacuum ultraviolet wavelength regime around 0.0800 micron m by electronically exciting liquid (superfluid) helium with a comparatively low-current electron beam and spin aligning the metastable molecules by means of optical pumping with a modestly-powered (100mW) circularly-polarized continuous wave laser operating at, for example, 0.9096 or 0.4650 micron m. Once a high concentration of spin-aligned He2 (a 3 Sigma u +) is achieved with lifetimes of a few milliseconds, a strong microwave signal destroys the spin alignment and induces a quick collisional transition of He2 (a 3 Sigma u +) molecules to the a 1 Sigma u + state and thereby a lasing transition to the X 1 Sigma g + state.

Heteronuclear transition metal diatomics - The bonding and electronic structure of ScNi, YNi, ScPd, and YPd

High quality ab initio calculations show that ScNi, YNi, ScPd, and YPd all have 2Sigma(+) ground states in agreement with electron spin resonance experiments. For ScNi and YNi, this is expected based on the lowest atomic asymptote. For ScPd and YPd, the lowest atomic asymptote would give the order of stability 2Delta greater than 2Pi equal to about 2Sigma(+), but the calculations show that mixing in of the excited asymptotes preferentially lowers the 2Sigma(+) state. The calculations show that the quartet states are about 20-30 kcal/mol above the ground state, and therefore probably do not contribute significantly to the unexpected g(vertical) values found in experiment. Calculations of excited states for YPd reveal some strong transitions that should be amenable to spectroscopic studies.

Spectral and Timing Nature of the Symbiotic X-Ray Binary 4U 1954+319: The Slowest Rotating Neutron Star in AN X-Ray Binary System

The symbiotic X-ray binary (SyXB) 4U 1954+319 is a rare system hosting a peculiar neutron star (NS) and an M-type optical companion. Its approx. 5.4 hr NS spin period is the longest among all known accretion-powered pulsars and exhibited large (is approx. 7%) fluctuations over 8 yr. A spin trend transition was detected with Swift/BAT around an X-ray brightening in 2012. The source was in quiescent and bright states before and after this outburst based on 60 ks Suzaku observations in 2011 and 2012. The observed continuum is well described by a Comptonized model with the addition of a narrow 6.4 keV Fe-K alpha line during the outburst. Spectral similarities to slowly rotating pulsars in high-mass X-ray binaries, its high pulsed fraction (approx. 60%-80%), and the location in the Corbet diagram favor high B-field (approx. greater than 10(exp12) G) over a weak field as in low-mass X-ray binaries. The observed low X-ray luminosity (10(exp33)-10(exp35) erg s(exp−1)), probable wide orbit, and a slow stellar wind of this SyXB make quasi-spherical accretion in the subsonic settling regime a plausible model. Assuming a approx. 10(exp13) G NS, this scheme can explain the approx. 5.4 hr equilibrium rotation without employing the magnetar-like field (approx. 10(exp16) G) required in the disk accretion case. The timescales of multiple irregular flares (approx. 50 s) can also be attributed to the free-fall time from the Alfv´en shell for a approx. 10(exp13) G field. A physical interpretation of SyXBs beyond the canonical binary classifications is discussed.

Dissociation of O(2-)2 defects into paramagnetic O(-) in wide band-gap insulators - A magnetic susceptibility study of magnesium oxide

The magnetic susceptibility of single-crystal MgO has been measured in the temperature range 300-1000 K, using a Faraday balance. The high-purity crystal (less than 100 ppm transition metals), grown from the melt in a H2O-containing atmosphere, was found to be paramagnetic due to the presence of defects on the O(2-) sublattice. The defects derive from OH(-) introduced into the MgO matrix by the dissolution of traces of H2O during crystal growth. The OH(-) converts into O(2-)2 and H2. Each O(2-)2 represents two coupled, spin-paired O(-) states. The observed strongly temperature-dependent paramagnetism can be described by three contributions that overlay the intrinsic diamagnetism of MgO and arise from the low level of transition-metal impurities, O(-) generated by 0(2-)2 dissociation, and O(-) states trapped by quenching from high temperatures from previous experiments.

On the origin of Hawking mini black-holes and the cold early universe

A simple argument is outlined leading to the result that the mass of mini black holes exploding today is 10 to the 15th power g. A mathematical model is discussed which indicates that the equation of state is greatly softened in the high-density regime and a phase transition may exist, such that any length (particularly very small sizes) will grow with time irrespective of its relation to the size of the particle horizon. It is shown that the effect of spin-2 mesons with respect to the equation of state is to soften the pressure and make it negative. An analytical expression is given for the probability that any particular region in a hot early universe will evolve into a black hole.

Theoretical studies of the transition metal-carbonyl systems MCO and M(CO)2, M = Ti, Sc, and V

Large Gaussian basis sets and an electron correlation treatment are used in ab initio calculations on the transition metal-carbonyl systems MCO and N(CO)2 for M = Ti, Sc, and V. The results show that high-spin ground states are favored for the monocarbonyl molecules, and that for the dicarbonyl molecules there is a competition between high, intermediate, and low spin states which are very close in energy. Dissociation energies of 0.62 eV for Ti-CO and 1.02 for Ti(CO)2 are found, relative to the ground state Ti atomic asymptote and CO 1Sigma(+). The binding energy per carbonyl for the three metal atoms is shown to be significantly lower for the dicarbonyl than for the the monocarbonyl molecules.

Detection of MgCn in IRC + 10216: A new metal-bearing free radical

A new metal-containing molecule, MgCN, has been detected toward the late-type star IRC + 10216, using the NRAO 12 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes. The N = 11 approaches 10, 10 approaches 9, and 9 approaches 8 transtions of this species which has a (sup 2)Sigma(sup +) ground state, have been observed in the outer envelope of this object at 3 mm. For the N = 11 approaches 10 transitions, the two spin-rotation components are clearly resolved and conclusively identify this new radical. These measurements imply a column of density for MgCN of N(sub tot) approximately 10(exp 12)/sq cm in the outer shell, which corresponds to a fractional abundance of f approximately 7x10(exp -10). This molecule, the metastable isomer of MgNC, is the third metal-bearing species thus far identified in the outer shell of IRC + 10216, and its detection implies a ratio of MgNC/MgCN approximately 22/1. MgCN may be formed through a reaction scheme involving magnesium and HNC or CN, both prominent outer shell molecules, or through synthesis on grains.

Semiclassical dynamics on multiple electronic surfaces - Three-dimensional treatment of reactive F + H2

The role of electron transitions in collisions is studied for the F + H2 reaction by combining quasi-classical Monte Carlo trajectories with a semiclassical decoupling approximation for the electron transitions. Attention is directed at the reaction of excited state F atoms reacting to form ground state products; the reactants are initiated in either of two spin-orbit states of the atom with the diatom in the ground vibrational state and the lowest four rotational states, at relative translational energies of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 eV. Even if the reactants are initiated on the excited state surface, the reactive cross sections (which are classically forbidden) are significant. The major dynamical effects of the excited state reaction are the flow of reactant electronic energy into product internal energy.

Isothermal-desorption-rate measurements in the vicinity of the Curie temperature for H2 chemisorbed on nickel films

Measurements of the isothermal desorption rate of H2 chemisorbed onto polycrystalline nickel films made for temperatures spanning the Curie temperature of the nickel film are presented. Desorption kinetics were followed by measuring the decay of the change in resistance of the nickel film brought about by hydrogen chemisorption after gas-phase H2 had been rapidly evacuated. The desorption rate is found to undergo an anomalous decrease in the vicinity of the Curie temperature, accompanied by an increase in the desorption activation energy and the equilibrium constant for the chemisorbed hydrogen. The results are interpreted in terms of anomalous variations in rate constants for the formation of the precursor molecular adsorbed state and the chemisorbed atomic state due to the phase transition in the nickel. The changes in rate constants are also considered to be in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions based on a spin coupling between the adatom and the magnetic substrate.

Spin glass freezing and superconductivity in YBa2(Cu(1-x)Fe(x))3O7 alloys

The dynamics were studied of the iron spins in superconducting YBa2(Cu(0.94)Fe(0.06))3O7 by neutron time of flight measurements. Two samples were studied with slightly different characteristics, as shown by resistivity and neutron diffraction measurements. The same dynamical anomalies are observed by neutrons in both samples. Differences appear qualitative but not quantitative. In the whole temperature range, the q-dependence of the magnetic intensity mainly reflects the magnetic form factor of iron which shows that the iron spins are almost uncorrelated. The elastic and quasielastic intensities strongly vary with temperature. A spin glass like freezing is revealed at low temperature by a sharp decrease of the quasielastic intensity, an increase of the 'elastic' or resolution limited intensity and a minimum in the quasielastic width. The freezing temperature (T sub f - 18 K) corresponds to that already determined by a magnetic splitting in Mossbauer experiments. Above T sub f, the relaxation of the iron spins in the paramagnetic state is modified by the occurrence of superconductivity. An increase was observed of the quasielastic intensity and of the quasielastic width at the superconducting transition.

A Laboratory and Theoretical Study of Silicon Hydroxide SiOH

The rotational spectrum of the triatomic free radical SiOH in its X 2A' ground electronic state has been observed in a supersonic molecular beam by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The fundamental (10,1 yields 00,0) transition has been detected for normal SiOH and for three rare isotopic species: (30)SiOH, Si(18)OH, and SiOD. The same transition has also been observed in two of three excited vibrational states, v2 and v3, for the most abundant species. Precise spectroscopic constants, including those that describe the effective spin doubling and hydrogen hyperfine structure, have been derived for each isotopic species or vibrational state. To complement the laboratory work, theoretical calculations of the structure, dipole moment, and energies of the X 2A' and low-lying 1 2A'' states have also been undertaken at the coupled cluster level of theory. In agreement with theoretical predictions, we conclude from the hyperfine constants that SiOH is a best described as a pi-type radical, with the unpaired electron localized on a p orbital on the silicon atom. Assuming a bond angle of 118.5 deg, the Si-O bond length is 1.647(2) Angstroms and the O-H bond length is 0.969(4) Angstrom.

The millimeter-wave spectrum of the CaF radical (X(sup 2)Sigma(+))

The pure rotational spectrum of the CaF radical has been measured in the laboratory using millimeter/sub-mm direct absorption spectroscopy. Fourteen rotational transitions have been detected originating in the v = 0 mode of the species. Rotational lines of the vibrationally excited v = 1, 2, and 3 states have also been observed. Spin-rotation splittings, as well as hyperfine interactions arising from the nuclear spin of the fluorine atom, were resolved in the CaF spectra. Rotational, fine-structure, and in some cases, hyperfine parameters were determined for the various vibrational modes of the molecule from a nonlinear least-squares fit to the data, using a (sup 2)Sigma Hamiltonian, and are in agreement with past measurements. The newly measured rest frequencies for CaF, which are accurate to at least + or - 100 kHz, will enable astronomical searches to be conducted for the molecule in interstellar and circumstellar gas. Given the recent detection of AlF in IRC + 10216, metal fluoride species may be more abundant than previously thought.

Angular dependence of electron impact excitation cross sections of O2.

Study of the electron-impact excitation spectrum of O2 at 20 and 45 eV impact energies and at scattering angles ranging from 10 to 90 deg. The angular behavior of the differential scattering cross sections for excitation of the a super 1 delta sub g, b super 1 sigma sub g (+), B super 3 sigma sub u (-) states for the 9.97-eV ('longest' band) and the 10.29-eV ('second' band) transitions, for the broad feature at 6.1 eV energy-loss, and for elastic scattering is determined. The experimentally measured relative differential and integral cross sections for these processes are approximately normalized to the absolute scale. The intensities of the different transitions in optical and electron-impact spectra are compared, and the importance of spin-orbit coupling and exchange processes is discussed. It is found that the energy-loss feature at 6.1 eV in the electron-impact spectrum is mostly due to the excitation of the c super 1 sigma sub u (-) state, and not the A super 3 sigma sub u (+) state, as had been previously thought.

The far-infrared laser magnetic resonance spectrum of the SiH radical and determination of ground state parameters

The far-infrared laser magnetic resonance spectrum of the SiH radical in the v = O level of its X2Pi state has been recorded. The signals are rather weak. The molecules were generated in the reaction between fluorine atoms and SiH4. Rotational transitions have been detected in both 2Pi1/2 and 2Pi3/2 spin components but no fine structure transitions between the spin components were observed. Proton hyperfine splittings were resolved on some lines. The measurements have been analyzed, subjected to a least-squares fit using an effective Hamiltonian, and the appropriate molecular parameters determined. The weakness of the spectrum and the failure of attempts to power saturate favorable lines are both consistent with a small value for the electric dipole moment for SiH.

The millimeter and submillimeter rotational spectrum of the MgCN radical (X (sup 2) Sigma(+))

The pure rotational spectrum of the MgCN radical has been recorded in the laboratory using millimeter/submillimeter direct absorption spectroscopy. Twenty-seven rotational transitions of the species were observed in the range 101-376 GHz and indicate that the molecule is linear with a (sup 2)Sigma(+) ground electronic state, as predicted by theory. Spin rotation interactions were resolved in the spectra, but no hyperfine splittings were observed, which would originate with the nitrogen nuclear spin. The rotational and fine-structure constants were determined for this radical from a nonlinear least-squares fit to the data using a (sup 2)Sigma Hamiltonian. MgCN is of astrophysical interest because it is the metastable isomer of MgNC, which recently has been detected toward IRC +10216
