High-Endurance Magneto-Electronic Switchable Molecular Electronic Crystal

Electrically switchable magnetic and electronic properties are promising for quantum sensing and information technology. Here, we report an electrically driven magnetic and electronic phase transition in molecular electronic crystal, potassium-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethan, with the magneto-electric switching over 105 cycles at room temperature. Electron spin resonance study reveals the cooperative transition between spin and charge degrees of freedom. In addition, the mechanistic spectroscopy studies suggest the charges in an inhomogeneous conductor–insulator mixed state. Furthermore, the findings shown here suggest electrically controlled ordering in strongly correlated molecular crystal leads to dynamic magneto-electric switching, paving the way for developing molecular-based memory and switching devices.

Robust Biaxial Anisotropy and Switchable Néel Vectors in LaFeO 3 Epitaxial Films

Antiferromagnets with highly stable but switchable Néel vectors are desired for antiferromagnetic spintronics with ultrafast speed and terahertz frequencies. Electrical switching of antiferromagnetic insulators has been demonstrated using binary antiferromagnets, while large families of complex antiferromagnets such as perovskites are largely unexplored. Here, we show that epitaxial LaFeO 3 thin films on SrTiO 3 (001) exhibit clear, robust biaxial anisotropy with a spin-flop field of a few tesla. Angular-dependent spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) characterizations of Pt/LaFeO 3 bilayers with the current channel along SrTiO 3 [100] and [110] reveal distinct, intriguing shapes and field dependence. Simulations using a macrospin model accurately describe the main behavior and fine features of the SMR data from which key antiferromagnetic parameters are extracted. Furthermore, remanent SMR measurement confirms the high fidelity of the Néel vector along either easy axis of the biaxial anisotropy, indicating that epitaxial films of LaFeO 3 and potentially other perovskite antiferromagnets offer an attractive platform for antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Switchable wetting of oxygen-evolving oxide catalysts

The surface wettability of catalysts is typically controlled via surface treatments that promote catalytic performance. Here we report on potential-regulated hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity at cobalt-based oxide interfaces with an alkaline solution. The switchable wetting of single particles, directly related to their activity and stability towards the oxygen evolution reaction, was revealed by electrochemical liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy. Analysis of the movement of the liquid in real time revealed distinctive wettability behaviour associated with specific potential ranges. At low potentials, an overall reduction of the hydrophobicity of the oxides was probed. Upon reversible reconstruction towards the surface oxyhydroxide phase, electrowetting was found to cause a change in the interfacial capacitance. At high potentials, the evolution of molecular oxygen, confirmed by operando electron energy-loss spectroscopy, was accompanied by a globally thinner liquid layer. This work directly links the physical wetting with the chemical oxygen evolution reaction of single particles, providing fundamental insights into solid–liquid interfacial interactions of oxygen-evolving oxides.

Switchable resolution in soft x-ray tomography of single cells

The diversity of living cells, in both size and internal complexity, calls for imaging methods with adaptable spatial resolution. Soft x-ray tomography (SXT) is a three-dimensional imaging technique ideally suited to visualizing and quantifying the internal organization of single cells of varying sizes in a near-native state. The achievable resolution of the soft x-ray microscope is largely determined by the objective lens, but switching between objectives is extremely time-consuming and typically undertaken only during microscope maintenance procedures. Since the resolution of the optic is inversely proportional to the depth of focus, an optic capable of imaging the thickest cells is routinely selected. This unnecessarily limits the achievable resolution in smaller cells and eliminates the ability to obtain high-resolution images of regions of interest in larger cells. Here, we describe developments to overcome this shortfall and allow selection of microscope optics best suited to the specimen characteristics and data requirements. We demonstrate that switchable objective capability advances the flexibility of SXT to enable imaging cells ranging in size from bacteria to yeast and mammalian cells without physically modifying the microscope, and we demonstrate the use of this technology to image the same specimen with both optics.

Metallic d-wave altermagnetism in WFeB: a platform for electrically switchable perpendicular spin-splitter response

We report the synthesis and magnetic characterization of WFeB and identify it as a metallic d-wave altermagnet representative of a broader TiNiSi-type family. Neutron diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and magnetometry establish a collinear altermagnetic ordering confirmed by first-principles calculations. The electronic structure shows a nonrelativistic spin splitting of approximately 100 meV, but it also supports a strong spin-splitter transport response. This demonstrates that efficient spin-current generation can occur even with such modest band splitting. Symmetry analysis shows that selected film orientations permit deterministic switching of the Néel vector by current-induced staggered torques, enabling electrical control of a perpendicular spin-splitter response. These results establish WFeB and related TiNiSi-type antiferromagnets as a platform for electrically switchable charge-to-spin conversion driven by altermagnetic symmetry.

Dish antenna having switchable beamwidth

A switchable beamwidth antenna includes a concave parabolic main reflecting dish which has a central circular region and a surrounding coaxial annular region. A feed means selectively excites only the central region of the main dish via a truncated subreflector for wide beamwidth or substantially the entire main dish for narrow beamwidth. In one embodiment, the feed means comprises a truncated concave ellipsoid subreflector and separate feed terminations located at two foci of the ellipsoid. One feed termination directly views all of the main dish while the other feed termination, exciting the main dish via the subreflector, excites only the central region because of the subreflector truncation. In the another embodiment, the feed means comprises one feed termination and a convex hyperboloid subreflector via which the feed excites the main dish.

Switchable Beamwidth Monopulse Method and System

A switchable beamwidth monopulse method and system are described. An antenna comprising a curved reflector and a first set of monopulse feeds positioned in the effective region of the airy disc of the antenna includes a second set of monopulse feeds. The second set of monopulse feeds is positioned outside the airy disc in the region of first bright airy ring. In narrow beamwidth monopulse operation, monopulse sum and difference channel patterns are obtained from the first set of feeds within the airy disc. In wide beamwidth monopulse operation, the difference channel pattern is obtained from the second set of feeds in the airy ring; the sum channel pattern is obtained by attenuation and phase shifting the sum channel signal obtained from the first set of feeds, and adding the resultant to the sum channel signal obtained from the second set of feeds. In a simplified form of the invention, the difference channel patterns for both narrow and wide beamwidth mode operation are obtained from the second set of feeds, while the sum channel patterns are obtained as described above.

Switchable Wettability for Condensation Heat Transfer

Condensation proceeds as dropwise or filmwise depending on the wettability of the condensing surface. These two modes of condensation have disparate heat transfer coefficients, with dropwise often exceeding filmwise. This work reports a surface with switchable superhydrophilic to hydrophobic wetting behavior that can exhibit both modes of condensation. Relative to the highly-wetting state which yields filmwise condensation, the non-wetting state exhibits dropwise condensation and twice the heat transfer coefficient. Relevance to thermal management is additionally discussed.

pH-SWITCHABLE DYNAMIC BINARY COMPLEXES AS VISCOSITY MODIFYING AGENTS

The study of supramolecular structures has been gaining a lot of momentum in recent years due to their potential application in several interesting areas such as medicine, catalysis, energy, oil and gas, etc. Hydraulic fracturing is one area where the ongoing demand for novel viscosity modifiers has prompted researchers to explore various facets of chemistry. In this study, a dynamic binary complex (DBC) solution is presented, with the potential to be useful in the hydraulic fracturing domain. It has a supramolecular structure that is formed by the self-assembly of oleic acid and diethylenetriamine into an elongated network under alkaline conditions. With less than 2 wt% of constituents in aqueous solution, a viscous gel that exhibits high viscosities even under shear was formed. It was sensitive to pH and salinity, and its zero-shear viscosity could be tuned by a factor of ~280 by changing the pH. Furthermore, its viscous properties were pronounced in the presence of salt. Sand settling tests revealed its potential to hold up sand particles for extended periods of time, longer than 24 hours. In conclusion, this DBC solution system has potential to be utilized as a smart pH-switchable hydraulic fracturing fluid that can be prepared using seawater.

Visible-Light-Enhanced Cobalt-Catalyzed Hydrogenation: Switchable Catalysis Enabled by Divergence between Thermal and Photochemical Pathways

The catalytic hydrogenation activity of the readily-prepared, coordinatively saturated cobalt(I) precatalyst, (R,R)-( iPr DuPhos)Co(CO) 2 H ((R,R)- iPr DuPhos = (+)-1,2-bis[(2R,5R)-2,5-diisopropylphospholano]benzene) is described. While efficient turnover was observed with a range of alkenes upon heating to 100 ºC, the catalytic performance of the cobalt catalyst was markedly enhanced upon irradiation with blue light at 35 °C. Here, this improved reactivity enabled hydrogenation of terminal, di- and trisubstituted alkenes, alkynes, and carbonyl compounds. A combination of deuterium labeling studies, hydrogenation of alkenes containing radical clocks and experiments probing relative rates support a hydrogen atom transfer pathway under thermal conditions that is enabled by a relatively weak cobalt–hydrogen bond of 56 kcal/mol. In contrast, data for the photocatalytic reactions support light-induced dissociation of a carbonyl ligand followed by a coordination-insertion sequence where the product is released by combination of a cobalt alkyl intermediate with the starting hy-dride, (R,R)-( iPr DuPhos)Co(CO) 2 H. These results demonstrate the versatility with catalysis with Earth-abundant metals as pathways involving open- versus closed-shell intermediates can be switched by the energy source.

Design of a Stable Heusler Alloy with Switchable Metal-to-Half-Metal Transition at Finite Temperature

We report the electronic structure and metallicity of Si-doped Mn2VGe Heusler alloys within the first-principles density-functional theory framework are discussed. Mn2VGe is found to assume two stable structures at (cubic) lattice constants of 5.7 and 6.05 Å, which are well-separated in energy and correspond to half-metallic (low-spin) and metallic (high-spin) phases, respectively. Substitution of Ge by Si reduces the energy difference between these two phases, which become nearly degenerate at an Si concentration of ≈3.125 at% at zero temperature. The analysis shows that the switching between the high- and low-spin phases for this composition can be triggered via a pressure of 2.8 GPa at 300 K. Si-doped Mn 2 VGe can thus provide an ultrafast, low power, cost-effective materials platform for spintronics applications.
