An all digital phase locked loop for FM demodulation.

A phase-locked loop designed with all-digital circuitry which avoids certain problems, and a digital voltage controlled oscillator algorithm are described. The system operates synchronously and performs all required digital calculations within one sampling period, thereby performing as a real-time special-purpose computer. The SNR ratio is computed for frequency offsets and sinusoidal modulation, and experimental results verify the theoretical calculations.

Advanced Avionics Breadboard Executive Design and Implementation

The advanced avionics breadboard (AAB) executive evolved from an effort to design and develop an avionics system. This executive is unique in that it supervises a triple redundant avionics computer system. Three IBM System 4 Pi/CP computers, operating synchronously and executing identical software, comprise the central processors which route data to and from a data bus via an input/output controller. The executive's basic function is to provide application programs with an efficient software structure within which to perform specific avionics application tasks. Although implemented in a triplex data management system, the AAB executive contains the flexibility to be adapted to other systems with minimal change.

The indirect binary n-cube array

The array is built from a large number (hundreds or thousands) of microprocessors or microcomputers linked through a switching network into an indirect binary n-cube array. Control is two level, the array operating synchronously, or in lock step, at the higher level, and with the broadcast commands being locally interpreted into rewritable microinstruction streams in the microprocessors and in the switch control units. The key to the design is the switching array. By properly programming it, the array can be made into a wide variety of virtual arrays which are well adapted to a wide range of applications. It is believed that the flexibility of the switching array can be used to obtain fault avoidance, which appears necessary in any highly parallel design.

Monitoring of particulate contamination and background brightness from IECM based instrumentation

Of particular concern to the astronomical community is the effect of Shuttle Transportation System induced contamination in the form of individual particles and general background on astronomical experiments. In an effort to investigate this problem, two camera/photometers in the Induced Environment Contamination Monitor (IECM) will be used to determine the size and velocity distribution of contaminant particles, their origin, and the extent of sunlit background brightness resulting from spacecraft contamination. The cameras will operate synchronously as a stereo pair to make continuous photographic measurements throughout the missions.

Microprocessor systems for industrial process control

Six computers operate synchronously and are interconnected by three independent data buses. Processors control one subsystem. Some can control buses to transfer data at 1 megabit per second. Every 2.5 msec each processor examines list of things to do during next interval. This spacecraft control system could be adapted for controlling complex industrial processes.

Smart motor technology

Current spacecraft design relies upon microprocessor control; however, motors usually require extensive additional electronic circuitry to interface with these microprocessor controls. An improved control technique that allows a smart brushless motor to connect directly to a microprocessor control system is described. An actuator with smart motors receives a spacecraft command directly and responds in a closed loop control mode. In fact, two or more smart motors can be controlled for synchronous operation.

Design and flight testing of a digital landing approach autopilot

An important feature in General Aviation (GA) autopilots is the ability to intercept and hold the glideslope and localizer during a landing approach. Most General Aviation landing approach autopilots available today use analog systems. This paper presents the designs of digital landing approach autopilots for a General Aviation (NAVION) aircraft using modern linear quadratic control theory. Each constant gain, direct digitally designed autopilot operates synchronously at a slow rate (10 samples per second) and has modest memory requirements, i.e., a full state Kalman filter is not used. The autopilot is designed to track desired position trajectories constructed in an ILS or MLS terminal area using command generators. Alternative command errors for intercepting and holding the localizer beam centerline are investigated. Linear simulations and flight test results are presented demonstrating the successful application of the linear quadratic regulator approach.

Geosynchronous Performance of a Lithium-titanium Disulfide Battery

An ambient temperature rechargeable Lithium-Titanium disulfide (Li-TiS2) five cell battery has completed the first orbital year of accelerated synchronous orbit testing. A novel charge/discharge, state of charge (SOC) control scheme is utilized, together with taper current charge backup to overcome deleterious effects associated with high end of charge and low end of discharge voltages. It is indicated that 10 orbital years of simulated synchronous operation may be achieved. Preliminary findings associated with cell matching and battery performance are identified.

Modeling and measurement of fault-tolerant multiprocessors

The workload effects on computer performance are addressed first for a highly reliable unibus multiprocessor used in real-time control. As an approach to studing these effects, a modified Stochastic Petri Net (SPN) is used to describe the synchronous operation of the multiprocessor system. From this model the vital components affecting performance can be determined. However, because of the complexity in solving the modified SPN, a simpler model, i.e., a closed priority queuing network, is constructed that represents the same critical aspects. The use of this model for a specific application requires the partitioning of the workload into job classes. It is shown that the steady state solution of the queuing model directly produces useful results. The use of this model in evaluating an existing system, the Fault Tolerant Multiprocessor (FTMP) at the NASA AIRLAB, is outlined with some experimental results. Also addressed is the technique of measuring fault latency, an important microscopic system parameter. Most related works have assumed no or a negligible fault latency and then performed approximate analyses. To eliminate this deficiency, a new methodology for indirectly measuring fault latency is presented.

Control Synthesis for a Class of Hybrid Systems Subject to Configuration-Based Safety Constraints

We examine a class of hybrid systems which we call Composite Hybrid Machines (CHM's) that consists of the concurrent (and partially synchronized) operation of Elementary Hybrid Machines (EHM's). Legal behavior, specified by a set of illegal configurations that the CHM may not enter, is to be achieved by the concurrent operation of the CHM with a suitably designed legal controller. In the present paper we focus on the problem of synthesizing a legal controller, whenever such a controller exists. More specifically, we address the problem of synthesizing the minimally restrictive legal controller. A controller is minimally restrictive if, when composed to operate concurrently with another legal controller, it will never interfere with the operation of the other controller and, therefore, can be composed to operate concurrently with any other controller that may be designed to achieve liveness specifications or optimality requirements without the need to reinvestigate or reverify legality of the composite controller. We confine our attention to a special class of CHM's where system dynamics is rate-limited and legal guards are conjunctions or disjunctions of atomic formulas in the dynamic variables (of the type x less than or equal to x(sub 0), or x greater than or equal to x(sub 0)). We present an algorithm for synthesis of the minimally restrictive legal controller. We demonstrate our approach by synthesizing a minimally restrictive controller for a steam boiler (the verification of which recently received a great deal of attention).

Reprogrammable field programmable gate array with integrated system for mitigating effects of single event upsets

An integrated system mitigates the effects of a single event upset (SEU) on a reprogrammable field programmable gate array (RFPGA). The system includes (i) a RFPGA having an internal configuration memory, and (ii) a memory for storing a configuration associated with the RFPGA. Logic circuitry programmed into the RFPGA and coupled to the memory reloads a portion of the configuration from the memory into the RFPGA's internal configuration memory at predetermined times. Additional SEU mitigation can be provided by logic circuitry on the RFPGA that monitors and maintains synchronized operation of the RFPGA's digital clock managers.

Design and Development of the SMAP Microwave Radiometer Electronics

The SMAP microwave radiometer will measure land surface brightness temperature at L-band (1413 MHz) in the presence of radio frequency interference (RFI) for soil moisture remote sensing. The radiometer design was driven by the requirements to incorporate internal calibration, to operate synchronously with the SMAP radar, and to mitigate the deleterious effects of RFI. The system design includes a highly linear super-heterodyne microwave receiver with internal reference loads and noise sources for calibration and an innovative digital signal processor and detection system. The front-end comprises a coaxial cable-based feed network, with a pair of diplexers and a coupled noise source, and radiometer front-end (RFE) box. Internal calibration is provided by reference switches and a common noise source inside the RFE. The RF back-end (RBE) downconverts the 1413 MHz channel to an intermediate frequency (IF) of 120 MHz. The IF signals are then sampled and quantized by high-speed analog-to-digital converters in the radiometer digital electronics (RDE) box. The RBE local oscillator and RDE sampling clocks are phase-locked to a common reference to ensure coherency between the signals. The RDE performs additional filtering, sub-band channelization, cross-correlation for measuring third and fourth Stokes parameters, and detection and integration of the first four raw moments of the signals. These data are packetized and sent to the ground for calibration and further processing. Here we discuss the novel features of the radiometer hardware particularly those influenced by the need to mitigate RFI.

Simulation and Verification System and Method

A simulation and verification system and method. An interoperability server provides a communications hub for communications between communicating nodes. Nodes connected to a first protocol data bus communicate in a first protocol, e.g., a half-duplex bus protocol. Nodes connected to a second protocol data bus communicate in a second protocol, e.g., a full-duplex bus protocol. A time synchronization bus provides time-frames for synchronizing operation of connected nodes. Interceptors optionally intercept communications between nodes.
