Preliminary Reversible Solid Oxide System Specification

This report presents the preliminary documentation of a 10 MWe DC reversible solid oxide cell (rSOC) system designed to use both electrical and thermal energy from a nuclear power plant (NPP). The system is designed to consume 10 MWe DC in electrolysis mode while producing hydrogen from demineralized feedwater. In fuel cell mode, the same stacks produce 2.37 MWe DC of electricity by reacting hydrogen and oxygen, while generating water as a byproduct which is recycled to be used later in the electrolysis mode. The system detailed in this specification is a high-temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) system when operated in the electrolysis mode. HTSE systems have the benefit of producing hydrogen at a higher efficiency than conventional low-temperature electrolysis (LTE) systems. In this report it is assumed that some of the heat required for HTSE operation comes from an NPP. Heat extraction from an NPP for use in electrolysis mode of the rSOC system allows preheating and vaporization of feedwater before recuperators and trim heaters raise the feed temperature to the approximately 800 °C before entering the solid oxide stacks. The purpose of an rSOC system in a utility company setting is to employ energy arbitrage with a dispatchable demand load which can consume excess electricity generation during times of low grid demand / high generation and can produce electricity for the grid during times of high grid demand / low generation. There is a wide range of energy storage technologies that could be used for utility-scale energy arbitrage (utility-scale battery storage is considered the baseline technology), the object of this work is not to compare and contrast rSOC technology with any of these other technologies, but only to present this preliminary design for consideration and for use in future conceptual or front end engineering design (FEED) work. This document is not meant to be a final specification or definitive description of the rSOC system, but it is meant to showcase preliminary process modeling results, provide boundary conditions and interface requirements such as input feed and utility stream flowrates, temperatures, and pressures as well as thermal and electrical energy requirements, and output conditions in both electrolysis mode and fuel cell mode. These results are intended to inform the future development of a conceptual demonstration-scale study to assess the technical and economic feasibility of a future demonstration of an rSOC integrated project at an NPP.

Data relay system specifications for ERTS image interpretation

Experiments with the Data Collection System (DCS) of the Earth Resources Technology Satellites (ERTS) have been developed to stress ERTS applications in the Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS) Program. Active pursuit of this policy has resulted in the design of eight specific experiments requiring a total of 98 DCS ground-data platforms. Of these eight experiments, six are intended to make use of DCS data as an aid in image interpretation, while two make use of the capability to relay data from remote locations. Preliminary discussions regarding additional experiments indicate a need for at least 150 DCS platforms within the EROS Program for ERTS experimentation. Results from the experiments will be used to assess the DCS suitability for satellites providing on-line, real-time, data relay capability. The rationale of the total DCS network of ground platforms and the relationship of each experiment to that rationale are discussed.

The GEOS Ozone Data Assimilation System: Specification of Error Statistics

A global three-dimensional ozone data assimilation system has been developed at the Data Assimilation Office of the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. The Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) total ozone and the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SBUV) or (SBUV/2) partial ozone profile observations are assimilated. The assimilation, into an off-line ozone transport model, is done using the global Physical-space Statistical Analysis Scheme (PSAS). This system became operational in December 1999. A detailed description of the statistical analysis scheme, and in particular, the forecast and observation error covariance models is given. A new global anisotropic horizontal forecast error correlation model accounts for a varying distribution of observations with latitude. Correlations are largest in the zonal direction in the tropics where data is sparse. Forecast error variance model is proportional to the ozone field. The forecast error covariance parameters were determined by maximum likelihood estimation. The error covariance models are validated using x squared statistics. The analyzed ozone fields in the winter 1992 are validated against independent observations from ozone sondes and HALOE. There is better than 10% agreement between mean Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) and analysis fields between 70 and 0.2 hPa. The global root-mean-square (RMS) difference between TOMS observed and forecast values is less than 4%. The global RMS difference between SBUV observed and analyzed ozone between 50 and 3 hPa is less than 15%.

Structuring Formal Control Systems Specifications for Reuse: Surviving Hardware Changes

Formal capture and analysis of the required behavior of control systems have many advantages. For instance, it encourages rigorous requirements analysis, the required behavior is unambiguously defined, and we can assure that various safety properties are satisfied. Formal modeling is, however, a costly and time consuming process and if one could reuse the formal models over a family of products, significant cost savings would be realized. In an ongoing project we are investigating how to structure state-based models to achieve a high level of reusability within product families. In this paper we discuss a high-level structure of requirements models that achieves reusability of the desired control behavior across varying hardware platforms in a product family. The structuring approach is demonstrated through a case study in the mobile robotics domain where the desired robot behavior is reused on two diverse platforms-one commercial mobile platform and one build in-house. We use our language RSML (-e) to capture the control behavior for reuse and our tool NIMBUS to demonstrate how the formal specification can be validated and used as a prototype on the two platforms.

HAL/S-360 compiler system specification

A three phase language compiler is described which produces IBM 360/370 compatible object modules and a set of simulation tables to aid in run time verification. A link edit step augments the standard OS linkage editor. A comprehensive run time system and library provide the HAL/S operating environment, error handling, a pseudo real time executive, and an extensive set of mathematical, conversion, I/O, and diagnostic routines. The specifications of the information flow and content for this system are also considered.

Mission Control Center (MCC) system specification for the shuttle Orbital Flight Test (OFT) timeframe

The Mission Control Center Shuttle (MCC) Shuttle Orbital Flight Test (OFT) Data System (OFTDS) provides facilities for flight control and data systems personnel to monitor and control the Shuttle flights from launch (tower clear) to rollout (wheels stopped on runway). It also supports the preparation for flight (flight planning, flight controller and crew training, and integrated vehicle and network testing activities). The MCC Shuttle OFTDS is described in detail. Three major support systems of the OFTDS and the data types and sources of data entering or exiting the MCC were illustrated. These systems are the communication interface system, the data computation complex, and the display and control system.

The integration of system specifications and program coding

Experience in maintaining up-to-date documentation for one module of the large-scale Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System 2 (MEDLARS 2) is described. Several innovative techniques were explored in the development of this system's data management environment, particularly those that use PL/I as an automatic documenter. The PL/I data description section can provide automatic documentation by means of a master description of data elements that has long and highly meaningful mnemonic names and a formalized technique for the production of descriptive commentary. The techniques discussed are practical methods that employ the computer during system development in a manner that assists system implementation, provides interim documentation for customer review, and satisfies some of the deliverable documentation requirements.

Symbolic discrete event system specification

Extending discrete event modeling formalisms to facilitate greater symbol manipulation capabilities is important to further their use in intelligent control and design of high autonomy systems. An extension to the DEVS formalism that facilitates symbolic expression of event times by extending the time base from the real numbers to the field of linear polynomials over the reals is defined. A simulation algorithm is developed to generate the branching trajectories resulting from the underlying nondeterminism. To efficiently manage symbolic constraints, a consistency checking algorithm for linear polynomial constraints based on feasibility checking algorithms borrowed from linear programming has been developed. The extended formalism offers a convenient means to conduct multiple, simultaneous explorations of model behaviors. Examples of application are given with concentration on fault model analysis.
