Pre-equilibrium evolution of conserved charges with initial conditions in the ICCING Monte Carlo event generator

Heavy-ion collisions can be well described through relativistic viscous hydrodynamics, but questions still remain when hydrodynamics is applicable because the initial state may begin very far from equilibrium. Thus, a pre-equilibrium evolution phase is used to bridge the gap between the initial state and hydrodynamics. KøMPøST is one such pre-equilibrium model that propagates the energy-momentum tensor by decomposing it into the background and fluctuations around that background, whose evolution is captured by Green's functions. We extend this formalism to include conserved charges and calculate the corresponding nonequilibrium Green's functions in the relaxation-time approximation. The ICCING algorithm initializes conserved charges in the initial state by sampling $g$ → $q$$\overline{q}$ splitting probabilities and is, thus, perfectly positioned to implement Green's functions for charge propagation. As a result, we show that this method alters the initial-state charge geometries and is applicable in central to mid-central collisions.

Cosmological consequences of first-order general-relativistic viscous fluid dynamics

In this work, we investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of viscous fluids in a spatially flat Friedmann-LemaîtreRobertson-Walker cosmology using the most general causal and stable viscous energy-momentum tensor defined at first order in spacetime derivatives. In this new framework a pressureless viscous fluid having equilibrium energy density ρ can evolve to an asymptotic future solution in which the Hubble parameter approaches a constant while ρ → 0, even in the absence of a cosmological constant (i.e., Λ = 0). Thus, while viscous effects in this model drive an accelerated expansion of the universe, the equilibrium energy density itself vanishes, leaving behind only the acceleration. This behavior emerges as a consequence of causality in first-order theories of relativistic fluid dynamics and it is fully consistent with Einstein’s equations.

Octet and decuplet baryon σ terms and mass decompositions

We present a comprehensive analysis of the SU(3) octet and decuplet baryon masses and σ terms using high-precision lattice QCD data and chiral SU(3) effective theory with finite range regularization. The effects of various systematic uncertainties, including from the scale setting of the lattice data and the regularization prescriptions, are quantified. We find the pion-nucleon and strange nucleon σ terms to be σ πN = 44(3)(3) MeV and σ Ns = 50(6)(1) MeV, respectively. Furthermore, the results provide constraints on the energy-momentum tensor mass decompositions of the SU(3) octet and decuplet baryons, where we find that the trace anomaly and quark-gluon energies decrease for strange baryons due to their larger strange σ terms.

Stochastic fluctuations in relativistic fluids: Causality, stability, and the information current

We develop a general formalism for introducing stochastic fluctuations around thermodynamic equilibrium which takes into account, for the first time, recent developments in the causality and stability properties of relativistic hydrodynamic theories. The method is valid for any covariantly stable theory of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics derived from a covariant maximum entropy principle. We illustrate the formalism with some applications, showing how it could be used to consistently introduce fluctuations in a model of relativistic heat diffusion and in conformally invariant Israel-Stewart theory in a general hydrodynamic frame. Furthermore, the latter example is used to study the hydrodynamic frame dependence of the symmetric two-point function of fluctuations of the energy-momentum tensor.

Synchronization effects on rest frame energy and momentum densities in the proton

We obtain two-dimensional relativistic densities and currents of energy and momentum in a proton at rest. These densities are obtained at surfaces of fixed light front time, which physically corresponds to using an alternative synchronization convention. Mathematically, this is done using tilted light front coordinates, which consist of light front time and ordinary spatial coordinates. In this coordinate system, all 16 components of the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) obtain clear physical interpretations, and the nine Galilean components reproduce results from standard light front coordinates. We find angular modulations in several densities that are absent in the corresponding instant form results, which are explained as optical effects arising from using fixed light front time when motion is present within the target. Additionally, transversely polarized spin-half targets exhibit an energy dipole moment—which evaluates to −1/4 for all targets if the Belinfante EMT is used, but which is target dependent and vanishes for pointlike fermions if the asymmetric EMT is instead used.

Proton’s gluon GPDs at large skewness and gravitational form factors from near threshold heavy quarkonium photoproduction

We study the exclusive near threshold photoproduction of heavy quarkonium in the framework of the generalized parton distribution (GPD) factorization, taking the 𝐽/𝜓 production as an example. Because of the threshold kinematics, the Compton-like amplitudes are related to gluon GPDs at large skewness 𝜉, distinct from the common kinematics in asymptotic high energy where the skewness is typically small. We discuss the nature of large-𝜉 expansion of these amplitudes in terms of the moments of gluon GPDs in the large-𝜉 limit. Based on that, we propose several ways to extract the first few moments of the gluon GPDs from these amplitudes, with the leading ones corresponding to the gluonic gravitational or energy-momentum tensor form factors (GFFs). We apply these methods to analyze the recent near threshold 𝐽/𝜓 production measurements by the 𝐽/𝜓 007 experiment and GlueX Collaboration and find that the 𝜉 scaling of the measured differential cross sections is consistent with the asymptotic behavior. However, the current data are not accurate enough yet for a complete determination of the gluonic GFFs, and therefore we consider some prospects for better extractions in the future.

Accessing the gravitational form factors of the nucleon and nuclei through a massive graviton

In contrast to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and nuclei that have been extensively studied in electron scattering, there is no known way to directly measure the gravitational form factors (GFFs), the off-forward hadronic matrix element of the QCD energy-momentum tensor. I suggest exploring the possibility to access the GFFs of the proton and nuclei in conjunction with massive graviton searches at future TeV-scale lepton-ion colliders. Flows in the space of interacting chiral boson theories

We study interacting theories of N left-moving and N ¯ right-moving Floreanini-Jackiw bosons in two dimensions. A parametrized family of such theories is shown to enjoy (nonmanifest) Lorentz invariance if and only if its Lagrangian obeys a flow equation driven by a function of the energy-momentum tensor. We discuss the canonical quantization of such theories along classical stress tensor flows, focusing on the case of the root- T T ¯ deformation, where we obtain perturbative results for the deformed spectrum in a certain large-momentum limit. In the special case N = N ¯ , we consider the quantum effective action for the root- T T ¯ -deformed theory by expanding around a general classical background, and we find that the one-loop contribution vanishes for backgrounds with constant scalar gradients. Our analysis can also be interpreted via dual U ( 1 ) Chern-Simons theories in three dimensions, which might be used to describe deformations of charged AdS 3 black holes or quantum Hall systems. Glue in hadrons at medium resolution and the QCD instanton vacuum

We discuss a general framework for the evaluation of the gluonic form factors in light hadrons at low momentum transfer, in the QCD instanton vacuum. At medium resolution of the order of the inverse mean instanton size, the glue is mostly localized in single or pairs of pseudoparticles and globally constrained by the fluctuations of their topological charges. These pseudoparticles trap light quarks, giving rise to emerging multiflavor ’t Hooft interactions. We explicitly evaluate the gluonic scalar, pseudoscalar, energy-momentum tensor (EMT), and the leading C -odd and C -even three-gluon hadronic form factors, at next to leading order in the instanton density, including molecular clusters of like and unlike instantons. We use the results for the EMT to address the contribution of the gluons in Ji’s mass and spin sum rules, at low resolution. When evolved, our results for the mass and spin composition of the nucleon are shown to be in good agreement with the recently reported lattice results at higher resolution. Pion gravitational form factors in the QCD instanton vacuum. I

The pion form factors of the QCD energy-momentum tensor (EMT) are studied in the instanton liquid model (ILM) of the QCD vacuum. In this approach, the breaking of conformal symmetry is encoded in the form of stronger-than-Poisson fluctuations in the number of instantons. For the trace of the EMT, it is shown that the gluonic trace anomaly term contributes half the pion mass, with the other half coming from the quark-mass-dependent σ term. The Q 2 dependence of the form factors is governed by glueball and scalar meson exchanges. For the EMT, the spin-0 (trace) and spin-2 (traceless rank-2 tensor) form factors are computed at next-to-leading order in the instanton density using effective quark operators. Relations between the gluon and quark contributions to the EMT form factors are derived. The form factors are also expressed in terms of the pion light-front wave functions in the ILM. The results at the low resolution scale of the inverse instanton size are evolved to higher scales using the renormalization group equation. The ILM results compare well with those of recent lattice QCD calculations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Universal Bound on Effective Central Charge and Its Saturation

The effective central charge (denoted by 𝑐 eff ) is a measure of entanglement through a conformal interface, while the transmission coefficient (encoded in the coefficient 𝑐 𝐿⁢𝑅 of the two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor across the interface) is a measure of energy transmission through the interface. It has been pointed out that these two are generally different. In this Letter, we propose the inequalities, 0 ≤ 𝑐 𝐿⁢𝑅 ≤ 𝑐 eff ≤ min⁡(𝑐 𝐿 ,𝑐 𝑅 ). They have the simple but important implication that the amount of energy transmission can never exceed the amount of information transmission. We verify them using the AdS/CFT correspondence, using the perturbation method, and in examples beyond holography. We also show that these inequalities are sharp by constructing a class of interfaces that saturate them.

Infinite Family of Integrable Sigma Models Using Auxiliary Fields

We introduce a class of 2D sigma models which are parametrized by a function of one variable. In addition to the physical field g , these models include an auxiliary field v α which mediates interactions in a prescribed way. We prove that every theory in this family is classically integrable, in that it possesses an infinite set of conserved charges in involution, which can be constructed from a Lax representation for the equations of motion. This class includes the principal chiral model (PCM) and all deformations of the PCM by functions of the energy-momentum tensor. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Quadrupole forces between quark and gluon subsystems inside higher-spin particles

We generalize the mechanical interpretation of the forces between quark and gluon subsystems, previously studied for the nucleon, to arbitrary higher-spin particles. For spin-0 and spin-1/2 particles, this force is characterized by the nonconserved $\overline{𝑐}$⁡(𝑡) form factor. However, such an interpretation has not yet been established for higher-spin particles due to the intricate structure of the nonconserved energy-momentum tensor (EMT) form factors. By performing a multipole expansion, we identify the physically meaningful combinations of the nonconserved covariant EMT form factors and provide them with a clear mechanical interpretation.

Thermalization from quantum entanglement: Jet simulations in the massive Schwinger model

We investigate the emergence of thermalization in a quantum-field-theoretic model mimicking the production of jets in QCD: the massive lattice Schwinger model coupled to external sources. Specifically, we compute the expectation values of local operators as functions of time and compare them to their thermal counterparts, quantify the overlap between the evolving density matrix and the thermal one, and compare the dynamics of the energy-momentum tensor to predictions from relativistic hydrodynamics. Through these studies, we find that the system approaches thermalization at late times and elucidate the mechanisms by which quantum entanglement drives thermalization in closed field-theoretic systems. Our results show how thermodynamic behavior emerges in real time from unitary quantum dynamics.

Threshold photoproduction of 𝐽/Ψ off light nuclei

Here, we analyze threshold photoproduction of heavy mesons off a deuteron and helium-4, using the QCD factorization method. Assuming large skewness, the production amplitude is dominated by the leading twist-2 gluonic energy-momentum tensor. We use our recent results for the gluonic gravitational form factors of light nuclei in the impulse approximation, to estimate the differential cross sections for 𝐽/Ψ production off a deuteron and helium-4 at current electron facilities.

Gravitational form factors of glueballs in Yang-Mills theory

This work presents preliminary results of the first determination of the energy-momentum tensor form factors of the scalar glueball, referred to as gravitational form factors (GFFs). The calculation has been carried out in lattice Yang-Mills theory at a single lattice spacing. Using variationally optimized operators, the matrix elements are extracted from ratios of three-point functions to two-point functions. The glueball GFFs and their kinematic dependence are compared to those of other hadrons from previous calculations.

Semi-classical Kinetic Theory for Massive Spin-half Fermions with Leading-order Spin Effects

We consider the quantum kinetic-theory description for interacting massive spin-half fermions using the Wigner function formalism. We derive a general kinetic theory description assuming that the spin effects appear at the classical and quantum level. To track the effect of such different contributions we use the semi-classical expansion method to obtain the generalized dynamical equations including spin, analogous to classical Boltzmann equation. This approach can be used to obtain a collision kernel involving local as well as non-local collisions among the microscopic constituent of the system and eventually, a framework of spin hydrodynamics ensuring the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor and total angular momentum tensor.
