Naphthalene‐Diimide‐Based Ionenes as Universal Interlayers for Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Self‐doping ionene polymers were efficiently synthesized by reacting functional naphthalene diimide (NDI) with 1,3‐dibromopropane ( NDI‐NI ) or trans ‐1,4‐dibromo‐2‐butene ( NDI‐CI ) via quaternization polymerization. These NDI‐based ionene polymers are universal interlayers with random molecular orientation, boosting the efficiencies of fullerene‐based, non‐fullerene‐based, and ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) over a wide range of interlayer thicknesses, with a maximum efficiency of 16.9 %. NDI‐NI showed a higher interfacial dipole (Δ), conductivity, and electron mobility than NDI‐CI , affording solar cells with higher efficiencies. These polymers proved to efficiently lower the work function ( WF ) of air‐stable metals and optimize the contact between metal electrode and organic semiconductor, highlighting their power to overcome energy barriers of electron injection and extraction processes for efficient organic electronics.

19.28% Efficiency and Stable Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by Introducing an NIR–Absorbing Guest Acceptor

Here, a near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing small-molecule acceptor (SMA) Y-SeNF with strong intermolecular interaction and crystallinity is developed by combining selenophene-fused core with naphthalene-containing end-group, and then as a custom-tailor guest acceptor is incorporated into the binary PM6:L8-BO host system. Y-SeNF shows a 65 nm red-shifted absorption compared to L8-BO. Thanks to the strong crystallinity and intermolecular interaction of Y-SeNF, the morphology of PM6:L8-BO:Y-SeNF can be precisely regulated by introducing Y-SeNF, achieving improved charge-transporting and suppressed non-radiative energy loss. Consequently, ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) offer an impressive device efficiency of 19.28% with both high photovoltage (0.873 V) and photocurrent (27.88 mA cm –2 ), which is one of the highest efficiencies in reported single-junction PSCs. Notably, ternary PSC has excellent stability under maximum-power-point tracking for even over 200 h, which is better than its parental binary devices. The study provides a novel strategy to construct NIR-absorbing SMA for efficient and stable PSCs toward practical applications.

Regulating crystallization to maintain balanced carrier mobility via ternary strategy in blade-coated flexible organic solar cells

Regulating the crystallization of donor and acceptor to maintain balanced carrier mobility is of great importance to fabricate efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, the balanced crystallinity between donor and acceptor was finely controlled in blade-coated OSCs. By adding high crystalline FOIC into PBDB-T:ITIC system, a balanced carrier mobility was achieved, resulting in the much improved fill factor. The optimized ternary device exhibits an increased current density, due to the enhanced light-harvesting efficiency with complementary absorption and the morphology change. Morphology characterization demonstrated that the ternary film exhibits a highly balanced crystallinity between the donor and acceptor on account of the formation of acceptor alloy. Moreover, the ternary film not only possesses a small domain size, but also exhibits a high domain purity as compared to both binary films. Encouragingly, a highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.68% was obtained for the blade-coated ternary OSCs. In addition, the blade-coated flexible large-area (105 mm 2 ) OSC based on PBDB-T:ITIC:FOIC ternary system also exhibits a high PCE of 9.81%, showing great potential in the high-throughput fabrication of OSCs.

Unveiling the Morphological and Physical Mechanism of Burn–in Loss Alleviation by Ternary Matrix Toward Stable and Efficient All–Polymer Solar Cells

All–polymer solar cells (All–PSCs) are considered the most promising candidate in achieving both efficient and stable organic photovoltaic devices, yet the field has rarely presented an in–depth understanding of corresponding device stability while efficiency is continuously boosted via the innovation of polymer acceptors. Herein, a ternary matrix is built for all–PSCs with optimized morphology, improved film ductility and importantly, boosted efficiency and better operational stability than its parental binary counterparts, as a platform to study the underlying mechanism. The target system PQM–Cl:PTQ10:PY–IT (0.8:0.2:1.2) exhibits an alleviated burn–in loss of morphology and efficiency under light soaking, which supports its promoted device lifetime. The comprehensive characterizations of fresh and light–soaked active layers lead to a clear illustration of opposite morphological and physical degradation direction of PQM–Cl and PTQ10, thus resulting in a delicate balance at the optimal ternary system. Specifically, the enlarging tendency of PQM–Cl and shrinking preference of PTQ10 in terms of phase separation leads to a stable morphology in their mixing phase; the hole transfer kinetics of PQM–Cl:PY–IT host is stabilized by incorporating PTQ10. Finally, this work succeeds in reaching a deep insight into all–PSC's stability promotion by a rational ternary design, which booms the prospect of gaining high–performance all–PSCs.

Thermodynamic Properties and Molecular Packing Explain Performance and Processing Procedures of Three D18:NFA Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on D18:Y6 have recently exhibited a record power conversion efficiency of over 18%. The initial work is extended and the device performance of D18‐based OSCs is compared with three non‐fullerene acceptors, Y6, IT‐4F, and IEICO‐4Cl, and their molecular packing characteristics and miscibility are studied. The D18 polymer shows unusually strong chain extension and excellent backbone ordering in all films, which likely contributes to the excellent hole‐transporting properties. Thermodynamic characterization indicates a room‐temperature miscibility for D18:Y6 and D18:IT‐4F near the percolation threshold. This corresponds to an ideal quench depth and explains the use of solvent vapor annealing rather than thermal annealing. In contrast, D18:IEICO‐4Cl is a low‐miscibility system with a deep quench depth during casting and poor morphology control and low performance. A failure of ternary blends with PC 71 BM is likely due to the near‐ideal miscibility of Y6 to begin with and indicates that strategies for developing successful ternary or quaternary solar cells are likely very different for D18 than for other high‐performing donors. This work reveals several unique property–performance relations of D18‐based photovoltaic devices and helps guide design or fabrication of yet higher efficiency OSCs.

Introducing Low-Cost Pyrazine Unit into Terpolymer Enables High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells with Efficiency of 18.23%

Recently, a random ternary copolymerization strategy has become a promising and efficient approach to develop high-performance polymer donors for polymer solar cells (PSCs). Here, in this study, a low-cost electron-withdrawing unit, 2,5-bis(4-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)pyrazine (PZ-T), is incorporated into the polymer backbone of PM6 as the third component, and three D-A 1 -D-A 2 type terpolymers PMZ-10, PMZ-20, and PMZ-30 are synthesized by the random copolymerization strategy, with the PZ-T proportion of 10%, 20%, and 30%, respectively. The terpolymers exhibit downshifted highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels than PM6, which is beneficial for obtaining higher open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of the PSCs with the polymer as a donor. Importantly, the PSCs based on PMZ-10:Y6 demonstrate efficient exciton dissociation, higher and balanced electron/hole mobilities, desirable aggregation, and high power conversion efficiency of 18.23%, which is the highest efficiency among the terpolymer-based PSCs so far. The results indicate that the ternary copolymerization strategy with PZ-T as the second A-unit is an efficient approach to further improve the photovoltaic performance and reduce the synthetic cost of the D-A copolymer donors.

A simple-structured benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene-based molecule as a third component enables organic solar cells with over 18.2% efficiency

In this study, research has shown that ternary strategy is an effective tool for improving the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) and simple-structured small molecules with low-cost and wide bandgap which broadens the scope of the choice in third components recently attracted the attention of researchers. Herein, a small molecule with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene (BDT) core named BR-C12 which mixed well with PM6 has been designed and synthesized. Incorporating BR-C12 as third component into PM6:Y6, BR-C12 exhibits a complementary absorption with PM6 and Y6, promoted exciton dissociation and charge collection, reduced bimolecular recombination, resulting in more ordered molecular packing. The PM6:Y6:BR-C12 (1:1.2:0.1, weight ratio) OSC shows an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.02% in comparison to host binary devises (16.42%). In addition, by employing BR-C12 as third component into PM6:L8-BO, the ternary device based on PM6:L8-BO:BR-C12 also achieves significant enhancement in device photovoltaic performance with a PCE of 18.26%. In addition, BR-C12-added ternary devices exhibit improved stability than binary ones. This work presents a method for constructing high-performance ternary OSCs and enriches the abundance of materials for the third components.

Solution Processed Ternary Tin (II) Alloy as Hole–Transport Layer of Sn–Pb Perovskite Solar Cells for Enhanced Efficiency and Stability

Tin-lead (Sn-Pb) narrow bandgap (NBG) perovskites show great potential in both single-junction and all-perovskite tandem solar cells. Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are still limited by low charge collection efficiency and poor stability. Here, we report a ternary Sn (II) alloy of SnOCl as the hole-transport material (HTM) with a work function of 4.95 eV for Sn-Pb PSCs. The solution processed SnOCl layer has a texture structure which not only reduces the optical loss of the devices but also changes grain growth of Sn-Pb perovskites and boosts the carrier diffusion length to 3.63 μm. The formation of small perovskite grains at the HTM/perovskite interface is suppressed. These result in an almost constant internal quantum efficiency of 96 ± 2% across the absorption spectrum of Sn-Pb perovskites. The SnOCl HTM significantly enhances the stability of Sn-Pb PSCs with 87% of its initial efficiency retained after 1-sun illumination for 1,200 h, and keep 85% efficiency under 85°C thermal stress for 1,500 h. Furthermore, the hybrid HTM further improve the stabilized efficiencies of single-function Sn-Pb PSCs and all-perovskite tandem solar cells to 23.2% and 25.9%, respectively. This discovery opens an avenue to the multi-component metal alloys as HTM in PSCs.

Highly efficient organic solar cells with superior deformability enabled by diluting the small molecule acceptor content

Developing efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) with strong mechanical deformability is important to be addressed to ensure their operational reliability in wearable electronics. However, it is challenging to achieve mechanically robust polymer/small molecule OSCs with an efficiency over 17% due to the abundant brittle donor/acceptor (D/A) interface. Decreasing the small molecule content can reduce the brittle D/A interface area to enhance deformability, but it may also cause discontinuous electron-conducting regions and thus deteriorate photovoltaic performance. Here, we incorporate a polymer donor (D18) into a binary PTQ10cm-BTP-PhC6 system at a constant PTQ10:m-BTP-PhC6 ratio of 1 : 1.2 to minimize the D/A interfacial area and modulate phase separation, and subsequently fabricate mechanically reliable OSCs with high efficiency. The large incorporation of D18 molecules increases the crystallinity of m-BTP-PhC6 molecules because of the poor interaction between D18 and the two host materials, affording sufficient pathways for efficient charge percolation at a large D/A ratio. More importantly, highly aggregated m-BTP-PhC6 molecules help to minimize the D/A interfacial area, enabling ternary films with better deformability than their binary counterparts. As a result, ternary OSCs with a large D/A ratio of 1.5 : 1.2 exhibit a high efficiency of 17.3% with a crack-onset strain (COS) of 8.8%, which significantly outperforms their binary counterparts with an efficiency of 13.8% and a COS of 4.4%. Finally, diluting the content of small molecules and controlling intermolecular interaction through the introduction of the second polymer donor represents a promising strategy to fabricate efficient OSCs with superior deformability.

Development of arsenic doped Cd(Se,Te) absorbers by MOCVD for thin film solar cells

Recent developments in CdTe solar cell technology have included the incorporation of ternary alloy Cd(Se,Te) in the devices. CdTe absorber band gap grading due to Se alloying contributes to current density enhancement and can result in device performance improvement. Here we report Cd(Se,Te) polycrystalline thin films grown by a chamberless inline atmospheric pressure metal organic chemical vapour deposition technique, with subsequent incorporation in CdTe solar cells. The compositional dependence of the crystal structure and optical properties of Cd(Se,Te) are examined. Selenium graded Cd(Se,Te)/CdTe absorber structure in devices are demonstrated using either a single CdSe layer or CdSe/Cd(Se,Te) bilayer (with or without As doping in the Cd(Se,Te) layer). Cross-sectional TEM/EDS, photoluminescence spectra and secondary ion mass spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of a graded Se profile toward the back contact with a diffusion length of ~1.5 um and revealed back-diffusion of Group V (As) dopants from the CdTe layer into Cd(Se,Te) grains. Due to the strong Se/Te interdiffusion, CdSe in the Se bilayer configuration was unable to form an n-type emitter layer in processed devices. In situ As doping of the Cd(Se,Te) layer benefited the device junction quality with current density reaching 28.3 mA/cm 2 . The results provide useful insights for the optimisation of Cd(Se,Te)/CdTe solar cells.

Synergy of Liquid-Crystalline Small-Molecule and Polymeric Donors Delivers Uncommon Morphology Evolution and 16.6% Efficiency Organic Photovoltaics

Achieving an ideal morphology is an imperative avenue for enhancing key parameters toward high-performing organic solar cells (OSCs). Among a myriad of morphological-control methods, the strategy of incorporating a third component with structural similarity and crystallinity difference to construct ternary OSCs has emerged as an effective approach to regulate morphology. A nematic liquid-crystalline benzodithiophene terthiophene rhodamine (BTR) molecule, which possesses the same alkylthio-thienyl-substituted benzo moiety but obviously stronger crystallinity compared to classical medium-bandgap polymeric donor PM6, is employed as a third component to construct ternary OSCs based on a PM6:BTR:Y6 system. The doping of BTR (5 wt%) is found to be enough to improve the OSC morphology—significantly enhancing the crystallinity of the photoactive layer while slightly reducing the donor/acceptor phase separation scale simultaneously. Rarely is such a morphology evolution reported. It positively affects the electronic properties of the device—prolongs the carrier lifetime, shortens the photocurrent decay time, facilitates exciton dissociation, charge transport, and collection, and ultimately boosts the power conversion efficiency from 15.7% to 16.6%. This result demonstrates that the successful synergy of liquid-crystalline small-molecule and polymeric donors delicately adjusts the active-layer morphology and refines device performance, which brings vibrancy to the OSC research field.

Interactions between nonfullerene acceptors lead to unstable ternary organic photovoltaic cells

For organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices to achieve consistent performance and long operational lifetimes, organic semiconductors must be processed with precise control over their purity, composition, and structure. This is particularly important for high volume solar cell manufacturing where control of materials quality has a direct impact on yield and cost. Ternary-blend OPVs containing two acceptor–donor–acceptor (A–D–A)-type nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) and a donor have proven to be an effective strategy to improve solar spectral coverage and reduce energy losses beyond that of binary-blend OPVs. Here, we show that the purity of such a ternary is compromised during blending to form a homogeneously mixed bulk heterojunction thin film. We find that the impurities originate from end-capping C=C/C=C exchange reactions of A–D–A-type NFAs, and that their presence influences both device reproducibility and long-term reliability. The end-capping exchange results in generation of up to four impurity constituents with strong dipolar character that interfere with the photoinduced charge transfer process, leading to reduced charge generation efficiency, morphological instabilities, and an increased vulnerability to photodegradation. As a consequence, the OPV efficiency falls to less than 65% of its initial value within 265 h when exposed to up to 10 suns intensity illumination. We propose potential molecular design strategies critical to enhancing the reproducibility as well as reliability of ternary OPVs by avoiding end-capping reactions.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Metal–Catechol Complexes as a New Synthesis Route to the High-Quality Ternary Photoelectrodes: A Case Study of Fe 2 TiO 5 Photoanodes

A new electrochemical, solution-based synthesis method to prepare uniform multinary oxide photoelectrodes was developed. This method involves solubilizing multiple metal ions as metal-catechol complexes in a pH condition where they are otherwise insoluble. When some of the catechol ligands are electrochemically oxidized, the remaining metal complexes become insoluble and are deposited as metal-catechol films on the working electrode. The resulting films are then annealed to form crystalline multinary oxide electrodes. Since catechol can serve as a complexing agent for a variety of metal ions, the newly developed method can be used to prepare a variety of multinary oxide films. In the present study, we used this method to prepare n-type Fe 2 TiO 5 photoanodes and investigated their photoelectrochemical properties for use in a photoelectrochemical water splitting cell. We also performed a computational investigation with two goals. The first goal was to investigate small electron polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 . Charge transport in most oxide photoelectrodes involves small polaron hopping, but small polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 has not been examined prior to this work. The second goal was to investigate the effect of substitutional Sn doping at the Fe site on the electronic band structure and the carrier concentration of Fe 2 TiO 5 . Here, the combined experimental and theoretical results presented in this study greatly improve our understanding of Fe 2 TiO 5 for use as a photoanode.

Improving the performance of PM6 donor polymer by random ternary copolymerization of BDD and DTBT segments

Developing high-performance wide bandgap polymer donors to match the rapidly growing non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) is of great importance to further improve the photovoltaic performances of organic solar cells (OSCs). PM6 and D18 are two leading wide bandgap donor polymers, but their performances are highly sensitive to the molecular weights, which have distinct impact on the morphology and thereby the charge generation and recombination processes. Here, in this work, we reported the random ternary copolymerization of PM6 and D18 segments to develop random terpolymers with finely tuned photoelectronic properties and optimized blend morphology for high-performance OSCs. The resulting random terpolymers (PMD-5, PMD-10, PMD-15 and PMD-20) exhibited finely tuned absorptions, energy levels and blend morphology. The optimal morphology of PMD-15:L8-BO contributed to the fast exciton diffusion and dissociation, efficient charge extraction with suppressed recombination. Thus, the power conversion efficiency was improved from 17.22% of the control PM6 devices and 17.47% of the control D18 devices to 18.12% of PMD-15 based devices, which is the top performance of random terpolymers. Moreover, the PMD-15 exhibited much higher batch-to-batch reproducibility at a broad molecular weight range than that of PM6 and D18, showing promising for practical applications.

Improving Miscibility of Polymer Donor and Polymer Acceptor by Reducing Chain Entanglement for Realizing 18.64 % Efficiency All Polymer Solar Cells

All-polymer solar cells have experienced rapid development in recent years by the emergence of polymerized small molecular acceptors (PSMAs). However, the strong chain entanglements of polymer donors (P D s) and polymer acceptors (P A s) decrease the miscibility of the resulting polymer mixtures, making it challenging to optimize the blend morphology. Herein, we designed three P A s, namely PBTPICm-BDD, PBTPICγ-BDD and PBTPICF-BDD, by smartly using a BDD unit as the polymerized unit to copolymerize with different Y-typed non-fullerene small molecular acceptors (NF-SMAs), thus achieving a certain degree of distortion and giving the polymer system enough internal space to reduce the entanglements of the polymer chains. Such effects increase the chances of the P D being interspersed into the acceptor material, which improve the solubility between the P D and P A . The PBTPICγ-BDD and PBTPICF-BDD displayed better miscibility with PBQx-TCl, leading to a well optimized morphology. As a result, high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 17.50 % and 17.17 % were achieved for PBQx-TCl : PBTPICγ-BDD and PBQx-TCl : PBTPICF-BDD devices, respectively. In conclusion, with the addition of PYFT-o as the third component into PBQx-TCl : PBTPICγ-BDD blend to further extend the absorption spectral coverage and finely tune microstructures of the blend morphology, a remarkable PCE of 18.64 % was realized finally.

15.9% organic tandem solar cell with extended near-infrared absorption

Stacking single-junction organic solar cells is effective in increasing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) by reducing the thermalization loss and increasing the open circuit voltage. Current developments of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) offer a range of materials whose energy gaps are suited for absorbing relatively narrow slices of the solar spectrum, thus easing requirements for current balance between sub-elements in the multijunction stacks. In this report, we demonstrate a solution-processed tandem organic solar cell comprising a binary, visible-absorbing sub-cell and a ternary near-infrared (NIR) absorbing sub-cell. The ternary NIR sub-cell utilizes a narrow energy gap NFA acceptor that enables a broadened and increased absorption compared to a binary NIR sub-cell. An isopropanol surface treatment is developed to connect the hydrophilichydrophobic surfaces in the charge recombination zone (CRZ) located between the sub-cells. The nearly optically and electrically lossless CRZ combined with an anti-reflection coating results in a tandem OPV with PCE = 15.9 ± 0.2 % under AM 1.5G simulated illumination.
