A parallel p ‐adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for the Euler equations with dynamic load‐balancing on tetrahedral grids

Abstract A novel p ‐adaptive discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method has been developed to solve the Euler equations on three‐dimensional tetrahedral grids. Hierarchical orthogonal basis functions are adopted for the DG spatial discretization while a third order TVD Runge‐Kutta method is used for the time integration. A vertex‐based limiter is applied to the numerical solution in order to eliminate oscillations in the high order method. An error indicator constructed from the solution of order and is used to adapt degrees of freedom in each computational element, which remarkably reduces the computational cost while still maintaining an accurate solution. The developed method is implemented with under the Charm++ parallel computing framework. Charm++ is a parallel computing framework that includes various load‐balancing strategies. Implementing the numerical solver under Charm++ system provides us with access to a suite of dynamic load balancing strategies. This can be efficiently used to alleviate the load imbalances created by p ‐adaptation. A number of numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate both the numerical accuracy and parallel performance of the developed p ‐adaptive DG method. It is observed that the unbalanced load distribution caused by the parallel p ‐adaptive DG method can be alleviated by the dynamic load balancing from Charm++ system. Due to this, high performance gain can be achieved. For the testcases studied in the current work, the parallel performance gain ranged from 1.5× to 3.7×. Therefore, the developed p ‐adaptive DG method can significantly reduce the total simulation time in comparison to the standard DG method without p ‐adaptation.

First-Principles Evaluation of Proton Hopping in Tetrahedral Oxide Motifs

Proton-conducting oxides (PCOs) are important materials used as ionic conductors for energy conversion technologies. Existing research efforts on PCO optimization and discovery generally focus on complex perovskite-based oxides that require doping and alloying to engineer oxygen deficiency and high proton conductivity. However, the variety of chemical compositions and coordination environments in oxides poses challenges for efficient materials design. In this computational study, we construct a database of simplified motifs to elucidate the relationship between fundamental materials chemistry and proton kinetics. Specifically, we focus on the zincblende crystal structure as a proxy for tetrahedral metal–oxide (M–O) coordination environments. We systematically quantified the effects of cation type, oxidation states, and M–O bond lengths on the proton hopping barrier, and found that strong M–O bonds and metal cations with large and variable oxidation states (e.g., Mo 6+ , V 5+ ) lead to smaller proton hopping barriers. By mapping the candidate cations and their preferred bond geometries onto materials databases such as the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) and Materials Project, we identified real materials containing the corresponding metal–oxide units. In general, we observed good agreement between the calculated proton hopping barriers obtained in real crystal structures and those predicted by our motif database. We also discuss the limitations of our model and possible future extensions to improve its predictive capabilities. Overall, our model provides a first step for the rational design and quick screening of energy-efficient PCOs.

Synthesis of Chromium(IV) Nitrides Through High-Spin Tetrahedral Chromium(I) Intermediates

Reduction of (depe) 2 CrCl 2 (depe = 1,2-bis- (diethylphosphino)ethane) and (dep-benz) 2 CrCl 2 (dep-benz = 1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)benzene) under 1 atm of N 2 furnished the dinitrogen complexes (depe) 2 Cr(N 2 ) 2 and (dep-benz) 2 Cr(N 2 ) 2 , respectively. One-electron oxidation of these products with FcBAr F 4 (Fc = ferrocenium, BAr F 4 = B(3,5-(CF 3 ) 2 C 6 H 3 ) 4 ) yielded the unusual, high-spin tetrahedral complexes [(depe) 2 Cr][BAr F 4 ] and [(dep-benz) 2 Cr][BAr F 4 ] with concomitant loss of dinitrogen. Reaction of the chromium(I) derivatives with Ph 3 CN 3 furnished rare examples of chromium(IV) nitrides as confirmed spectroscopically and by X-ray crystallography. While [(depe) 2 Cr(≡N)][BAr F 4 ] underwent association of isocyanides accompanied by partial ligand dissociation, neither chromium nitride was reactive toward H 2 or diphenylsilane under thermal or photochemical conditions. These results distinguish the unique properties of the chromium(IV) nitrides as compared to heavier group 6 congeners and demonstrate both the feasibility of nitride synthesis and the limitations of dinitrogen cleavage and subsequent N−H bond formation.

Coherent Phonon Dynamics in Plasmonic Gold Tetrahedral Nanoparticle Ensembles

Coherent phonon modes supported by plasmonic nanoparticles offer prospective applications in chemical and biological sensing. Whereas characterization of these phonon modes often requires single particle measurements, synthetic routes to narrow size distributions of nanoparticles permit ensemble investigations. Recently, the synthesis of highly monodisperse gold tetrahedral nanoparticles with tunable edge length and corner sharpness has been developed. Herein, we characterize a size series of these nanoparticles in colloidal dispersion via transient absorption spectroscopy to examine their mechanical and plasmonic responses upon photoexcitation. Oscillations of transient absorption signals are observed in the plasmon resonance and correspond to the lowest order radial breathing modes of the nanoparticles, the frequencies of which are affected by edge length and truncation of the corners. Furthermore, quality factor values ranging from 10 to 15 are observed for the oscillations that convey potential utility in mass-sensing and plasmon-exciton coupling photonics schemes. Finite-difference time domain and finite element analysis calculations establish the specific optically-relevant phonon modes.

Coloring Tetrahedral Semiconductors: Synthesis and Photoluminescence Enhancement of Ternary II-III 2 -VI 4 Colloidal Nanocrystals

Ternary tetrahedral II-III 2 -VI 4 semiconductors, where II is Zn or Cd, III In or Ga, and VI S, Se, or Te, are of interest in UV radiation detectors in medicine and space physics as well as CO 2 photoreduction under visible light. We synthesize colloidal II-III 2 -VI 4 semiconductor nanocrystals from readily available precursors and ascertain their ternary nature by structural and spectroscopic methods, including 77 Se solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The pyramidally shaped nanocrystals range between 2 and 12 nm and exhibit optical gaps of 2–3.9 eV. In the presence of excess anions on the particle surface, treatment with Lewis acidic, Z-type ligands results in better passivation and enhanced photoluminescence. Electronic structure calculations reveal the most stable, lowest energy polymorphs and coloring patterns. This work will pave the way toward more environmentally friendly, ternary semiconductors for optoelectronics and electrocatalysis.

A tetrahedral neptunium(V) complex

Neptunium is an actinide element sourced from anthropogenic production, and, unlike naturally abundant uranium, its coordination chemistry is not well developed in all accessible oxidation states. High-valent neptunium generally requires stabilization from at least one metal–ligand multiple bond, and departing from this structural motif poses a considerable challenge. Here we report a tetrahedral molecular neptunium(V) complex ([Np 5+ (NPC) 4 ][B(ArF 5 ) 4 ], 1-Np) (NPC = [NP t Bu(pyrr) 2 ] − ; t Bu = C(CH 3 ) 3 ; pyrr = pyrrolidinyl (N(C 2 H 4 ) 2 ); B(ArF 5 ) 4 = tetrakis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluourophenyl)borate). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solution-state spectroscopy and density functional theory studies of 1-Np and the product of its proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction, 2-Np, demonstrate the unique bonding that stabilizes this reactive ion and establishes the thermochemical and kinetic parameters of PCET in a condensed-phase transuranic complex. The isolation of this four-coordinate, neptunium(V) complex reveals a fundamental reaction pathway in transuranic chemistry.

Geometrically stabilized skyrmionic vortex in FeGe tetrahedral nanoparticles

The concept of topology has dramatically expanded the research landscape of magnetism, leading to the discovery of numerous magnetic textures with intriguing topological properties. A magnetic skyrmion is an emergent topological magnetic texture with a string-like structure in three dimensions and a disk-like structure in one and two dimensions. Skyrmions in zero dimensions have remained elusive due to challenges from many competing orders. Here, by combining electron holography and micromagnetic simulations, we uncover the real-space magnetic configurations of a skyrmionic vortex structure confined in a B20-type FeGe tetrahedral nanoparticle. An isolated skyrmionic vortex forms at the ground state and this texture shows excellent robustness against temperature without applying a magnetic field. Furthermore, our findings shed light on zero-dimensional geometrical confinement as a route to engineer and manipulate individual skyrmionic metastructures.

Phonon modulation of strongly coupled gold tetrahedral plasmonic nanoparticles and a carbocyanine J-aggregate

Coupling exciton and plasmon excitations to form polaritons are of great interest for manipulating energy transfer at the nanoscale via the formation of hybrid light–matter states. In this study, we successfully couple gold tetrahedral nanoparticles with the J-aggregate forming dye 5,5′,6,6′-tetrachloro-1,1′-diethyl-3,3′-di(4-sulfobutyl)-benzimidazolocarbocyanine (TDBC) to form a strongly coupled colloidal polariton system with a Rabi splitting energy of ∼206 meV. These gold tetrahedra exhibit coherent phonon modes upon photoexcitation, which produce transient oscillations of the LSPR energy for isolated tetrahedra. Transient absorption measurements of the polariton system were performed and show how these coherent phonon modes influence the polariton states’ extinction. We found that the oscillation period increases by 0.5 ± 0.14 ps upon surface deposition of TDBC dye, demonstrating LSPR sensitivity to the refractive index environment. Shifts in the plasmon resonance due to the coherent phonon modes transiently alters LSPR alignment with the J-aggregate exciton peak, resulting in shifts of the hybrid polariton states’ oscillator strength.

Localizing tetrahedral aluminum in nitrate-bearing gibbsite to constrain defect-impurity coupling

The enhanced radiolytic stability of gibbsite (α-Al(OH) 3 ) containing trace nitrate (NO 3 − ) is a phenomenon in nuclear waste management, but its structural origins remain unresolved. Motivated by the detection of minority tetrahedral aluminum (T d ) defects in synthetic gibbsite, we hypothesized that these sites may participate in NO 3 − retention or mediate H 2 suppression. To evaluate this, we combined orthogonal techniques comprised of spatially selective solid-state 27 Al MAS NMR, comparative spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) modeling. Paramagnetic editing and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) MAS NMR confirm that T d defects are confined to the particle interior. DFT calculations reveal no energetic stabilization of NO 3 − near T d sites. Comparative NMR analysis shows that T d is also present in chloride-bearing gibbsite, which exhibits high radiolytic hydrogen yields. These three independent disqualifications rule out T d as a structural contributor to nitrate-mediated suppression and narrow the scope of defect-driven explanations. The findings redirect mechanistic attention away from coordination defects and toward redox-active impurity pathways, providing a refined foundation for understanding radiation tolerance in Al(OH) 3 .

Octahedral to tetrahedral bonding transitions in the local structure of phase change optical media Ge 2 Sb 2 Se 5 x Te 5-5 x with Se doping

Random access memories utilize fast, reversible switching between ordered and disordered states of matter in phase change materials (PCMs) such as Ge2Sb2Te5-5x. The short-range structure in the disordered phase has been described either as (i) a network of Ge tetrahedra or (ii) Peierls distorted Ge/Sb octahedra. The PCM transition was investigated in bulk Ge2Sb2Se5xTe5-5x (GSST), in which amorphization sets in with Se doping (x ≈ 0.85) upon quenching. GSST has a hexagonal crystalline ground state with Ge/Sb octahedral coordination, but the phase change transition to the amorphous state that is only observed when the system is quenched brings a short-range structure with sharp, tetrahedrally coordinated Ge/Sb correlations and shortened bonds that are distinctly different from the expected octahedral pairing.

Observation of a super-tetrahedral cluster of acetonitrile-solvated dodecaborate dianion via dihydrogen bonding

We launched a combined negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy and multiscale theoretical investigation on the geometric and electronic structures of a series of acetonitrile-solvated dodecaborate clusters, i.e., B 12 H 12 2- ·nCH 3 CN (n = 1–4). The electron binding energies of B 12 H 12 2- ·nCH 3 CN are observed to increase with cluster size, suggesting their enhanced electronic stability. B3LYP-D3(BJ)/ma-def2-TZVP geometry optimizations indicate each acetonitrile molecule binds to B 12 H 12 2- via a threefold dihydrogen bond (DHB) B3–H3 ⋮⋮⋮ H3C–CN unit, in which three adjacent nucleophilic H atoms in B 12 H 12 2- interact with the three methyl hydrogens of acetonitrile. The structural evolution from n = 1 to 4 can be rationalized by the surface charge redistributions through the restrained electrostatic potential analysis. Notably, a super-tetrahedral cluster of B 12 H 12 2- solvated by four acetonitrile molecules with 12 DHBs is observed. The post-Hartree–Fock domain-based local pair natural orbital- coupled cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples [DLPNO-CCSD(T)] calculated vertical detachment energies agree well with the experimental measurements, confirming the identified isomers as the most stable ones. Furthermore, the nature and strength of the intermolecular interactions between B 12 H 12 2- and CH 3 CN are revealed by the quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules and the energy decomposition analysis. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are conducted at various temperatures to reveal the great kinetic and thermodynamic stabilities of the selected B 12 H 12 2- ·CH 3 CN cluster. The binding motif in B 12 H 12 2- ·CH 3 CN is largely retained for the whole halogenated series B 12 X 12 2- ·CH 3 CN (X = F–I). This study provides a molecular-level understanding of structural evolution for acetonitrile-solvated dodecaborate clusters and a fresh view by examining acetonitrile as a real hydrogen bond (HB) donor to form strong HB interactions.

Influence of heterovalent doping on tetrahedral N interstitial formation in dilute GaAsN alloys

Dilute alloying of GaAs with N enables bandgap tuning for near-infrared to mid-infrared optoelectronic devices. However, non-substitutional N incorporation has been linked to lower absorption and emission efficiencies in dilute-nitride-alloy-based devices, especially in those containing heterovalent dopants. Here, in this work, we examine the influence of heterovalent dopants on N incorporation mechanisms in dilute GaAs 1−x N x alloys with N composition intentionally below the threshold composition for the formation of tetrahedral N interstitials (N tetra ) in undoped GaAs 1−x N x . For undoped GaAs 1−x N x , 20% of the N incorporates in non-substitutional sites, as (N-N) As and (N-As) split interstitials. Interestingly, Si dopants induce the formation of N tetra , while Be doping has a negligible effect on the interstitial type. Although elastic interactions due to opposite signs of the misfit volumes of N tetra and N As contribute to N tetra incorporation above a threshold N composition, Si dopants reduce the threshold composition, due to the Fermi level-dependent stability of N tetra .

An isolated water droplet in the aqueous solution of a supramolecular tetrahedral cage

Water under nanoconfinement at ambient conditions has exhibited low-dimensional ice formation and liquid–solid phase transitions, but with structural and dynamical signatures that map onto known regions of water’s phase diagram. Using terahertz (THz) absorption spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics, we have investigated the ambient water confined in a supramolecular tetrahedral assembly, and determined that a dynamically distinct network of 9 ± 1 water molecules is present within the nanocavity of the host. The low-frequency absorption spectrum and theoretical analysis of the water in the Ga 4 L 6 12– host demonstrate that the structure and dynamics of the encapsulated droplet is distinct from any known phase of water. A further inference is that the release of the highly unusual encapsulated water droplet creates a strong thermodynamic driver for the high-affinity binding of guests in aqueous solution for the Ga 4 L 6 12– supramolecular construct.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction induced magnetoelectric coupling in a tetrahedral molecular spin-frustrated system

We have investigated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in the single-molecule magnet Mn 4 Te 4 (PEt 3 ) 4 with tetrahedral spin frustration. Our density functional studies found that an electric dipole moment can emerge with various noncollinear spin orderings. The forms of spin-dependent dipole are determined and consistent with that in noncentrosymmetric magnets driven by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Writing a parameterized spin Hamiltonian, after solving for eigenvalues and eigenstates, we quantified the ME coupling by calculating the thermal average of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities, which can be influenced by external magnetic and electric fields, respectively. The quadratic relations are expected to be observable in experiments.

Primitive quantum gates for an S U ( 2 ) discrete subgroup: Binary tetrahedral

We construct a primitive gate set for the digital quantum simulation of the binary tetrahedral ($\mathbb{BT}$) group on two quantum architectures. This nonabelian discrete group serves as a crude approximation to $SU(2)$ lattice gauge theory while requiring five qubits or one quicosotetrit per gauge link. The necessary basic primitives are the inversion gate, the group multiplication gate, the trace gate, and the $\mathbb{BT}$ Fourier transform over $\mathbb{BT}$. We experimentally benchmark the inversion and trace gates on ibm nairobi, with estimated fidelities between $14-55\%$, depending on the input state.

Quasiparticle self-consistent GW band structures and phase transitions of LiAlO 2 in tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated structures

In this work, a first-principles computational study is presented of various phases of LiAlO 2 . The relative total energies and equations of state of the α, β, and γ phases are determined after structural relaxation of each phase. The β and γ tetrahedral phases are found to be very close in energy and lattice volume with the γ phase having the lowest energy. The octahedral α phase is a high-pressure phase and the transition pressure from the γ and β phases to α is determined to be about 1 GPa. The electronic band structures of each phase at their own equilibrium volume are determined using the quasiparticle self-consistent (QS) GW method as well as using the 0.8 Σ approach in which the QS GW self-energy is reduced by a factor of 0.8 to correct for the underscreening of W in QS GW. The effective masses of the band edges and the nature of the band gaps are presented. The lowest energy γ phase is found to have a pseudodirect gap of 7.69 eV. The gap is direct at Γ but corresponds to a dipole forbidden transition. The imaginary part of the dielectric function and the absorption coefficient are calculated in the long-wavelength limit and the random phase approximation, without local field or electron-hole interaction effects for each phase, and their anisotropies are discussed. Si doping on the Al site is investigated as a possible n-type dopant in γ-LiAlO 2 using a 128-atom supercell corresponding to 3.125% Si on the Al sublattice in the generalized gradient approximation and a smaller 16-atom cell with 25% Si in the QS GW approximation. The Si is found to significantly perturb the conduction band and lower the gap but a clearly separated deep donor defect level is not found. However, the donor binding energy is still expected to be relatively deep, on the order of a few tenths eV in the hydrogenic effective mass approximation.

Boson Fermion Nucleus And Previous Research On Alpha Clustering And Tetrahedral Structure In The Nucleus: Monograph #9

For 80 years, the presence of alpha clusters in nuclei and nuclei with tetrahedral structures has been studied in theory and researched in experiment. Scattering experiments have detected alpha clusters in heavy nuclei. The theoretical treatment of this evidence has considered close-packed alpha clusters bound together in stable nuclear structures throughout the periodic table. While alpha clusters have been conceived as linear two-dimensional and three-dimensional close-packed, crystal-like structures, theorists have not considered three-dimensional extended structures as exhibited by boson fermion nuclei (BFNs). BFNs are composed of alphas and the nuclei of hydrogen, deuterium, tritium, and helium-3 as building blocks. Previous theoretical and experimental work has shown correspondence with the 6 Li, 7 Li, 10 B, 11 B, and 40 Ca BFN.
