Promising Thermoelectric Materials for Terrestrial-Space Applications

Since the discovery of state-of-the-art thermoelectric materials in the 1960s, little improvement has been made in the thermoelectric material efficiency. Although numerous materials have been investigated for their thermoelectric properties, ZT value of 1 has not been significantly exceeded. This paper presents a new family of materials with the skutterudite crystal structure which, based on initial results obtained on several compounds of this family, has a good potential for thermoelectric applications. This class of materials covers a wide range of decomposition temperatures and bandgaps, which could be used for low, intermediate to high temperature applications.

Advanced thermoelectric material development at JPL

A large number of planetary missions under consideration for the next two decades will be using radioisotope thermoelectric generators to provide the necessary spacecraft electrical power. Performance, reliability, lifetime and cost of these RTGs are expected to be more demanding and will require the development of advanced thermoelectric materials. An advanced thermoelectric materials development program is being conducted by JPL and is the subject of this paper. Under this program, alloys of rare earth chalcogenides have been synthesized and their thermoelectric properties evaluated. The selection of specific compounds on which the program is currently concentrating is influenced by criteria such as low thermal conductivity, reasonably high operating temperatures (not less than 1000 C) and stability of the compounds. The paper discusses the rationale, approach and current status of the program. In addition, the thermoelectric and thermophysical property measurement used to evaluate the materials are described. The preliminary results and analysis of these experimental data are also given.

Present state of boron-carbon thermoelectric materials

Boron-carbon p-type thermoelectric materials show promise for use in advanced thermal-to-electric space power conversion systems. Here, recent data on the thermoelectric properties of boron-carbon materials, such as B9C, B13C2, B15C2, and B4C, are reviewed. In particular, attention is given to the effect of the compositional homogeneity and residual impurity content on the Seeback coefficient, electrical resistivity, and thermal conductivity of these materials. The effect of carbon content for a given level of impurity and degree of homogeneity is also discussed.

Novel fabrication technique for improving the figure-of-merit of thermoelectric materials

Reduction of the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials in order to improve the figure of merit and, hence, the conversion efficiency is discussed. A novel fabrication technique that reduces the thermal conductivity without too adverse an effect on the electrical properties is reported. This is achieved by producing an oxygen-free, very-fine-grain SiGe alloy with very small (on the order of 50 A) precipitates.

Sublimation Protection Coatings for Thermoelectric Materials for Space Power Applications

The compounds such as Yb14MnSb11 are relatively new p-type thermoelectric materials, respectively. NASA's interest in these material are to replace the state-of-the-art Si-Ge legs of the current radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs). Ideally, the hot end of this leg would operate at 1000 degrees C in the vacuum of space. These materials, however, suffer from a high sublimation rate at elevated temperatures and would require a coating in order to survive the required RTG lifetime of 14 years. The purpose of present work is to develop sublimation protection coatings for Yb14MnSb11 at temperatures up to 1000 degrees C. Coatings for Yb14MnSb11 present many challenges. The coating must not significantly react or interdiffuse with the substrate thereby degrading the substrate or consuming the coating, must remain intact and not crack or spall during thermal cycling prior to launch, and must be a good insulator both electrically and thermally so as not to provide a short circuit for either electron flow or heat through the coating rather than through the leg. Based on these requirements, several oxides have been selected as possible coating candidates. This paper discusses the development of slurry processes to deposit these oxides coatings on thermoelectric materials.

Thermoelectric materials with filled skutterudite structure for thermoelectric devices

A class of thermoelectric compounds based on the skutterudite structure with heavy filling atoms in the empty octants and substituting transition metals and main-group atoms. High Seebeck coefficients and low thermal conductivities are achieved in combination with large electrical conductivities in these filled skutterudites for large ZT values. Substituting and filling methods are disclosed to synthesize skutterudite compositions with desired thermoelectric properties. A melting and/or sintering process in combination with powder metallurgy techniques is used to fabricate these new materials.

In-Situ Growth of Yb2O3 Layer for Sublimation Suppression for Yb14MnSb11 Thermoelectric Material for Space Power Applications

The compound Yb14MnSb11 is a p-type thermoelectric material of interest to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a candidate replacement for the state-of-the-art Si-Ge used in current radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs). Ideally, the hot end of this leg would operate at 1000 C in the vacuum of space. Although Yb14MnSb11 shows the potential to double the value of the thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) over that of Si-Ge at 1000 C, it suffers from a high sublimation rate at elevated temperatures and would require a coating in order to survive the required RTG lifetime of 14 years. The purpose of the present work is to measure the sublimation rate of Yb14MnSb11 and to investigate sublimation suppression for this material. This paper reports on the sublimation rate of Yb14MnSb11 at 1000 C (approximately 3 x 10(exp -3) grams per square centimeter hour) and efforts to reduce the sublimation rate with an in situ grown Yb2O3 layer. Despite the success in forming thin, dense, continuous, and adherent oxide scales on Yb14MnSb11, the scales did not prove to be sublimation barriers.

Preparation of Thermoelectric Materials From Melts

A review of melt preparation techniques is presented covering necessary phase relationships, synthesis/alloying and crystal growth of thermoelectric materials. The processes described require the knowledge of composition-temperature or composition- temperature-pressure phase diagrams. This knowledge enables the selection of the appropriate method of preparation, apparatus design and processing. The materials, from a technological point of view, will be roughly divided into three categories: low temperature materials (group V chalcogenides based on Bi2Te3), middle temperature materials (group IV chalcogenides based on PbTe) and high temperature materials (Si-Ge solid solutions). All known methods of preparation from melts are described, and a comparative analysis is given. (complete abstract)
