Abstract The authors devised a protocol that allows two parties, who may malfunction or intentionally convey incorrect information in communication through a quantum channel, to verify each other's measurements and agree on each other's results. This has particular relevance in a modified version of the quantum coin flipping game. The key innovation of the authors’ work includes the new design of a quantum coin that excludes any advantage of cheating, by which the long‐standing problem of the fair design of the game is, affirmatively, solved. Furthermore, the analysis is extended to N ‐parties communicating with each other, where multiple solutions for the verification of each player's measurement is proposed. The results in the N ‐party scenario could have particular relevance for the implementation of future quantum networks, where verification of quantum information is a necessity.
ABSTRACT Solving the inverse problem in spiral galaxies, that allows the derivation of the spatial distribution of dust, gas, and stars, together with their associated physical properties, directly from panchromatic imaging observations, is one of the main goals of this work. To this end, we used radiative transfer models to decode the spatial and spectral distributions of the nearby face-on galaxies M101 and NGC 3938. In both cases, we provide excellent fits to the surface-brightness distributions derived from GALEX, SDSS, 2MASS, Spitzer, and Herschel imaging observations. Together with previous results from M33, NGC 628, M51, and the Milky Way, we obtain a small statistical sample of modelled nearby galaxies that we analyse in this work. We find that in all cases Milky Way-type dust with Draine-like optical properties provide consistent and successful solutions. We do not find any ‘submm excess’, and no need for modified dust-grain properties. Intrinsic fundamental quantities like star-formation rates (SFR), specific SFR (sSFR), dust opacities, and attenuations are derived as a function of position in the galaxy and overall trends are discussed. In the SFR surface density versus stellar mass surface density space, we find a structurally resolved relation (SRR) for the morphological components of our galaxies, that is steeper than the main sequence (MS). Exception to this is for NGC 628, where the SRR is parallel to the MS.
How predictable are the collateral effects of adaptation? This primer covers a new study of evolved yeast strains published in PLOS Biology suggests that growth across environments is fairly predictable because the selected mutations only affected a few latent fitness-impacting phenotypes.

Disinformation has become a problem in various spaces, from social media to organizations. Given the lack of evidence and transparency surrounding organizational disinformation, we aim to understand issue of information exposure effect and source trust from the lens of traditional information consumption online. Using an online experiment and multi-level mixed-effects modeling, we find that the exposure effect exists even over only two exposures to a headline, as long as participants are not shown fact-checking. Fact-checking can be effective in reducing the impact of the exposure effect. Additionally, we find that participants trusted sources significantly more before seeing the headlines. The possible presence of disinformation reduces trust in sources, even when considered highly neutral and reputable. These findings can inform simulations of agent interactions with misinformation as well as future experimental designs focused on evaluations of belief and trust based on recognizability of a source.

This dataset contains 4523251 (~6.35 GB) metabolite-spectra matches following identification with CoreMS. Data were manually curated as true positives, true negatives, or unknowns. Calculations for spectral similarity scores were carried out with two methods for a total of ~12.7 GB (6.35 * 2) of data. They are all .tsv files, though can easily be changed to .txt. The file types are: * human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), human blood plasma human urine: already published here https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-021-00894-y, • purchased FAMES standards • fungi species (A. niger, A. nidulans, T. reesei) • soil crust
