2024 Workshop - Remote Sensing and Fluxes Upscaling for Real-world Impact - Tutorial v1

The software-tutorial was developed within the 2024 Remote Sensing and Fluxes Upscaling for Real-world Impact workshop as part of the hands-on session. The workshop was supported by AmeriFlux, National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and CarbonDew. The software provides basic tools to perform the following tasks: - gather remote sensing images using Google Earth Engine API; - gather flux data; - perform basic functions, such as plotting time-series, perform QA of the data, compute vegetation indices; - perform correlation analysis between flux data and remote sensing data; - perform flux predictions based on remote sensing data integrated in different modalities.

A tutorial review of machine learning-based model predictive control methods

Abstract This tutorial review provides a comprehensive overview of machine learning (ML)-based model predictive control (MPC) methods, covering both theoretical and practical aspects. It provides a theoretical analysis of closed-loop stability based on the generalization error of ML models and addresses practical challenges such as data scarcity, data quality, the curse of dimensionality, model uncertainty, computational efficiency, and safety from both modeling and control perspectives. The application of these methods is demonstrated using a nonlinear chemical process example, with open-source code available on GitHub. The paper concludes with a discussion on future research directions in ML-based MPC.

Waveform Simulation Framework: User Manual with Tutorials

This manuscript describes the Waveform Simulation Framework (WSF), a Python-based framework that provides a unified, programmable interface for generating synthetic seismograms for applications such as seismic array design, method development, and special event analysis. WSF standardizes how users define sources, receivers, and velocity models while abstracting simulator-specific configuration details, enabling workflows that are largely independent of the underlying numerical engine. The document provides installation guidance and tutorial-driven examples for three WSF simulator wrappers—WSF PyFK, WSF SW4, and WSF SPECFEM2D—illustrating end-to-end workflows from forward waveform simulation to common post-processing tasks (e.g., visualization and backprojection) using consistent data products (e.g., ObsPy Stream objects and SAC files).

TUTORIAL: A new custom metabolic model for iron-oxidizing bacteria

In this tutorial narrative, we introduce a novel template developed to enable the creation of stoichiometric genome-scale metabolic models for iron-oxidizing bacteria. We demonstrate the development of this template by applying it to Sideroxydans lithotrophicus ES-1, and validate our model using transcriptomic data (Published in Zhou et al., 2022 AEM). Below, we further show that our template facilitates the modeling of mixotrophic iron-oxidizing bacteria and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), by applying our template to the MAG of the mixotrophic iron oxidizer Leptothrix ochracea (Published in Tothero et al, 2024). This work represents the first instance of a generalized and adaptable template for modeling diverse iron-oxidizing microbial systems, expanding the accessibility and applicability of metabolic modeling in this field.

A Tutorial on the Control of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines: Stability Challenges and Opportunities for Power Capture

Climate change is a serious threat facing humanity. The United States (U.S.) and many other countries are increasing the amount of electrical power generated from renewable energy sources in an effort to combat climate change and ensure energy independence. The U.S. has set goals to achieve a 100% decarbonized electric grid by 2035 and a net-zero emissions economy by no later than 2050. Renewable energy currently accounts for about 20% of the U.S. power grid. According to the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in the U.S. in 2021, wind and solar photovoltaic generation supplied 9.1% and 4% of total electricity generation, respectively, and the latest publicly available data show that hydropower represented 6.6% of all electricity generated in the U.S. in 2019. As wind farms have been built in many of the best wind resource areas on land, the U.S. and many other countries are turning to offshore wind for further growth of wind power capacity. Further, the U.S. has committed to deploy 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030, a significant increase from the 0.04 GW of installed offshore wind in the country as of the end of 2023. Many other countries have also established ambitious goals or plans to increase the amount of installed offshore wind power.

ICSBEP Benchmarking Tutorial for DNCSH

As part of the DOE/NRC Collaboration for Criticality Safety Support for Commercial-Scale HALEU for Fuel Cycles and Transportation (DNCSH), a workshop was held on Teams on how to write a ICSBEP benchmark that meets modern standards. The workshop prepared people performing experiments and writing benchmarks so that they have an increased chance of submitting a benchmark that will be accepted. The workshop was led by experts from LANL, LLNL and Sandia.
