Lunar Seismic Detector to Advance the Search for Strange Quark Matter

Detection of small seismic signals on the Moon are needed to study lunar internal structure and to detect possible signals from Strange Quark m&er transit events. The immediate objective is to create a prototype seismic detector using a tunnel diode oscillator with a variable capacitor attached to a proof mass. The device is designed to operate effectively on the Moon, which requires a low power consumption to operate through lunar night, while preserving sensitivity. The goal is capacitance resolution of better than 1 part in 10' and power consumption of less than 1 watt.

Continuous gap measurement

A gap measurement device. The device has a circuit having a variable inductor and a capacitor. The variable inductor has an indicator. The device has a gap that includes a gap measurement and a gap length. The gap measurement is related to the inductance. The gap is configured to receive at least a portion of the variable inductor while the variable inductor moves along the gap length. The movement of the variable inductor along the gap length causes the inductance to change in response to the gap measurement.

Capacitance Probe Resonator for Multichannel Electrometer

A multichannel electrometer voltmeter has been developed that employs a mechanical resonator with voltage-sensing capacitance-probe electrodes that enable high-impedance, high-voltage, radiation-hardened measurement of an Internal Electrostatic Discharge Monitor (IESDM) sensor. The IESDM is new sensor technology targeted for integration into a Space Environmental Monitor (SEM) subsystem used for the characterization and monitoring of deep dielectric charging on spacecraft. The resonator solution relies on a non-contact, voltage-sensing, sinusoidal-varying capacitor to achieve input impedances as high as 10 petaohms as determined by the resonator materials, geometries, cleanliness, and construction. The resonator is designed with one dominant mechanical degree of freedom, so it resonates as a simple harmonic oscillator and because of the linearity of the variable sense capacitor to displacement, generates a pure sinusoidal current signal for a fixed input voltage under measurement. This enables the use of an idealized phase-lock sensing scheme for optimal signal detection in the presence of noise.

Numerical Modeling and Testing of an Inductively-Driven and High-Energy Pulsed Plasma Thrusters

Pulsed Plasma Thrusters (PPTs) are advanced electric space propulsion devices that are characterized by simplicity and robustness. They suffer, however, from low thrust efficiencies. This summer, two approaches to improve the thrust efficiency of PPTs will be investigated through both numerical modeling and experimental testing. The first approach, an inductively-driven PPT, uses a double-ignition circuit to fire two PPTs in succession. This effectively changes the PPTs configuration from an LRC circuit to an LR circuit. The LR circuit is expected to provide better impedance matching and improving the efficiency of the energy transfer to the plasma. An added benefit of the LR circuit is an exponential decay of the current, whereas a traditional PPT s under damped LRC circuit experiences the characteristic "ringing" of its current. The exponential decay may provide improved lifetime and sustained electromagnetic acceleration. The second approach, a high-energy PPT, is a traditional PPT with a variable size capacitor bank. This PPT will be simulated and tested at energy levels between 100 and 450 joules in order to investigate the relationship between efficiency and energy level. Arbitrary Coordinate Hydromagnetic (MACH2) code is used. The MACH2 code, designed by the Center for Plasma Theory and Computation at the Air Force Research Laboratory, has been used to gain insight into a variety of plasma problems, including electric plasma thrusters. The goals for this summer include numerical predictions of performance for both the inductively-driven PPT and high-energy PFT, experimental validation of the numerical models, and numerical optimization of the designs. These goals will be met through numerical and experimental investigation of the PPTs current waveforms, mass loss (or ablation), and impulse bit characteristics.

Capacitor Voltage Ripple Estimation and Optimal Sizing of Modular Multi-Level Converters for Variable-Speed Drives

This article deals with the sizing of submodule capacitors for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) used for variable speed drives for medium voltage and high voltage electric machines. Variable speed drives are required to run over a wide frequency range from zero to a few hundred Hz or even over 1 kHz. Under low frequency operation (<30 Hz), a large current ripple flowing through the MMC submodule capacitors will cause significant capacitor voltage fluctuation. This article proposes an optimal submodule capacitor selection method based on the common-mode voltage injection. The proposed sizing model includes two functions: 1) accurately estimating the capacitor voltage ripple based on the drive system parameters; and 2) identifying the minimum capacitance of the submodule capacitors based on the allowed maximum capacitor voltage fluctuations. Simulation and experimental results show that the error between the actual and estimated values of the voltage fluctuation is within 3% using the proposed model.

Wirelessly Interrogated Position or Displacement Sensors

Two simple position or displacement sensors based on inductance-capacitance resonant circuits have been conceived. These sensors are both powered and interrogated without use of wires and without making contact with other objects. Instead, excitation and interrogation are accomplished by means of a magnetic-field-response recorder. Both of the present position or displacement sensors consist essentially of variable rectangular parallel-plate capacitors electrically connected in series with fixed inductors. Simple inductance-capacitance circuits of the type used in these sensors are inherently robust; their basic mode of operation does not depend on maintenance of specific environmental conditions. Hence, these sensors can be used under such harsh conditions as cryogenic temperatures, high pressures, and radioactivity.

Characteristics of Radio-Frequency Circuits Utilizing Ferroelectric Capacitors

Ferroelectric capacitors, most commonly used in memory circuits and variable components, were studied in simple analog radio-frequency circuits such as the RLC resonator and Colpitts oscillator. The goal was to characterize the RF circuits in terms of frequency of oscillation, gain, etc, using ferroelectric capacitors. Frequencies of oscillation of both circuits were measured and studied a more accurate resonant frequency can be obtained using the ferroelectric capacitors. Many experiments were conducted and data collected. A model to simulate the experimental results will be developed. Discrepancies in gain and frequency in these RF circuits when conventional capacitors are replaced with ferroelectric ones were studied. These results will enable circuit designers to anticipate the effects of using ferroelectric components in their radio- frequency applications.

Active notch filter network with variable notch depth, width and frequency

An active notch filter having independently adjustable notch frequency, width, and depth is provided by three equal capacitors connected in series with an operational amplifier (connected in a voltage follower configuration), a potentiometer across the series connected capacitors for notch depth adjustment, and a potentiometer (for notch frequency connected across the center capacitor); with its tap connected to receive a voltage feedback signal from a variable voltage divider comprised of another potentiometer for notch width. Adjusting the voltage dividing potentiometer will independently set the notch width, and adjusting the tap on the potentiometer across the center capacitor will independently adjust the notch frequency of the filter. A second operational amplifier connected in a voltage follower configuration may be used to connect the voltage divider output to the adjustable tap of the potentiometer across the center capacitor.

CCM vs. CRM Design Optimization of a Boost-derived Parallel Active Power Decoupler for Microinverter Applications

Single-phase inverter or rectifier systems often make use of an auxiliary active power decoupler (APD) to balance the mismatch between steady DC power and fluctuating AC power. This paper deals with efficiency and size optimization of a parallel boost-type APD circuit for PV microinverter applications. Specifically, design of an eGaNFET-based, 400 W APD circuit, employing planar inductor and operating in either continuous conduction mode (CCM) or critical conduction mode (CRM) is considered. Available design variables including inductance value, inductor core geometry, capacitor voltage, switching frequency, and modulation scheme (CCM vs. CRM) are explored to identify Pareto-optimal configurations, which can achieve low California Energy Commission (CEC) efficiency drop while also reducing the footprint area of the inductor. The theoretical study predicts that the optimal CRM design can achieve 37% reduced inductor size, while operating with similar efficiency drop, compared to the optimal CCM design. Experimental results, obtained using two separate 40 V, 400 W hardware prototypes for CCM and CRM, are presented to verify the analyses.

Current Observer Based Predictive Decoupled Power Control Grid-Interactive Inverter

This paper presents a sensor-less current model predictive control (MPC) scheme via a full state observer based current estimator. The grid interactive inverters’ control schemes require current and voltage sensors. Elimination of current sensor enhances the inverter reliability. This paper leverages the inherent characteristics of MPC towards robust current sensor-less grid interactive inverter with LC filter. The observer for inductor current is developed based on the existing capacitor voltage measurement. The estimator dynamic state-space matrices are then obtained through reconstruction of the inverter model with the capacitor voltage and inductor current being the state variables. The controller objectives are to regulate active and reactive power in a decoupled manner. The theoretical expectation, controller performance, and accuracy of the current estimation are verified by conducting a real-time simulation via Typhoon HIL.
