Predicting Pulsed-Laser Deposition SrTiO 3 Homoepitaxy Growth Dynamics Using High-Speed Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction

Pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) is a powerful technique for growing complex oxides with controlled stoichiometry. To understand growth dynamics therein, it is common to leverage in situ spectroscopies, such as reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), to monitor surface crystallinity. Most commercial systems rely on video-rate cameras operating at 60-120 Hz that lack sufficient temporal resolution to capture growth dynamics at practical deposition frequencies. Here, a high-speed platform to record in situ dynamics via RHEED at >500 Hz is implemented. An open-source analysis package is designed to fit diffraction spots to 2D Gaussians, allowing single-pulse surface reconstruction kinetics extraction. Using homoepitaxially deposited (001)-oriented SrTiO 3 as a model system, we demonstrate how high-speed RHEED can provide real-time insight into growth processes obscured by slower acquisition systems. By fitting the single-pulse intensity to a set of exponential functions, we observe changes in the characteristic decay time and mechanism correlated to the substrate step width and surface termination. We observe distinct surface effects, with diffraction intensity decaying on lower-energy TiO 2 -terminated surfaces and stabilizing on SrO- or mixed-terminated surfaces. Similarly, using an exponential model, the extracted characteristic time of adatom deposition decreases with increased density of bonding sites associated with mixed termination and narrower step widths. Ultimately, this work shows how increasing RHEED temporal resolution can uncover new insights into growth processes, with practical implications for the design and control of PLD processes. This experimental platform provides new capabilities to enable data-driven machine learning analysis and autonomous control systems to enhance the complexity and fecundity of PLD.

Proposed Application for an Entity Component System in an Energy Services Interface

An Entity Component System is a data-oriented architecture originally developed to streamline video game performance. Despite being quite new, Entity Component Systems are relatively well established within the video game industry due to the cutting edge nature of research into performance, especially around graphics. However, Entity Component Systems have not been widely examined or adopted outside of that industry. We propose adopting an Entity Component Systems framework to serve the needs of an Energy Service Interfaces. We examine the needs of an Energy Service Interface, give an overview of open-source Entity Component Systems (ECSs) libraries, examine some preliminary performance results for ECSs, and explore the traditional approach to fulfilling the needs of an Energy Service Interface (ESI) with database architectures.

High Dose Rate Irradiations of Enduray Vision System for Nuclear Inspections

Higher radiation-hardened video cameras are needed in the operation and remote handling of equipment in nuclear reactor inspection and refueling applications. Vega Wave Systems, Inc. has developed a radiation-hardened vision system for nuclear energy applications. This vision system has been developed under several small business innovative research programs (SBIRs) from the U.S. Department of Energy, and the previous GAIN voucher program at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) was successful in demonstrating that a prototype of the camera is radiation-hard up to at least 525 kGy (5.25 × 106 rad, Si equivalent) at dose rates of 10 kGy/hr with no measurable degradation in image quality and no measurable radiation-induced noise (RIN). Vega Wave Systems has developed a new version of the camera with more than 3X the resolution using a new design and new components, and this new design requires radiation-hardness qualification for marketplace acceptance. The program described in this report provided high radiation-hardness testing of this redesigned high-resolution vision system using the Argonne Low-Energy Accelerator Facility (LEAF). This report presents the results of irradiation tests performed on Vega Wave System’s redesigned high resolution vision system at a dose rate of 9.3 kGy/hr and up to total doses of 1823 kGy. This was an accumulation of 197 hours of irradiation. The results were excellent, providing proof of the redesigned high-resolution vision system’s immunity to high levels of radiation.

Detailed modeling of the video signal and optimal readout of charge-coupled devices

This paper provides a practical design methodology to calculate an optimal filter for noise reduction in the readout of charge-coupled devices (CCDs) taking into account the charge transfer and feedthroughs due to capacitive coupling in the CCD. A detailed analysis of the dynamics of the video signal and charge transfer is presented, including the circuital modeling of the output stage of the CCD and the dynamics of the electronics in the video chain before the analog-to-digital (AD) converter. This model is used to compute an optimal filter that minimizes the variance of the pixel noise and uses the samples of the charge transfer, before the charge is fully settled. This is necessary to enhance the performance of previous results that also use optimal filters but do not use the transition samples, while also reducing the pixel readout time, resulting in faster readouts. As a proof of concept for the optimal filter, we present in this paper novel experimental results using a Skipper CCD, which has a floating sense node that allows to measure the charge packet an arbitrary number of times. However, this technique can be applied to any CCD that has a readout system that digitally samples the video signal.

Deliberate Motion Analytics Fused Radar and Video Test Results Deployed Beyond the Perimeter Fence in a High Noise Environment

Security systems that protect the nation’s critical facilities must be capable of detecting physical intrusions in all weather conditions. Intrusion detection sensors in a perimeter with a high nuisance alarm rate (NAR) significantly undermine detection performance and degrade security system effectiveness. This research demonstrated a fused sensor system that can differentiate foliage and weather-induced nuisance alarms from those caused by intruders, providing reliable detection within a two-fence perimeter or beyond the fence. A key element of this work is the creation and application of a “deliberate motion algorithm” that fuses alarm data from radar and video analytics to create video motion detection fused radar system. The two-layer architecture of the algorithm uses machine learning, multi-hypothesis tracking, and Dynamic Bayes Nets to differentiate intruder alarms from weather induced alarms.

Radiation-front position control with scenario adjustments during the first tungsten divertor operation on KSTAR

This study reports the first experimental demonstration of a radiation front-based detachment control system during the initial tungsten divertor campaign in KSTAR. The system employs real-time infrared video bolometry with tomographic reconstruction to track the inboard radiation-front position, which served as a feedback variable for impurity seeding. In a baseline scenario without pre-D 2 fueling, tungsten accumulation triggered core radiation surges and repetitive H–L back transitions. In contrast, with pre-D 2 fueling, detachment was stabilized by maintaining higher edge-localized mode frequency, suppressing core tungsten buildup, and reducing sputtering, thereby enabling sustained feedback control. The suitability of the inboard front position as a detachment control metric was confirmed by its correlation with the degree of detachment: with D 2 fueling the relation exhibited a broad hysteresis loop characteristic of momentum-loss-dominated detachment, whereas with N 2 fueling, it became narrow and nearly vertical, consistent with radiation-loss-dominated pinning. These results provide a proof-of-principle for radiation-front-based detachment control, demonstrating its viability as a control approach. At the same time, these results clarify that the detachment outcomes were further conditioned by impurity transport characteristics of tungsten divertor operation in KSTAR, providing guidance for future scenario optimization and controller development in tungsten devices.

HAMscope: a snapshot Hyperspectral Autofluorescence Miniscope for real-time molecular imaging

We introduce HAMscope, a compact, snapshot hyperspectral autofluorescence miniscope that enables real-time, label-free molecular imaging in a wide range of biological systems. By integrating a thin polymer diffuser into a widefield miniscope, HAMscope spectrally encodes each frame and employs a probabilistic deep learning framework to reconstruct 30-channel hyperspectral stacks (452-703 nm) or directly infer molecular composition maps from single images. A scalable multi-pass U-Net architecture with transformer-based attention and per pixel uncertainty estimation enables high spatio-spectral fidelity (mean absolute error ∼0.0048) at video rates. While initially demonstrated in plant systems, including lignin, chlorophyll, and suberin imaging in intact poplar and cork tissues, the platform is readily adaptable to other applications such as neural activity mapping, metabolic profiling, and histopathology. We show that the system generalizes to out-of-distribution tissue types and supports direct molecular mapping without the need for spectral unmixing. HAMscope establishes a general framework for compact, uncertainty-aware spectral imaging that combines minimal optics with advanced deep learning, offering broad utility for real-time biochemical imaging across neuroscience, environmental monitoring, and biomedicine.

3DBFSVBF (3D BatFinder Smart Video BioFilter and Multi-class BatFinder Smart Video BioFilter) [SWR-22-88]

Bats are notoriously difficult to study, therefore, identifying specific behavioral trends and the precise environmental conditions at the time of collision requires a monitoring solution that can reliably collect relevant data. To date, thermal infrared video surveillance has been extensively applied to study bats and has proven to be a powerful yet cumbersome tool. Current analytical approaches are time consuming because data processing data has not been fully automated. In the past, steps have been taken to record avian and bat activity in conjunction with complicated image processing techniques that separate species from other moving objects within the field of view (i.e. clouds and portions of the wind turbine). Once the videos are collected, the post-processing does not allow real time monitoring and identification, leading to a delay in both studying the behavior of these species and determining the effectiveness of any impact reduction strategy being studied. Moreover, object identification capability is lacking, thus limiting the usefulness of video data. To resolve these issues, we are using open source 3D computer vision and machine learning techniques allowing for automatic detection of objects in real-time with the ability to correlate these objects with environmental variables and recording the flight paths of each object. The machine learning has been trained on 3D data and allows for automated real-time data collection, identification and tracking, thereby eliminating the need for long and tedious post-analysis processing of the videos. This machine learning model is an added feature to the previous BatFinder Smart Video BioFilter and increases the accuracy of that systems classification by increasing the accuracy of identifying bats (90% accuracy) and insects (69% accuracy) to a 97% accuracy. There are two object classifier machine learning models, Binary and multi-classification. Binary object classifier labeled BatFinder_Smart_Video_BioFilter.h5 distinguishes between biological objects and non-biological objects. The main goal of this object classifier is to ignore the turbine blades while detecting biological object flying withing the rotor swept area of the turbine. Non-biological objects have a probability of 0 and biological objects have a probability of 1. Multi-classifier labeled Multiclass_BatFinder_Smart_Video_BioFilter.h5 distinguishes between bats, birds, insects and non-biological.
