Frequency Shaping Control for Weakly-Coupled Grid-Forming IBRs

Here, we consider the problem of controlling the frequency of low-inertia power systems via inverter-based resources (IBRs) that are weakly connected to the grid. We propose a novel grid-forming control strategy, the so-called frequency shaping control, that aims to shape the frequency response of synchronous generators (SGs) to load perturbations so as to efficiently arrest sudden frequency drops. Our solution relaxes several existing assumptions in the literature and is able to navigate trade-offs between peak power requirements and maximum frequency deviations. Finally, we analyze the robustness to imperfect knowledge of network parameters, while particularly highlighting the importance of accurate estimation of these parameters.

Toward a 3d Ising model with a weakly-coupled string theory dual

It has long been expected that the 3d Ising model can be thought of as a string theory, where one interprets the domain walls that separate up spins from down spins as two-dimensional string worldsheets. The usual Ising Hamiltonian measures the area of these domain walls. This theory has string coupling of unit magnitude. We add new local terms to the Ising Hamiltonian that further weight each spin configuration by a factor depending on the genus of the corresponding domain wall, resulting in a new 3d Ising model that has a tunable bare string coupling g_s g s . We use a combination of analytical and numerical methods to analyze the phase structure of this model as g_s g s is varied. We study statistical properties of the topology of worldsheets and discuss the prospects of using this new deformation at weak string coupling to find a worldsheet description of the 3d Ising transition.

Nonlinear soliton confinement in weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains

In this work, we analyze the low-energy dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional, large-$\textit{S}$ quantum antiferromagnets with easy-axis anisotropy, using a semiclassical nonlinear sigma model. The saddle point approximation leads to a sine-Gordon equation which supports soliton solutions. These correspond to the movement of spatially extended domain walls. Long-range magnetic order is a consequence of a weak interchain coupling. Below the ordering temperature, the coupling to nearby chains leads to an energy cost associated with the separation of two domain walls. From the kink-antikink two-soliton solution, we compute the effective confinement potential. At distances large compared to the size of the solitons the potential is linear, as expected for pointlike domain walls. At small distances the gradual annihilation of the solitons weakens the effective attraction and renders the potential quadratic. From numerically solving the effective one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with this nonlinear confinement potential we compute the soliton bound state spectrum. We apply the theory to CaFe 2 O 4 , an anisotropic $\textit{S}$ = 5/2 magnet based upon antiferromagnetic zigzag chains. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we are able to resolve seven discrete energy levels for spectra recorded slightly below the Néel temperature $T_N$ ≈ 200 K. These modes are well described by our nonlinear confinement model in the regime of large spatially extended solitons.

Floquet-engineered fast SNAP gates in weakly coupled circuit-QED systems

Superconducting cavities with high quality factors, coupled to a fixed-frequency transmon, provide a state-of-the-art platform for quantum information storage and manipulation. The commonly used selective number-dependent arbitrary phase ( SNAP ) gate faces significant challenges in ultrahigh-coherence cavities, where the weak dispersive shifts necessary for preserving high coherence typically result in prolonged gate times. Here, in this work, we propose a protocol to achieve high-fidelity SNAP gates that are orders of magnitude faster than the standard implementation, surpassing the speed limit set by the bare dispersive shift. We achieve this enhancement by dynamically amplifying the dispersive coupling via sideband interactions, followed by quantum optimal control on the Floquet-engineered system. We also present a unified perturbation theory that explains both the gate acceleration and the associated benign drive-induced decoherence, corroborated by Floquet-Markov simulations. These results pave the way for the experimental realization of high-fidelity, selective control of weakly coupled, high-coherence cavities, and expanding the scope of optimal control techniques to a broader class of Floquet quantum systems.

Multiple fermion scattering in the weakly coupled spin-chain compound YbAlO 3

The Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain, originally introduced almost a century ago, is one of the best studied models in quantum mechanics due to its exact solution, but nevertheless it continues to present new discoveries. Its low-energy physics is described by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid of spinless fermions, similar to the conduction electrons in one-dimensional metals. In this work we investigate the Heisenberg spin-chain compound YbAlO3 and show that the weak interchain coupling causes Umklapp scattering between the left- and right-moving fermions and stabilizes an incommensurate spin-density wave order at q = 2k F under finite magnetic fields. These Umklapp processes open a route to multiple coherent scattering of fermions, which results in the formation of satellites at integer multiples of the incommensurate fundamental wavevector Q = nq. Our work provides surprising and profound insight into bandstructure control for emergent fermions in quantum materials, and shows how neutron diffraction can be applied to investigate the phenomenon of coherent multiple scattering in metals through the proxy of quantum magnetic systems.

Evolution of coupled weakly driven waves in a dissipative plasma

The nonlinear collisional dynamics of coupled driven plasma waves in the presence of background dissipation is studied analytically within kinetic theory. Sufficiently near marginal stability, phase space correlations are poorly preserved and time delays become unimportant. The system is then shown to be governed by two first-order coupled autonomous differential equations of cubic order for the wave amplitudes and two complementary first-order equations for the evolution of their phases. That system of equations can be decoupled and further simplified to a single second-order differential equation of Liénard's type for each amplitude. Numerical solutions for this equation are obtained in the general case, while analytic solutions are obtained for special cases in terms of parameters related to the spacing of the resonances of the two waves in frequency space, e.g., wave lengths and oscillation frequencies. These parameters are further analyzed to find classes of quasi-steady saturation and pulsating scenarios. To classify equilibrium points, local stability analysis is applied, and bifurcation conditions are determined. When the two waves saturate at similar amplitude levels, their combined signal is shown to invariably exhibit amplitude beating and phase jumps of nearly π. In conclusion, the obtained analytical results can be used to benchmark simulations and to interpret eigenmode amplitude measurements in fusion experiments.

Spin relaxation rate for heavy quarks in weakly coupled QCD plasma

We compute the relaxation rate of the spin density of heavy quarks in a perturbative QCD plasma to leading-log order in the coupling constant g. The spin relaxation rate Γ s in spin hydrodynamics is shown to be Γ s ~ g 4 log(1/g)T(T/M) 2 in the heavy-quark limit T/M $\ll$ 1, which is smaller than the relaxation rate of other non- hydrodynamic modes by additional powers of T/M. We demonstrate three different methods to evaluate the spin relaxation rate: 1) the Green-Kubo formula in the spin hydrodynamic regime, 2) the spin density correlation function in the strict hydrodynamic limit, and 3) quantum kinetic theory of the spin distribution function in momentum space. We highlight the interesting differences between these methods, while they are ultimately connected to each other by the underlying Ward-Takahashi identity for the non-conserved spin density.

Strongly vs. weakly coupled in-medium showers: energy stopping in large-Nf QED

Abstract Inside a medium, showers originating from a very high-energy particle may develop via medium-induced splitting processes such as hard bremsstrahlung or pair production. During shower development, two consecutive splittings sometimes overlap quantum mechanically, so that they cannot be treated independently. Some of these effects can be absorbed into an effective value of a medium parameter known as$$ \hat{q} $$ q ̂ . Previous calculations (with certain simplifying assumptions) have found that, after adjusting the value of$$ \hat{q} $$ q ̂ , the leftover effect of overlapping splittings is quite small for purely gluonic large-N c showers but is very much larger for large-N f QED showers, at comparable values ofNα. Those works did not quite make for apples-to-apples comparisons: the gluon shower work investigated energy deposition from a gluon-initiated shower, whereas the QED work investigated charge-deposition from an electron-initiated shower. As a first step to tighten up the comparison, this paper investigates energy deposition in the QED case. Along the way, we develop a framework that should be useful in the future to explore whether the very small effect of overlapping splitting in purely gluonic showers is an artifact of having ignored quarks.

Weak-coupling theory of neutron scattering as a probe of altermagnetism

Inelastic neutron scattering provides a powerful probe of the magnetic excitations of quantum magnets. Altermagnets have recently emerged as a new class of magnets with vanishing net magnetization characteristic of antiferromagnets and with a spin-split electronic structure typical of ferromagnets. Here we introduce a minimal Hubbard model with two-sublattice orthorhombic anisotropy as a framework to study altermagnetism. Using unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations, we find an altermagnetic state for this model that evolves from a metallic state to an insulating state with increasing Hubbard-U Coulomb repulsion. We then examine the inelastic neutron scattering response in these states using random-phase approximation calculations of the dynamic spin susceptibility χ"(q,ω). We find that the magnetic excitation spectrum depends on its chirality for q along certain directions in reciprocal space, an observation that may be used in inelastic neutron scattering experiments as a probe of altermagnetism.

Weak-coupling theory of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Strong correlations occur in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) when the octet of flat moiré minibands centered on charge neutrality (CN) is partially occupied. The octet consists of a single valence band and a single conduction band for each of four degenerate spin-valley flavors. Motivated by the importance of Hartree electrostatic interactions in determining the filling-factor-dependent band structure, we use a time-dependent Hartree approximation to gain insight into electronic correlations. We find that the electronic compressibility is dominated by Hartree interactions, that paramagnetic states are stable over a range of density near CN, and that the dependence of energy on flavor polarization is strongly overestimated by mean-field theory. MERRA-2 Ocean: The NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office's Weakly Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean Reanalysis Using GEOS-S2S Version 3

The NASA Modern Era Reanalysis for Research and Applications (MERRA2) has been a respected and widely used reanalysis that has so far been restricted to the atmosphere. Now a newly released version of the atmosphere/ocean coupled data assimilation system (AODAS) has been developed by the NASA/Goddard Global Modeling and Assimilation Office to perform a retrospective ocean reanalysis from 1982 to present. In addition to assimilating all available in situ data (e.g. Argo, mooring, XBT and CTD data) and altimetry information into the ocean, the new version (GEOS-S2S Version 3) model includes a higher resolution, eddy-permitting ocean model than previous versions, a more realistic implementation of the atmosphere-ocean interface layer, and an improved coupling between glacier and ocean (among other improvements). In addition, this ocean data assimilation was expanded to include the assimilation of satellite sea surface salinity. The MERRA-2 AODAS will be described, and preliminary results will be shown from the assimilation reanalysis and from retrospective forecasts issued using a new ensemble strategy. Following the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) protocols, we will present Class 1 through Class 4 validation results from the ocean reanalysis. Results indicate an improved ocean mixed layer depth, improved salinity near Greenland, an improved diurnal cycle of the sea surface skin temperature, an improved estimate of ocean evaporation, and better representation of western boundary currents (e.g. Gulf Stream) from our new ocean reanalysis. One of the motivations of this project is to provide optimal initial states for ENSO forecasting. Therefore, we will also present some preliminary results of retrospective ENSO forecasts. After thorough testing, it is expected that the GEOS-S2S Version 3 will replace our contributions to North American Multi-Model Ensemble (NMME), WCRP Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S), and IRI seasonal prediction forecast projects.

Fast Sideband Control of a Weakly Coupled Multimode Bosonic Memory

Circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) with superconducting cavities coupled to nonlinear circuits like transmons offers a promising platform for hardware-efficient quantum information processing. We address critical challenges in realizing this architecture by weakening the dispersive coupling while also demonstrating fast, high-fidelity multimode control by dynamically amplifying gate speeds through transmon-mediated sideband interactions. This approach enables transmon-cavity SWAP gates, for which we achieve speeds up to 30 times larger than the bare dispersive coupling. Combined with transmon rotations, this allows for efficient, universal state preparation in a single cavity mode, though achieving unitary gates and extending control to multiple modes remains a challenge. In this work, we overcome this by introducing two sideband control strategies: (1) a shelving technique that prevents unwanted transitions by temporarily storing populations in sideband-transparent transmon states and (2) a method that exploits the dispersive shift to synchronize sideband transition rates across chosen photon-number pairs to implement transmon-cavity SWAP gates that are selective on photon number. We leverage these protocols to prepare Fock and binomial code states across any of ten modes of a multimode cavity with millisecond cavity coherence times. We demonstrate the encoding of a qubit from a transmon into arbitrary vacuum and Fock state superpositions, as well as entangled NOON states of cavity mode pairs— a scheme extendable to arbitrary multimode Fock encodings. Furthermore, we implement a new binomial encoding gate that converts arbitrary transmon superpositions into binomial code states in $\qty{4}{\micro\second}$ (less than $1/\chi$), achieving an average post-selected final state fidelity of $\qty{96.3}{\percent}$ across different fiducial input states.

Weak phonon coupling to nematic quantum critical mode in BaFe 2 ⁢(As 1−𝑥 ⁢P 𝑥 ) 2

Here, in this work, we investigate the softening of the in-plane transverse acoustic phonon driven by electronic nematicity in BaFe 2 ⁢(As 1−𝑥 ⁢P 𝑥 ) 2 using inelastic x-ray scattering, with a focus on the optimally doped sample (𝑥 = 0.31) sample—a system exhibiting signatures of a putative nematic quantum critical point and minimal disorder among iron pnictides. We observe only a modest softening of the phonon frequency and no evidence of critical damping, suggesting that the nematic quantum critical fluctuations couple only weakly to the lattice from our quantum critical model. Given the close proximity of the structural and magnetic transition temperatures in the underdoped sample—which implies that spin-nematic fluctuations couple strongly to the lattice—we conjecture that the quantum critical nematic fluctuations are predominantly orbital in origin.
