Effects of zero and reversed magnetic shear on resistive wall modes in a straight limiter tokamak with zero beta

Advanced tokamak scenarios often feature equilibriums with zero and reversed magnetic shear. To isolate and investigate their impacts on the resistive wall mode (RWM) instability analytically, we construct a series of cylindrical limiter equilibriums with different magnetic shear in the core and toward plasma edge, as a prototype of the configurations in advanced tokamak scenarios. Equilibriums with zero β are considered so that the analysis focuses on the current-driven RWMs. Analytical solutions for the n=1 resistive wall mode, derived from the reduced ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations, consistently demonstrate key insights for both the core and the edge: the growth rate of RWMs is inversely proportional to the averaged magnetic shear when the safety factor at the edge (qa) is held constant. Specifically, an increase in positive averaged magnetic shear results in a decreased growth rate, whereas an increase in negative averaged magnetic shear leads to an increased growth rate. Furthermore, the influence of nqa on the mode's stability significantly surpasses the effects of magnetic shear changes previously discussed. These analytical calculation results provide a verification of NIMROD simulations.

Zero Voltage Switching AC-DC Converter Based on Zero State Modulation (ZSM)

In this paper, a half-bridge building block that can achieve soft switching across the complete operating range while operating under fixed frequency is proposed. In addition, dead-beat model predictive controls to control the same are also proposed. The proposed converter, referred to as zero-state modulated (ZSM) converter, uses a zero state, enabled by a small auxiliary switch, to achieve soft-switching. The approach allows lower switching loss, controlled dv/dt, small filter inductor, fixed frequency operation allowing interleaving to reduce filter capacitor. A single half-bridge building block can used to realize a ZVS DC-DC converter or multiple of these building blocks can be used to achieve soft switching 1-phase or 3-phase AC-DC converters.

Digital zero noise extrapolation for quantum error mitigation

Zero-noise extrapolation (ZNE) is an increasingly popular technique for mitigating errors in noisy quantum computations without using additional quantum resources. We review the fundamentals of ZNE and propose several improvements to noise scaling and extrapolation, the two key components in the technique. We introduce unitary folding and parameterized noise scaling. Furthermore, these are digital noise scaling frameworks, i.e. one can apply them using only gate-level access common to most quantum instruction sets. We also study different extrapolation methods, including a new adaptive protocol that uses a statistical inference framework. Benchmarks of our techniques show error reductions of 18X to 24X over non-mitigated circuits and demonstrate ZNE effectiveness at larger qubit numbers than have been tested previously. In addition to presenting new results, this work is a self-contained introduction to the practical use of ZNE by quantum programmers.

Layered-rocksalt intergrown cathode for high-capacity zero-strain battery operation

Abstract The dependence on lithium-ion batteries leads to a pressing demand for advanced cathode materials. We demonstrate a new concept of layered-rocksalt intergrown structure that harnesses the combined figures of merit from each phase, including high capacity of layered and rocksalt phases, good kinetics of layered oxide and structural advantage of rocksalt. Based on this concept, lithium nickel ruthenium oxide of a main layered structure ( R $$\bar{3}$$ 3 ¯ m ) with intergrown rocksalt ( Fm $$\bar{3}$$ 3 ¯ m ) is developed, which delivers a high capacity with good rate performance. The interwoven rocksalt structure successfully prevents the anisotropic structural change that is typical for layered oxide, enabling a nearly zero-strain operation upon high-capacity cycling. Furthermore, a design principle is successfully extrapolated and experimentally verified in a series of compositions. Here, we show the success of such layered-rocksalt intergrown structure exemplifies a new battery electrode design concept and opens up a vast space of compositions to develop high-performance intergrown cathode materials.

QCD material parameters at zero and non-zero chemical potential from the lattice

Using an eighth-order Taylor expansion in baryon-chemical potential, we recently obtained the (2+1) flavor QCD equation of state (EoS) at non zero conserved charge chemical potentials from the lattice. We focused on strangeness-neutral, isospin-symmetric QCD matter, which closely resembles the situation encountered in heavy-ion collision experiments. Using this EoS, we present here results on various QCD material parameters; in particular we compute the specific heat, speed of sound, and compressibility along appropriate lines of constant physics.

Chiral properties of the zero-field spiral state and field-induced magnetic phases of the itinerant kagome metal YMn 6 Sn 6

Applying a magnetic field in the hexagonal plane of YMn 6 Sn 6 leads to a complex magnetic phase diagram of commensurate and incommensurate phases, one of which coexists with the topological Hall effect (THE) generated by a unique fluctuation-driven mechanism. Using unpolarized neutron diffraction, we report on the solved magnetic structure for two previously identified, but unknown, commensurate phases. These include a low-temperature, high-field fanlike phase and a room-temperature, low-field canted antiferromagnetic phase. Here, an intermediate incommensurate phase between the fanlike and forced ferromagnetic phases is also identified as the last known phase of the in-plane field-temperature diagram. Additional characterization using synchrotron powder diffraction reveals extremely high-quality, single-phase crystals, which suggests that the presence of two incommensurate magnetic structures throughout much of the phase diagram is an intrinsic property of the system. Interestingly, polarized neutron diffraction shows that the centrosymmetric system hosts preferential chirality in the zero-field double-flat-spiral phase, which, along with the THE, is a topologically nontrivial characteristic.

Zero-deadtime processing in beta spectroscopy for measurement of the non-zero neutrino mass

The Project 8 collaboration seeks to measure, or more tightly bound, the mass of the electron antineutrino by applying a novel spectroscopy technique to precisely measure the tritium beta-decay spectrum. The current system produces a single analog signal, which is digitized and processed in several stages before being saved to local disk storage. Online processing includes two stages, an FPGA connected to the analog to digital converter reduces the data down to the region of interest before shipping over the local network for further processing and storage. A normal CPU-based processing stage applies triggering logic to only save data at times when a signal is present, further reducing the total volume of data which needs to be written to disk or transferred for long-term storage. The next stage of the project will need to process many input channels and will integrate a necessary aggregation and combination step prior to applying the event search and triggering logic. We present the online processing system which has successfully been deployed for the current, singlechannel, phase. We also present the status and design for a many-channel platform.
