The high-valent vanadium chemistry of isoindoline chelates

Isoindoline-based chelates, in particular bis(arylimino)isoindolines, have shown extensive metal binding chemistry. Although this chemistry has been explored for the middle and late transition metal ions, little work has been carried out on early transition metal complexes. In this article, we present the first examples of vanadium coordinated using four bis(arylimino)isoindolines, in which the aryl groups are pyrazole, indazole, benzimidazole, and pyridine (ligands 1–4 , respectively). We isolated five complexes using vanadyl sulfate or vanadyl acetylacetonate as the vanadium source. In all cases, the ligands bound in a meridional mode, and for four of the complexes, the vanadium ion was observed in the V(v) oxidation state. Three of the ligands ( 1–3 ) formed VO 2 complexes with vanadyl sulfate and vanadyl acetylacetonate, but the bis(pyridylimino)isoindoline (ligand 4 ) formed a V(v) oxosulfonato complex with the former starting material and a vanadyl V(iv) acetylacetonate with the latter starting material. All metal compounds were structurally elucidated by X-ray crystallographic methods, and we probed their electronic structures using DFT methods.

High entropy oxides prediction and discovery by the Mixed Enthalpy-Entropy Descriptor

The vast, high-dimensional composition space of high-entropy oxides (HEOs) offers exceptional opportunities for functional materials discovery, yet it also poses a fundamental challenge: the rational and efficient prediction of stable, synthesizable compositions and the corresponding structure–property relationships. Despite growing interest, the field still lacks broadly applicable, physically grounded descriptors capable of navigating various large chemical spaces. Here, we introduce a Mixed Enthalpy–Entropy Descriptor (MEED) that enables rapid, first-principles–based prediction of HEOs synthesizability across diverse chemistries. Using MEED, we perform high-throughput screening of two distinct HEO families: rocksalt oxides and perovskite oxides. The predicted top candidates in each family were experimentally validated. MEED reveals unifying thermodynamic and structural principles governing stability across both chemical compositions and polymorphs, providing mechanistic insight into the formation of high-entropy phases. This work significantly broadens the accessible chemical design space for HEOs and establishes a data-efficient framework for accelerating the discovery of next-generation functional materials.

Assessment of Near-Angle Scatter on Exo-Earth Coronagraphy

Near-Angle Scatter (NAS) of the host star’s light into the coronagraph dark hole may limit the ability of a potential Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) to detect and characterize an Earth-like planet around a Sun-like star. This paper summarizes a 5-year investigation of the impact of NAS on high-contrast coronagraphy. Science requirements were flowed down to a draft flux ratio noise ratio (FRN) error budget with allocations for NAS. The modeled sources of NAS include correlated (low and mid-spatial) surface structure, uncorrelated surface microroughness and coating structure, particulate contamination, micrometeoroid impacts and polarization leakage. The paper develops specifications for these sources of scattered light that meet their FRN error budget allocations, distinguishing between scatter that can and cannot be modulated. The development process utilizes an analytical expression that predicts scatter throughput into the dark hole based on BRDF/BSDF. Using this relationship, Photon Engineering performed a FRED® straylight analysis of the HWO EAC-1 (Exploratory Analytical Case #1) coronagraph to parametrically study predicted scattered light contrast in the dark hole. The model revealed that primary mirror microroughness or contamination is not a significant source of scattered light; the most critical surfaces are the smallest and those located closest to the coronagraph focal plane mask. The assessment found that uncorrelated microstructure, contamination, and micrometeoroid impacts require more investigation and potential significant sources of unmodulated scattered light, and highlights that slow thermal wavefront drift is an order of magnitude more impactful than fast mechanical jitter.
