Advancing Heteroanionicity in Zintl Phases: Crystal Structures, Thermoelectric and Magnetic Properties of Two Quaternary Semiconducting Arsenide Oxides, Eu 8 Zn 2 As 6 O and Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O

Two novel quaternary oxyarsenides, Eu 8 Zn 2 As 6 O and Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O, were synthesized through metal flux reactions, and their crystal structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Eu 8 Zn 2 As 6 O crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca, featuring polyanionic ribbons composed of corner-shared triangular [ZnAs 3 ] units, running along the [100] direction. The structure of Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2/m and its anionic substructure can be described as an infinite “ribbonlike” chain comprised of [ZnAs 3 ] trigonal-planar units, although the structural complexity here is greater and also amplified by disorder on multiple crystallographic positions. In both structures, the O 2– anion occupies an octahedral void with six neighboring Eu 2+ cations. Formal electron counting, electronic structure calculations, and transport properties reveal the charge-balanced semiconducting nature of these heteroanionic Zintl phases. High-temperature thermoelectric transport properties measurements on Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O reveal relatively high resistivity (ρ 500K = 8 Ω·cm) and Seebeck coefficient values (S 500K = 220 μV K –1 ), along with a low concentration and mobility of holes as the dominant charge-carriers (n 500K = 8.0 × 10 17 cm –3 , μ 500K = 6.4 cm 2 /V s). Magnetic studies indicate the presence of divalent Eu 2+ species in Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O and complex magnetic ordering, with two transitions observed at T 1 = 21.6 K and T 2 = 9 K.

Rb 4 CuSb 2 Cl 11 and Rb 2 In 0.91(0.2) Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O: Wide Band Gap 0D Metal Halide Semiconductors

Herein, we report the discovery, structural and photophysical characterization of a new zero-dimensional (0D) lead-free all-inorganic halide, Rb 4 CuSb 2 Cl 11 , which adopts a new structure type. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) shows that the structure consists of isolated, distorted seesaw [SbCl 4 ] − and trigonal planar [CuCl 3 ] 2− units, separated by Rb + cations that provide charge balance. Optoelectronic measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate an indirect band gap of 2.89 eV, making it a candidate for wide-bandgap optoelectronic applications. Electrical resistivity was measured at 1.29 × 10 10 Ω·cm, and the trap-state density (n trap ) was found to be 7.44 × 10 10 cm −3 . Attempts to synthesize substitution analogs of Rb 4 CuSb 2 Cl 11 led to the synthesis of Rb 2 In 0.91(0.2) Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O, which was erroneously reported as Rb 2 SbCl 5 O in a previous study. Rb 2 In 0.91(0.2) Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O adopts a vacancyordered perovskite structure and exhibits broad-band yellow emission under UV excitation. The measured photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for Rb 2 In 0.91 (0.2)Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O is 18.2%. These findings add to the growing class of quaternary metal halides with multiple cation and anion compositions, expanding the chemical phase space for the discovery of new materials with functional properties.

Predicted Reaction Mechanisms, Product Speciation, Kinetics, and Detonation Properties of the Insensitive Explosive 2,6-Diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105)

2,6-Diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) is a relatively new and promising insensitive high-explosive (IHE) material that remains only partially characterized. IHEs are of interest for a range of applications and from a fundamental science standpoint, as the root causes behind insensitivity are poorly understood. In this work, we adopt a multitheory approach based on reactive molecular dynamic simulations performed with density functional theory, density functional tight-binding, and reactive force fields to characterize the reaction pathways, product speciation, reaction kinetics, and detonation performance of LLM-105. We compare and contrast these predictions to 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB), a prototypical IHE, and 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazoctane (HMX), a more sensitive and higher performance material. The combination of different predictive models allows access to processes operative on progressively longer timescales while providing benchmarks for assessing uncertainties in the predictions. We find that the early reaction pathways of LLM-105 decomposition are extremely similar to TATB; they involve intra- and intermolecular hydrogen transfer. Additionally, the detonation performance of LLM-105 falls between that of TATB and HMX. We find agreement between predictive models for first-step reaction pathways but significant differences in final product formations. Predictions of detonation performance result in a wide range of values, and one-step kinetic parameters show the similar reaction rates at high temperatures for three out of four models considered.

Femtosecond Core-Level Spectroscopy Reveals Involvement of Triplet States in the Gas-Phase Photodissociation of Fe(CO) 5

Excitation of iron pentacarbonyl [Fe(CO) 5 ], a prototypical photocatalyst, at 266 nm causes the sequential loss of two CO ligands in the gas phase, creating catalytically active, unsaturated iron carbonyls. Despite numerous studies, major aspects of its ultrafast photochemistry remain unresolved because the early excited-state dynamics have so far eluded spectroscopic observation. This has led to the long-held assumption that ultrafast dissociation of gas-phase Fe(CO) 5 proceeds exclusively on the singlet manifold. Herein, we present a combined experimental–theoretical study employing ultrafast extreme ultraviolet transient absorption spectroscopy near the Fe M 2,3 -edge, which features spectral evolution on 100 fs and 3 ps time scales, alongside high-level electronic structure theory, which enables characterization of the molecular geometries and electronic states involved in the ultrafast photodissociation of Fe(CO) 5 . We assign the 100 fs evolution to spectroscopic signatures associated with intertwined structural and electronic dynamics on the singlet metal-centered states during the first CO loss and the 3 ps evolution to the competing dissociation of Fe(CO) 4 along the lowest singlet and triplet surfaces to form Fe(CO) 3 . Calculations of transient spectra in both singlet and triplet states as well as spin–orbit coupling constants along key structural pathways provide evidence for intersystem crossing to the triplet ground state of Fe(CO) 4 . Finally, our work presents the first spectroscopic detection of transient excited states during ultrafast photodissociation of gas-phase Fe(CO) 5 and challenges the long-standing assumption that triplet states do not play a role in the ultrafast dynamics.

Uptake of N 2 O 5 by aqueous aerosol unveiled using chemically accurate many-body potentials

The reactive uptake of N 2 O 5 to aqueous aerosol is a major loss channel for nitrogen oxides in the troposphere. Despite its importance, a quantitative picture of the uptake mechanism is missing. Here we use molecular dynamics simulations with a data-driven many-body model of coupled-cluster accuracy to quantify thermodynamics and kinetics of solvation and adsorption of N 2 O 5 in water. The free energy profile highlights that N 2 O 5 is selectively adsorbed to the liquid–vapor interface and weakly solvated. Accommodation into bulk water occurs slowly, competing with evaporation upon adsorption from gas phase. Leveraging the quantitative accuracy of the model, we parameterize and solve a reaction–diffusion equation to determine hydrolysis rates consistent with experimental observations. We find a short reaction–diffusion length, indicating that the uptake is dominated by interfacial features. The parameters deduced here, including solubility, accommodation coefficient, and hydrolysis rate, afford a foundation for which to consider the reactive loss of N 2 O 5 in more complex solutions.

Signatures of a magnetic-field-induced Lifshitz transition in the ultra-quantum limit of the topological semimetal ZrTe 5

The quantum limit (QL) of an electron liquid, realised at strong magnetic fields, has long been proposed to host a wealth of strongly correlated states of matter. Electronic states in the QL are, for example, quasi-one dimensional (1D), which implies perfectly nested Fermi surfaces prone to instabilities. Whereas the QL typically requires unreachably strong magnetic fields, the topological semimetal ZrTe 5 has been shown to reach the QL at fields of only a few Tesla. Here, we characterize the QL of ZrTe 5 at fields up to 64 T by a combination of electrical-transport and ultrasound measurements. We find that the Zeeman effect in ZrTe 5 enables an efficient tuning of the 1D Landau band structure with magnetic field. This results in a Lifshitz transition to a 1D Weyl regime in which perfect charge neutrality can be achieved. Since no instability-driven phase transitions destabilise the 1D electron liquid for the investigated field strengths and temperatures, our analysis establishes ZrTe 5 as a thoroughly understood platform for potentially inducing more exotic interaction-driven phases at lower temperatures.

Laser transport and backscatter in low-density SiO 2 and Ta2O 5 foams

Experiments using a single 527 nm wavelength beam interacting with sub- and supercritical density SiO 2 and Ta 2 O 5 foams examined laser propagation and backscatter from laser–plasma instabilities such as Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). Two densities of each material were examined, and multiple diagnostics were used to characterize the propagation and backscatter. For 5 mg/cc SiO 2 (n e /n c = 0.375), the laser propagation distance was well approximated by treating the foam as a gas. However, for the 2 mg/cc SiO 2 foam (n e /n c = 0.15), the same model over-predicts the propagation distance by ~40%. Furthermore, existing analytical theories on propagation through subcritical foams were able to account for this difference. The laser heat wave propagated ~1/2 as far in Ta 2 O 5 than SiO 2 foams with similar electron density. We showed that this difference is due to the increased radiation losses in the higher Z foam. The fraction of backscattered light scales linearly with incident laser intensity for the range of intensities examined. Ta 2 O 5 foams had significantly lower levels of backscatter (1–3%) than the SiO 2 (4–8%), which is consistent with estimates of large Landau damping due to the presence of the oxygen atoms. The measured fraction of SBS backscattered laser energy for a 2 mg/cc SiO 2 foam shot was ~4 times lower than predicted by simulations assuming a gas-like foam. We found that we needed to assume increased ion heating such that T i /T e ~1.2–1.5 in the plasma to agree with the measured SBS reflectivity. Analytical models of laser-heated foams predict preferential heating of the ions as has been observed in previous experiments.

Modulating above-room-temperature magnetism in Ga-implanted Fe 5 GeTe 2 van der Waals magnets

The creation of van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets with tunable Curie temperature (T C ) and magnetic anisotropy is essential in developing vdW magnet-based devices. Here, we report an effective and reliable method for modulating the magnetic properties of vdW Fe 5 GeTe 2 by site-specific Ga + implantation. In this study, we report an easy axis in the ab-plane for bulk Fe 5 GeTe 2 (T C = 310 K) and an axis out of the plane for thin Fe 5 GeTe 2 flakes (T C = 290 K). Combining element-resolved photoemission electron microscopy and spatially resolved magneto-optic Kerr microscopy, we find that the implantation of a tiny amount of 10 –3 Ga + ·Å –3 in Fe 5 GeTe 2 greatly enhances the T C from 290 to 360 K and switches the magnetic easy axis from the out-of-plane c axis to the ab-plane. The room-temperature x-ray magnetic circular dichroism signal is enhanced from 0% to 9% at an implantation level of 10 –2 Ga + ·Å –3 . These results provide new opportunities for tailoring the magnetic properties of vdW materials beyond room temperature.

A perspective on the electronic instabilities in kagome AV 3 Sb 5

The electronic properties of solids are strongly shaped by lattice geometry. A prime example is the kagome lattice, whose band structure features van Hove singularities (vHS), flat bands, and Dirac crossings. These characteristics naturally promote strong electronic correlations. In the kagome metals AV 3 Sb 5 , the Fermi level lies close to kagome-derived vHS, placing the system in a regime of heightened electronic susceptibility and correlation-driven instabilities. In this Perspective, we discuss the electronic instabilities observed experimentally in AV 3 Sb 5 , outline the physical pictures that we find most compelling, and share our views on the current excitement, open debates, and future opportunities in these materials. We view AV 3 Sb 5 as a uniquely clean platform for exploring how multiple correlated phases coexist, compete, and intertwine on a single Fermi surface, offering a level of conceptual richness comparable to that of the cuprates. Although a lot of information about AV 3 Sb 5 has been collected in recent years, we still lack a clear understanding of each of its electronic phases or their interplay. Furthermore this Perspective aims to expose the status of the field and cajole a communal effort toward a unified physical description of these compounds.

From antiferromagnetic and hidden order to Pauli paramagnetism in U M 2 Si 2 compounds with 5 f electron duality

Using inelastic X-ray scattering beyond the dipole limit and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we establish the dual nature of the U 5 f electrons in U M 2 Si 2 ( M = Pd, Ni, Ru, Fe), regardless of their degree of delocalization. We have observed that the compounds have in common a local atomic-like state that is well described by the U 5 f 2 configuration with the $Γ^{(1)}_1$ and $Γ_2$ quasi-doublet symmetry. The amount of the U 5 f 3 configuration, however, varies considerably across the U M 2 Si 2 series, indicating an increase of U 5 f itineracy in going from M = Pd to Ni to Ru and to the Fe compound. The identified electronic states explain the formation of the very large ordered magnetic moments in UPd 2 Si 2 and UNi 2 Si 2 , the availability of orbital degrees of freedom needed for the hidden order in URu 2 Si 2 to occur, as well as the appearance of Pauli paramagnetism in UFe 2 Si 2 . A unified and systematic picture of the U M 2 Si 2 compounds may now be drawn, thereby providing suggestions for additional experiments to induce hidden order and/or superconductivity in U compounds with the tetragonal body-centered ThCr 2 Si 2 structure.

Evolution of magnetic surfboards and spin glass behavior in (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5

The unusual anisotropy of the spin glass (SG) transition in the pseudobrookite system Fe 2 TiO 5 has been interpreted as arising from an induced, van der Waals-like, interaction among magnetic clusters. Here we present susceptibility ($\chi$) and specific heat data ($C$) for Fe 2 TiO 5 diluted with non-magnetic Ga, (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5 , for disorder parameter $p$ = 0, 0.11, and 0.42, and elastic neutron scattering data for $p$ = 0.20. A uniform suppression of ${T_g}$ is observed upon increasing $p$, along with a value of $\chi \left( {{T_g}} \right)$ that increases as $T_g$ decreases, i.e. $d\chi ({T_g})/d{T_g} < 0$ We also observe $C\left( T \right) \propto {T^2}$ in the low temperature limit. In conclusion, the observed behavior places (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5 in the category of a strongly geometrically frustrated SG.

Tuning the room temperature ferromagnetism in Fe 5 GeTe 2 by arsenic substitution

In order to tune the magnetic properties of the cleavable high-Curie temperature ferromagnet Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe 2 , the effect of increasing the electron count through arsenic substitution has been investigated. Small additions of arsenic (2.5% and 5%) seemingly enhance ferromagnetic order in polycrystalline samples by quenching fluctuations on one of the three magnetic sublattices, whereas larger As concentrations decrease the ferromagnetic Curie temperature (T C ) and saturation magnetization. Furthermore, this work also describes the growth and characterization of Fe 4.8 AsTe 2 single crystals that are structurally analogous to Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe 2 but with some phase stability complications. Magnetization measurements reveal dominant antiferromagnetic behavior in Fe 4.8 AsTe 2 with a Néel temperature of $T_{\textrm{N}} \approx$ 42 K. A field-induced spin-flop below T N results in a switch from negative to positive magnetoresistance, with significant hysteresis causing butterfly-shaped resistance loops. In addition to reporting the properties of Fe 4.8 AsTe 2 , this work shows the importance of manipulating the individual magnetic sublattices in Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe 2 and motivates further efforts to control the magnetic properties in related materials by fine tuning of the Fermi energy or crystal chemistry.

Anisotropic magnetic and transport properties of orthorhombic o-Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5

Abstract The crystal structure, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), heat capacity, and anisotropic magnetic and resistivity measurements are reported for Sn flux grown single crystals of orthorhombic Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 (U 2 Co 3 Si 5 -type, Ibam ). Our findings show that o -Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 hosts nearly trivalent Pr ions, as evidenced by EELS and fits to temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements. Complex magnetic ordering with a partially spin-polarized state emerges near T sp = 32 K, with a spin reconfiguration transition near T M = 15 K. Heat capacity measurements show that the phase transitions appear as broad peaks in the vicinity of T sp and T M . The magnetic entropy further reveals that crystal electric field splitting lifts the Hund’s rule degeneracy at low temperatures. Taken together, these measurements show that Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 is an environment for complex f state magnetism with potential strongly correlated electron states.

Anisotropic magnetism and Kondo-lattice behavior in the frustrated antiferromagnet Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5

Here, we report the synthesis and physical characterization of single-crystalline Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5 , a previously unexplored member of the Ce 3 ⁢𝑀⁢𝑃⁢𝑛 5 family. This compound crystallizes in the hexagonal 𝑃⁢6 3 /𝑚⁢𝑐⁢𝑚 structure, featuring an anisotropic Ce sublattice composed of zigzag chains along the 𝑐 axis and a distorted kagome-like network in the basal plane. Magnetization measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below 𝑇 𝑁 ≈ 4.2K with strong magnetic anisotropy and multiple field-induced metamagnetic transitions for fields applied perpendicular to [001], leading to a dome-shaped 𝐻–𝑇 phase diagram. Electrical transport exhibits characteristic signatures of a Ce-based Kondo lattice, including broad resistivity maxima and pronounced field-dependent anomalies in the magnetoresistance and Hall response that track the magnetic phase boundaries. Specific-heat measurements confirm the magnetic transition and show that the full R ⁢ln⁡ 2 entropy expected for a Ce 3+ Kramers doublet is recovered by 20 K, indicating an extended temperature range of magnetic fluctuations consistent with Kondo correlations. Our results establish Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5 as a platform within the Ce 3 ⁢𝑀⁢𝑃⁢𝑛 5 family for exploring the interplay of geometric frustration, magnetic anisotropy, and Kondo-lattice physics under applied magnetic fields.

Coherent phonon pairs and rotational symmetry breaking of charge density wave order in the kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5

Here, in this work we perform ultrafast time-resolved reflectivity measurements to study the symmetry breaking in the charge-density wave (CDW) phase of CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 . By extracting the coherent phonon spectrum in the CDW phase of CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 , we discover close phonon pairs near 1.3 THz and 3.1 THz, as well as a new mode at 1.84 THz. The 1.3 THz phonon pair and the 1.84 THz mode are observed up to the CDW transition temperature. Combining density-functional theory calculations, we show that these phonon pairs arise from the coexistence of Star of David and inverse Star of David distortions combined with sixfold rotational symmetry breaking. An anisotropy in the magnitude of transient reflectivity change is also revealed at the onset of CDW order. Our results thus indicate broken sixfold rotational symmetry in the charge-density wave state of CsV 3⁢ Sb 5 , along with the absence of nematic fluctuation above 𝑇 CDW . Meanwhile, the measured coherent phonon spectrum in the CDW phase of CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5−𝑥 ⁢Sn 𝑥 with 𝑥 = 0.03–0.04 matches the staggered inverse Star of David with interlayer 𝜋 phase shift. This CDW structure contrasts with undoped CsV3⁢Sb5 and explains the evolution from a phonon pair to a single mode at 1.3 THz by 𝑥 = 0.03–0.04 Sn doping.

Observation of room-temperature charge density wave correlations via coherent phonon spectroscopy in the Sn-doped kagome superconductor CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5

In this study, we perform ultrafast time-resolved reflectivity measurements to track the evolution of charge density wave (CDW) correlations in Sn-doped Kagome superconductor CsV 3⁢ Sb 5−𝑥 ⁢Sn 𝑥 . By extracting the coherent phonon spectrum, we evidence robust signatures of CDW correlations at temperature and doping ranges far beyond the phase boundary of long-range CDW order. Remarkably, we show that short-range CDW correlations survive up to room temperature in 𝑥 = 0.32 Sn-doped CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 , supported by synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements. We point out that the introduction of quenched disorder by Sn doping can pin the CDW and form static short-range CDW, which can explain the observed persistent CDW signatures. Our results thus corroborate the ubiquity and robustness of CDW correlations in Sn-doped CsV 3⁢ Sb 5 and provide new insights on the role of disorders on the CDW correlations in AV 3 ⁢Sb 5 family.

Enhancing superconductivity of Y 5 Rh 6 Sn 18 by atomic disorder

Here, we investigate the effect of enhancement of superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ by nonmagnetic atom disorder in the filled skutterudite-related tetragonal Y 5 Rh 6 Sn 18 compound doped with Ca. We documented experimentally that Y 5 Rh 6 Sn 18 and its Ca-doped alloys are electronically inhomogeneous at the nanoscale, when Ca content is smaller than ~1.5 in the Y 5– x Ca x Rh 6 Sn 18 system, while for $\textit{x}$ ≥ 1.5 much stronger chemical phase inhomogeneity is observed with an about 20% volume fraction of the second 3:4:13 cubic phase, which we interpret as a fluctuation of stoichiometry within the bulk sample. Then the enhancement of $T_c$ vs $\textit{x}$ could be modeled by a mechanism proposed in recent theoretical reports for increasing the mean-field transition temperature $T_c$ in the presence of nonmagnetic disorder. The increase in disorder with doping increases the sample inhomogeneity and causes a systematic increase in $T_c$, while for two-phase $\textit{x}$ ≥ 1.5 samples the critical temperature $T^{\star}_c ≈ 2 × T_c$ rapidly increases. Based on band structure calculations performed under pressure, we demonstrate how the change in density of states would affect $T_c$ of Y 5 Rh 6 Sn 18 . We obtained the Grüneisen parameter $γ_G$ larger for the inhomogeneous phase with respect to $γ_G$ of the bulk $T_c$ phase and attribute the enhancement of $T_c$ to larger stiffening of the high-temperature $T^{\star}_c$ phase.

Itinerant ferromagnetism in van der Waals Fe 5 – x Ge Te 2 crystals above room temperature

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have recently attracted increasing attention, as they provide a novel system for exploring 2D magnetism. However, intrinsic ferromagnetism in 2D systems has almost exclusively been observed at low temperatures, limiting their technological relevance. Fe N Ge Te 2 ( N = 3 , 4, and 5) systems are currently becoming the most attractive 2D vdW materials due to their relatively high Curie temperatures and large saturation magnetization. However, the nature of their complex yet intriguing magnetic behaviors is still unclear, in part due to the multiple inequivalent iron sites and iron vacancies. In this study, we show evolution of magnetic ordering transitions in Fe 5 – x Ge Te 2 with high Curie temperature and a strong saturation magnetization using photoemission electron microscopy and transport measurements. At 275 K, the ferromagnet transitions to a ferrimagnet, and below 110 K transitions to a state with glassy clusters. These are evidenced from temperature-dependent magnetic stripe domain evolution and anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements. Our findings show a clear magnetic ground state of Fe 5 – x Ge Te 2 at room temperature which signals that Fe 5 – x Ge Te 2 system is a very promising candidate for spintronic devices and provides a material design pathway to further increase the Curie temperature and saturation moments in vdW ferromagnets.
