Thermal control coating Patent

Low concentration alkaline solution treatment of aluminum with metal phosphate surface coatings to improve chemical bonding and reduce coating weight

Wakelyn, N. T.↗

Electrodes for sealed secondary batteries

Self-supporting membrane electrode structures, in which active ingredients and graphite are incorporated in a polymeric matrix, improve performance of electrodes in miniature, sealed, alkaline storage batteries.

Prevention of cathode damage from positive ion bombardment

Mixed alkaline earth oxide compounds deposited into hole at cathode surface center prevent ion back bombardment damage to cathode by reducing oxide layer and by creating metallic diffusion along sides of hole for enhanced electron emission.

Electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction

The performance and costs of an electrochemical catalyst as compared to a pure platinum catalyst is evaluated. The catalysts are used to reduce oxygen in low temperature alkaline fuel cells. The electrochemical catalyst is composed of silver and platinum and is dispersed in a resinous inert binder to provide a cell electrode. The results indicate the electrochemical catalyst is superior structurally to the platinum one for high current density operation, and is at least as active as the platinum catalyst in other operations.

Major and trace element abundances in volcanic rocks of orogenic areas.

The composition of recent island-arc volcanic rocks in relation to their geographic and stratigraphic relations is discussed. The differences in composition between volcanic rocks and those in continental margins are pointed out. Trace elements and major elements are shown to suggest a continuous gradational sequence from tholeiites through calc-alkaline rocks to shoshonites.

Some chemical features of basalts from the British Tertiary Province.

An attempt has been made to chemically characterize the basalts from four islands, Rhum, Eigg, Canna, and Muck that, together with Skye, comprise the Inner Hebrides. The basalts are shown to be chemically distinct from tertiary basalts described from the Faroes and Iceland, but have the low concentrations of Rb, Sr found in some mildly alkaline basalts dredged from the Atlantic. Possible evolution of these rocks is discussed.

Fuel cells and the theory of metals.

Metal theory is used to study the role of metal catalysts in electrocatalysis, with particular reference to alkaline hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells. Use is made of a simple model, analogous to that used to interpret field emission in vacuum. Theoretical values for all the quantities in the Tafel equation are obtained in terms of bulk properties of the metal catalysts (such as free electron densities and Fermi level). The reasons why some processes are reversible (H-electrodes) and some irreversible (O-electrodes) are identified. Selection rules for desirable properties of catalytic materials are established.

Kinetics of carbothermal reduction of quartz under vacuum.

Study of the kinetics of carbothermal reduction of quartz in a batch reactor between 0.25 torr and 1 microtorr. The effects of temperature, CO partial pressure, SiO2 phase transformation, and alkali and alkaline-earth oxide additives on the rate of reaction are reported. The results are consistent with a model based on a transitory phase intermediate.

Stability of human sera collected for clinical chemistry determinations

Problems in collecting and shipping human sera for clinical chemical analyses affect their stability and require proper preservation methods. It is shown that glutamic pyruvate transaminase is very unstable and serum cannot be shipped unless the shipping time is carefully controlled and is less than two days under refrigeration. A limit of four days handling time and avoidance of light exposure are required in bilirubin testing of specimens. Addition of 11 mg of a 10 to 1 mixture of finely powdered sodium fluoride and thymol per ml of blood to preserve specimen stability en route to a central laboratory prevents glycolysis. A citrate buffer at pH 6.2 in serum to be tested for alkaline phosphatase lessens decline at room temperature.

Leak rates in sealed cells.

Water vapor loss rates were determined from simulated and imperfectly sealed alkaline cells in the vacuum environment. The observed rates were found to be in agreement with a semi-empirical equation employed in vacuum technology. Results thereby give support for using this equation for the prediction of loss rates of battery gases and vapors to the aerospace environment. On this basis it was shown how the equation can be applied to the solution of many heretofore unresolved questions regarding leaks in batteries. Among these are the maximum permissible leak size consistent with a given cell life or conversely the maximum life consistent with a given leak size. It was also shown that loss rates of these cells in the terrestrial environment are several orders of magnitude less than the corresponding loss rates in the aerospace environment.

Development and fabrication of sealed silver-zinc cells, phase 1

A facility was designed, constructed and equipped for the production of prismatic alkaline rechargeable battery cells using inorganic (ceramic) separators. This unique facility is environmentally controlled and contains separate areas for electrode fabrication, separator processing, cell assembly, cell finishing and testing. An initial production run of 125 sealed silver zinc cells, using inorganic separators, was made in the facility in order to provide samples for baseline performance tests. Ten of these cells were given performance characterization and life cycle tests.
