Universal construction of black hole microstates

We refine and extend a recent construction of sets of black hole microstates with semiclassical interiors that span a Hilbert space of dimension e S , where S is the black hole entropy. We elaborate on the definition and properties of microstates in statistical and black hole mechanics. The gravitational description of microstates employs matter shells in the interior of the black hole, and we argue that in the limit where the shells are very heavy, the construction acquires universal validity. To this end, we show it for very wide classes of black holes; we first extend the construction to rotating and charged black holes, including extremal and near-extremal solutions, with or without supersymmetry, and we sketch how the construction of microstates can be embedded in string theory. We then describe how the approach can include general quantum corrections, near or far from extremality. For supersymmetric black holes, the microstates we construct differ from other recent constructions in that the interior excitations are not confined within the near-extremal throat. Prospects for exotic h → 4 τ decays in single and di-Higgs boson production at the LHC and future hadron colliders

We study the prospects for observing exotic decays of the Standard Model Higgs boson h into light beyond the Standard Model scalars a with mass m a ≲ m h / 2 in the single Higgs and Higgs pair production channels at the high luminosity run of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Discovery prospects for single Higgs production in the gluon-gluon fusion and vector boson fusion modes with the Higgs boson decaying via the exotic mode h → a a → 4 τ are analyzed at the HL-LHC. The projected sensitivity for exotic Higgs decays in the nonresonant Higgs pair production channel p p → h h → ( h → b b ¯ ) ( h → a a → 4 τ ) → 2 b 4 τ at the HL-LHC and a future s = 100 TeV hadron collider (FCC-hh) are also estimated. Furthermore, we study HL-LHC’s potential reach for the Higgs-strahlung process in the 2 b 4 τ channel, taking into account the contamination from nonresonant Higgs pair production. Finally, the potential reach for resonant Higgs pair production in the 2 b 4 τ channel at the HL-LHC is also explored for several choices of { m H , m a } . Our studies suggest that significant improvements over existing bounds are achievable in several production channels, motivating new dedicated searches for h → a a → 4 τ at the HL-LHC and future colliders. Gravitational form factors of charmonia

We investigate the gravitational form factors of charmonium. Our method is based on a Hamiltonian formalism on the light front known as basis light-front quantization. The charmonium mass spectrum and light-front wave functions were obtained from diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian that incorporates confinement from holographic QCD and one-gluon exchange interaction from light-front QCD. We proposed a quantum many-body approach to construct the hadronic matrix elements of the energy momentum tensor T + + and T + − , which are used to extract the gravitational form factors A ( Q 2 ) and D ( Q 2 ) . The obtained form factors satisfy the known constraints, e.g., the von Laue condition. From these quantities, we also extract the energy, pressure and light-front energy distributions of the system. We find that hadrons are multilayer systems. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Treelike structure of symmetry topological field theories and multisector QFTs

The global symmetries of a D -dimensional quantum field theory (QFT) can, in many cases, be captured in terms of a ( D + 1 )-dimensional symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). In this work we construct a ( D + 1 )-dimensional theory which governs the symmetries of QFTs with multiple sectors which have connected correlators that admit a decoupling limit. The associated symmetry field theory decomposes into a SymTree, namely a treelike structure of SymTFTs fused along possibly nontopological junctions. In string-realized multisector QFTs, these junctions are smoothed out in the extradimensional geometry, as we demonstrate in examples. We further use this perspective to study the fate of higher-form symmetries in the context of holographic large M averaging where the topological sectors of different large M replicas become dressed by additional extended operators associated with the SymTree. b ¯ b ¯ u d and b ¯ b ¯ u s tetraquarks from lattice QCD using symmetric correlation matrices with both local and scattering interpolating operators

We study the b ¯ b ¯ u d tetraquark with quantum numbers I ( J P ) = 0 ( 1 + ) as well as the b ¯ b ¯ u s tetraquark with quantum numbers J P = 1 + using lattice QCD. We improve on existing work by including both local and scattering interpolating operators on both sides of the correlation functions and use symmetric correlation matrices. This allows not only a reliable determination of the energies of QCD-stable tetraquark ground states, but also of low-lying excited states, which are meson-meson scattering states. The latter is particularly important for future finite-volume scattering analyses. Here, we perform chiral and continuum extrapolations of just the ground-state energies, for which finite-volume effects are expected to be small. Our resulting tetraquark binding energies, − 100 ± 10 − 51 + 36 MeV for b ¯ b ¯ u d and − 30 ± 3 − 31 + 11 MeV for b ¯ b ¯ u s , are consistent with other recent lattice-QCD predictions. Gravitational form factors and mechanical properties of quarks in protons: A basis light-front quantization approach

We compute the gravitational form factors (GFFs) and study their applications for the description of the mechanical properties such as the pressure, shear force distributions, and the mechanical radius of the proton from its light-front wave functions (LFWFs) based on basis light-front quantization (BLFQ). The LFWFs of the proton are given by the lowest eigenvector of a light-front effective Hamiltonian that incorporates a three-dimensional confining potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling between the constituent quarks solved in the valence Fock sector. We find acceptable agreement between our BLFQ computations and the lattice QCD for the GFFs. Our D -term form factor also agrees well with the extracted data from the deeply virtual Compton scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab, and the results of different phenomenological models. The distributions of pressures and shear forces are similar to those from different models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

New physics at a neutron beam dump

We find a new utility of neutrons, usually treated as an experimental nuisance causing unwanted background, in probing new physics signals. The new physics signals can either be radiated from neutrons (neutron bremsstrahlung) or appear through secondary particles from neutron-on-target interactions, dubbed “neutron beam dump.” As a concrete example, we take the FASER/FASER2 experiment as a “factory” of high-energy neutrons that interact with the iron dump. We find that if new physics particles had the same interaction strength to protons and neutrons, their production rate via neutron-initiated bremsstrahlung would be comparable to that via proton-initiated ones, in terms of the resulting flux and the range of couplings that can be probed. The neutron bremsstrahlung can be used, for instance, to probe dark gauge bosons with nonzero neutron coupling. In particular, we investigate protophobic gauge bosons and find that FASER/FASER2 can probe new parameter space. We also illustrate the possibility of neutron-induced secondary particles by considering axionlike particles with electron couplings. We conclude that the physics potential of FASER/FASER2 in terms of new physics searches can be greatly extended and improved with the inclusion of neutron interactions. Exploring the impact of high-precision top-quark pair production data on the structure of the proton at the LHC

The impact of recent LHC top-quark pair production single differential cross section measurements at 13 TeV collision energy on the structure of the proton is explored. In particular, the impact of these high-precision data on the gluon and other parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton at intermediate and large partonic momentum fraction x is analyzed. This study extends the CT18 global analysis framework to include these new data. The interplay between top-quark pair and inclusive jet production as well as other processes at the LHC, is studied. In addition, a study of the impact of scale choice on the theory description of the new 13 TeV t t ¯ measurements is performed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Machine learning techniques for intermediate mass gap lepton partner searches at the large hadron collider

We consider machine learning techniques associated with the application of a boosted decision tree (BDT) to searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for pair-produced lepton partners which decay to leptons and invisible particles. This scenario can arise in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), but can be realized in many other extensions of the Standard Model (SM). We focus on the case of intermediate mass splitting ( ∼ 30 GeV ) between the dark matter (DM) and the scalar. For these mass splittings, the LHC has made little improvement over LEP due to large electroweak backgrounds. We find that the use of machine learning techniques can push the LHC well past discovery sensitivity for a benchmark model with a lepton partner mass of ∼ 110 GeV , for an integrated luminosity of 300 fb − 1 , with a signal-to-background ratio of ∼ 0.3 . The LHC could exclude models with a lepton partner mass as large as ∼ 160 GeV with the same luminosity. The use of machine learning techniques in searches for scalar lepton partners at the LHC could thus definitively probe the parameter space of the MSSM in which scalar muon mediated interactions between SM muons and Majorana singlet DM can both deplete the relic density through dark matter annihilation and satisfy the recently measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We identify several machine learning techniques which can be useful in other LHC searches involving large and complex backgrounds. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Neutrino winds on the sky

Abstract We develop a first-principles formalism to compute the distortion to the relic neutrino density field caused by the peculiar motions of large-scale structures. This distortion slows halos down due to dynamical friction, causes a local anisotropy in the neutrino-CDM cross-correlation, and reduces the global cross-correlation between neutrinos and CDM. The local anisotropy in the neutrino-CDM cross-spectrum is imprinted in the three point cross-correlations of matter and galaxies, or the bispectrum in Fourier space, producing a signal peaking at squeezed triangle configurations. This bispectrum signature of neutrino masses is not limited by cosmic variance or potential inaccuracies in the modeling of complicated nonlinear and galaxy formation physics, and it is not degenerate with the optical depth to reionization. We show that future surveys have the potential to detect the distortion bispectrum.

Tree-based algorithms for weakly supervised anomaly detection

Weakly supervised methods have emerged as a powerful tool for model-agnostic anomaly detection at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While these methods have shown remarkable performance on specific signatures such as dijet resonances, their application in a more model-agnostic manner requires dealing with a larger number of potentially noisy input features. In this paper, we show that using boosted decision trees as classifiers in weakly supervised anomaly detection gives superior performance compared to deep neural networks. Boosted decision trees are well known for their effectiveness in tabular data analysis. Our results show that they not only offer significantly faster training and evaluation times, but they are also robust to a large number of noisy input features. By using advanced gradient boosted decision trees in combination with ensembling techniques and an extended set of features, we significantly improve the performance of weakly supervised methods for anomaly detection at the LHC. This advance is a crucial step toward a more model-agnostic search for new physics. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Nucleon axial and pseudoscalar form factors using twisted-mass fermion ensembles at the physical point

We compute the nucleon axial and pseudoscalar form factors using three N f = 2 + 1 + 1 twisted-mass fermion ensembles with all quark masses tuned to approximately their physical values. The values of the lattice spacings of these three physical point ensembles are 0.080, 0.068, and 0.057 fm and spatial sizes 5.1, 5.44, and 5.47 fm, respectively, yielding m π L > 3.6 . Convergence to the ground-state matrix elements is assessed using multistate fits. We study the momentum dependence of the three form factors and check the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) hypothesis and the pion pole dominance (PPD). We show that in the continuum limit, the PCAC and PPD relations are satisfied. We also show that the Goldberger-Treimann relation is approximately fulfilled and determine the Goldberger-Treiman discrepancy. Our final results are g A = 1.245 ( 28 ) ( 14 ) for the nucleon axial charge, ⟨ r A 2 ⟩ = 0.339 ( 48 ) ( 06 ) fm 2 for the axial radius, g π N N ≡ lim Q 2 → − m π 2 G π N N ( Q 2 ) = 13.25 ( 67 ) ( 69 ) for the pion-nucleon coupling constant, and G P ( 0.88 m μ 2 ) ≡ g P * = 8.99 ( 39 ) ( 49 ) for the induced pseudoscalar form factor at the muon capture point. Fuzzy gauge theory for quantum computers

Continuous gauge theories, because of their bosonic degrees of freedom, have an infinite-dimensional local Hilbert space. Encoding these degrees of freedom on qubit-based hardware demands some sort of “qubitization” scheme, where one approximates the behavior of a theory while using only finitely many degrees of freedom. We propose a novel qubitization strategy for gauge theories, called “fuzzy gauge theory,” building on the success of the fuzzy σ -model in earlier work. We provide arguments that the fuzzy gauge theory lies in the same universality class as regular gauge theory, in which case its use would obviate the need of any further limit besides the usual spatial continuum limit. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these models are relatively resource-efficient for quantum simulations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Lattice QCD estimates of thermal photon production from the QGP

Thermal photons produced in heavy-ion collision experiments are an important observable for understanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The thermal photon rate from the QGP at a given temperature can be calculated from the spectral function of the vector current correlator. Extraction of the spectral function from the lattice correlator is known to be an ill-conditioned problem, as there is no unique solution for a spectral function for a given lattice correlator with statistical errors. The vector current correlator, on the other hand, receives a large ultraviolet contribution from the vacuum, which makes the extraction of the thermal photon rate difficult from this channel. We therefore consider the difference between the transverse and longitudinal part of the spectral function, only capturing the thermal contribution to the current correlator, simplifying the reconstruction significantly. The lattice correlator is calculated for light quarks in quenched QCD at T = 470 MeV ( ∼ 1.5 T c ), as well as in 2 + 1 flavor QCD at T = 220 MeV ( ∼ 1.2 T p c ) with m π = 320 MeV . In order to quantify the nonperturbative effects, the lattice correlator is compared with the corresponding NLO + LPM LO estimate of correlator. The reconstruction of the spectral function is performed in several different frameworks, ranging from physics-informed models of the spectral function to more general models in the Backus-Gilbert method and Gaussian process regression. We find that the resulting photon rates agree within errors. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Emergence of 4 H $J^π$ = 1 - resonance in contact theories

We obtain the s- and p-wave low-energy scattering parameters for n 3 H elastic scattering and the position of the 4 H J π = 1 - resonance using the pionless effective field theory at leading order. Results are extracted with three numerical techniques: confining the system in a harmonic oscillator trap, solving the Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations in configuration space, and using an effective two-body cluster approach. The renormalization of the theory for the relevant amplitudes is assessed in a cutoff-regulator range between 1 fm -1 and 10 fm -1 . Most remarkably, we find a cutoff-stable/RG-invariant resonance in the 4 H J π = 1 - system. This p-wave resonance is a universal consequence of a shallow two-body state and the introduction of a three-body s-wave scale set by the triton binding energy. The stabilization of a resonant state in a few-fermion system through pure contact interactions has a significant consequence for the powercounting of the pionless theory. Specifically, it suggests the appearance of similar resonant states also in larger nuclei, like 16-oxygen, in which the theory’s leading order does not predict stable states. Those resonances would provide a starting state to be moved to the correct physical position by the perturbative insertion of sub-leading orders, possibly resolving the discrepancy between data and contact EFT.

Nonperturbative running of the tensor operator for N f = 3 QCD from the chirally rotated Schrödinger functional

We study the renormalization group (RG) running of the nonsinglet tensor operator, for N f = 3 QCD with Wilson fermions in a mixed action setup, with standard Schrödinger functional (SF) boundary conditions for sea quarks and chirally rotated Schrödinger functional ( χ SF ) boundary conditions for valence quarks. Based on a recursive finite-size scaling technique we compute nonperturbatively the tensor step-scaling function for an energy range between a hadronic scale and an electroweak scale, above which perturbation theory may be safely applied. Our result is expressed as the RG-running factor T RGI / [ T ( μ had ) ] R , where the numerator is the scale independent (renormalization group invariant—RGI) tensor operator and the denominator is its renormalized counterpart at a hadronic scale μ had = 233 ( 8 ) MeV in a given scheme. We determine the step-scaling function in four distinct renormalization schemes. We also compute the renormalization parameters of these schemes at μ had which, combined with the RG-running factor, gives the scheme-independent quantity Z T RGI ( g 0 2 ) in four schemes and for a range of bare gauge couplings in which large volume hadronic matrix element simulations are performed by the CLS consortium in N f = 2 + 1 QCD. All four results are compatible and also agree with a recent determination based on a unitary setup for Wilson quarks with Schrödinger functional boundary conditions [arXiv:2309.04314]. This provides a strong universality test. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Inflation alternative via the gravitational field of a singularity

Abstract We explore the scenario that the observable Universe emerged from the vicinity of a negative mass ring singularity, and all content of the Universe travels at the same group velocity close to the speed of light on a geodesic trajectory along the axis of rotation of the singularity. In appropriate coordinate parametrization and evaluated on the trajectory, we find that the metric tensor in the vicinity of the trajectory exhibits a conformal scale factor a ( η ) with contraction and subsequent expansion properties that solve the horizon problem. We then introduce a static flow of gravitating radiation along the trajectory (perturbatively with respect to the mass scale of the singularity) to model a homogeneous radiation dominated Universe. Solving the Einstein field equations with a physically motivated ansatz of metric perturbation then reveals that the effective conformal scale factor indeed grows asymptotically with the same power law as expected in a conventional radiation dominated Universe.
