North Slope of Alaska XSAPR b1 Data Processing Report: April 2024-April 2025

The North Slope of Alaska (NSA) atmospheric observatory, operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility, is a measurement site in the Arctic that has been collecting crucial atmospheric data for more than 25 years. The central facility located in Utqiaġvik, Alaska (formerly known as Barrow) hosts a suite of instruments that are used to better understand arctic processes, which are often not well represented in earth system models. The NSA site sits only a few kilometers from the Arctic Ocean, which also makes it a prime location to study complex ocean-atmosphere-ice interactions. Arctic cloud and precipitation processes are also of scientific interest, and remote-sensing instruments including radars are a key component of the NSA instrument suite. One of the radars at NSA is the X-band Scanning ARM Precipitation Radar (XSAPR). This report evaluates one year of recent XSAPR data from April 2024 through April 2025 and details the process of generating b1-level data. This analysis marks the first effort by ARM staff to quality-control NSA XSAPR data with the goal of routinely producing b1-level data in the future depending on radar operations.

The Pilot Land Data System: Report of the Program Planning Workshops

An advisory report to be used by NASA in developing a program plan for a Pilot Land Data System (PLDS) was developed. The purpose of the PLDS is to improve the ability of NASA and NASA sponsored researchers to conduct land-related research. The goal of the planning workshops was to provide and coordinate planning and concept development between the land related science and computer science disciplines, to discuss the architecture of the PLDs, requirements for information science technology, and system evaluation. The findings and recommendations of the Working Group are presented. The pilot program establishes a limited scale distributed information system to explore scientific, technical, and management approaches to satisfying the needs of the land science community. The PLDS paves the way for a land data system to improve data access, processing, transfer, and analysis, which land sciences information synthesis occurs on a scale not previously permitted because of limits to data assembly and access.

Computational modeling of cardiovascular response to orthostatic stress

The objective of this study is to develop a model of the cardiovascular system capable of simulating the short-term (< or = 5 min) transient and steady-state hemodynamic responses to head-up tilt and lower body negative pressure. The model consists of a closed-loop lumped-parameter representation of the circulation connected to set-point models of the arterial and cardiopulmonary baroreflexes. Model parameters are largely based on literature values. Model verification was performed by comparing the simulation output under baseline conditions and at different levels of orthostatic stress to sets of population-averaged hemodynamic data reported in the literature. On the basis of experimental evidence, we adjusted some model parameters to simulate experimental data. Orthostatic stress simulations are not statistically different from experimental data (two-sided test of significance with Bonferroni adjustment for multiple comparisons). Transient response characteristics of heart rate to tilt also compare well with reported data. A case study is presented on how the model is intended to be used in the future to investigate the effects of post-spaceflight orthostatic intolerance.

2024 Buildings Technology Baseline: Dataset Documentation

The Buildings Technology Baseline is a curated and regularly updated dataset of current and projected performance, retail, and installed price data for all major building energy technologies needed to enable cost/benefit analyses. Building technology analyses require an up-to-date understanding of installation costs and cost-effectiveness of key building energy efficiency technologies. The dataset was assembled by Guidehouse during fiscal year 2024. Data was gathered from the 2024 National Residential Efficiency Measures Database (NREMDB), the 2023 Energy Information Administration Updated Buildings Sector Appliance and Equipment Costs and Efficiencies ("EIA Building Data Report"), DOE Lighting Market Model, the 2023 RSMeans database, and the 2020 Grid-Interactive Efficient Building Technology Cost, Performance, and Lifetime Characteristics ("GEB Data Report"), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, various literature, as well as new data from online retailers, stakeholder interviews, and contractor databases in 2023 and 2024. The dataset has been reviewed by subject matter experts at NREL and DOE. The 2024 dataset release is intended to be a starting point for interested users to provide feedback. This database is not intended to provide specific cost estimates for a specific project. The cost estimates do not include any rebates or tax incentives that may be available for the measures. Rather, it is meant to help determine which measures may be more cost-effective. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) makes every effort to ensure accuracy of the data; however, NREL does not assume any legal liability or responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of the information.

Automatic Generation of Algorithms for High-Speed Reliable Lossy Data Compression (Final Report)

Fast reliable data compression is urgently needed for many leading-edge scientific instruments and for exascale high-performance computing applications because they produce vast amounts of data at extremely high rates. The goal of this project has been to develop a framework named LC that is able to automatically generate high-speed lossless and reliable lossy compression and decompression algorithms that can be customized for different kinds of data. The resulting LC framework is freely available on GitHub. To achieve high-speed operation, LC outputs optimized and parallelized CPU and GPU implementations of the generated algorithms. To ensure the quality of lossily compressed data, LC guarantees the user-provided error bound. To be able to customize the compression algorithm to various use cases, LC can synthesize millions of different algorithms and automatically search for the one that works best for the given data. We have already employed LC to create state-of-the-art lossless and lossy compressors for scientific data as well as leading lossless compressors for images. We hope that LC and the customized, fast, reliable, and CPU/GPU-compatible compression algorithms that it can generate will greatly benefit the many scientific applications that need not only high trustworthiness but also high performance.
