Harnessing ionic complexity: A modeling approach for hierarchical ionic circuit design

Since the 1950s, soft ionic devices have evolved from individual components to an expanding library of sensors, actuators, signal transmitters, and processors. However, integrating these components into complex, multifunctional systems remains challenging due to the nonintuitive and nonlinear interactions between ionic elements. In this work, we address these fundamental challenges by developing a lumped element model that enables interrogation of the physics that governs ionic circuits, as well as rapid design and optimization. Our model captures features specific to ionic charge carriers, while preserving the hierarchical design flexibility and computational efficiency of traditional circuit modeling. We demonstrate that our model can not only fit individual device behavior but also accurately predict the behavior of larger circuits formed by combining those devices. Additionally, we show how our tool utilizes the intrinsic nonlinearities of ionic systems to enable extended functionality, revealing how factors such as ion enrichment, ion leakage, and polymer charge density influence performance. Lastly, we present a fully ionic power supply, sensor, control system, and actuator for a soft robot that adapts its motion in response to environmental salt, illustrating the tool’s potential to accelerate advancements in chemical sensing, biointerfacing, biomimetic systems, and adaptive materials.

Full-Field Strain Measurement Integrated with Two Dimension Regression Analysis to Evaluate the Bi-Modulus Elastic Properties of Isotropic and Transversely Isotropic Materials

Background: Measuring the physical properties of shale is critical for optimizing engineering activities such as geothermal energy generation and hydraulic fracturing. Shale is a transversely isotropic material. Furthermore, this material can also include micro and macro cracks at different locations and orientations that cause it to behave differently under tensile or compressive loading. Objective: In this work, a combined experimental–numerical approach is proposed to evaluate the bi-modulus elastic properties of isotropic and transversely isotropic materials. Methods: Full-field strain measurements for a circular disk under diametral compression are integrated with a regression analysis technique to evaluate the elastic properties of bi-modulus materials subjected to tensile and compressive loads using two loading configurations on the same specimen. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is used to measure the full-field strains. Subsequently, in the case of an isotropic material, a linear least-squares approach is utilized to process the experimentally determined strains in conjunction with analytical expressions of the stress fields (in terms of far-field loading) to determine the elastic modulus E, the shear modulus G, and the Poisson’s ratio $v$. In the case of a transversely isotopic material, such as shale, a finite element model is implemented to determine the stress fields (again in terms of far-field loading), which is followed by repeating the previous regression analysis in an iterative process to estimate the elastic parameters. Results: The results show that the proposed technique successfully provides a complete set of elastic properties as a function of both the loading condition and the principal material directions. The technique is validated by measurements on a known isotropic material and then applied to determine the properties of shale. Conclusion: In this work, the proposed approach is successfully used to calculate the bi-modulus elastic response of poly(methyl meth- acrylate) (PMMA) and shale. As expected, PMMA exhibits an isotropic response with no bi-modulus effect, however, shale exhibits both transverse isotropy and a bi-modulus effect. Therefore, this approach holds promise for investigating the elastic properties of materials like rocks and fiber-reinforced composite laminates as functions of the principal material directions and the loading conditions.

High-Fidelity Modeling of a Type-5 Wind Turbine Gearbox (Intern Poster) [Poster]

Type-5 wind turbines are unique in their use of a permanent magnet synchronous generator, as well as their use of a hydraulic torque converter. This architecture presents an opportunity to provide steady and grid-ready energy without the need for a power converter. With infrastructure continuity and reliability being an important topic amongst renewable energies, researchers have been prompted to further investigate the benefits of type-5 turbines’ unique electromechanical configuration on stable electricity generation. Researchers involved in the WindSG project, SG standing for synchronous generator, are aiming to model a type-5 turbine using Real Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) to evaluate its efficacy in the grid. RSCAD, the software run on the RTDS, comes pre-loaded with electrical and electromechanical components to help simulate electrical generation and grid conditions. However, within this repertoire there is a lack of a component to represent a gearbox with high-fidelity. Within RSCAD’s case studies, the gearbox is often represented simply by a gear ratio value. This presented the task of developing a high-fidelity gearbox model in RSCAD for use in the larger RTDS type-5 wind turbine model. This poster describes a method of developing a lumped parameter mathematical model to represent a planetary-parallel-parallel gearbox in RSCAD for use in RTDS.

Advanced Data Science Model for Detecting Intelligent Malware

This study focused on developing a robust artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of detecting and characterizing advanced malware in Internet of Things (IoT) devices using network data. By analyzing network traffic with various machine learning (ML) models, our AI model can identify and characterize malicious activities to significantly improve malware detection accuracy and reliability as compared to traditional methods. The developed AI/ML model was trained using network data from IoT devices, leveraging classifiers such as Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, AdaBoost, and others to optimize detection performance. This project demonstrates a scalable framework for real-time malware detection and characterization in IoT networks, capable of identifying infected devices and facilitating the necessary steps to remove or isolate them, thereby preventing further infections. Although digital twin (DT) integration is not yet implemented in the current model, it represents a promising future enhancement. By creating a virtual replica of physical IoT devices, DT technology would allow for real-time monitoring and analysis without directly accessing operational technology, thus reducing the risk of compromising or reducing the performance of actual devices. This integration would further enhance the security of IoT ecosystems, combining AI technology to better flag and detect indications of malware-infected devices within a nuclear system environment.
