Integrated flight/propulsion control - Adaptive engine control system mode

The adaptive engine control system mode (ADECS) which is developed and tested on an F-15 aircraft with PW1128 engines, using the NASA sponsored highly integrated digital electronic control program, is examined. The operation of the ADECS mode, as well as the basic control logic, the avionic architecture, and the airframe/engine interface are described. By increasing engine pressure ratio (EPR) additional thrust is obtained at intermediate power and above. To modulate the amount of EPR uptrim and to prevent engine stall, information from the flight control system is used. The performance benefits, anticipated from control integration are shown for a range of flight conditions and power settings. It is found that at higher altitudes, the ADECS mode can increase thrust as much as 12 percent, which is used for improved acceleration, improved turn rate, or sustained turn angle.

Modeling digital control systems with MA-prefiltered measurements

Three discrete state variable representations are derived for a continuous-time plant driven by a zero-order-hold with a combination of instantaneous measurements and measurements prefiltered by moving-average (MA) digital filters. These representations allow the control system engineer to accurately model plants of this type in a form which permits him to use standard techniques to design digital feedback controllers for them. An example is presented which illustrates how to obtain the coefficient matrices in each representation. Guidelines are presented for choosing the best representation to use for any given point.

HIDEC F-15 adaptive engine control system flight test results

NASA-Ames' Highly Integrated Digital Electronic Control (HIDEC) flight test program aims to develop fully integrated airframe, propulsion, and flight control systems. The HIDEC F-15 adaptive engine control system flight test program has demonstrated that significant performance improvements are obtainable through the retention of stall-free engine operation throughout the aircraft flight and maneuver envelopes. The greatest thrust increase was projected for the medium-to-high altitude flight regime at subsonic speed which is of such importance to air combat. Adaptive engine control systems such as the HIDEC F-15's can be used to upgrade the performance of existing aircraft without resort to expensive reengining programs.

Reliability modeling of fault-tolerant computer based systems

Digital fault-tolerant computer-based systems have become commonplace in military and commercial avionics. These systems hold the promise of increased availability, reliability, and maintainability over conventional analog-based systems through the application of replicated digital computers arranged in fault-tolerant configurations. Three tightly coupled factors of paramount importance, ultimately determining the viability of these systems, are reliability, safety, and profitability. Reliability, the major driver affects virtually every aspect of design, packaging, and field operations, and eventually produces profit for commercial applications or increased national security. However, the utilization of digital computer systems makes the task of producing credible reliability assessment a formidable one for the reliability engineer. The root of the problem lies in the digital computer's unique adaptability to changing requirements, computational power, and ability to test itself efficiently. Addressed here are the nuances of modeling the reliability of systems with large state sizes, in the Markov sense, which result from systems based on replicated redundant hardware and to discuss the modeling of factors which can reduce reliability without concomitant depletion of hardware. Advanced fault-handling models are described and methods of acquiring and measuring parameters for these models are delineated.

Development of HIDEC adaptive engine control systems

The purpose of NASA's Highly Integrated Digital Electronic Control (HIDEC) flight research program is the development of integrated flight propulsion control modes, and the evaluation of their benefits aboard an F-15 test aircraft. HIDEC program phases are discussed, with attention to the Adaptive Engine Control System (ADECS I); this involves the upgrading of PW1128 engines for operation at higher engine pressure ratios and the production of greater thrust. ADECS II will involve the development of a constant thrust mode which will significantly reduce turbine operating temperatures.

The 3SPACE digitizer: A new input device for solid geometry modeling

The 3SPACE Digitizer is a derivation of SPASYN, which is a patented magnetic transducing system offering an accurate method of calculating the location of one object relative to another. SPASYN uses low-frequency magnetic fields to measure both the position and orientation of its sensor relative to its transmitter. The 3SPACE Digitizer unit consists of a system's electronics unit, a model table, a stylus, and a keypad. In operation, the 3SPACE Digitizer determines the X, Y, Z coordinates of any point located on a low-conductive, three-dimensional model. This data, along with the orientation of the Digitizer's stylus, is immediately available for transmission to a host computer or graphics terminal. Digitization is effected by touching the point to be measured with the tip of a handheld stylus. The 3SPACE Digitizer presents new opportunities for interacting with computers in a large number of engineering and scientific applications. Developed from proven military technology, the 3SPACE Digitizer significantly simplifies three-dimensional digitization and overcomes many of the problems that once plagued such procedures. Its ability to digitize solid objects makes it a valuable new tool for computer-aided design and manufacturing.

Coordination and establishment of centralized facilities and services for the University of Alaska ERTS survey of the Alaskan environment

The author has identified the following significant results. Specifications have been prepared for the engineering design and construction of a digital color display unit which will be used for automatic processing of ERTS data. The color display unit is a disk refresh memory with computer interfaced input and a color cathode ray tube output display. The system features both analog and digital post disk data manipulation and a versatile color coding device suitable for displaying not only images, but also computer generated graphics such as diagrams, maps, and overlays. Input is from IBM compatible 9 track, 800 BPI tapes, as generated by an IBM 360 computer. ERTS digital tapes are read into the 360, where various analyses such as maximum likelihood classification are performed and the results are written on a magnetic tape which is the input to the color display unit. The greatest versatility in the data manipulation area is provided by the minicomputer built into the color display unit, which is off-line from the main 360 computer. The minicomputer is able to read any line from the refresh disk and place it in its 4K-16 bit memory. Considerable flexibility is available for post-processing enhancement of images by the investigator.

A real time Pegasus propulsion system model for VSTOL piloted simulation evaluation

A real time propulsion system modeling technique suitable for use in man-in-the-loop simulator studies was developd. This technique provides the system accuracy, stability, and transient response required for integrated aircraft and propulsion control system studies. A Pegasus-Harrier propulsion system was selected as a baseline for developing mathematical modeling and simulation techniques for VSTOL. Initially, static and dynamic propulsion system characteristics were modeled in detail to form a nonlinear aerothermodynamic digital computer simulation of a Pegasus engine. From this high fidelity simulation, a real time propulsion model was formulated by applying a piece-wise linear state variable methodology. A hydromechanical and water injection control system was also simulated. The real time dynamic model includes the detail and flexibility required for the evaluation of critical control parameters and propulsion component limits over a limited flight envelope. The model was programmed for interfacing with a Harrier aircraft simulation. Typical propulsion system simulation results are presented.

A simulation study of the low-speed characteristics of a light twin with an engine-out

Potential safety advantages provided by the two engines on a light twin aircraft are not realized in practice as evidenced by recent engine-failure accident statistics. These statistics showed twice the fatality rate from engine failure for twins as for single-engine aircraft. The statistics showed also that one-half of the fatal engine-out accidents involved a stall. An improvement of the low-speed engine-out characteristics is, therefore, needed. An investigation of the engine-out characteristics of light twin-engine aircraft is currently being conducted as part of the comprehensive stall/spin program for general aviation aircraft. The present study is concerned with the first phase of this program. The primary objective of this study is to advance the understanding of the basic flight dynamics and piloting problems for an engine-out condition. An all-digital computer system was used in the conducted simulation study.

An interactive computer graphics environment was used for nonlinear constrained optimization analysis. It is found that by combining the power of a digital computer with the subtlety of engineering judgment during program execution, final results can be substantially better than the ones achieved by the numerical algorithm by itself.
