A neural network-based approach to predicting absorption in nanostructured, disordered photoelectrodes

Disordered nanostructures in photoelectrodes can increase light absorption in photoelectrochemical system designs. Predicting their optical properties is an elusive task due to the immensity of unique configurations and the intrinsic variance of each. A neural network trained from a small subset of simulations can emulate the complex absorption properties of the entire configuration space for a model disordered system with quantifiable accuracy and computational efficiency.

Pressure-induced order–disorder transitions in β-In 2 S 3 : an experimental and theoretical study of structural and vibrational properties

We report this joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural and vibrational properties of β-In 2 S 3 upon compression shows that this tetragonal defect spinel undergoes two reversible pressure-induced order–disorder transitions up to 20 GPa. We propose that the first high-pressure phase above 5.0 GPa has the cubic defect spinel structure of α-In 2 S 3 and the second high-pressure phase ($\phi$-In 2 S 3 ) above 10.5 GPa has a defect α-NaFeO 2 -type (R$\bar{3}$) structure. This phase, related to the NaCl structure, has not been previously observed in spinels under compression and is related to both the tetradymite structure of topological insulators and to the defect LiTiO 2 phase observed at high pressure in other thiospinels. Structural characterization of the three phases shows that α-In 2 S 3 is softer than β-In 2 S 3 while $\phi$-In 2 S 3 is harder than β-In 2 S 3 . Vibrational characterization of the three phases is also provided, and their Raman-active modes are tentatively assigned. Our work shows that the metastable α phase of In 2 S 3 can be accessed not only by high temperature or varying composition, but also by high pressure. On top of that, the pressure-induced β–α–$\phi$ sequence of phase transitions evidences that β-In 2 S 3 , a B III 2 X V 3 compound with an intriguing structure typical of A II B III 2 X VI 4 compounds (intermediate between thiospinels and ordered-vacancy compounds) undergoes: (i) a first phase transition at ambient pressure to a disordered spinel-type structure (α-In 2 S 3 ), isostructural with those found at high pressure and high temperature in other B III 2 X V 3 compounds; and (ii) a second phase transition to the defect α-NaFeO 2 -type structure ($\phi$-In 2 S 3 ), a distorted NaCl-type structure that is related to the defect NaCl phase found at high pressure in A II B III 2 X VI 4 ordered-vacancy compounds and to the defect LiTiO 2 -type phase found at high pressure in A II B III 2 X VI 4 thiospinels. This result shows that In 2 S 3 (with its intrinsic vacancies) has a similar pressure behaviour to thiospinels and ordered-vacancy compounds of the A II B III 2 X VI 4 family, making β-In 2 S 3 the union link between such families of compounds and showing that group-13 thiospinels have more in common with ordered-vacancy compounds than with oxospinels and thiospinels with transition metals.

Enhancing exciton diffusion by reducing energy disorder in organic solar cells

A highly crystalline, highly emissive, and wide-bandgap polymer AC174 with an extremely small Stokes shift is designed and synthesized in water, and is used to reduce system energetic disorder and increase the exciton diffusion length of the classical PM6:Y6 blend system. AC174 is incompatible with PM6 and Y6, improves molecular packing, and reduces system energetic disorder. The long-range Förster resonance energy transfer between the donor and acceptor is enhanced, and the exciton diffusion constant and exciton lifetime are increased, leading to a longer exciton diffusion length and more efficient exciton dissociation and charge generation. The addition of AC174 simultaneously improves the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density (J SC ) and fill factor of PM6:Y6 devices; especially the highest internal quantum efficiency approaches 100%, and the highest J SC is 28.4 mA cm –2 . Ternary devices with 5% AC174 in the donors achieve a power conversion efficiency of 17.2%, higher than those of the parent binary devices based on PM6:Y6 (15.9%) and AC174:Y6 (3.24%).

Ab initio study of short-range ordering in vanadium-based disordered rocksalt structures

Disordered rocksalt Li-excess (DRX) compounds are attractive new cathode materials for Li-ion batteries as they contain resource-abundant metals and do not require the use of cobalt or nickel. Understanding the delithiation process and cation short-range ordering (SRO) in DRX compounds is essential to improve these promising cathode materials. Herein, we use first-principles calculations along with the cluster-expansion approach to model the disorder in DRX Li 2-x VO 3 , 0 < x < 1. We discuss the SRO of Li in tetrahedral and octahedral sites, and the order in which Li delithiates and V oxidizes with respect to local environments. We reveal that the number of nearest-neighbor V dictates the order of delithiation from octahedral sites and that V is oxidized in a manner that minimizes the electrostatic interactions among V. In conclusion, our results provide valuable insight for tailoring the performance of V-based DRX cathode materials in general by controlling the SRO features that reduce energy density.

Structural regulation-induced Li-electron disentanglement for stabilized oxygen redox of Li-excess disordered rock-salt cathode materials

Since the discovery of its electrochemical activity, Li-excess disordered rock-salt (DRX) cathode material has received worldwide attention as it sets up a new way to exploit oxygen redox beyond the conventional layered structure with late-3d transition metals. However, the intricate structure-function relationship in the disordered lattice of the DRX material fogs the researcher's lens on the underlying redox mechanisms. Here, in this study, we employ a synergistic approach combining neutron total scattering with reverse Monte Carlo modeling and density functional theory calculations to unravel the landscape of oxygen redox reactions in DRX. Redox activities are evaluated in diverse oxygen clusters (OLi x TM 6-x ) and the spatial distribution of these clusters in the model DRX structure (Li 1.16 Ti 0.37 Ni 0.37 Nb 0.1 O 2 and Li 1.2 Ti 0.35 Ni 0.35 Nb 0.1 O 1.8 F 0.2 ) is explicitly determined. The results unveil that by regulating the short-range ordering between cations, fluorine atoms can effectively decouple the location of Li extraction and electron depletion. Such disentanglement between the Li reservoir and electron reservoir in the DRX lattice could play a pivotal role in protecting the oxidized oxygen and preserving the lattice framework during cycling. Through a tentatively designed non-fluorinated DRX oxide realizing similar Li-electron decoupling, an obvious enhancement of the cycling capability can be achieved without compromising the capacity release.

Linking structural and rheological memory in disordered soft materials

Linking the macroscopic flow properties and nanoscopic structure is a fundamental challenge to understanding, predicting, and designing disordered soft materials. Under small stresses, these materials are soft solids, while larger loads can lead to yielding and the acquisition of plastic strain, which adds complexity to the task. In this work, we connect the transient structure and rheological memory of a colloidal gel under cyclic shearing across a range of amplitudes via a generalized memory function using rheo-X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (rheo-XPCS). Our rheo-XPCS data show that the nanometer scale aggregate-level structure recorrelates whenever the change in recoverable strain over some interval is zero. The macroscopic recoverable strain is therefore a measure of the nano-scale structural memory. We further show that yielding in disordered colloidal materials is strongly heterogeneous and that memories of prior deformation can exist even after the material has been subjected to flow.

Asymmetric linker generates intrinsically disordered metal–organic framework with local MOF-74 structure

Here, we report an intrinsically disordered MOF in the MOF-74 family, Mg 2−x (as-dobpdc) (as-dobpdc 4− = 3′,4-dioxidobiphenyl-3,4′-dicarboxylate). Despite the absence of crystallinity, this material exhibits local ordering consistent with that of its crystalline isomers, maintains porosity, and exhibits a high density of open metal sites. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are typically valued for their combination of crystallinity, porosity, and tunability. However, amorphous MOFs can retain local order while introducing advantages, such as broader distribution of active sites types, reduced thermal conductivity, and emergent modes of tunability via control over the type of disorder. Conventional amorphization strategies rely on external stimuli including pressure, temperature, stress, electrical discharge, or fast precipitation. Recently, amorphous MOFs have been accessed directly using low symmetry organic linkers.

Impact of the d 0 transition metal on local structural transformations in disordered rock salt cathodes

Although it is widely accepted that the long-range (average) crystal structure plays a critical role in determining the electrochemical performance of battery materials, the relationship between local structural features and electrochemical performance is rarely studied. Disordered rock salt oxides (DRX), which have become serious contenders for next generation Li-ion electrode materials, provide an ideal platform for exploring correlations between local structure and electrochemical performance as they exhibit a simple face-centered cubic structure and combine long-range disorder and short-range order on the cation sublattice. This work examines the Li 1.1 Mn 0.7 Zr 0.2−x Ti x O 2 series of DRX cathodes and investigates the links between local structure rearrangements and capacity activation. The end-member Li 1.1 Mn 0.7 Zr 0.2 O 2 compound exhibits a low capacity in the as-synthesized state, attributed to unfavorable short-range order that hinders Li-ion transport, yet its capacity increases seven-fold, from 20 to 140 mAh g −1 , after chemical delithiation followed by a 400 °C heat treatment. Capacity activation is associated with the appearance of local spinel-like structural features that depart from the short-range order originally present in the material, without significant change to the bulk composition and average crystal structure. Investigation of a series of Li 1.1 Mn 0.7 Zr 0.2−x Ti x O 2 (x ≤ 0.2) DRX compounds reveals that the correlation length of the spinel-like ordering that emerges during the heat treatment strongly depends on the Zr : Ti ratio. Yet, dramatic capacity activation and electrochemical (pseudo-)plateaus reminiscent of Mn-based spinel cathodes are observed for all compounds irrespective of the size of the ordered domains. To explain this phenomenon, we propose that the DRX phase undergoes a complete transformation to a spinel-like domain structure, which improves bulk Li-ion transport regardless of domain size.

On the new universality class in structurally disordered n -vector model with long-range interactions

We study a stability boundary of a region where nontrivial critical behavior of an n-vector model with long-range power-law decaying interactions is induced by the presence of a structural disorder (e.g., weak quenched dilution). This boundary is given by the marginal dimension of the order parameter nc dependent on space dimension, d, and a control parameter of the interaction decay, σ, below which the model belongs to the new dilution-induced universality class. Exploiting the Harris criterion and recent field theoretical renormalization group results for the pure model with long-range interactions, we get nc as a three loop ɛ = 2σ – d-expansion. We provide numerical values for nc applying series resummation methods. Our results show that not only the Ising systems (n = 1) can belong to the new disorder-induced long-range universality class at d = 2 and 3.

Tuning perovskite nanocrystal superlattices for superradiance in the presence of disorder

The cooperative emission of interacting nanocrystals is an exciting topic fueled by recent reports of superfluorescence and superradiance in assemblies of perovskite nanocubes. Several studies estimated that coherent coupling is localized to a small fraction of nanocrystals (10 -7 –10 -3 ) within the assembly, raising questions about the origins of localization and ways to overcome it. In this work, we examine single-excitation superradiance by calculating radiative decays and the distribution of superradiant wave function in two-dimensional CsPbBr 3 nanocube superlattices. The calculations reveal that the energy disorder caused by size distribution and large interparticle separations reduces radiative coupling and leads to the excitation localization, with the energy disorder being the dominant factor. The single-excitation model clearly predicts that, in the pursuit of cooperative effects, having identical nanocubes in the superlattice is more important than achieving a perfect spatial order. The monolayers of large CsPbBr 3 nanocubes (L NC = 10–20 nm) are proposed as model systems for experimental tests of superradiance under conditions of non-negligible size dispersion, while small nanocubes (L NC = 5–10 nm) are preferred for realizing the Dicke state under ideal conditions.

Out of time order correlation of the Hubbard model with random local disorder

The out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) serves as a powerful tool for investigating quantum information spreading and chaos in complex systems. We present a method employing non-equilibrium dynamical mean-field theory and coherent potential approximation combined with diagrammatic perturbation on the Schwinger–Keldysh contour to calculate the OTOC for correlated fermionic systems subjected to both random disorder and electron interaction. Furthermore, our key finding is that random disorder enhances the OTOC decay in the Hubbard model for the metallic phase in the weakly interacting limit. However, the current limitation of our perturbative solver restricts the applicability to weak interaction regimes.

B56$δ$ long-disordered arms form a dynamic PP2A regulation interface coupled with global allostery and Jordan’s syndrome mutations

Intrinsically disordered regions (IDR) and short linear motifs (SLiMs) play pivotal roles in the intricate signaling networks governed by phosphatases and kinases. B56δ (encoded by PPP2R5D) is a regulatory subunit of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) with long IDRs that harbor a substrate-mimicking SLiM and multiple phosphorylation sites. De novo missense mutations in PPP2R5D cause intellectual disabilities (ID), macrocephaly, Parkinsonism, and a broad range of neurological symptoms. Our single-particle cryo-EM structures of the PP2A-B56δ holoenzyme reveal that the long, disordered arms at the B56δ termini fold against each other and the holoenzyme core. This architecture suppresses both the phosphatase active site and the substrate-binding protein groove, thereby stabilizing the enzyme in a closed latent form with dual autoinhibition. The resulting interface spans over 190 Å and harbors unfavorable contacts, activation phosphorylation sites, and nearly all residues with ID-associated mutations. Our studies suggest that this dynamic interface is coupled to an allosteric network responsive to phosphorylation and altered globally by mutations. Furthermore, we found that ID mutations increase the holoenzyme activity and perturb the phosphorylation rates, and the severe variants significantly increase the mitotic duration and error rates compared to the normal variant.

The chromatin remodeler ADNP regulates neurodevelopmental disorder risk genes and neocortical neurogenesis

Although chromatin remodelers are among the most important risk genes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), the roles of these complexes during brain development are in many cases unclear. Here, we focused on the recently discovered ChAHP chromatin remodeling complex. The zinc finger and homeodomain transcription factor ADNP is a core subunit of this complex, and de novoADNPmutations lead to intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. However, germlineAdnpknockout mice were previously shown to exhibit early embryonic lethality, obscuring subsequent roles for the ChAHP complex in neurogenesis. To circumvent this early developmental arrest, we generated a conditionalAdnpmutant allele. Using single-cell transcriptomics, cut&run-seq, and histological approaches, we show that during neocortical development, Adnp orchestrates the production of late-born, upper-layer neurons through a two-step process. First, Adnp is required to sustain progenitor proliferation specifically during the developmental window for upper-layer cortical neurogenesis. Accordingly, we found that Adnp recruits the ChAHP subunit Chd4 to genes associated with progenitor proliferation. Second, in postmitotic differentiated neurons, we define a network of risk genes linked to NDDs that are regulated by Adnp and Chd4. Taken together, these data demonstrate that ChAHP is critical for driving the expansion of upper-layer cortical neurons and for regulating neuronal gene expression programs, suggesting that these processes may potentially contribute to NDD etiology.

Disorder and Itinerant Magnetism in Full Heusler Pd 2 TiIn

We report electronic and magnetic properties of full Heusler Pd 2 TiIn based on first principles calculations. This compound has been variously characterized as magnetic or non-magnetic. We use first principles calculations with accurate methods to reexamine this issue. We find that ideal ordered Heusler Pd 2 TiIn remains non-magnetic, in accord with prior work. Furthermore, we do find that it is possible to explain the magnetism seen in experiments through disorder and in particular we find that site disorder can lead to moment formation in this compound. In addition, we find an alternative low energy cubic crystal structure, which will be of interest to explore experimentally.

Substantial reduction of the anisotropy in the critical current densities J c of Ni-doped CaKFe 4 As 4 single crystals by chemical and irradiation-induced disorder

Here, we demonstrate that the anisotropy in the critical current densities, J c , of CaK(Fe 1–x Ni x ) 4 As 4 (x = 0, 0.015, 0.025, and 0.030) single crystals reduces with increasing chemical and irradiation-induced disorder. The magnetic field dependences of J c are analyzed by performing magnetization measurements with H applied parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis. The results show that undoped crystals display large anisotropies in Jc due to an enhancement of the vortex pinning with H applied parallel to the crystallographic ab-planes. This anisotropy reduces substantially as Ni addition increases. Moreover, we found that random disorder introduced by proton irradiation enhances mainly the vortex pinning for H parallel to the c-axis. Consequently, using adequate fluencies, the vortex pinning at low temperatures in both undoped and doped samples becomes close to isotropic. These results make the CaKFe 4 As 4 system promising for applications that require isotropic J c under magnetic fields.
