A modified quadrupole mass spectrometer with custom RF link rods driver for remote operation

A commercial quadrupole residual gas analyzer system has been upgraded for operation at extended cable lengths. Operation inside a vacuum chamber for the standard quadrupole nude head is limited to approximately 2 m from its externally located rf/dc generator because of the detuning of the rf oscillator circuits by the coaxial cable reactance. The advance of long distance remote operation inside a vacuum chamber for distances of 45 and 60 m was made possible without altering the quadrupole's rf/dc generator circuit by employing an rf link to drive the quadrupole rods. Applications of the system have been accomplished for in situ space simulation thermal/vacuum testing of sophisticated payloads.

Cost as a technology driver

Cost managment as a guiding factor in optimum development of technology, and proper timing of cost-saving programs in the development of a system or technology with payoffs in development and operational advances are discussed and illustrated. Advances enhancing the performance of hardware or software advances raising productivity or reducing cost, are outlined, with examples drawn from: thermochemical thrust maximization, development of cryogenic storage tanks, improvements in fuel cells for Space Shuttle, design of a spacecraft pyrotechnic initiator, cost cutting by reduction in the number of parts to be joined, and cost cutting by dramatic reductions in circuit component number with small-scale double-diffused integrated circuitry. Program-focused supporting research and technology models are devised to aid judicious timing of cost-conscious research programs.

Mass drivers. 2: Structural dynamics

Various structural and dynamical problems related to both small-scale forces between the drive coils and within the bucket structure as well as the overall combined large-scale dynamical interaction of the bucket stream and MDRE (Mass Drive Reaction Engine) structure are examined. The large-scale dynamics appear weakly stable. Finally, MDRE operation in an inverse-square-law gravitational field is discussed and the required curved shape of the guideway is computed.

Driver for solar cell I-V characteristic plots

A bipolar voltage ramp generator which applies a linear voltage through a resistor to a solar cell for plotting its current versus voltage (I-V) characteristic between short circuit and open circuit conditions is disclosed. The generator has automatic stops at the end points. The resistor serves the multiple purpose of providing a current sensing resistor, setting the full-scale current value, and providing a load line with a slope approximately equal to one, such that it will pass through the origin and the approximate center of the I-V curve with about equal distance from that center to each of the end points.

Singly-ionized helium in the driver gas of an interplanetary shock wave

The interplanetary shock wave observed on Jan. 29, 1977 by the HELIOS-1 plasma instruments shows an unusual feature: in the cold tenuous piston plasma following this shock, there appears a third peak in the energy per charge (E/q) spectra, in addition to the normal proton and alpha-particle peaks. The peak is located at E/q ? 4 and persists for about 14 hours, with slowly varying intensities. Independent simultaneous measurement of these particles' charge yields a value of approximately 1. These ions are thought to be He-4(+) ions travelling with the same speed as protons and alpha particles. The occurrence of He-4(+) indicates the possibility that during eruptive prominences or other solar transients, 'cold' chromospheric plasma might escape from the sun without undergoing the normal coronal heating process.

Flashlamp Driver for Quasi-CW Laser Pumping

Circuit maintains constant high-current level through lamp while lighted and a low simmer current through lamp while not lighted. Lamp current is switched between these two modes by transistor; transistor is therefore called current-mode switch. Stable light pulses are emitted from flashlamp when monostable multivibrator goes high, in part because unsaturated transistor switch has negative feedback control that keeps lamp current constant.

Bi-directional streaming of solar wind electrons greater than 80 eV - ISEE evidence for a closed-field structure within the driver gas of an interplanetary shock

In near time coincidence with the arrival of helium enriched plasma driving the shock wave disturbance of November 12-13, 1978, strong bi-directional streaming of solar wind electrons greater than about 80 eV was observed with Los Alamos instrumentation on ISEE 3. The streaming persisted for many hours simultaneously parallel and anti-parallel to the interplanetary magnetic field which was directed roughly perpendicular to the sun-satellite line. This example of bidirectional streaming cannot be explained by field line connection to the earth's bow shock or the outward propagating interplanetary shock which passed ISEE 3 approximately 16 hours earlier. The event is explained if the local interplanetary field was a part of a magnetic bottle rooted at the sun or a disconnected loop propagating outward.

Active lamp pulse driver circuit

A flashlamp drive circuit is described which uses an unsaturated transistor as a current mode switch to periodically subject a partially ionized gaseous laser excitation flashlamp to a stable, rectangular pulse of current from an incomplete discharge of an energy storage capacitor. A monostable multivibrator sets the pulse interval, initiating the pulse in response to a flash command by providing a reference voltage to a non-inverting terminal of a base drive amplifier; a tap on an emitter resistor provides a feedback signal sensitive to the current amplitude to an inverting terminal of amplifier, thereby controlling the pulse amplitude. The circuit drives the flashlamp to provide a squarewave current flashlamp discharge.

The VAX/VMS device driver and user operation program for the Midwestern Astronomical Data Reduction and Analysis Facility PDS microdensitometer

The Midwestern astronomical data reduction and analysis facility (MADRAF) PDS microdensitometer which was the first astronomical PDS which was provided with a Motorola 6800 microprocessor control/interface and will be interfaced to a 32-bit instruction computer operating in a multiuser environment is outlined. Command and response handshaking are handled on an RS 232 serial line while data transfer occurs on a dedicated Direct Memory Access line. This set of conditions necessitated the creation of a specialized device for the system. The general outline of this software is discussed. The availability of an extraordinarily powerful computer opened the possibility of a user operating program of great versatility with diverse data destinations and formats, automatic documentation, and an extensive set of utilities which facilitate operations.

ROM-Based Plan-Position-Indicator Sweep Driver

Circuit produces PPI display on conventional X-Y oscilloscope. Circuit requires three inputs. First is once-per-scan pulse to synchronize display to north, relative heading, or another reference direction. Second is once-per-degree-of-rotation pulse to advance sweep rotation. Third input is normal sweep ramp. Duration of ramp corresponds to maximum displayed range. Changing ramp duration, while holding its peak amplitude constant, changes maximum displayed range. Conventional methods to accomplish this task use mechanically-driven deflection coils or mechanically-driven sine and cosine potentiometers, requiring mechanical preventive maintenance plus dedicated display indicator. New method displays radar sweep on any conventional storage oscilloscope.

Design drivers of the Space Station Propulsion System

The objective of this paper is to describe some of the factors that are being considered by NASA in the selection of the Space Station Propulsion System. The paper describes briefly several design alternatives under consideration. The emphasis of this paper is on understanding the criteria being used by NASA, rather than a quantitative evaluation of the design alternatives. Four system evaluation criteria are suggested: cost, safety, technical readiness, and opportunities for station evolution. Within the cost criteria, the impact of the design alternatives on maintenance and resupply costs is discussed. Safety is suggested to be determined more by the nature of the propellants than the possible loss of the propulsion function. Technical readiness is primarily an evaluation of the risk of schedule delay, more than a concern over a showstopper in the development of any of the systems. Finally, the opportunity for station evolution is described in terms of the development of an oxygen/hydrogen economy for the Space Station.

The driver in flares and coronal mass ejections: Magnetic expansion

Chromospheric filaments, and hence the sheared magnetic fields that they trace, are observed to erupt in flares and coronal mass ejections. In the eruption, the filament-traced field is seen to expand in volume. For frozen-in magnetic field and isotropic expansion, the magnetic energy in a flux tube decreases as the flux tube expands. The amount of expansion of the magnetic field and the corresponding decrease in magnetic energy in a filament-eruption flare and/or coronal mass ejection can be estimated to order of magnitude from the observed expansion of the erupting filament. This evaluation for filament-eruption events in which the filament expansion is clearly displayed gives decreases in magnetic energy of the order of the total energy of the accompanying flare and/or coronal mass ejection. This simple expanding flux tube model can also fit the observed acceleration of coronal mass ejections, if it is assumed that the increase in mechanical energy of the mass ejection comes from the magnetic energy decrease in the expansion. These results encourage the view that magnetic expansion such as seen in filament eruptions drives both the plasma particle energization in flares and the bulk mass motion in coronal mass ejections.

Improvement of pump tubes for gas guns and shock tube drivers

In a pump tube, a gas is mechanically compressed, producing very high pressures and sound speeds. The intensely heated gas produced in such a tube can be used to drive light gas guns and shock tubes. Three concepts are presented that have the potential to allow substantial reductions in the size and mass of the pump tube to be achieved. The first concept involves the use of one or more diaphragms in the pump tube, thus replacing a single compression process by multiple, successive compressions. The second concept involves a radical reduction in the length-to-diameter ratio of the pump tube and the pump tube piston. The third concept involves shock heating of the working gas by high explosives in a cyclindrical geometry reusable device. Preliminary design analyses are performed on all three concepts and they appear to be quite feasible. Reductions in the length and mass of the pump tube by factors up to about 11 and about 7, respectively, are predicted, relative to a benchmark conventional pump tube.
