Elasticity of davemaoite as a primary contributor to lower-mantle heterogeneities

Geophysical detection of subducted mid–ocean ridge basalt (MORB) in the lower mantle is hindered by uncertainties in the elasticity of Fe,Al,Mg,Ti–bearing davemaoite, a key MORB component. Using Brillouin spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, we determined the elasticity of a Ca 0.906(1) Fe 2+ 0.027(1) Fe 3+ 0.042(1) Mg 0.033(1) Al 0.072(1) Ti 0.020(1) Si 0.912(1) O 3 davemaoite up to 113 gigapascals and 2294 K. Here, we found that it exhibited a shear wave velocity 10 to 20% slower than end-member davemaoite, making it the slowest phase among major lower-mantle minerals. Our models show that MORB, containing 20 to 25 volume percent davemaoite, potentially contributes to large low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs), whereas a cumulate layer enriched in davemaoite crystallized from basal magma ocean may comprise ultralow-velocity zones (ULVZs). Davemaoite’s ability to host incompatible and heat-producing elements possibly links LLSVPs and ULVZs to mantle plume initiation and geochemical signatures of ocean island basalts.

The kagomé metals RbTi 3 Bi 5 and CsTi 3 Bi 5

Abstract The kagomé metals RbTi 3 Bi 5 and CsTi 3 Bi 5 were synthesized both as polycrystalline powders by heating the elements in an argon atmosphere and as single crystals grown using a self-flux method. The compounds crystallize in the hexagonal crystal system isotypically to KV 3 Sb 5 ( P 6/ mmm , Z = 1, CsTi 3 Bi 5 : a = 5.7873(1), c = 9.2062(1) Å; RbTi 3 Bi 5 : a = 5.773(1), c = 9.065(1) Å). The titanium atoms form a kagomé net with bismuth atoms in the hexagons as well as above and below the triangles. The alkali metal atoms are coordinated by 12 bismuth atoms and form AlB 2 -like slabs between the kagomé layers. Magnetic susceptibility measurements with CsTi 3 Bi 5 and RbTi 3 Bi 5 single crystals reveal Pauli-paramagnetism and traces of superconductivity caused by CsBi 2 /RbBi 2 impurities. Magnetotransport measurements reveal conventional Fermi liquid behavior and quantum oscillations indicative of a single dominant orbit at low temperature. DFT calculations show the characteristic metallic kagomé band structure similar to that of CsV 3 Sb 5 with reduced band filling. A symmetry analysis of the band structure does not reveal an obvious and unique signature of a nontrivial topology.

Validation of a Pressure Dependent PBX 9501 Cookoff Model

A pressure dependent cookoff model for PBX 9501 was developed. This cookoff model was implemented in the finite element (FE) heat transfer code Aria and was used to simulate a set of cookoff experiments. This set is called the Large Scale Annular Cookoff (LSAC) experiments. Three dimensional and axisymmetric heat conduction FE models were implemented to simulate these experiments. The predictive ability of the PBX 9501 pressure dependent cookoff model was evaluated using Latin Hypercube sampling (LHS). Predictions of the thermal times to ignition and temperatures are compared with the experiments.

Increasing melt efficiency and secondary alloy usage in aluminum die casting

In this project, the focus was to develop thermodynamic and kinetic models for the aluminum melting process involving secondary alloys, refractory materials and flux materials. The major research outcome of this study is 1) the refractory composition of CaO (8-12%), microsilica (1-3%), BaSO 4 and/or BaO (no more than 5%), B 2 O 3 (5%) and Al 2 O 3 (balance) effectively reduced the reactions with liquid Al and alloying/impurity elements and heat transfer during melting and holding process. 2) a flux composition of NaCl-KCl-(1-10%)KAlF 4 exhibited an effective covering effect and prevented the dross formation during melting of Al process. 3) A high Fe (0.44%) content recycled Al alloy with compatible mechanical properties was developed based on the impurities control methods, which provides great potential to replace the commercial structural alloys from primary Al and increase the usage of secondary alloys.

HFIR LEU High Density Silicide Dispersion Optimized Design Neutronics Analyses with PHAME

A high-fidelity neutronics model of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) with the low-enriched uranium (LEU) high-density silicide dispersion Optimized fuel design was updated and analyzed to generate reactor physics-based metrics to support follow-on thermal hydraulic and transient analyses of this design. The Python HFIR Analysis and Measurement Engine (PHAME) was also updated to enhance the automation capabilities of the framework developed and maintained to perform these reactor physics modeling and simulation efforts. The automated framework significantly increases the efficiency and reproducibility to design and thoroughly analyzes HFIR LEU core designs, changes, and uncertainties. Reactor physics metrics evaluated include but are not limited to fuel depletion, cycle length, fission rate density distributions, axial power peaking factors, kinetics data, reactivity coefficients, control element worths, heat deposition rates, and decay heat. These neutronics results provide essential input to follow-on steady state thermal, thermal hydraulic and reactor transient analyses, which are subject of other reports. The Optimized design operates at 95 MW to maintain HFIR’s current highly enriched uranium core performance level at 85 MW.

Improved source of infrared radiation for spectroscopy

Radiation from a crimped V-groove in the electrically heated metallic element of a high-resolution infrared spectrometer is more intense than that from plane areas adjacent to the element. Radiation from the vee and the flat was compared by alternately focusing on the entrance slit of a spectrograph.

Completely modular thermionic reactor ion propulsion system /trips/.

Description of a nuclear reactor powered ion propulsion system which is an advanced completely modularized system lending itself to development of prototype and/or flight type components without the need for complete system tests until late in the development program. This modularity is achieved in all of the subsystems and components of the electric propulsion system, including the thermionic fuel elements, the heat rejection subsystem (head pipes), the power conditioning modules, and the ion thrusters. The use of heat pipes for cooling the collectors and as a means of heat transport to the radiator allows early prototype or flight configuration testing of a small module of the heat rejection subsystem as opposed to full scale liquid metal pumps and radiators in a large vacuum chamber. The power conditioner (p/c) is arranged in modules with passive cooling which allows complete prototype testing. The ion engines are typically matched with one or more p/c modules and are the same size for any power level propulsion system of interest.

Investigation of gaseous propellant combustion and associated injector/chamber design guidelines

Injector design criteria are provided for gaseous hydrogen-gaseous oxygen propellants. Design equations and procedures are presented which will allow an injector-chamber designer to a priori estimate of the performance, compatibility and stability characteristics of prototype injectors. The effects of chamber length, element geometry, thrust per element, mixture ratio, impingement angle, and element spacing were evaluated for four element concepts and their derivatives. The data from this series of tests were reduced to a single valued mixing function that describes the mixing potential of the various elements. Performance, heat transfer and stability data were generated for various mixture ratios, propellant temperatures, chamber pressures, contraction ratios, and chamber lengths. Applications of the models resulted in the design of procedures, whereby the performance and chamber heat flux can be calculated directly, and the injector stability estimated in conjunction with existing models.

Petrogenesis in a modestly endowed moon

Four lines of recent evidence show that the moon is more modestly endowed in refractory elements and heat sources than previously thought. However, even this reduced endowment is adequate for the genesis of known lunar rock types. The thickness and nature of the initially molten zone and the structure of the crust and the lithosphere produced from it are the major uncertainties in models of lunar petrogenesis.
