A Systematic Methodology for Modeling and Attitude Control of Multi-body Space Telescopes

This paper derives a symbolic multi-body rigid nonlinear model for a space telescope using Stoneking’s implementation of Kane’s method. This symbolic nonlinear model is linearized using Matlab symbolic functions diff and inv because the analytic linearization is intractable for manual derivation. The linearized system model is then used to design the controllers using both linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and robust pole assignment methods. The closed-loop systems for the two designs are simulated using both the rigid model as well as a second model containing flexible modes. The performances of the two designs are compared based on the simulation testing results. Our conclusion is that the robust pole assignment design offers better performance than that of the LQR system in terms of actuator usage and pointing accuracy. However, the LQR approach remains an effective first design step that can inform the selection of real eigenvalues for robust pole assignment. The proposed method may be used for the modeling and controller designs for various multi-body systems.

Preserving Tracer Correlations in Moment-Based Atmospheric Transport Models

A linear non-diffusive algorithm for advective transport is developed that greatly improves the detail at which aerosols and clouds can be represented in atmospheric models. Linear advection schemes preserve tracer correlations but the most basic linear scheme is rarely used by atmospheric modelers on account of its excessive numerical diffusion. Higher-order schemes are in widespread use, but these present new problems as nonlinear adjustments are required to avoid occurrences of negative concentrations, spurious oscillations, and other non-physical effects. Generally successful at reducing numerical diffusion during the advection of individual tracers, for example, particle number or mass, the higher-order schemes fail to preserve even the simplest of correlations between interrelated tracers. As a result, important attributes of aerosol and cloud populations including radial moments of particle size distributions, molecular precursors related through chemical equilibria, aerosol mixing state, and distribution of cloud phase are poorly represented. We introduce a new transport scheme, minVAR, that is both non-diffusive and preservative of tracer correlations, thereby combining the best features of the basic and higher-order schemes while enabling new features such as the tracking of sub-grid information at arbitrarily fine scales with high computational efficiency.

Nonlinear modeling and estimation of slew induced structural deformations

A model of the nonlinear dynamics of a deformable maneuvering multibody system is described, whereby elastic deformation are modeled by restoring forces and dissipative forces at point mass appendages. This model is brought into bilinear form. Estimation of deformations occasioned by rapid slewing maneuvers is carried out by a filter based on a globally equivalent linear model of the bilinear dynamics, and is shown to be an improvement over the extended Kalman filter. To further alleviate the computational burden, the estimated deformation state is propagated between observations by a low dimensional operator spline interpolator of bilinear system Volterra series, which is easily implemented.

Modelling of physical influences in sea level records for vertical crustal movement detection

Attempts to specify and evaluate such physical influences are reviewed with the intention of identifying problem areas and promising approaches. An example of linear modelling based on air/water temperatures, atmospheric pressure, river discharges, geostrophic and/or local wind velocities, and including forced period terms to allow for the long period tides and Chandlerian polar motion is evaluated and applied to monthly mean sea levels recorded in Atlantic Canada. Refinement of the model to admit phase lag in the response to some of the driving phenomena is demonstrated. Spectral analysis of the residuals is employed to assess the model performance. The results and associated statistical parameters are discussed with emphasis on elucidating the sensitivity of the technique for detection of local episodic and secular vertical crustal movements, the problem areas most critical to the type of approach, and possible further developments.

Analysis and modeling of a family of two-transistor parallel inverters

A family of five static dc-to-square-wave inverters, each employing a square-loop magnetic core in conjunction with two switching transistors, is analyzed using piecewise-linear models for the nonlinear characteristics of the transistors, diodes, and saturable-core devices. Four of the inverters are analyzed in detail for the first time. These analyses show that, by proper choice of a frame of reference, each of the five quite differently appearing inverter circuits can be described by a common equivalent circuit. This equivalent circuit consists of a five-segment nonlinear resistor, a nonlinear saturable reactor, and a linear capacitor. Thus, by proper interpretation and identification of the parameters in the different circuits, the results of a detailed solution for one of the inverter circuits provide similar information and insight into the local and global behavior of each inverter in the family.

Overshooting thunderstorm cloud top dynamics as approximated by a linear Lagrangian parcel model with analytic exact solutions

Results are presented from a linear Lagrangian entraining parcel model of an overshooting thunderstorm cloud top. The model, which is similar to that of Adler and Mack (1986), gives analytic exact solutions for vertical velocity and temperature by representing mixing with Rayleigh damping instead of nonlinearly. Model results are presented for various combinations of stratospheric lapse rate, drag intensity, and mixing strength. The results are compared to those of Adler and Mack.

Linear tracking systems with applications to aircraft control system design

A class of optimal linear time invariant tracking systems, both in continuous time and discrete time, of which the number of inputs (which are restricted to be step functions) is equal to the number of system outputs, is studied. Along with derivation of equations and design procedures, two discretization schemes are presented, constraining either the control or its time derivative, to be a constant over each sampling period. Descriptions are given for the linearized model of the F-8C aircraft longitudinal dynamics, and the C* handling qualities criterion, which then serve as an illustration of the applications of these linear tracking designs. A suboptimal reduced state design is also presented. Numerical results are given for both the continuous time and discrete time designs.

Dynamic model for an instrument pointing system

The instrument pointing system concept discussed in the present paper was developed for Spacelab missions. The system is mounted on soft shockmounts to minimize Shuttle disturbances (such as man motion, thruster firings, etc.) and to reduce the effect of large center of mass offsets between the instrument and the pointing system gimbal axes. The instrument pointing system is soft mounted to the Spacelab pallet located in the Orbiter payload bay. The nonlinear model, incorporating the dynamic equations of motion, the controller equations and the definition of sensor dynamics and gimbal bearing friction, is given, along with a system of linearized equations of motion of the Space Shuttle Orbiter and instrument pointing system (linearized model).

The influence of ground conductivity on the structure of RF radiation from return strokes

The combination of the finite conductivity of the Earth plus the propagation of the return stroke current up the channel which results in an apparent time delay between the fast field changes and RF radiation for distant observers is shown. The time delay predicted from model return strokes is on the order of 20 micro and the received signal has the characteristics of the data observed in Virginia and Florida. A piecewise linear model for the return stroke channel and a transmission line model for current propagation on each segment was used. Radiation from each segment is calculated over a flat Earth with finite conductivity using asymptotics approximations for the Sommerfeld integrals. The radiation at the observer is processed by a model AM radio receiver. The output voltage was calculated for several frequencies between HF-UHF assuming a system bandwidth (300 kHz) characteristic of the system used to collect data in Florida and Virginia. Comparison with the theoretical fast field changes indicates a time delay of 20 microns.

State-Dependent Pseudo-Linear Filter for Spacecraft Attitude and Rate Estimation

This paper presents the development and performance of a special algorithm for estimating the attitude and angular rate of a spacecraft. The algorithm is a pseudo-linear Kalman filter, which is an ordinary linear Kalman filter that operates on a linear model whose matrices are current state estimate dependent. The nonlinear rotational dynamics equation of the spacecraft is presented in the state space as a state-dependent linear system. Two types of measurements are considered. One type is a measurement of the quaternion of rotation, which is obtained from a newly introduced star tracker based apparatus. The other type of measurement is that of vectors, which permits the use of a variety of vector measuring sensors like sun sensors and magnetometers. While quaternion measurements are related linearly to the state vector, vector measurements constitute a nonlinear function of the state vector. Therefore, in this paper, a state-dependent linear measurement equation is developed for the vector measurement case. The state-dependent pseudo linear filter is applied to simulated spacecraft rotations and adequate estimates of the spacecraft attitude and rate are obtained for the case of quaternion measurements as well as of vector measurements.

Small Signal Modelling and Control of the Hydrogen Mixer for Facility E1

We have undertaken the theoretical modelling of an existing liquid hydrogen (LH2) and gas hydrogen (GH2) mixer subsystem of the E1 Ground Test Facility at NASA John C. Stennis Space Center. The E1 test facility carries out comprehensive ground-based testing and certification of various liquid rocket engines and their components. The mixer described in this work is responsible for combining high pressure LH2 and GH2 to produce a hydrogen flow that meets certain thermodynamic properties before it is fed into a test article. The desired properties are maintained by precise control of the mixture of LH2 and GH2 flows. The mixer is modelled as a general multi-flow lumped volume for single constituent fluids using density and internal energy as states. The set of nonlinear differential equations is linearized about an equilibrium point and the resulting two-state, 3-input linear model is analyzed as a possible candidate for control design.

Simulink-Based Simulation Architecture for Evaluating Controls for Aerospace Vehicles (SAREC-ASV)

The Simulation Architecture for Evaluating Controls for Aerospace Vehicles (SAREC-ASV) is a Simulink-based approach to providing an engineering quality desktop simulation capability for finding trim solutions, extracting linear models for vehicle analysis and control law development, and generating open-loop and closed-loop time history responses for control system evaluation. It represents a useful level of maturity rather than a finished product. The layout is hierarchical and supports concurrent component development and validation, with support from the Concurrent Versions System (CVS) software management tool. Real Time Workshop (RTW) is used to generate pre-compiled code for substantial component modules, and templates permit switching seamlessly between original Simulink and code compiled for various platforms. Two previous limitations are addressed. Turn around time for incorporating tabular model components was improved through auto-generation of required Simulink diagrams based on data received in XML format. The layout was modified to exploit a Simulink "compile once, evaluate multiple times" capability for zero elapsed time for use in trimming and linearizing. Trim is achieved through a Graphical User Interface (GUI) with a narrow, script definable interface to the vehicle model which facilitates incorporating new models.
