Fabrication and Testing of Micro Flux Monitors in the High Flux Isotope Reactor

Neutron dosimetry is a critical technique to measure the neutron flux, fluence, and energy spectrum of nuclear reactors and can be used to indicate fuel reloading, high-power operations, or changes in cycle length. This work presents results of a novel device named the micro flux monitor, which is a miniaturized neutron dosimeter made from small quantities (100s of nanograms) of Ti, Al, Ni, and Au metals deposited on Si and high-purity fused silica substrates using standard semiconductor fabrication techniques. Approximately 1,250 of these devices were produced, and 40 were irradiated in the pneumatic tube facility of the Neutron Activation Analysis Laboratory at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. Testing demonstrated that dosimeter metals can be deposited predictably and repeatedly in multiple geometries, including as quick response (QR) codes. Neutron flux measurements with these devices were within 3% of measurements made using standard flux monitors, demonstrating the efficacy of these devices. Devices were also tested at 500°C under a N2 atmosphere and showed minimal degradation, suggesting they could be deployed for neutron dosimetry measurements in high-temperature advanced reactors.

Measuring the Interfacial Chemistry of Micro- and Nano-Plastics Using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization

Micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) pose a significant hazard to both environmental and human health due to their complex interfacial interactions with their surroundings, however there is a lack of techniques available to study the composition of MNPs at their surface. To fill this gap, representative MNPs were coated with matrix that enabled detection via matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI), a technique that has been shown to be surface specific but had not been applied to MNPs previously. Three different coating techniques were tested; evaporation and condensation, drop-casting, and mixed nebulization. Mixed nebulization provided the best balance of results, which was a strong MALDI signal in combination with even coating on the MNP surface from MNPs ≥20 µm. This work provides a new technique for the measurement of MNP surface composition that will help advance the field and enable more thorough studies of the chemical transformations that MNPs undergo in the environment.

Macro-micro multiscale modeling to assist the design of HPDC Al castings microstructure and alloys for EV super-large body structures (Phase 1)

Implementation of High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) Aluminum (Al) body structures for high volume electrified vehicles (EV) to improve electric efficiency remains a key strategy within many original equipment manufacturers (OEM)s. In addition to high strength for safety requirements, superior Self Piercing Riveting (SPR) performance is demanded for HPDC Al alloys to be compatible with high volume SPR joining. In this work, it is proposed to extend and validate an existing Contractor finite element multiscale macro-micro modeling approach to quantify the influence of the microstructure of HPDC alloys on the fracture strain/displacement under 3-point bend and clinch testing. The success of this work will allow to replace solution treatment stage with low energy consumption heat treatment (HT) processes, or to design new non heat treatable (NHT) HPDC Al alloys to eliminate HT requirements. Ultimately, this project will facilitate the application of HPDC Al alloys for super-large vehicle structures to significantly reduce vehicle weight and thus improving energy efficiency. The purpose of this project is to extend and validate an existing f

Develop a new integrated macro→micro←nano (MMN) multiscale modeling framework to optimize high strength aluminum alloys and processes for vehicle light-weighting

Bending tests provide a means to study plane strain fracture performance of 6000 series aluminum alloys. Metrics from bending tests have been correlated with self-pierce riveting (SPR) performance of a high strength AA6111 automotive aluminum alloy in previous works. Using the ORNL HPC resources, this project developed an innovative macro→micro←nano (MMN) multiscale microstructure-based finite element (FE) code to further the understanding of microstructural relationship to fracture properties of high strength 6000 series alloys.

Combining hyperspectral imaging and micro-X-ray fluorescence imaging methods for ultra-high-resolution biogeochemical analysis

Current non-destructive methods for high-resolution geochemical imaging open new avenues for high-resolution paleoenvironmental research. We discuss how two of these methods, hyperspectral imaging and micro-X-ray fluorescence imaging, can be combined for organic and inorganic geochemical analyses at a micrometer scale.

Shear dampers for deflections of micro-inch magnitudes

The rotation of the TV camera on the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 (MJS77) spacecraft will excite the long magnetometer and heavy RTG booms which are slightly damped perturbances that have long settling times. To ensure clear TV pictures additional damping was required over micro-inch displacements and at low frequencies. The solution incorporated elastomeric shear dampers at the base of these booms which possessed high loss tangent values in the expected frequency and temperature ranges. Presented are the shear damper design, results of full scale horizontal boom tests and relative effects of damper sizing and temperature. Boom instrumentation and excitation used for the full scale tests are also discussed.

Determination of micro amounts of iron, aluminum, and alkaline earth metals in silicon carbide

A colorimetric method for analysis of micro components in silicon carbide used as the raw material for varistors is described. The microcomponents analyzed included iron soluble in hydrochloric acid, iron, aluminum, calcium and magnesium. Samples were analyzed by the method, and the results for iron and aluminum agreed well with the N.B.S. standard values and the values obtained by the other company. The method can therefore be applied to the analysis of actual samples.

Rectenna session: Micro aspects

Two micro aspects of rectenna design are discussed: evaluation of the degradation in net rectenna RF to DC conversion efficiency due to power density variations across the rectenna (power combining analysis) and design of Yagi-Uda receiving elements to reduce rectenna cost by decreasing the number of conversion circuits (directional receiving elements). The first of these involves resolving a fundamental question of efficiency potential with a rectenna, while the second involves a design modification with a large potential cost saving.
