Directionally asymmetric nonlinear optics in ferrorotational MnTiO 3

Ferrorotationally ordered materials possess a planar chiral lattice of electric dipoles that are a promising platform for exhibiting directionally asymmetric response functions. A key characteristic of such order is that enantiomorph conversion occurs when the solid is flipped by 180° about an in-plane axis. Using second-harmonic interferometry, we show here that when circularly polarized light is incident on MnTiO 3 , the generated harmonic intensity depends on whether the incident light is parallel or antiparallel to the ferrorotational axis. For a particular photon helicity, constructive interference occurs in one direction while destructive interference occurs in the other. Here, our observations represent a fundamentally new optical effect, associated with circularly polarized light in ferrorotational solids, that is distinct from conventional optical activity observed in three-dimensional chiral and Faraday media.

Emergent spin-1 Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin- 1 2 ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb 2 Cu 2 Mo 3 O 12 has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-12 chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a unique class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Noncollinear magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling in buckled honeycomb Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 : A single-crystal neutron diffraction study

Through an analysis of single-crystal neutron diffraction data, we present the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric properties of Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 under various magnetic fields. In zero field, neutron diffraction experiments below T N =27K reveal that the Co 2+ moments order in the (ab) plane without any spin canting along the c axis, manifested by the magnetic symmetry C2/c'. Along each Co chain parallel to the c axis, the moments of nearest-neighbor Co atoms order ferromagnetically with a small cant away from the next-nearest-neighbor Co moments. Under the applied magnetic field H ∥ a, three magnetic domains were aligned with their major magnetic moments perpendicular to the magnetic field with no other observable magnetic transitions. The influences of magnetic fields on the magnetic structures associated with the observed magnetoelectric coupling are discussed.

First-principles study of an S = 1 quasi one-dimensional quantum molecular magnetic material

We use density functional theory to study the structural, magnetic, and electronic structures of the organometallic quantum magnet NiCl 2-4 SC (NH 2 ) 2 (DTN). Recent work has demonstrated the quasi one-dimensional nature of the molecular crystal and studied its quantum phase transitions at low temperatures. The system includes a magnetoelectric (ME) coupling and, when doped with Br, the presence of an exotic Bose-glass state. Using the generalized gradient approximation with inclusion of a van der Waals term to account for weak intermolecular forces and by introducing a Hubbard U term to the total energy, we systematically show that our calculations reproduce the magnetic anisotropy, the intermolecular exchange coupling strength, and the magnetoelectric effect in DTN, which have been observed in previous experiments. Further analysis of the electronic structure gives insight into the underlying magnetic interactions, including what mechanisms may be causing the ME effect. Using this computationally efficient model, we predict what effect applying an electric field might have on the magnetic properties of this quantum magnet.

Manipulation of spin orientation via ferroelectric switching in Fe-doped Bi 2 WO 6 from first principles

Atomic-scale control of spins by electric fields is highly desirable for future technological applications. Magnetically doped Aurivillius-phase oxides present one route to achieve this, with magnetic ions substituted into the ferroelectric structure at dilute concentrations, resulting in spin-charge coupling. However, there has been minimal exploration of the ferroelectric switching pathways in this materials class, limiting predictions of the influence of an electric field on magnetic spins in the structure. Here, we determine the ferroelectric switching pathways of the end member of the Aurivillius phase family, Bi 2 WO 6 , using a combination of group theoretic analysis and density functional theory calculations. We find that in the ground state P2 1 ab phase, a two-step switching pathway via C2 and Cm intermediate phases provides the lowest energy barrier. Considering iron substitutions on the W site in Bi 2 WO 6 , we determine the spin easy axis. Finally, by tracking the change in spin directionality during ferroelectric switching, we find that a 90° switch in the polarization direction leads to a 112° reorientation of the spin easy axis. The low-symmetry crystal-field environment of Bi 2 WO 6 and magnetoelastic coupling on the magnetic dopant provide a route to spin control via an applied electric field.

Weak trimerization in the frustrated two-dimensional triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3

To understand the 2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system, we investigated the magnetic structures and the dynamics of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 in detail. The substitutions are adjusted to the Mn atomic position close to x Mn =$\frac{1}{3}$. The neutron powder diffraction data claims that the magnetic structure of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 is described as a mixture of Γ 3 (P6' 3 cm') and Γ 4 (P6' 3 c'm) at the x Mn position for y=0.15, 0.30, and 0.45. The ratio of Γ 3 and Γ 4 depends on temperature and composition and the fraction of Γ 3 increases upon cooling, while no clear trimerization was observed at the xMn position. We estimated exchange parameters from the analysis of the low-energy part of the spin waves. The results showed a weak trimerization effect on cooling because the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction is slightly enhanced. The temperature dependence of the spin-wave dispersion around the Γ point shows that the spin gap closes with increasing temperature because the exchange interactions in the nearest Mn-Mn neighbor become smaller. Gapless diffusive magnetic excitation from a Mn triangular lattice has been observed in a wide range in Q and E space of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 . We found that Lu 0.3 Y 0.7 MnO 3 could be an ideal case to investigate the trimerization, frustrated magnetism, and magnetoelastic coupling often observed in two-dimensional triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet systems.

Large spin-driven dielectric response and magnetoelectric coupling in the buckled honeycomb $Fe_4Nb_2O_9$

Here, we present the significant spin-driven dielectric anomaly (~40% drop) and magnetoelectric coupling near the magnetic ordering temperature in single crystal $Fe_4Nb_2O_9$ . By combining neutron and x-ray single crystal diffraction techniques, we unambiguously determined its magnetic symmetry and studied the structural phase transition at $T_S$ = 70 K. The temperature-dependent static dielectric constant is strongly anisotropic, rendering two dielectric anomalies along the $a$ axis in the hexagonal lattice with the first one coupled to the magnetic ordering around $T_N$ = 97 K and the second one accompanying with a first-order structural transition around $T_S$ = 70 K. Below $T_N$, we found that the anomalous dielectric constant is practically proportional to the square of the magnetic moment from neutron diffraction data, indicating that the exchange striction is likely responsible for the strong spin-lattice coupling. Magnetic-field-induced magnetoelectric coupling was observed and is compatible with the determined magnetic structure that is characteristic of antiferromagnetically arranged ferromagnetic chains in the honeycomb plane. We propose that such magnetic symmetry should be immune to external magnetic fields to some extent favored by the freedom of rotation of moments in the honeycomb plane, laying out a promising system to control the magnetoelectric properties by magnetic fields.

Magnetoelectric effect arising from a field-induced pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion in a rare-earth magnet

Magnetoelectric materials are attractive for several applications, including actuators, switches, and magnetic field sensors. Typical mechanisms for achieving a strong magnetoelectric coupling are rooted in transition metal magnetism. In sharp contrast, here we identify CsEr(MoO 4 ) 2 as a magnetoelectric material without magnetic transition metal ions, thus ensuring that the Er ions play a key role in achieving this interesting property. Our detailed study includes measurements of the structural, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of this material. Bulk characterization and neutron powder diffraction show no evidence for structural phase transitions down to 0.3 K and therefore CsEr(MoO 4 ) 2 maintains the room temperature P2/c space group over a wide temperature range without external magnetic field. These same measurements also identify collinear antiferromagnetic ordering of the Er 3+ moments below T N =0.87K. Complementary dielectric constant and pyroelectric current measurements reveal that a ferroelectric phase with a maximum polarization P~0.6 nC/cm 2 emerges when applying a modest external magnetic field, which indicates that this material has a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Finally, we argue that the magnetoelectric coupling in this system arises from a pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion induced by the magnetic field.

Theoretical perspective on phase stability and polarization switching in ferroelectric hafnia

Fluorite-based ferroelectric materials are revolutionizing the application space of polar semiconductors. These materials leverage robust polarization of extremely thin films, compatibility with the silicon chip processing, and decades of manufacturing experience to enable a new generation of ferroelectric memory devices. As a new paradigm for ferroelectrics, understanding of phase transitions and the switching mechanism in fluorites is essential both for advancing applications and for fundamental science. In this article, we outline the recent progress that has been made to understand the relative phase stability, phase transition and order parameter coupling, ferroelectric switching through unique nucleation and growth processes, and how defects affect these phases and processes. The main challenges, opportunities, and next steps for leveraging these materials for next-generation devices are reviewed.

Magnetic Field Perturbations to a Soft X-ray-Activated Fe (II) Molecular Spin State Transition

The X-ray-induced spin crossover transition of an Fe (II) molecular thin film in the presence and absence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The thermal activation energy barrier in the soft X-ray activation of the spin crossover transition for [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] molecular thin films is reduced in the presence of an applied magnetic field, as measured through X-ray absorption spectroscopy at various temperatures. The influence of a 1.8 T magnetic field is sufficient to cause deviations from the expected exponential spin state transition behavior which is measured in the field free case. We find that orbital moment diminishes with increasing temperature, relative to the spin moment in the vicinity of room temperature.

Dielectric and Structural Properties of the Hybrid Material Polyvinylidene Fluoride-Bacterial Nanocellulose-Based Composite

In the search for environmentally friendly materials with a wide range of properties, polymer composites have emerged as a promising alternative due to their multifunctional properties. This study focuses on the synthesis of composite materials consisting of four components: bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) modified with magnetic Fe 3 O 4 , and a mixture of BaTiO 3 (BT) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The BT powder was mechanically activated prior to mixing with PVDF. The influence of BT mechanical activation and BNC with magnetic particles on the PVDF matrix was investigated. The obtained composite films’ structural characteristics, morphology, and dielectric properties are presented. This research provides insights into the relationship between mechanical activation of the filler and structural and dielectric properties in the PVDF/BT/BNC/Fe 3 O 4 system, creating the way for the development of materials with a wide range of diverse properties that support the concept of green technologies.
