Nondestructive Evaluation and In-Situ Monitoring Efforts for Additive Manufacturing

Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is required to determine the quality of additive manufactured (AM) parts due to the inherent variability of AM processes. In-situ monitoring technologies endeavor to characterize the process and part quality during production. Qualifying an in-situ monitoring technology requires a proven, causal correlation between indications in the monitoring data and flaws in the finished part.

Methods for nondestructive dispersing of carbon nanomaterials in water

A method termed “superacid-surfactant exchange” (S2E) for the dispersion of carbon nanomaterials in aqueous solutions. This S2E method enables nondestructive dispersion of carbon nanomaterials (including single-walled carbon nanotubes, double-walled carbon nanotubes, multi-wall carbon nanotubes, and graphene) at rapidly and at large scale in aqueous solution without a requirement for expensive or complicated equipment. Dispersed carbon nanotubes obtained from this method feature long length, low defect density, high electrical conductivity, and in the case of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes, bright photoluminescence in the near-infrared.

Autonomous nondestructive evaluation of resistance spot welded joints

The application of non-destructive evaluation approaches has attracted strong interests in modern automotive industries. Here, we present an autonomous deep-computing framework to analyze raw videos from infrared systems and to predict weld nugget shape and size with unprecedented accuracy and speed. In a comprehensive training and testing experiment with 90 videos (seven sets of welding material stack-ups), a new method was developed to assemble sufficient datasets for neural network training. Our framework successfully predicts all the nugget shapes with F1 scores that range from 0.84 to 0.92. The total training time on Nvidia DGX station takes less than 10 min for each set of welding material stack-up. The real inference time of an individual dataset (with 30 video frames) takes about 0.005 s. The procedure and methods developed in the study can be applied to other image-based weld property prediction, as well as other manufacturing processes. Furthermore, our well-trained neural networks take limited memory resources (2.3 MB) and are suitable for embedded microprocessors for in-situ welding quality control as edge computing within an intelligent welding framework.

Nondestructive Characterization of Adhesive Bonds from Guided Wave Data

The critical role played by adhesive bonds in the fracture and failure of composites and other bonded materials is well known. A good knowledge of the mechanical properties of these adhesion joints is a prerequisite to reliable design and reliable prediction of the performance of these bonded structures.

Nondestructive Determination of Heat/Fire Damage to Polymer- Matrix Composites Using Obliquely Insonified Ultrasonic Waves

Heat and fire damage to composite structures cause loss of strength that cannot be detected by current NDE methods unless physical damage occurs. Further, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the mechanism of damage from thermal exposure of organic matrix composites to elevated temperatures. Information compiled from field reports and lab experiments increasingly suggests that there is material degradation and it is not necessarily involved with the introduction of physical defects. In recent years, various researchers examined the potential to identifying thermal degradation to organic matrix composites prior to delamination. The methods that were used include: ultrasonics, backscattered X-ray, eddy current, thermography, drift and LPF spectroscopies, acousto-ultrasonics and hardness testing. None of these methods were able to correlate NDE results with loss of mechanical properties.

Guidebook for Limited Sample Probability of Detection (LS-POD) Demonstration for Signal-Response Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Methods

This document provides guidance for performing limited sample probability of detection (LS-POD) demonstration testing with smaller numbers of flawed specimens than the 29 required for the Point Estimate POD method referenced in NASA Standard 5009B. This document is specifically applicable to NASA programs and projects where NASA Special NDE methods are used to inspect fracture critical human spaceflight metallic hardware when the minimum number of flawed specimens required for the Point Estimate POD method referenced in NASA Standard 5009B (2019) are not available.

Applications of Advanced Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) Techniques to Address Safety of Flight Issues on NASA Spacecraft

Advanced NDE and SHM techniques are critical for ensuring the reliability and safety of NASA launch vehicles and spacecraft. NDE techniques such as infrared thermography, THz imaging, x-ray computed tomography and backscatter x-ray are used to detect indications of damage in spacecraft components and structures. Additionally, sensor and measurement systems are integrated into spacecraft to provide SHM to detect damaging events that occur during flight such as debris impacts during launch and assent or from micrometeoroid and orbital debris, or excessive loading due to anomalous flight conditions. A number of examples will be provided of how these NDE and SHM techniques have been applied to resolve safety critical inspection concerns for the Space Shuttle, International Space Station (ISS), and a variety of launch vehicles and unmanned spacecraft.

Capability Demonstrations for Penetrant Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) of Metallic Tanks and Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel (COPV) Liners

As the desired crack detection size is decreased and approaches the physical limitations of liquid penetrant inspection techniques, the approach of performing a probability of detection (POD) validation test at a single aspect ratio, and then extending the results to other aspect ratios based on equivalent area predictions may not be valid. POD testing for penetrant inspection of metallic pressure vessels and COPV liners should be performed at the bounds of the required range of crack aspect ratios.
