Space Construction Automated Fabrication Experiment Definition Study (SCAFEDS), part 3. Volume 3: Requirements

The performance, design and verification requirements for the space Construction Automated Fabrication Experiment (SCAFE) are defined. The SCAFE program defines, develops, and demonstrates the techniques, processes, and equipment required for the automatic fabrication of structural elements in space and for the assembly of such elements into a large, lightweight structure. The program defines a large structural platform to be constructed in orbit using the space shuttle as a launch vehicle and construction base.

Large space structures activity at MSFC

This paper describes a broad based set of activities which have been undertaken at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) developing technologies necessary to emplace and operate large structures in space. Progress has been made in the development of processes and equipment needed for the in space fabrication of structural members in both aluminum and graphite composite materials. Designs for member joining attachments have been completed and the evaluation of procedures for structural assembly have been simulated and evaluated utilizing the MSFC Neutral Buoyancy Facility. A concept of a flight test necessary for flight verification of the technologies for space fabrication, assembly, and operation of large space structure is described. Recently initiated is a project to develop design characteristics of a deployable structure required for the Science and Applications Space Platform (SASP). This is being accomplished through the design, fabrication, analysis, and test of a full scale ground test article which reflects the influence of system requirements of the SASP. Development of designs for erectable/deployable structures which are modular and have various applications to large space structures is in progress.

The applicability of DOE solar cell and array technology to space power

Current trends in terrestrial photovoltaics that might benefit future space power needs are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the Low-Cost Solar Array Project with attention given to the materials task, the silicon sheet task, the production processes and equipment task, and encapsulation. The Photovoltaic Concentrator Technology Development Project is also discussed. It is concluded that terrestrial photovoltaic technology that has either been developed to date or is currently under development will not have any significant effect on the performance or cost of solar cells and panels for space over the near term (1980-1990).

Ultrasonic Transducer Analyzer

Ultrasonic transducer-beam-intensity distributions are determined by analyzing echoes from a spherical ball. Computers control equipment and process data. Important beam characteristics, such as location of best beam focus and beam diameter at focus, can be determined quickly from extensive set of plots generated by apparatus.

Proceedings of the 16th Project Integration Meeting

The principal achievement of the Low Cost Solar Array Project in 1980 was the attainment of $2.80/Wp Technical Readiness, and that processes and equipment now commercially available can make possible a deliverable product in 1982. A prototype array for intermediate load applications was demonstrated using frameless modules. It was proof tested to 40 lb/sq ft loading, and priced at $24/sq m, including array fabrication, module installation, shipping to the site and site installation for quantities of 20 MW.

Space processing of chalcogenide glass

A program was conducted to develop the technique of space processing for chalcogenide glass, and to define the process and equipment necessary. In the course of this program, successful long term levitation of objects in a 1-g environment was achieved. Glass beads 4 mm diameter were containerless melted and fused together.

Specific construction tests

The technical feasibility of the Satellite Power System (SPS) is discussed. The development of feasible operational concepts and conceptualization of specific construction tasks are examined. The logic flow of functional analyses of both the rectenna and the satellite is illustrated. Constraints placed upon the construction processes and equipment by the satellite design are outlined. The construction tasks, when defined and combined into an integrated schedule establish, a time line for construction mass flow demands to be satisfied by the space transportation systems. An example of satellite constructive demands and HLLV delivery capabilities is given.

Safety policy and requirements for payloads using the Space Transportation System (STS)

The Space Transportation Operations (STO) safety policy is to minimize STO involvement in the payload and its GSE (ground support equipment) design process while maintaining the assurance of a safe operation. Requirements for assuring payload mission success are the responsibility of the payload organization and are beyond the scope of this document. The intent is to provide the overall safety policies and requirements while allowing for negotiation between the payload organization and the STO operator in the method of implementation of payload safety. This revision provides for a relaxation in the monitoring requirements for inhibits, allows the payload organization to pursue design options and reflects, additionally, some new requirements. As of the issue date of this NHB, payloads which have completed the formal safety assessment reviews of their preliminary design on the basis of the May 1979 issue will be reassessed for compliance with the above changes.

Space Power Management and Distribution Status and Trends

An overview of space power management and distribution (PMAD) is provided which encompasses historical and current technology trends. The PMAD components discussed include power source control, energy storage control, and load power processing electronic equipment. The status of distribution equipment comprised of rotary joints and power switchgear is evaluated based on power level trends in the public, military, and commercial sectors. Component level technology thrusts, as driven by perceived system level trends, are compared to technology status of piece-parts such as power semiconductors, capacitors, and magnetics to determine critical barriers.

Automated Heat-Flux-Calibration Facility

Computer control speeds operation of equipment and processing of measurements. New heat-flux-calibration facility developed at Lewis Research Center. Used for fast-transient heat-transfer testing, durability testing, and calibration of heat-flux gauges. Calibrations performed at constant or transient heat fluxes ranging from 1 to 6 MW/m2 and at temperatures ranging from 80 K to melting temperatures of most materials. Facility developed because there is need to build and calibrate very-small heat-flux gauges for Space Shuttle main engine (SSME).Includes lamp head attached to side of service module, an argon-gas-recirculation module, reflector, heat exchanger, and high-speed positioning system. This type of automated heat-flux calibration facility installed in industrial plants for onsite calibration of heat-flux gauges measuring fluxes of heat in advanced gas-turbine and rocket engines.
