CERES Single Satellite Footprint, TOA and Surface Fluxes, Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Ed2A-NoSW)

The Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) product contains one hour of instantaneous Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The SSF combines instantaneous CERES data with scene information from a higher-resolution imager such as Visible/Infrared Scanner (VIRS) on TRMM or Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua. Scene identification and cloud properties are defined at the higher imager resolution and these data are averaged over the larger CERES footprint. For each CERES footprint, the SSF contains the number of cloud layers and for each layer the cloud amount, height, temperature, pressure, optical depth, emissivity, ice and liquid water path, and water particle size. The SSF also contains the CERES filtered radiances for the total, shortwave (SW), and window (WN) channels and the unfiltered SW, longwave (LW), and WN radiances. The SW, LW, and WN radiances at spacecraft altitude are converted to Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) fluxes based on the imager defined scene. These TOA fluxes are used to estimate surface fluxes. Only footprints with adequate imager coverage are included on CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1the SSF which is much less than the full set of footprints on the CERES ES-8 product. The following CERES SSF data sets are currently available: CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition1 CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1 CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2A CER_SSF_TRMM-SIM-VIRS_Edition2_VIRSonly CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2A-TransOps CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2B-TransOps CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2B CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition1A CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition1A CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition2A CER_SSF_Terra-FM2-MODIS_Edition2A CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition2B CER_SSF_Terra-FM2-MODIS_Edition2B CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Beta1 CER_SSF_Aqua-FM3-MODIS_Beta2 CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Beta2. Proposed Protocols for Defining Requirements and Sizing of Media-Based Filters for Spacecraft and Planetary Lander Applications

The air quality control equipment aboard future deep space exploration vehicles provide the vital function of maintaining a clean cabin environment for the crew and the hardware. This becomes a serious challenge in pressurized space compartments since no outside air ventilation is possible, and a larger particulate load is imposed on the filtration system due to lack of sedimentation in low gravity, and can experience short duration peak loading of dust from planetary surfaces for Lunar or Mars landers. The filter industry has established methods to properly size filters for a given particulate load, but requirements for the space or planetary application introduce additional consideration. In this work, a methodology for properly evaluating and sizing particulate filters for a Lunar surface pressurized environment will be presented, including estimating the loading and particle size distributions of the loading based on mission requirements. In addition, a scaling analysis from single filter media sheet to full-scale filters for this application, based on recent testing, will also be presented. These results of this study may provide meaningful guidance for properly designing media-based particulate filters for the air revitalization challenges in future deep space exploration missions.

Construction status of the Mu2e crystal calorimeter

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for the charged-lepton flavor violating neutrino-less conversion of a negative muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. The Mu2e detector is composed of a tracker, an electromagnetic calorimeter and an external veto for cosmic rays. The calorimeter plays an important role in providing excellent particle identification capabilities and a fast online trigger filter, while aiding the track reconstruction capabilities. Calorimeter requirements are to provide a large acceptance for 0~10 MeV electrons and reach: i) a time resolution better than 0.5 ns; ii) an energy resolution better than 10%; and iii) a position resolution of 1 cm. The calorimeter consists of two disks, each one made of 674 pure CsI crystals. Each crystal is readout by two large area 2×3 arrays of UV-extended SiPMs of 6×6 mm2 dimensions. A large scale prototype (Module-0) has been tested at an electron beam. We report here the tests done to finalize the calorimeter design, the results obtained with Module-0 and the status of production. At this time, the performance characteristics of 85% of the crystals and all of the SiPMs have been measured. The calorimeter engineering drawings have been completed and the large mechanical components are under fabrication. Analog and digital electronics have been prototyped and tested with irradiation dose. Their serial production is being organized. The calorimeter assembly phase is planned for mid-2020.

(abstract) Cometary Particles as a Tracer of Jupiter's Stratospheric Circulation

The impact of fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter's atmosphere in July 1994 may provide an unprecedented opportunity to study Jupiter's stratospheric circulation. Recent calculations by Z. Sekanina predict that much of the comet material will be deposited in Jupiter's stratosphere. If so, and if the material is deposited in a confined region (10 000 km or less, horizontally) we can expect a situation analogous to an El Chichon or Pinatubo event for the terrestrial stratosphere. Initially the volatile material will be vaporized and will rapidly recondense. The large ice crystals and dust particles will rain out and be lost to the troposphere. The cloud of small particles which remain may have settling times of more than a year. These submicron to micron particles would probably be easily seen in methane filter images in the near-IR, and possibly in the ultraviolet. An observational program to monitor the dispersal of this cloud or clouds would reveal much about the nature of the circulation. Some predictions about the meridional evolution of the clouds can be made already, based on the meridional circulation model of West et al. unless the impact itself significantly disrupts the annual average circulation well after the initial transients die away.

Energetic ion and electron beams at the plasma-sheet boundary in the distant tail

Several energetic particle bursts observed by ISEE 3 in the distant tail are analyzed. The energetic particle data are supplemented by the electron plasma and magnetic field measurements. These bursts are characterized by large velocity-dispersion effects, with energetic electrons observed first, followed by ions with continuously lower velocities. Both ions and electrons stream in the tailward direction. Protons and alpha particles of the same energy per nucleon are observed at the same time. The dispersion effects are observed in reverse order when the spacecraft leaves from the boundary layer into the lobe. No obvious signature indicating the passage of a plasmoid has been observed in the particle or magnetic field data during or immediately following these bursts. It is concluded that these beams at the plasma-sheet boundary originate at a steady source, presumably close to a neutral line, and not at a time varying source. The velocity filter effect in a dawn-dusk electric field arranges particles with progressively lower velocity further inside the wedge-shaped region of reconnected field lines. The plasma electron distribution exhibits a tailward directed heat flux within this layer.
