Lunar polymict breccia 14321 - A compositional study of its principal components

Forty-nine sub-samples of the polymict breccia 14321,184 have been excavated from the rock and analyzed by instrumental activation analysis techniques, specially modified to allow examination of small samples. Two distinct types of microbreccia clasts were analysed. A mare-type basalt of unusual composition is present as several discrete clasts. Mixing models for the clastic components of the breccia illustrate that at least three stages of assembly may be distinguished on compositional grounds. The first was at a site such that KREEP-rich materials dominated the clastic rocks formed, although a variety of lithic fragments were apparently present. The second assembly stage may have been primarily that of comminution and mixing of the more primitive materials, with addition of mare-type basalt clasts. The third stage saw addition of clasts of 14321-type basalt. In the final assembly stage, the light matrix was apparently formed entirely by mutual abrasion of the pre-existing clasts, resulting in little or no change in bulk composition.

Analysis of the measured effects of the principal exhaust effluents from solid rocket motors

The feasibility of conducting environmental chamber tests using a small rocket motor to study the physical processes which occur when the exhaust products from solid motors mix with the ambient atmosphere was investigated. Of particular interest was the interaction between hydrogen chloride, aluminum oxide, and water vapor. Several types of instruments for measuring HCl concentrations were evaluated. Under some conditions it was noted that acid aerosols were formed in the ground cloud. These droplets condensed on Al2O3 nuclei and were associated with the rocket exhaust cooling during the period of plume rise to stabilization. Outdoor firings of the solid rocket motors of a 6.4 percent scaled model of the space shuttle were monitored to study the interaction of the exhaust effluents with vegetation downwind of the test site. Data concerning aluminum oxide particles produced by solid rocket motors were evaluated.

Determination of principal stress in birefringent composites by hole-drilling method

The application of transmission photoelasticity to stress analysis of composite materials is discussed. The method consists in drilling very small holes at points where the state of stress has to be determined. Experiments are described which verify the theoretical predicitons. The limitations of the method are discussed and it is concluded that valuable information concerning the state of stress in a composite model can be obtained through the suggested method.

Investigation of some of the principal geometric effects on planetary polarization

The paper investigates geometric effects which may influence the interpretation of observed polarimetric data of planets used to deduce physical properties of aerosols and their distributions in planetary atmospheres. The effects studied include the observer's distance to the planet, horizontal inhomogeneity of the planetary atmosphere, and deviation from a spherical body. The results will facilitate the present and future analyses of spacecraft data.

A closed-loop principal component analysis of a tetrahedral truss

A tetrahedral truss, representative of a fairly broad class of large space structures, is considered. A method, measuring the dynamical importance of each elastic mode when the structure is under feedback control, is presented. The main conclusion is that the closed-loop importance of each vibration mode depends on the robustness requirements. Also, there appears to be a conflict between precise control of a given node of the structure and stability margin, these two requirements leading to contradictory classifications of the modes by order of importance.
