Pyrolysis Vacuum-Assisted Plasma Ionization Ion Mobility–Mass Spectrometry for Insoluble Polymer Analysis

Wire-based metal additive manufacturing utilizes the ability of additive manufacturing to fabricate complex geometries with high deposition rates (above 7 kg/h), thus finding applications in the fabrication of large-scale components, such as stamping dies. Traditionally, the workhorse materials for stamping dies have been martensitic steels. However, the complex thermal gyrations induced during additive manufacturing can cause the evolution of an inhomogeneous microstructure, which leads to a significant scatter in the mechanical properties, especially the toughness. Therefore, to understand these phenomena, arc-based additive AISI 410 samples were fabricated using robotic gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and were subjected to a detailed characterization campaign. The results show significant scatter in the tensile properties as well as Charpy V-notch impact toughness data, which was then correlated to the microstructural heterogeneity and delta (δ) ferrite formation. Post-processing (austenitizing and tempering) treatments were developed and an ~70% reduction in the scatter of tensile data and a four-times improvement in the toughness were obtained. The changes in mechanical properties were rationalized based on the microstructure evolution during additive manufacturing. Based on these, an outline to tailor the composition of “printable” steels for tooling with isotropic and uniform mechanical properties is presented and discussed.

Optimization of Hydrogen Production from Pyrolysis of Biomass Waste [Poster]

We developed an CFD aided ML-based tool for rapid assessment and optimization of different compositions of biomass in a fluidized bed reactor. First, we use CFD to simulate fluidized bed reactors with known inlet biomass mixtures and obtain corresponding syngas yields. A lumped kinetic mechanisms represents the conversion of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, as well as subsequent cracking of tars into non-condensable gases (H 2 , CO, CO 2 , CH 4 ). We use Bayesian analysis/optimization to obtain the ideal operational and mass flow conditions for hydrogen production.

Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis Oil Stand-Alone and Co-Hydroprocessing Case Studies: Design, Cost, and Sustainability Based on Process Model Predictions

Refined liquid fuels provide conveniences for road, rail, air, and marine transportation due to high energy density, ease of transport and storage, and existing production and distribution infrastructure. Biomass conversion technologies can help diversify and increase the supply of liquid fuels towards a more robust energy future. The backbone of such development must include reliable, high-volume biomass supply chains and efficient utilization of those resources. These activities, if pursued, will lead to rural infrastructure development and new jobs.

Accelerated Aging of Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oils

Carbonyl content is a better metric for tracking aging than viscosity. Existing aging test (24 hours @ 80 °C) is too severe, and correlates to more room temperature aging than would realistically occur. New aging test proposed: 2 hours @ 80 °C correlates to 1-3 months of room temperature storage. Aging is slowed in cold storage, but still occurs.

Initiation and Carbene Induced Radical Chain Reactions in CH 2 F 2 Pyrolysis

High temperature dissociations of organic molecules typically involve a competition between radical and molecular processes. In this work, we use a modeling, experiment, theory (MET) framework to characterize the high temperature thermal dissociation of CH 2 F 2 , a flammable hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) that finds widespread use as a refrigerant. Initiation in CH 2 F 2 proceeds via a molecular elimination channel; CH 2 F 2 →CHF+HF. Here we show that the subsequent self-reactions of the singlet carbene, CHF, are fast multichannel processes and a facile source of radicals that initiate rapid chain propagation reactions. These have a marked influence on the decomposition kinetics of CH 2 F 2 . The inclusion of these reactions brings the simulations into better agreement with the present and literature experiments. Additionally, flame simulations indicate that inclusion of the CHF+CHF multichannel reaction leads to a noticeable enhancement in predictions of laminar flame speeds, a key parameter that is used to determine the flammability of a refrigerant.
