Solar Thermal Energy Planner (STEP 1): A New Decision Support Tool for Solar Industrial Process Heat Applications

Solar thermal technologies are a promising technology to supply low-cost thermal energy to industrial processes, but there are often significant barriers to entry to industrial owners considering these technologies for their energy demands. To overcome this barrier and convey economic value to customers, NREL and Sandia National Laboratories developed Solar Thermal Energy Planner (STEP 1), a new web-based decision support tool for solar industrial process heat systems. At SolarPACES 2024, the STEP 1 tool was still under development; progress, methodologies, and a preliminary case study was presented. With the STEP 1 tool launch in May 2025, in this work, the initial version of the full public tool will be presented with demonstrations of its capabilities using a few case studies. First, the user's process heat needs such as location, process media (e.g., steam, air), process temperature, land availability, electricity and fuel costs, among other parameters. STEP 1 features a mapping interface that allows users to draw land and roof boundaries. The process media and temperature inform technology selection criteria modules that determine the appropriate solar thermal collection technologies, as well as congruent heat transfer media (e.g., hot water, oil, salt). Once the solar thermal technology selected, its nominal thermal production for the given site is characterized using NREL's System Advisor Model (SAM). Then, a modified version of NREL's REopt optimal sizing and dispatch optimization tool determines cost-optimal sizing. Within minutes, the user receives the results of the technoeconomics analysis, including the size and performance of the cost-optimal solar-plus-storage system. The cost of the system is compared to business-as-usual (e.g., an existing, standalone natural gas boiler). Users can download key results to store for sensitivity analyses. Examples of flat plate collector, parabolic trough, and molten salt tower applications with and without PV hybridization for different industrial facility types are presented in this work. The STEP 1 tool aims to reduce barriers to the adoption of solar heating solutions stemming from a lack of familiarity and technical background with solar system design options and costs among industry stakeholders.

High Temperature Optocoupler for 3D High Density Power Modules

The goal of this proposed research is to develop a reliable high-temperature optocouplers, which can operate at 250°C with at least ten-year lifetime, and replace isolation transforms as the galvanic isolation solution for the 3D integration of high density power modules. The electrification of future transportations (i.e., electric vehicles) will continuously drive the demand for high density power modules. Optocouplers (i.e., packaged light emitter and detector) as a promising candidate to replace bulky isolation transformers are highly desirable to facilitate the continuous scale-down of gate driver circuitry that will lead to 3D high density power modules and achieve disruptive performance in terms of thermal management, power density, power efficiency, reliability and operating environments. However, regular semiconductor optoelectronic materials and devices have significant difficulty functioning in the harsh environments designated for high density power module usage (such as operation at high temperatures). Ultimately, it is not the intrinsic properties of power devices that prevent their use at higher temperatures, but rather the low voltage electronics needed to drive them and the packaging that surrounds them. The typical operating temperature for optocouplers is only up to 100°C, due to the limitations of light emitting diode (LED) devices inside and packaging materials. A systematic characterization methodology will be developed to analyze the performance, lifetime and reliability of LED devices and distinguish multiple failure mechanisms at high temperatures. An original methodology of “design for reliability” will be developed to design the optoelectronic devices with high reliability and long lifetime at high temperatures. A new architecture of high temperature high reliable optocouplers will be developed, fabricated and demonstrated with continuous operating at 250°C. The development of efficient, reliable high density 3D power modules is the foundation for energy efficiency and energy reliability. Enabled with advanced 3D integration and packaging technologies, high density power module solutions can achieve much more superior performance over the conventional discrete solutions in terms of efficiency, thermal management and power density. The proposed concept of high temperature optocouplers as the galvanic isolation solution for high density power modules will bring together interdisciplinary research involving the wide bandgap materials, optoelectronics, high reliable device design, electronics packaging and power modules. A streamline of skilled personnel would be trained including graduate and undergraduate students, local engineers and scientists which are in great demand to both academia and optoelectronics industry. The proposed research topics, such as, solid state lighting and high temperature device reliability, are currently of major interest at the Department of Energy, in particular, Sandia National Laboratories. This project can enhance collaborations between the University of Arkansas (UA) and Sandia National Laboratories. The findings of the proposed research are expected to be integrated into high density 3-D power modules at the Engineering Research Center for Power Optimization for Electro-Thermal Systems (POETS).

kynema-sgf [SWR-20-85]

Kynema-SGF (formerly AMR-Wind), wherein SGF stands for structured-grid fluid dynamics, is a massively parallel, block-structured adaptive-mesh, incompressible flow solver. The codebase was initiated in 2019 from incflo. The solver is built on top of the AMReX library. AMReX library provides the mesh data structures, mesh adaptivity, as well as the linear solvers used for solving the governing equations. Kynema-SGF is actively developed and maintained by a dedicated multi-institutional team from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, National Laboratory of the Rockies, and Sandia National Laboratories. The primary applications for Kynema-SGF are: performing large-eddy simulations (LES) of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flows, simulating wind farm turbine-wake interactions using actuator disk or actuator line models for turbines, and as a background solver when coupled with a near-body solver (e.g., Kynema-UGF) with overset methodology to perform blade-resolved simulations of multiple wind turbines within a wind farm. For offshore applications, the ability to model the air-sea interaction effects and its impact on the ABL characteristics is another focus for the code development effort. As with other codes in the Kynema ecosystem, Kynema-SGF shares the following objectives: *an open, well-documented implementation of the state-of-the-art computational models for modeling wind farm flow physics at various fidelities that are backed by a comprehensive verification and validation (V&V) process; *be capable of performing the highest-fidelity simulations of flow fields within wind farms; and *be able to leverage the high-performance leadership class computing facilities available at DOE national laboratories.

SCALE Modeling of the Sodium Cooled Fast-Spectrum Advanced Burner Test Reactor

This report documents the modeling and simulation of a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) as part of a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission–sponsored project to assess the modeling and simulation capabilities for accident progression, source term, and consequence analysis for advanced reactor technologies with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory code SCALE and the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) code MELCOR. Based on publicly available benchmark specifications, a fully heterogeneous 3D SCALE model of the 250 MWth Advanced Burner Test Reactor (ABTR) was developed to demonstrate SCALE’s capabilities for full-core reactivity analysis, fuel inventory prediction, and decay heat analysis of an SFR. The benchmark specifications contain modeling details for the ABTR core at the beginning of equilibrium cycle (BOEC) at operating conditions; they were derived from a 2006 preconceptual design report produced by Argonne National Laboratory. The ABTR was designed to demonstrate reactor-based transmutation of transuranics, that is, to “burn” transuranics recovered from light-water reactor (LWR) spent fuel. The ABTR’s fuel is designed to operate in 4 month cycles using uranium/transuranic (U/TRU) metallic fuel, with a TRU content of approximately 20%, at a conversion ratio of approximately 0.6. Various reactivity calculations were performed with SCALE for the ABTR and, where possible, compared with results available in the open literature. Additionally, SCALE was used to perform a full-core depletion calculation over the 4 month cycle to obtain the nuclide inventory at the end of equilibrium cycle (EOEC). These nuclide inventories, decay heat, power profiles, and reactivity feedback coefficients at EOEC represent the initial conditions for analyzing severe accident scenarios with MELCOR.
