Mitigating Iodine Diffusion by a MoO 3 –Organic Composite Hole Transport Layer for Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) exhibit commercialization potential, but long-term stability still must be addressed. Among various products of perovskite decomposition, iodine species are of considerable concern due to their high vapor pressure and corrosive nature. To address this, a small-molecule hole transport layer (HTL), 4,4',4"-tris[(3-methylphenyl)phenylamino]triphenylamine (m-MTDATA), is used; mixing it with molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) p-dopes the layer and slows iodine permeation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that m-MTDATA:MoO3 HTLs employed in PSCs improve stability under both thermal and voltage bias stress compared to devices with a conventional doped 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) HTL.

Metal Oxide-Induced Instability and Its Mitigation in Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as a promising photovoltaic technology for sustainable energy solutions due to their impressive power conversion efficiency and a path to be manufactured by low-cost, high-throughput methods. To reach PSCs’ full potential for practical implementation, it is crucial to solving the issues related to its long-term operational stability. Furthermore, given that PSCs consist of many layers of dissimilar materials which form multiple internal interfaces, it is prudent to examine whether there exist interfacial interactions, most importantly between transport layers and perovskite absorbers, that can trigger device performance and instability. In this perspective, we bring to the attention of the PSC research community the lesser-known interfacial degradation of halide perovskites promoted by contact with metal oxide transport layers and highlight the deleterious effects on the PSCs’ performance and stability. We also discuss various mitigation strategies that have shown promises to achieve high-performing and stable PSCs.

Evaluation of PbTe and SnTe as Ohmic Contact Layers in CdTe Solar Cell Devices

For solar cells based on CdTe, the choice of a suitable back contact material is limited by CdTe's deep work function. Here, we explored p-type PbTe and SnTe as ohmic contacts to CdTe. These contact layers were grown on single crystal CdTe substrates by molecular beam epitaxy, and the valence band offset between film and substrate was measured using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Polycrystalline device structures were also grown by sublimation to assess performance improvements. Doping was achieved in PbTe by thallium incorporation. Only the highest Tl doped PbTe resulted in a desirable band alignment with the CdTe, forming an electron reflector and no hole barrier. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements also revealed significant photocarrier lifetime improvements for only the highest doped PbTe. Consequentially, devices incorporating the highest doped PbTe layers showed increased power conversion efficiency, primarily from increased fill factor. Doping of the PbTe was measured via Hall effect with variable magnetic field, which was required due to the formation of an n-type parasitic interface layer. To properly interpret the variable field Hall measurements, we derived an expression for the magnetic field-dependent conductivity tensor of an L-valley semiconductor.

Solid Solvation Assisted Electrical Doping Conserves High‐Performance in 500 nm Active Layer Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Organic solar cells (OSCs) process fascinating solution‐printing capability to achieve low‐cost and large‐scale manufacture. However, the rapid power conversion efficiency (PCE) decay with active layer thickness enlargement inhibits the implement of OSCs’ potential advantages. To overcome the bottlenecks of PCE decay in thick active layer OSCs, the electrical doping with componential selectivity in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) film is achieved by introducing a solid solvation additive. Benefiting from the higher exciton splitting efficiency together with the longer drift (L dr ) and diffusion (L diff ) lengths, an OSC with 100 nm BHJ film demonstrates a PCE increment from 16.44% to 18.24% with prolonged dark and illuminated storage stabilities. Applying the solid solvation assisted (SSA) doping method in the OSCs with 500 nm active layer, the PCE significantly increases by 31.9%, from the original value of 11.79% to 15.55%. It further improves to 15.84% in a ternary blend thick‐film device, which is the record value to the best of our knowledge. Besides, the SSA doping narrows the PCE gap between the 0.04 and 1 cm 2 devices. All improvements demonstrate the great potential of SSA doping for OSC commercial manufacture, since it optimizes the photovoltaic performance under all practical conditions of long‐term, thick‐film, and large‐area.

Dimer Acceptor Adopting a Flexible Linker for Efficient and Durable Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Organic solar cells (OSCs) have advanced rapidly due to the development of new photovoltaic materials. However, the long‐term stability of OSCs still poses a severe challenge for their commercial deployment. To address this issue, a dimer acceptor ( d T9TBO) with flexible linker is developed for incorporation into small‐molecule acceptors to form molecular alloy with enhanced intermolecular packing and suppressed molecular diffusion to stabilize active layer morphology. Consequently, the PM6 : Y6 : d T9TBO‐based device displays an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.41 % with excellent thermal stability and negligible decay after being aged at 65 °C for 1800 h. Moreover, the PM6 : Y6 : d T9TBO‐based flexible OSC also exhibits excellent mechanical durability, maintaining 95 % of its initial PCE after being bended repetitively for 1500 cycles. This work provides a simple and effective way to fine‐tune the molecular packing with stabilized morphology to overcome the trade‐off between OSC efficiency and stability.

Origins of hydrogen that passivates bulk defects in silicon heterojunction solar cells

Silicon heterojunction solar cell fabrication incorporates a significant amount of hydrogen into the silicon wafer bulk, and the amount of injected hydrogen is comparable to that introduced by silicon nitride films during a high-temperature firing step. In this work, the origins of the hydrogen injected during heterojunction cell processing have been identified. We demonstrate that the hydrogen plasma treatment that is routinely included to improve surface passivation considerably increases the hydrogen concentration in the wafers. We also show that the hydrogenated amorphous silicon i/p+ stack is more effective than the i/n+ stack for bulk hydrogen incorporation, and both are more effective than intrinsic films alone.

Status of wraparound contact solar cells and arrays

Solar cells with wraparound contacts provide the following advantages in array assembly: (1) eliminate the need for discretely formed, damage susceptible series tabs; (2) eliminate the n gap problem by allowing the use of uniform covers over the entire cell surface; (3) allow a higher packing factor by reducing the additional series spacing formly required for forming, and routing the series tab; and (4) allow the cell bonding to the interconnect system to be a single-side function wherein series contacts can be made at the same time parallel contracts are made.
