Cyclic Oxidation of Single-Crystal NiAl-X Alloys

Several single-crystal NiAl-X alloys (X = Hf, Ti, Cr, Ga) were cyclically oxidized at 1000 C for up to 1000 1-hr cycles. The alloys all showed protective, adherent alpha-Al2O3 scale formation with positive weight change behavior throughout the test. There was no clear correlation between the composition of the various alloys and the specific weight gain although the ranking by weight change was relatively consistent for two duplicate series of samples. The presence of Hf (0.5 - 0.8 at.%) resulted in the internal formation of Al2O3/HfO2 "stringers." Diffusion of Hf to the growing oxide stringers resulted in the development of a near-surface layer depleted of these precipitates.

Compositional Effects on Nickel-Base Superalloy Single Crystal Microstructures

Fourteen nickel-base superalloy single crystals containing 0 to 5 wt% chromium (Cr), 0 to 11 wt% cobalt (Co), 6 to 12 wt% molybdenum (Mo), 0 to 4 wt% rhenium (Re), and fixed amounts of aluminum (Al) and tantalum (Ta) were examined to determine the effect of bulk composition on basic microstructural parameters, including gamma' solvus, gamma' volume fraction, volume fraction of topologically close-packed (TCP) phases, phase chemistries, and gamma - gamma'. lattice mismatch. Regression models were developed to describe the influence of bulk alloy composition on the microstructural parameters and were compared to predictions by a commercially available software tool that used computational thermodynamics. Co produced the largest change in gamma' solvus over the wide compositional range used in this study, and Mo produced the largest effect on the gamma lattice parameter and the gamma - gamma' lattice mismatch over its compositional range, although Re had a very potent influence on all microstructural parameters investigated. Changing the Cr, Co, Mo, and Re contents in the bulk alloy had a significant impact on their concentrations in the gamma matrix and, to a smaller extent, in the gamma' phase. The gamma phase chemistries exhibited strong temperature dependencies that were influenced by the gamma and gamma' volume fractions. A computational thermodynamic modeling tool significantly underpredicted gamma' solvus temperatures and grossly overpredicted the amount of TCP phase at 982 C. Furthermore, the predictions by the software tool for the gamma - gamma' lattice mismatch were typically of the wrong sign and magnitude, but predictions could be improved if TCP formation was suspended within the software program. However, the statistical regression models provided excellent estimations of the microstructural parameters based on bulk alloy composition, thereby demonstrating their usefulness.

Growth of single crystals of organic salts with large second-order optical nonlinearities by solution processes for devices

Data obtained from the electric field induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) and Kurtz Powder Methods will be provided to MSFC for further refinement of their method. A theoretical model for predicting the second-order nonlinearities of organic salts is being worked on. Another task is the synthesis of a number of salts with various counterions. Several salts with promising SHG activities and new salts will be tested for the presence of two crystalline forms. The materials will be recrystallized from dry and wet solvents and compared for SHG efficiency. Salts that have a high SHG efficiency and no tendency to form hydrates will be documented. The synthesis of these materials are included in this report. A third task involves method to aid in the growth of large, high quality single crystals by solution processes. These crystals will be characterized for their applicability in the fabrication of devices that will be incorporated into optical computers in future programs. Single crystals of optimum quality may be obtained by crystal growth in low-gravity. The final task is the design of a temperature lowering single crystal growth apparatus for ground based work. At least one prototype will be built.

Ultra-stable and poison tolerant oxygen evolution activity enabled by surface In 2 O 3- x (OH) y of Co 3 In 2 S 2 large single crystals

Water is an earth-abundant source for clean hydrogen production via electrochemical water electrolysis (WE). However, the surface poisoning that occurs in aqueous electrolytes drastically deactivates the electrocatalytic performance of electrodes. Here, in this study, we report electrochemically formed In 2 O 3-x (OH) y on the surface of a large (1–1.5 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide and 0.3–0.5 mm thick) single crystal of Weyl semimetal Co 3 In 2 S 2 (Co 3 In 2 S 2 /In 2 O 3-x (OH) y ) as an ultra-stable and poison tolerant electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH, addressing a bottleneck in WE. The OER activity of the powder form of Co 3 In 2 S 2 is limited by its aerophilic nature. Remarkably, the single-crystal electrodes maintained their high activity for a continuous operational period of 5 h in 1 M KOH electrolyte with/without 10 mM strong surface-poisoning ligands i.e., potassium cyanide, bipyridine, and ethylenediaminetetraacetate disodium salt. The electrodes exhibited stable OER activity for 1000 h at 100 mA cm -2 (1.73 V vs. RHE). The temperature-dependent OER polarization curves (10–70 °C) unambiguously revealed surface poisoning through the suppression of precatalytic Co-redox peaks on the bipyridine poisoned electrode, which led to the stabilization of surface Co-sites. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of pristine, poisoned and post-electrocatalytic single-crystal Co 3 In 2 S 2 electrodes revealed the existence of an In 2 O 3-x (OH) y surface phase, which could be the potential heterostructure for the origin of ultra-stable and poison tolerant OER activity.

Single-Crystal Diffuse Neutron Scattering Study of the Dipole-Octupole Quantum Spin-Ice Candidate Ce 2⁢ Zr 2 ⁢O 7 : No Apparent Octupolar Correlations Above 𝑇 = 0.05 K

The insulating magnetic pyrochlore Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2 ⁢O 7 has gained attention as a quantum spin-ice candidate with dipole-octupole character that arises from the crystal-electric-field ground-state doublet for the Ce 3+ Kramers ion. This dipole-octupole character permits both spin-ice phases based on magnetic dipoles and those based on more-exotic octupoles. This work reports low-temperature neutron diffraction measurements on single-crystal Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2⁢ O 7 with 𝑄 coverage both at low 𝑄, where the magnetic form factor for dipoles is near maximal, and at high 𝑄, covering the region where the magnetic form factor for Ce 3+ octupoles is near maximal. This study was motivated by recent powder neutron diffraction studies of other Ce-based dipole-octupole pyrochlores, Ce 2 ⁢Sn 2 ⁢O 7 and Ce 2 ⁢Hf 2 ⁢O 7 , which each showed temperature-dependent diffuse diffraction at high 𝑄, interpreted as arising from octupolar correlations. Our measurements use an optimized single-crystal diffuse scattering instrument that allows us to screen against strong Bragg scattering from Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2 ⁢O 7 . The temperature-difference neutron diffraction reveals a low-𝑄 peak consistent with dipolar spin-ice correlations reported in previous work, and an alternation between positive and negative net intensity at higher 𝑄. These features are consistent with our numerical-linked-cluster calculations using pseudospin interaction parameters previously reported for Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2⁢ O 7 , Ce 2 ⁢Sn 2 ⁢O 7 , and Ce 2 ⁢Hf 2 ⁢O 7 . Importantly, neither the measured data nor any of the NLC calculations show evidence for increased scattering at high 𝑄 resulting from octupolar correlations. We conclude that at the lowest attainable temperature for our measurements (𝑇 = 0.05 K), scattering from octupolar correlations in Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2 ⁢O 7 is not present in the neutron diffraction signal on the level of our observation threshold of around 0.1% of the low-𝑄 dipole scattering. We compare these results to those obtained earlier on powder Ce 2 ⁢Sn 2 ⁢O 7 and Ce 2⁢ Hf 2⁢ O 7 , and to low-energy inelastic neutron scattering from single-crystal Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2 ⁢O 7 .

Mechanical Characterization of Stacked Single-Crystal of Polyethylene and Monolayer MoSe 2

Polymer single crystal (SC) is a key building block of semicrystalline polymers. However, direct experimental measurement of freestanding mono-lamella polymer SC has not been demonstrated. This is, in large part, due to the difficulties associated with manipulating freestanding individual mono-lamella SC because of its extremely low rigidity and low robustness. Here, we demonstrate a new strategy to successfully suspend and test a polymer SC by using a 2D material as backing. In particular, mono-lamella polyethylene (PE) SC is stacked on monolayer MoSe 2 , and the hybrid stacks can be suspended over microholes. Nanoindentation is used to probe the suspended PE-SC/MoSe2 stacks and MoSe 2 monolayers. The results suggest the first experimentally-measured in-plane moduli of PE-SC and 2D MoSe 2 as 32 ± 3 and 237 ± 15 GPa, respectively. Such a stacked unit represents an ultrathin structure of polymer-ceramic laminate and the idea can be applied to other laminated composite systems. Therefore, this research will pave the way to accurately measure the mechanical properties of polymer SCs and their composites, as well as provide a key insight on designing composite structures.

Coexistence of commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic ground states in Co 𝑥 ⁢NbSe 2 single crystal

In Co 𝑥 ⁢NbSe 2 , crystal symmetry and cobalt site occupation drive the formation of two distinct magnetic phases. At 𝑥=1/4, the centrosymmetric structure (𝑃⁢6 3 /𝑚⁢𝑚⁢𝑐) promotes Co-Co interactions leading to the formation of an 𝐴-type antiferromagnetic structure phase with a transition temperature of 𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$=169K. At 𝑥=1/3, the noncentrosymmetric structure (𝑃⁢6 3 ⁢22) induces a lower-temperature magnetic phase with 𝑇$^S_𝑁$=28K. We report the coexistence of both substructures within a superlattice, with a nuclear propagation vector of (1/3, 1/3, 0) relative to the host lattice. Single crystals of Co 0.28 ⁢NbSe 2 exhibit both magnetic transitions, with 𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$ corresponding to the 𝑥∼1/4 phase and 𝑇$^S_𝑁$ corresponding to the 𝑥∼1/3 phase. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements confirm these transitions, although only the high-temperature 𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$ phase significantly affects resistivity. We successfully isolate each phase in powder samples, while single crystals with an intercalation ratio of 𝑥=0.28 display the coexistence of both phases in a single sample. Using single-crystal neutron diffraction, we solved the magnetic structure of the high-temperature centrosymmetric phase (𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$), and neutron powder diffraction revealed the double-𝑞 magnetic structure of the low-temperature noncentrosymmetric phase (𝑇$^S_𝑁$).

Single crystal synthesis and magnetic properties of a Shastry-Sutherland lattice compound BaNd 2 ZnS 5

In this study, single crystals of a Shastry-Sutherland magnetic semiconductor, BaNd 2 ZnS 5 , were synthesized through a high-temperature solution growth technique. Physical properties were characterized by powder and single crystal x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, and temperature-dependent specific heat measurements. BaNd 2 ZnS 5 orders antiferromagnetically at 2.9 K, with magnetic moments primarily aligned within the $ab$ -plane. Magnetic isothermal measurements show metamagnetic transitions at ~ 15 kOe for the [110] direction and ~ 21 kOe for the [100] direction. Estimated magnetic entropy suggests a double ground state for each neodymium ion.

Plastic Deformation of Aluminum Single Crystals at Elevated Temperatures

This report describes the results of a comprehensive study of plastic deformation of aluminum single crystals over a wide range of temperatures. The results of constant-stress creep tests have been reported for the temperature range from 400 degrees to 900 degrees F. For these tests, a new capacitance-type extensometer was designed. This unit has a range of 0.30 inch over which the sensitivity is very nearly linear and can be varied from as low a sensitivity as is desired to a maximum of 20 microinches per millivolt with good stability. Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of small amounts of prestraining, by two different methods, on the creep and tensile properties of these aluminum single crystals. From observations it has been concluded that plastic deformation takes place predominantly by slip which is accompanied by the mechanisms of kinking and polygonization.

Strong pinning and slow flux creep relaxation in Co-doped CaFe 2 As 2 single crystals

In this paper we report on measurements of critical current densities J c and flux creep rates S of freestanding Ca(Fe 1–x Co x ) 2 As 2 (x ≈ 0.033) single crystals with T c ≈ 15.7 K by performing magnetization measurements. The magnetic field dependences of J c at low temperature display features related to strong pinning. In addition, we find that the system displays small flux creep rates. The characteristic glassy exponent, μ, and the pinning energy, U 0 , display exceptional high values for pristine crystals. We find that for magnetic fields between 0.3 T and 1 T, μ decreases from ≈ 2.8 to ≈ 2 and U 0 remains ≈ 300 K. Analysis of the pinning force indicates that the mechanism is similar to the observed in polycrystalline systems in which grain boundaries and random disorder produce the vortex pinning. Considering the large U 0 observed in the single crystal, we attempt to improve the pinning by adding random point disorder by 3 MeV proton irradiation with a fluence of 2 × 10 16 proton/cm 2 . The results show that, unlike other iron-based superconductors, the superconducting fraction is sharply reduced by irradiation. This fact indicates that the superconductivity in the system is extremely fragile to an increment in the disorder. The superconducting volume fraction in the irradiated crystal systematically recovers after removal disorder by thermal annealing, which evidences as to the observation of critical state in curves of magnetization versus magnetic field. No features related to a reentrant antiferromagnetic transition are observed for the irradiated sample.

Significant improvement of conversion efficiency by passivation of low-angle grain boundaries in flexible low-cost single-crystal-like GaAs thin-film solar cells directly deposited on metal tape

We develop an easily implementable yet effective process to achieve high power conversion efficiency in newly-developed flexible single-crystal-like GaAs thin-film photovoltaic solar cells on cheap metal tape. We study various techniques on the fabricated devices to passivate the defect states associated with dangling bonds at low-angle grain boundaries (LA-GBs) existing in the single-crystal-like GaAs material. We report that sulfur by trioctylphosphine sulfide (TOP:S) solution treatment can partially but effectively passivate the defect states at the LA-GBs to increase all the solar cell performance parameters of open-circuit voltage VOC (33.2%), short-circuit current JSC (19.5%), and fill factor FF (25.8%), resulting in the improvement of the power conversion efficiency more than double. The material and device characterizations and numerical modeling are performed to propose a mechanism, also suggesting that the power conversion efficiency higher than 20%, which is an important target milestone in emerging solar cell technologies, can be achieved. This work presents the first effective passivation of the bulk defects in GaAs at the device level and can also offer a solution for other photonic and electronic devices using non-single-crystalline GaAs films for flexible electronics.
