J-Adaptive estimation with estimated noise statistics

The J-Adaptive estimator described by Jazwinski and Hipkins (1972) is extended to include the simultaneous estimation of the statistics of the unmodeled system accelerations. With the aid of simulations it is demonstrated that the J-Adaptive estimator with estimated noise statistics can automatically estimate satellite orbits to an accuracy comparable with the data noise levels, when excellent, continuous tracking coverage is available. Such tracking coverage will be available from satellite-to-satellite tracking.

Thermodynamics and statistical mechanics

The basic thermodynamic properties of gases are reviewed and the relations between them are derived from the first and second laws. The elements of statistical mechanics are then formulated and the partition function is derived. The classical form of the partition function is used to obtain the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of kinetic energies in the gas phase and the equipartition of energy theorem is given in its most general form. The thermodynamic properties are all derived as functions of the partition function. Quantum statistics are reviewed briefly and the differences between the Boltzmann distribution function for classical particles and the Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions for quantum particles are discussed.

Measurements of wave height statistics and radar, cross-section in a wind wave tank

There is currently wide interest among oceanographers and meteorologists in remote sensing of ocean surface characteristics. A wind wave tank developed at Langley Research Center is used to evaluate various remote sensing techniques based on electromagnetic scattering phenomena, and in the development and evaluation of theoretical scattering models. The wave tank is described, the statistics of the rough water surface are documented, and microwave radar cross-section measurement results are presented. The water surface statistics are similar in key respects to the open ocean, and the microwave scattering measurements show, qualitatively, theoretically predicted large and small scale scattering effects.

Statistical support for the ATL program

Statistical experimental designs are presented for various numbers of organisms and agar solutions pertinent to the experiment, ""colony growth in zero gravity''. Missions lasting 7 and 30 days are considered. For the designs listed, the statistical analysis of the observations obtained on the space shuttle are outlined.

Rain cell statistics experiment

Communication links suffer from interference caused by precipitation along the transmission path. Terminals established to take advantage of space diversity must be spaced in a manner dependent on rain intensities, rain cell sizes, and spacings. A NASA sponsored radar experiment was conducted at Wallops Island, Va. in 1972 and 1973 to provide statistical data on rain shower intensities and their geometrical properties. The objectives of the experiment were to determine the statistics of the field of rain cells in terms of cell size, intensity, spacing, number density, and altitude dependence, and to find the detailed structure of individual cells leading to a model of an individual cell. The experimental system is described, emphasizing the frequency diversity aspects, the computer control of the antenna, and the digital and analog video recording.

Inadequacy of the statistical many-body model for molecular infrared absorption in the far wings

It is known that the infrared absorption coefficient of CO2 in the far wings is far less than what is derived from the assumption of a Lorentzian absorption profile. Sorgen and Ben-Aryeh (1972) tried to show that by incorporating the statistical many-body model into impact theory, the discrepancy between the Lorentzian absorption profile and the experimental infrared absorption coefficient can be removed. This paper attempts to show that the high frequency or short-time property of the dipole-dipole interaction cannot be adequately explained by the many-body model; in other words, the statistical model as conventionally understood is not applicable to infrared spectral lines in the far wings.

Path attenuation statistics influenced by orientation of rain cells

The influence of path azimuth on fade and space diversity statistics associated with propagation along earth-satellite paths at a frequency of 18 GHz is examined. A radar rain reflectivity data base obtained during the summer of 1973 is injected into a modeling program and the attenuation along parallel earth-satellite paths are obtained for a conglomeration of azimuths. Statistics are separated into two groupings: one pertaining to earth-satellite paths oriented in the northwest-southeast and the other in the northeast-southwest quadrants using a fixed elevation angle of 45 deg. The latter case shows fading to be greater with a degraded space diversity suggesting rain cells to be elongated along this direction. Cell dimensions are analyzed for both sets of quadrants and are found to have average values larger by 2 km in the northeast-southwest quadrants; a result consistent with the fade and space diversity results. Examination of the wind direction for the 14 rain days of data analyzed shows good correlation of the average or median wind directions with the directions of maximum fading and degraded space diversity.

A statistical study of Pc 3 magnetic pulsations at synchronous orbit, ATS 6

Results are reported for a study designed to determine statistically the nature and variation of the polarization parameters of Pc3 magnetic pulsations at synchronous orbit. Data obtained with a triaxial flux gate magnetometer on the geosynchronous satellite ATS 6 are subjected to routine power spectral and polarization analyses, and the events examined are identified as peaks in the spectra. Coherence analysis of spectral matrices for these events indicates that Pc3 are very common at synchronous orbit and are primarily a local morning phenomenon with an occurrence peak around 1000 LT; that the pulsations occur at all frequencies in the Pc3 band, with the most common frequency at about 0.35 Hz; that the Pc3 at synchronous orbit are most often linear and generally transverse, but some have significant compressional components; and that based on azimuth angle, there are two distinct classes of Pc3 (azimuthal and radial) with different characteristics. These statistical results are compared with model predictions and ground-based observations.

The morphological and statistical properties of solar X-ray events with long decay times

Photographic data from the S-054 X-ray telescope on Skylab has been used to study the morphological and statistical properties of a class of X-ray events with long decay times. The events were selected for analysis based on their Solrad 1-8 A flux signatures. These events are associated statistically with long-lived active regions, white-light coronal transients, and H alpha prominence activations. These X-ray events usually consist of an arcade of loops with a bright linear structure running along the arcade. The heights of the loops, their expansion velocities, their lifetimes, and morphological appearances all suggest that at least some of these events are the X-ray analog of the loop prominence systems observed in H alpha by Bruzek.

Scintillation statistics caused by atmospheric turbulence and speckle in satellite laser ranging

We study the statistics of scintillation at the ground-based receiver for the earth-space-earth retroreflector configuration of satellite laser ranging. These statistics are governed by the joint effects of atmospheric turbulence and speckle produced by the retroreflector array. An expression for the probability density function of scintillation is obtained and evaluated numerically. Comparison of the normalized variance of scintillation calculated by using this function shows good agreement with results obtained by other methods.

Vector statistics of LANDSAT imagery

A digitized multispectral image, such as LANDSAT data, is composed of numerous four dimensional vectors, which quantitatively describe the ground scene from which the data are acquired. The statistics of unique vectors that occur in LANDSAT imagery are studied to determine if that information can provide some guidance on reducing image processing costs. A second purpose of this report is to investigate how the vector statistics are changed by various types of image processing techniques and determine if that information can be useful in choosing one processing approach over another.

Earth-satellite path attenuation statistics influenced by orientation of rain cells

It is examined whether there may be preferred azimuths for earth-satellite paths along which fading and space diversity statistics are influenced differently than along other azimuths. Such preferred directions may exist if individual rain cells are statistically elongated along them for the given climatological region. The analysis is performed using the rain reflectivity data base obtained at Wallops Island during June, July and August 1973 using a high resolution radar. It is found that in the vicinity of Wallops Island increased attenuation and poorer diversity gains exist along paths whose azimuths and base lines lie in the NE-SW quadrants as compared to the NW-SE sectors. This result suggests the dominance of the major axis of rain cells in these quadrants.

'Chain pooling' model selection as developed for the statistical analysis of a rotor burst protection experiment

A statistical decision procedure called chain pooling had been developed for model selection in fitting the results of a two-level fixed-effects full or fractional factorial experiment not having replication. The basic strategy included the use of one nominal level of significance for a preliminary test and a second nominal level of significance for the final test. The subject has been reexamined from the point of view of using as many as three successive statistical model deletion procedures in fitting the results of a single experiment. The investigation consisted of random number studies intended to simulate the results of a proposed aircraft turbine-engine rotor-burst-protection experiment. As a conservative approach, population model coefficients were chosen to represent a saturated 2 to the 4th power experiment with a distribution of parameter values unfavorable to the decision procedures. Three model selection strategies were developed.

Interpreting statistics of small lunar craters

Some of the wide variations in the crater-size distributions in lunar photography and in the resulting statistics were interpreted as different degradation rates on different surfaces, different scaling laws in different targets, and a possible population of endogenic craters. These possibilities are reexamined for statistics of 26 different regions. In contrast to most other studies, crater diameters as small as 5 m were measured from enlarged Lunar Orbiter framelets. According to the results of the reported analysis, the different crater distribution types appear to be most consistent with the hypotheses of differential degradation and a superposed crater population. Differential degradation can account for the low level of equilibrium in incompetent materials such as ejecta deposits, mantle deposits, and deep regoliths where scaling law changes and catastrophic processes introduce contradictions with other observations.

The role of drop velocity in statistical spray description

The justification for describing a spray by treating drop velocity as a random variable on an equal statistical basis with drop size was studied experimentally. A double-exposure technique using fluorescent drop photography was used to make size and velocity measurements at selected locations in a steady ethanol spray formed by a swirl atomizer. The size-velocity data were categorized to construct bivariate spray density functions to describe the spray immediately after formation and during downstream propagation. It was found that a statistical treatment of drop velocity was supported by the data. Spray density function shapes and modal characteristics depended strongly on position and the amount of droplet-gas interaction that had occurred. Bimodal density functions were formed by environmental interaction during downstream propagation. Large differences were also found between spatial mass density and mass flux size distributions at the same location.

Statistical characterization of the fatigue behavior of composite lamina

A theoretical model was developed to predict statistically the effects of constant and variable amplitude fatigue loadings on the residual strength and fatigue life of composite lamina. The parameters in the model were established from the results of a series of static tensile tests and a fatigue scan and a number of verification tests were performed. Abstracts for two other papers on the effect of load sequence on the statistical fatigue of composites are also presented.

A summary of Nimbus-6 temperature retrieval accuracy statistics for DST-5 and DST-6

Statistics compiled from Nimbus-6 temperature retrievals processed during the 18 August-4 September 1975 DST-5, and the 1 February-4 March 1976 DST-6 are addressed. All statistics were compiled from samples of colocated satellite sounding and radiosonde measurements. The colocation window is 222 km in space and 6 hours in time.

Statistical studies of animal response data from USF toxicity screening test method

Statistical examination of animal response data obtained using Procedure B of the USF toxicity screening test method indicates that the data deviate only slightly from a normal or Gaussian distribution. This slight departure from normality is not expected to invalidate conclusions based on theoretical statistics. Comparison of times to staggering, convulsions, collapse, and death as endpoints shows that time to death appears to be the most reliable endpoint because it offers the lowest probability of missed observations and premature judgements.
